Tech’s Will Jackson on bowl practice

Greetings-

Sorry for the delay. I have been down for the count with some sort of bug. Just a few notes from an interview with guard Will Jackson.

1. After a week break, Jackson was eager to get back to practice, to start preparing for Utah and ending Tech’s six-game bowl losing streak.

“It’s kind of a known fact that Georgia Tech’s lost ‘X’ number of bowl games in a row,” he said. “The Orange Bowl my first year and last year losing to Air Force, both of those were pretty embarrassing. You work three weeks, put a lot of time and effort into it and you go down and get beat, it’s not a lot of fun.”

2. Jackson said that run and pass blocking technique got a little sloppy towards the end of the season, which is why the line is trying to polish it up early on in bowl practice.

3. Jackson gave a nod to a few younger linemen, specifically Shaq Mason, Trey Braun and Errin Joe. Of Mason, he said that “I think he’s going to be a phenomenal player.”

Jackson also mentioned a member of the scout-team defense that I imagine many of you have never heard of – Xavier Lewis. Lewis transferred from Savannah State and I believe has two years of eligibility remaining. He’s a walk-on.
“He plays hard,” Jackson said of Lewis. “That’s the big thing. Sometimes those guys on the scout team, they get a little discouraged, they’ll go half-speed, not really care, but he’s going full-go every time. Whether it’s trying to give us a look or to prove himself, he definitely makes an impression.”

4. Jackson has a great aunt who lives in El Paso, who he said has lived there her whole life. She married his grandfather’s brother.

“So, kind of a weird connection,” he said. “Still family nonetheless.”

Thanks for reading.

they had their own people in the replay booth with the replay officia and did not show the replay official the replay of a clear fumble at the end of the game that the tv was showing..it was clearly a fumble as the MWC people confirmed the next day, by not giving the replay official the right angle, byu went on to win the game and gave them a 6th win which put them in a bowl game..the MWC people slapped their hands, NCAA did nothing…FYI BYU is no longer in the MWC so they do not have too follow the new MWC rule of not having their own people in the replay booth.

Buzzy, if we get all of those, I’d say the class will mirror the 2007 recruiting class. The difference though is that we have the pieces in play to win 8-10 games per year right now. Those kids could push us over the top.

It seems like we’ve finally built depth on the Flats. If we were to get most of those kids, along with the ones we’ve got, we’d have experience and talented youth. That would be a very winning combination. Add to that the fact that nearly every player on our roster is a redshirt and you get something very special. Talent plus fifth-year seniors was something that got JoePa and Bobby Bowden championships (not to mention a staple of Beamer Ball). It’s a tried and true model. Hopefully we can replicate that model.

Browsing the Big Ten blogs, I found this. During the down time in this part of the season, Michigan coach Brady Hoke has been dropping in on his players’ classes.

“The class was a Department of Afroamerican and African Studies course, and the lecture centered on the impact of British marching music in the Caribbean.”

During the year that I was an anthropology major, the courses were considerably more difficult. Analyzing the significance and effects in minutiae of the cowrie shell trade among otherwise hostile Melanesian island cultural groups, for example. What is the effort required in courses these days? Maybe I should go back to school and get a few more degrees. I could replace some of my paint by number masterpieces that I did as a kid that are hanging in the garage.

Great new about Vad Lee……he is in a superb position to become a solid 4 year starter; I would have been shocked if he actually decided to transfer. I attended GT from 1985-1990, so I know how difficult the first year is at GT (as a student)……..each year gets better and better at GT!!

I think GT will have a solid recruiting class this season. Maybe we can land 3-5 studs late in the process and end up with a stellar class; only time will tell. I just wish the AJC would provide better coverage of the happenings with regard to recruiting efforts. I will clarify with this statement: I would rather have no GT recruiting coverage than the negative coverage designed to hurt/hinder the GT recruiting efforts (as we had for 2-3 years in a row recently!).

1 4 GT, I agree with your point about the Sunday print edition, at least as I remember it. It also seemed that there were more human interest stories or game within the game stories. I know it is different now, in those days there was much more game reporting, primarily because a lot of people got the sense of the game from the written articles. Today, with 500 channels where virtually every game televised there is much less demand for that type article. It is too bad, because I thought that was some of the great sportswriting by Fisher and Outlar. In essence, setting the scene and telling the story. That is why I sometimes like reading NYT articles on the Ivy League games, they are the few that still have to tell the game story.

In many ways this blog fills in the void left by the newspaper.

Amen! Time to get over a disappointing showing against the pups and to end the bowl winning drought. The bowl game SHOULD be a positive first step to next season. And while I am proud of Tevin Washington improving his overall performance this year (vs. last year) like a lot of Tech fans I am really looking forward to seeing what Vad Lee can do for us and to a real competition for the starting QB role. PJohnson is discovering that in a conference they learn how to stop a run offense. Second, there is no QB that can get crushed on every play and still be an accurate passer. PJohnson needs to move again where is option is unknown and he can have a couple of good years.

Navigator

December 8th, 2011
3:47 pm

Remember also that PJohnson’s best two years here was with top level recruits signed by Gailey. It’s becoming obvious that he can’t sign blue chippers to play in the option.

Navigator, the option worked pretty good this past season (2nd in rushing in the country). And TW really didn’t take that much abuse on the field—-not nearly as much as Nesbitt did. His passing was generally inaccurate or poorly timed. If he improves, or if Vad takes over and passes as good as advertised, there will be more of a balance in the offensive play, and we will still pile on the yards. What we HAVE to have is a good defense, and with all the redshirts and committed or still interested recruits, that may be improving FINALLY too.

IL Jacket

Supersize, couldn’t agree more-and the good news is that no one can say it is the scheme that holds anyone who wants to go to NFL from achieving their goal. In the recent years, our defensive players have done really well in making the transition to the NFL. I do worry about two things on defensive recruitment. I like Al Groh, lot of experience, but he does not appear to be a long term DC and recruits may have some issues there. Secondly, I wonder if CPJ personally spends enough time recruiting the defensive side of the ball.

Supersize that order, mutt

December 8th, 2011
4:29 pm

IL Jacket, based on commitments already made and interest still indicated by others, I would say that recruiting for the defense is improving. We just have to sign those who have committed or expressed interest. And there ARE apparently some redshirts who will be able to contribute quite a bit next year, to go along with the experience gained by those already playing and not graduating. That’s the HOPE at any rate.

I get tired of the posters that advertise themselves as GT fans and/or alumni who do little else but post negative comments. Last year was clearly a down year and a big let down from what seemed to be an upswing in GT fortunes. Based on last year’s performance, the so called experts (talking heads) said GT would have a really good year if they managed to be bowl eligible and truthfully many didn’t think they would be that good. These geniuses also knew what GT’s schedule would be. And they still didn’t think GT would be very good, What do we as fans and the team members have to be proud of? Well, they were 6-0 at one point. They lost 2 games to mediocre teams that many thought, me included, they could have won, but for whatever reason they lost, They dropped from #12, many, me too, thought they were over ranked, but they rose up and beat the # 5 team, Clemson, 31-17 which easily could have been 52-10 if a few missed plays had been made. They went into the end of the season with the chance of finishing 10-2. Unfortunately, they will finish with only 9 wins if they win the Sun Bowl. What does the GT football team have to proud of? I’d say plenty, whether they finish 9-4 or 8-5. What do you have to be so negative about?

I like Paul Johnson. I think that he has the toughness and integrity that GT needs. I thought that the team did very well. Look at the numbers, they had victories over NC, NCSTand Clemson. Those were good victories with bowl teams. Tech played VT close and played Georgia well. The only game that they were totally out of was Miami.
I do wish that Johnson would tweak the option and I think that he will if Vad is a great passer. The defense needs a few more players and I think they will come as success breeds success.

Techies, if somebody commits to Georgia Tech is immediately reported in the AJC recruiting blog. If nothing is being reported in the AJC recruiting blog it probably means that your big mouthed coach isn’t getting any commitments. Why don’t you take all your crying and moaning to him? Why are you always blaming someone else for all of your problems Techies? UGA is hosting several big name recruits this weekend. The new trend at Tech is to beat UGA once a decade and to win a bowl game once a decade.

This is a bowl topic

December 10th, 2011
10:46 am

GT’s MAJOR bowl history since the mid 1950s:
1955 Sugar Bowl, a win
1967 Orange Bowl, a loss
2009 Orange Bowl, a loss

Yes, tons and tons of insignificant mid to low level Bluebonnet, Emerald City bowls but ONLY THESE THREE MAJOR BOWLS in what? 56 years?

UGA has been in this same 56 year era to 1 Orange Bowl about 7 Sugar Bowl games, and about 5 or 6 Cotton Bowl games and yes, tons of insignificant mid level bowls like the old Peach or the Chic Fil A or the Liberty or the Independence but these, unlike for GT are not our usual bowl venue. I can prove it:

Look at the current bowl offerings for GT and UGA. GT got the shaft having to go to El Paso and dodge drug dealer’s gun fire. DUCK ! You had better wear KEVLAR !!

The Capitol One and the Outback have become, much like the Fiesta Bowl has become, upper end NY Day type of bowls and UGA has been to these two around 5 or 6 more times in this 56 year era.

See? GT is small ball.

A pervasive developmental disorder, Asperger syndrome is distinguished by a pattern of symptoms rather than a single symptom. It is characterized by qualitative impairment in social interaction, by stereotyped and restricted patterns of behavior, activities and interests, and by no clinically significant delay in cognitive development or general delay in language. Intense preoccupation with a narrow subject, one-sided verbosity, restricted prosody, and physical clumsiness are typical of the condition, but are not required for diagnosis.

Preoccupation with a narrow subject? The good news Really? is that there are medications and treatments available to you. I really hope a cure or preventative can be found for this condition.

Thanks Supersize. Yeah High Tech. I saw that. Looks like a good place that probably has a good local trade. I believe I saw where it opened in 1998. That,s pretty long lived in the food & beverage business, so they must be doing something right. My ex-wife and I went out quite a bit, no kids, back in the 70’s & early 80’s, and it was true then too. The prettier the food looked on the plate, the more it cost. Our favorite restaurant was the “ABBEY” in downtown Atlanta, an old church converted to a restaurant. The staff dressed as monks and nuns. We always had 5 wait staff. But it was delicious.

But boy, I LOVED Aunt Fannie’s Cabin; that was some awesome eating. I never heard of Ray’s but there is a Ray’s Coastal Cafe in Augusta that serves Caribbean food; it’s pretty good. And I do enjoy me some good Cracker Barrel eating. I just wish they had real fried chicken, like Po Folk’s used to have. Everything else there is good though. When I was in school, there were a couple of all-you-can-eat catfish places, and a bunch of us Tech students would go there and PIG OUT!!!! That’s probably why they all closed. LOL

Trying as you can to make it sound bad that we beat you 31-17 by several touchdowns, while you make ready to lose your 7th bowl game in a row and then recruit your usual # 51 recruiting ranking for Paul Johnson as well, when he cannot even figure out who your Quarterback is in game 12 vs your only Rival, us. By the way, the answer to that is Jaybo Shaw, who transferred from Paul Johnson to be playing in the game Saturday on TV to see if they can go to the National Championship Game again, throwing 7 of 8 passes and 1 TD pass along with his 2 TD runs.

Hey…chill. we gotta post over here; that is the ONLY thing keeping the rivalry alive! (The game certainly is not!) Our blog sites (visited often by the Tekkies quite often, by the way) are full of victory cries, and Tech fans who hate UGA no matter what! Therefore, we intend to make it the rivalry it once was again! Here is how:
1. Make sure Reggie Ball’s kinfolks are by-passed on Scholarship Day!
2. Find a nose tackle who is bigger than your kicker.
3. Although ya’lls offense does not call for it too much, find a QB who actually CAN chunk the rock!
4. Remember to honor your opponents: don’t forget the hitchin’ posts for the mules the Florida State folks ride in.
5. Sell out a home game or two and fill up that 27-person stadium; it makes you look like you care!
6. Remember, don’t make too much fun of the perceived intellectual slothfulness at UGA; we still have manged to have a nice stadium that is full and to bring in a heap more $ to the program than ya’ll…..can’t be all that dumb! This is about football…..don’t try to interject anything else in to cover for the butt-whippin’s 9 outta the last 10 years!
7. Never, I mean NEVER talk about how Wal-mart and Micky D’s jobs are bad! Since all the T.V.s, etc. come from China, Japan, and South Korea the brilliant engineers at Tech musta “fumbled the ball”! Seen a heap of engineering apps comin’ in over the fax lately……
