Georgia Tech begins bowl practice

Greetings-

Some notes, including coach Paul Johnson’s response to rumors/speculation about freshman quarterback Vad Lee transferring after Monday’s practice. Some other stuff first.

1. The team began a full week of practices on Monday. There will be three practices next week, two the week after that and then players will be released Dec. 20 and go to El Paso for the Sun Bowl Dec. 26. There will be 15 practices total.

2. The first stretch of bowl practices is mostly about working on fundamentals. Out of about 20 periods in Monday’s practice, only about six involved scout teams. That means that for most of the practice, all of the players, including the redshirt freshmen, were getting repetitions in Tech’s offense and defense.

3. Johnson said he doesn’t have any plans to make any changes on the staff. That would mean a second offseason in a row without any turnover. Defensive coordinator Al Groh said “for sure” he intends to be back for the 2012 season.

4. Johnson doesn’t expect any players to miss the bowl game because of grades, “but you never know,” he said. “That won’t be for a couple weeks.”

5. Johnson said he’d heard “a lot of really good things” about the Sun Bowl and is looking forward to it. Johnson went to El Paso when he was an assistant coach at Hawaii as Hawaii and UTEP were in the same conference.

“It’ll be a good game against a real good opponent,” he said. “Utah’s real good. Especially defensively, they’ve been good for awhile.”

6. Finally, Lee. At the risk of giving this more attention than I sense is worthy, I’ll provide the Q&A from the post-practice scrum with Johnson and let you draw your own conclusions.

Q: How was Vad Lee at practice today?
A: He’s fine. No problem. He worked hard. I coached the quarterbacks today. Coach (Brian) Bohannon wasn’t there today. He worked hard. All of them did.

(Bohannon was out recruiting, which is pretty typical for early bowl practices. Several questions later, the topic returned to Lee.)

Q: Is there any reason to think that he wouldn’t return?

A: Oh, I don’t know. I didn’t see anything today that made me think he was leaving. But guys could leave tomorrow. I don’t know. It happens all the time.

Q: Has he talked to you about it?

A: I talk with Vad every day.

Q: But has he talked with you about transferring?

A: I’m not going to get into what I talk with the players about. You’d be surprised sometimes. I talk to them about a lot of things.

Q: Homesickness seems to come up with players, particularly those from out of state. Do you have a particular way you address it with players?

A: It’s part of growing up. Everybody gets homesick. It’s part of it. You know what 18- and 19-year-olds are like. It’s something different every day. It is what it is. Just move on.

A couple points of note. I’m guessing it might read that Johnson was being defensive or curt, but he was at ease. I’d say he was trying to downplay the matter but obviously he didn’t say nothing is happening, perhaps to some degree because it’s not for him to say.

That said, if something were really moving forward with a possible transfer, I think Johnson would have answered questions differently. The fact that he’s practicing isn’t a guarantee of anything, but it would indicate that he’s not exactly packing up his boxes.

I’ll say this: Players considering transferring because they’re homesick is not uncommon. You may remember I wrote that David Sims went through the same thing as a redshirt freshman quarterback. I dug back into my notes and found a quote from Bohannon in August regarding the matter.

“I’m sure that goes through a lot of their minds,” he said. “When you deal with these young men who are the life of their town and their school and all of the sudden, they come to college and all of the sudden, they’re just another guy in the mix, it’s a tough adjustment.”

All this to say – I’d take all this with a grain of salt.

Thanks for reading. I’ll have something up Wednesday morning. (I’m off this week, technically.)

Ken you do a great job. I saw Vad in the Summer Scrimmage and I thought he was the most talented. I hope he doesn’t leave. One thing that could also make a freshman want to leave is the amount of schoolwork required. It is not easy and it takes an adjustment. I think Grades scare more off from Tech than homesickness. Anyway, I hope he stays as he is going to be very good at QB.

Ken, I think I speak for many when I say “THANK YOU” for your coverage of the Jackets this year. It has been a fun & interesting season. This team has played hard and if they win their 9th game @ Sun Bowl they have alot to be proud of in 2011. The future for Tech and the ACC is looking brighter with alot of young talent, particularly at Clemson & GT which has become a great rivalry game. Local bowl game would’ve been nice for fans, but sure a trip is more interesting and fun for the team. Again, thank you for your excellent work….perfect mix of information, candor, insight, & humor.

“Did you sense any urgency with CPJ…”

Well, let’s see:

* Johnson said the UGA game is no longer important because tech plays for championships. He’s 1-3 against UGA so I guess that’s true.

* Paul Johnson says SEC’s superiority all about perceptions. Hmm, my perception says the SEC has 2 teams playing in the BCS Championship game, that the SEC has 3 of the top 6 teams, 4 of the top 9 teams, 5 of the top 16 teams, and 6 of the top 25 teams. The A She She has two top 25 teams…..#11 Va Tech and #15 Clemson. Impressive.

* “Personally, I think the conference thing is way overblown.” Said Johnson.

* Johnson pontificates further: “There’s four SEC-ACC games Saturday. Let’s see what happens. Who’s favored in the Clemson-South Carolina game? Who’s favored in the Florida-Florida State game? Wake-Vandy? I don’t know. But you see what I mean?”. Yes, I see what you mean, UGA thumped tech, SCeast beat Clemson and Vandy pasted Wake. However, mighty FSU did defeat the worst Florida team in a generation.

* Tech is 0-3 in bowl games under Johnson.

* A spectacular season, that included the hilarious “Washtington for Heisman” nonsense from some of the mentally deranged earned you a spot in the illustrious Sun Bowl.

* The NCAA nailed the tech football program.

Nah, I don’t see any reason for there to be a sense of urgency from Johnson.

wow. thanks, everyone. that really makes my day. it makes me job a lot more enjoyable knowing the work is received well.
to answer the question about if we asked if lee would play, the answer is no. i can see where him playing (and playing well, specifically), but a) it would burn his redshirt and b) send a message that he’s a player worth placating, which i’m not sure is a good message or precedent. i’m not even sure lee would go for it, given that he’d himself be losing a year of eligibility.

Can’t put the fate of the team in one freshman guys. Look at UGA, they have had a top 10 RB every year for the past 10 years, yet they now complain about not having any depth. Some players work out, some players fail out, and some just flop. GT needs a top notch QB or 2 every year in recruiting, then they need to wait a year or two and compete for the starter spot. If they fear competition, then they will not make it at a major program.

Hope S Days gets to play early, T Washington is pretty good but just to inconsistant.

LSU showed against UGA you can play a brand of ball where you only throw 13 passes and dominate in Football, Denver is Showing same thing in NFL. Glad to see coaching staff stay, GT is young team this year and will be asesome the next couple of years. Would like to see Groh uses J Thomas, L Young, Noble, Sweeting in more press coverage next year and attack the QB with Attaochu, Watts, Menocal, Cummings, Dieke, Marcordes, Hunt-Days.

Next years Projected Line Up
BB – Perkins Sims
AB1 – O Smith Zenon
AB2 – BJ Bostic Peeples Snoddy
QB – V Lee S Days split time early for starting job
OT – Catlin Alford 6-3 300
OG – Shaw Mason 6-1 300

DE Cummings
LB Attaochu

Dennis Andrews is enrolling in Jan. which tells me he wants to play and appears to have the skills to compete for the starting role and GT is still in position to get Devin Fuller and I believe Bohannon was visiting Bilal Marshall after he opened his recruitment back up. It’s a wait and see like every year.
I will say GT and CPJ need this bowl win and I hope the players and staff are taking Utah seriously.
Grinch, what would you have had CPJ say about the SEC before the games were even played? As far as all the those teams being ranked only Bama, LSU, Ark., USC, and UGA deserve to be in the top 25, which is still plenty to prove the SEC is still tops in CFB, but Auburn in no way deserves to be in the top 25 and would not be there if not for preseason ranking.

If Miles Jones spent the weekend at Tech, as reported, and since he said he would commit right then, if offered a scholarship, and since I haven’t seen any indication of a commitment, I assume he was not offered. Carvell has written about 50 pieces on whether or not Keith Marshall would sign with UGA, but it’s like listening to crickets when we’re waiting to hear how Tech is doing with recruiting. There is a reason that UGA thinks it rules the state – it’s because UGA does rule the AJC.

Vad has spent all fall practicing with the 1st and 2nd teams, giving him a jump start on competing next spring. Unless grades are an issue, I can’t see why he’d jump ship.

Looks like the team gets an immediate chance to prove how good/bad 2012 will be with a competitive BYU (9-3) team coming to Atlanta on Sep 1. Would be nice to get the bowl losing streak over with to set the right tone for 2012.

My biggest concern for next year is D-line. We need some freshmen D-line recruits (or perhaps a JC transfer) who can start from day one. Not many out there good enough to do so…

What would be wrong with extending an offer to the big white kid (triple option QB) out of Fla that is supposedly committed to Ga? Richt and his bunch are never embarrassed to offer a kid whether he’s previously committed or not.

Birmingham Jacket, Do you really think CPJ does not want to sign 5 star guys? GT rarely gets these top recruits and he is fighting two battles. One is the media and other coaches when it comes to his system and the other is kids actually wanting to come to GT with the degrees that are offered. The defense is lacking when it comes to the d-line but otherwise I think Groh has done pretty good with only one recruiting class so far as he was late to the show in 09. I have a friend whose son is currently being recruited as a o-lineman. He has heard from Dabo and Spurrier that he cannot make it past college if he chose to play for GT. This is untrue as we all know, but if you are 17-18 and you and your parents are relying on these men to be up front and trustworthy then it’s going to influence you.

@Ramblin Man

I think CPJ probably comes off to a lot of recruits as “I’m gonna’ win with or without you kid”.

I say this bc of his policy of pulling the offer if recruits visit other schools— a policy which he has humbly but wisely abondoned.

I can certainly never see him going the extra mile to stroke a kid’s ego like Mark Richt calling a kid on his birthday. Maybe that’s beneath guys like you and him. But this is a new generation of athlete, and you’ve got to kiss up to them.

Or you can sign classes of players whose only offers are Furman, Duke, etc…. and get used to more Saturday’s like Nov 26.

As for your tolerance of Al Groh…. That makes me wonder if you’ve even watched a Tech game the past 2 years.

For the Lee kid, he has a terrific opportunity at Tech. He now knows the system as well as the school as well as his teammates. Atlanta, too, is not so shabby a place to be in school either. If he transfers, it will take him longer to get his bearings at a new school. There are very few Cam Newtons, and really, Newton stepped into a very good situation with a ton of good players – it wasn’t all Cam.

So, Vad, life is about making choices. Be smart. Whatever you decide, do your best to back up those choices. Tech would love to keep you. But in the end, we are all replaceable. Make your mark as best you can.

I in no way think a grown man that runs a D-1 program should be kissing a kids arse. I know these coaches rely on these kids for thier bread and butter, but treating them this way is what got prgrams like Ohio, Miami, and even UGA into the trouble they have now. Do you think that maybe just maybe had Richt treated these KIDS like they needed to earn soemthing instead of like royalty he would have the RB problems UGA has now. Is toloerating Groh giving him a chance to get the right players in place? I am frustrated over the bad line play, but I can’t fault Groh for one player having an illness and another breaking his leg that were recruited specifically for this line. Now I will say I am not a fan of the light coverage he implements sometimes, but I am willing to give him another year to show improvement. Once upon a time coaches were given 5 years to build a program now it seems it’s immediate or gone.

I’m really disheartened by the lack of support for Tevin amongst Jacket fans. Even in victory, there has been little support for him. Sure he could throw the ball better at times, but there are also times when he is brilliant. If you all think GT football woes end with Tevin you are sadly mistaken. I could run down a laundry list of things that could be done better at VARIOUS positions all the way up to head coach. There is certainly room for improvement all around, but I dont think that this season was anything to hang our heads about.

IF Vad is as good as you all hope he will be next year, even he will have good days and bad ones. What then?? Will you make him the scapegoat for all shortcomings. I personally think that Tevin would be the best choice for next year. He’s a hard worker, a great runner, he’s a custom mad triple option QB, he knows the GT offense and his passing game will only improve. However, if nothing else changes (i.e better defensive line, more consistency from receivers, better play calling by CPJ etc.) then expect more of the same – regardless of QB.

Tech needs to be able to rotate 6 or 7 D linemen during a game and 4-6 LBs. Our secondary didn’t look as good the last few games but those kids have talent. A pass rush would help. D should be much better next year.

Vad Lee knows he has the job going into next year. He knows he will most likely not only start but be THE STARTER for the next 4 years, his dues are paid. He will start spring as the projected starter by most. He did NEED to have a red shirt year, running the option well takes time and doing it at a college level is not as easy as many would image. Nesbitt got much much better between year one and year 2. The biggest thing Lee will bring is a solid passer for the passing game and a QB that is hard to rattle. No offense to Tevin, but that will make a world of difference. He will also be a leader for the team. No way is he throwing this away to go somewhere else.

I dont know how many plays were actually designed as keepers. Perhaps there were some missed reads but he seemed to connect with Hill on long passes pretty well on average. He’s proven that he can pass – even under pressure. There were bad passes and reads, but also quite a number of catchable balls dropped. I’ll admit that there are problems with consistency. But this was only his first full season. Those are issues of a young QB. It will be no different for Vad. Days has already demonstrated that. We will not improve if we’re always looking to throw the baby out with the bathwater! They’re young!! This half hearted support from our core fan base certaily doesn’t help to build confidence or stability.

I think the whole team was in a funk for MIA and VA. What did you make of the Clemson win? I also thought he played well, not outstanding, against VT (until the Attachou penalty changed the momentum) – which proves that he does show up in big games. But the recurring theme in every loss has been lack of cohesiveness. No one unit is going to win or lose the game for them. We simply dont have those kind of superstars. But what we have is a group of players capable of great wins when they allllllllllllllllll play smart together for 4 qtrs.

I’m not ready to give up on Tevin. I think we have an easier road to correct his minor issues than to basically start completely over with a new QB. Vad may offer some improvements. But my money says he will not have a good enough understanding of the TO to work the miracles everyone seems to expect him to.

… if CPJ is as smart as I hope he is – he will find a way to use both players – perhaps in the game at the same time! Now that would shake some teams up!

Tevin has proven speed, understands the offense and another year of eligibility. A smart man would find a way to maximize on all the talent he has.

I have been following Tech football for 40 years and one thing that I have learned is that those in command are not committed to winning. They kept a so-so basketball coach an additional year just because they didn’t want to pay him off. They hired a coach with a high school offense because he was cheap and no one with commitment would want the job because they know the school is not committed.

Let[s face it Jacket fans, what we have now is the best we can be. Until the establishment makes up their mind that they want to win we can’t win.

We can’t beat Georgia because they are committed and they have a better program, better facilities, and an enduring alumni. We alums at Tech have been waiting for years and have finally realized that some things will never change. We have used the crutch of “academics” for far too long. I am proud that I went to school at Tech but I am embarrassed by the football program.

Did you go to SEC U? Is that a school? I’m sure you did not, and probably did not go to UGA either. But seriously, how does UGA stack up in those stats you spouted off? Don’t worry, I will tell you.

UGA is not playing in the BCS National Championship.

UGA did not win the SEC Championship.

UGA played three ranked teams and beat one. P.S., you lost to Boise State who I believe was going to be shown true football by UGA. Good job on that one.

UGA lost to USC, who should have played LSU in Atlanta. Damn record.

UGA won the East because it is AWWWWWWFUL, except for USC. Wait, damn, ya’ll lost that one.

UGA got MAULED by LSU.

Your top recruit is a pansy on Spice.

Blah, Blah, Blah. Nothing stated here is speculation, but fact.

Savor the flavor my friend while the East sux. Mediocrity is coming. Oh, and Paul Johnson is a great coach and will continue to be. I would love to see a smart man like yourself talk football with him.

Last fact. Your life must suck, because you spend an inordinate amount of time on Tech blogs. If you are such an SEC man, why are you not talking about the UGA 2012 National Title on the other side?

You’re dismissed.

This bowl game is a direction changer, period. This shows that this young team will show up and demand to be a top 25 team. I like Big Time JF line up. Wow, if our O-line can get to 300lbs in our offense…wow, look out. I have hopes for Vad and Synjin. These are warrior QB’s who can punish. Tevin is a manager QB who will absolutely kill an equal or lesser team, but get smashed against a physical defense. But, who knows…its a long offseason and he’s a hard worker. Tradition is .......

December 6th, 2011
10:59 pm

Tech has a bowl tradition but not a major bowl tradition. Here is why:
1955 GT in the Sugar Bowl and I think they beat Rice.
NEXT MAJOR BOWL was in
1967 Orange Bowl loss to Florida and their next major bowl was the
Orange BOwl in 2009 and another loss to Iowa.

Tons and tons of Bluebonnet Bowl trips or Gator Bowl ( I recall Joe PA Whuppin Dodd in 65 or 66) and tons of Boise Bowl games or Emerld City, etc. BUT ONLY THREE MAJORS in 56 years. Look it up.

NOW UGA, as only one example, has been to 3 Sugar Bowls in the last 11 bowl seasons and about three Capitol One bowl games and two Outback Bowl games. These last two are considered NY’s day type of major bowl games, unlike the Sun, played at 4 AM on 12/20th or whatever.

Tradition is defined many ways ………….. and GT does have a bowl tradition, just NOT a major bowl tradition with ONLY three majors in 56 years. In those same exact 56 years, UGA has been two about four or five Cotton Bowl games, about 6 or 7 Sugar Bowl games, one Orange Bowl and Capitol One three times and the Outback twice or three times, counting 2012. See?

Two teams, two bowl traditions and two very different histories over the same era.

Merciless

Tradition is…., that is about the most ignorant post I have ever read here. Although Tech does not have a very good bowl history since the mid 60s, Tech was the first team to win all four major bowls (Rose, Cotton, Sugar, and Orange) as well as the second oldest bowl (Sun Bowl). Tech was the first team to win 7 bowl games in 7 years (Georgia still hasn’t accomplished that feat). Until the beginning of this bowl drought, Tech had the highest winning percentage in bowl games of all colleges in the country. THAT, my friend (and I use that term lightly) is tradition. Couple that with 16 conference championships and four national championships, and you have yet another example of what tradition is. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, along with whatever else you’ve been smoking.

Lee wants t win which tech can’t do, he wants to get antional exposure, which tech can’t provide and he wants to be taken seriously which is impossible for anything or anyone associated with the north avenue trade school. The best techies can hope for is that lee doesn’t go to an acc school where he will carve the bug defense apart every year bu then again who doesn’t do that to tech?

You want to know what a lack pf class is? It was when Vince Dooley said, “HELL NO,” when asked if UGA should honor Al Ciraldo after he died. I never saw anything that UOAD said about Munson. Maybe he said something bad; maybe he didn’t. But the Tech athletic administration chose to honor Munson in a pre-game tribute. Why was not the same thing done in Athens after Ciraldo died? And you refer to somebody laughing about a coed being raped in Athens? What about all the crap that is posted in here everyday of the week by some of your classless UGA trolls about all the crimes that happen on and around the Tech campus? And that would include the garbage that was posted about the rape of a Tech coed behind a fraternity house several weeks ago. There are a few UGA fans who post intelligent, insightful, even complimentary remarks on the Tech blogs, and they are always welcome on here. If Vad leaves, you can start the PJ watch. The program is not making major strides forward in a down conference. I have been a fan of PJ since his days at GA Southern, but this is not GA Southern. The players at this level have to be bigger, stronger and faster. After the loss to LSU in the bowl game, PJ admitted this in his post game comments.

This situation is starting to look a lot like that in the basketball program with Paul Hewitt.

Come on tech fans let’s wake up and comprehend what we have seen.
1) washington can throw the ball but so what.no matter how good a QB can throw
if we don’t have a passing game too not many passes will be completed.
don’t get me wrong, l love the triple option but it can be over used.
2) in the georgia game the bulldogs came out all pumped up with sprit, sorry but our guys didn’t.
it was way to easy to see that georgia wanted that game alot more than we did.

our A game is good and that is what we beat clemsen with and we came so close to beating va tech. if our guys played their A game every week we would be undefeated. don’t tell me how many games ga won cause l couldn’t care less, our A game could have beaten them.

our coaches know how to teach the guys but they suck at motivating them and keeping them sprited enough to stay with it and win the tough ones.
we need to start holding coaches acountable, from the head coach on down.
coaches get paid alot of money so high expectations and demands are well justified

TW Fan

My take on TW is he’s a good QB, a little above average. But I really feel Tech will need a special QB to take it to the next level.

TW is QB that can just run the offense as designed. If play is there he makes it
What Tech needs is just that, but to add that little extra instinct that when a play is not there he will make a few extra plays a game. Think D Robertson at Mich, sometimes plays break down and he will turn it into something big at lest once a game

TW passing, For a Div 1 QB i would say he’s below average, sometimes showed nice soft deep ball, sometime nice touch, then other times he was way off.

Don’t know if Vad or Days is that special QB but:

Days, you can see more energy in his runs, From what I’ve seen there is no dought if he had the game time TW has had he would make a few extra plays, but I can’t tell if he would make the standard plays/reads TW makes

V Lee, Only seen HS film, pre-season scrimmages. From film there is no question he can pass the ball, scrimmages he looked real good running. Coaches talk how he willed team to undefeated season, even in preseason coach Jonson talked about how he was exceptional for Freshmen with only 3 week into system

Only issue is playing time and I think Days should have go a lot more this year.
If Vad wins job we may see Days move to safety or RB, with TW and D Smith and the Frosh this as backups.

Once again I come here to see if there is anything new on GT athletics and what do I see but more of the same old garbage spreading butt sniffing mutt trolls. I would like to call them far worse, but decorum prevents me from doing so because it would dishonor the woman who taught me right from wrong. I really do understand and appreciate the need/desire for well earned time off. But, someone needs to stop these trolls posting such garbage as you from “the schirmster” @ 10:52 AM on Dec 7, 2011. Come on AJC! Can’t you do better than this. Don’t you want better than this representing your publication. This entity is losing respect because of the garbage you seemingly ignore and continue to allow people to denigrate the memory of MEN like Ralph McGill, Jesse Outlar, Furman Bisher, Harry Mehre & Jim Minter. HOW LONG?

1 4 GT, for the most part I totally agree with you, but remember it was Ralph McGill who was most instrumental in not counting the Tech wins in ‘43 and ‘44. He was just another dawg homer. Even Mehre, who was a former dawg coach, was more objective than that. Regarding these blogs though, if it were not for the fact that this is about the only place you can come and get factual info about Tech athletics and meet (sometimes in person) some really cool and faithful Tech fans, I would quit visiting this site at all.

I like that break down Big Time.

Although I am partial to TW, ultimately want to see the team improve and enjoy the next level of success. I do think that with limited prospects (recruits) we benefit from utilizing all the talent we have. It would be a loss not to capitalize on TW’s knowledge of the offense in some way. We’ve invested the time into bringin him up offensively… it would be ludacris not to reap anything more from it. If not at QB maybe hit some weights and he’d be a good BBack.

Idk, but we gotta shake some things up if we want different results.

… I dont share your view on Days. He shows heart and some promise but doesn’t understand the TO well enough to trump TW yet.

And furthermore, I am old enough to remember when the AJC was two different newspapers–1 in AM & 1 in PM. and I bought both each day and subscribed on a monthly basis to both. I traveled the SE on work then and bought both papers each day from Charleston to Vicksburg and Miami to Chattanooga. Under the header of “The Atlanta Constitution”, the AM paper, was their slogan, “Covers Dixie Like the Dew”. I still bought the AJC when I was where I could find one. The advent of the internet has put a huge hurt on newspapers nationwide with the instant availability of current news. All of this just to say, I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER AJC as long as they choose to allow the garbage to continue flowing on the sports blogs for GT & UGA, from what I read as the trolls reason for infiltrating this blog. 1 4 GT – I believe “the schirmster” @ 10:52 AM on Dec 7, 2011 is exposing one of two trolls who frequently raid this blog.

The one he is referring to has a deep hatred of Paul Johnson, GT’s uniforms, and GT fans in general (refers to us as GT’s fanbase). He posts under multiple names, runs a firepauljohnson website, and poses as a Tech alumnus or a Tech fan while spewing his hatred for other fans. He also likes to stalk football recruits.

The other troll is a UGA grad. He apparently becomes enraged when there is any mention of GT academics. He takes every opportunity to denigrate GT academics, a subject he knows nothing about. He tries to make jokes about inappropriate subjects, such as people being assaulted. If you read his posts, he does not seem to have any respect for himself or anyone else.

Both trolls are your prototypical geeks, but they call the people on this blog nerds. Both seem seriously deranged and have too much time on their hands.

We need a coaching staff capable of PLAYER DEVELOPMENT – on boths sides of the ball! Thats where it starts. We get decent talent (not 4 star) and if we can further develop those we have, then we are moving in the right direction. It creates an obligatory relationship between players and coaches, players and fans and creates positive buzz amongst recruits.

UnbiasedOpinion

December 7th, 2011
1:18 pm

The real problem that I see in Tech’s current scheme is the effect it has on recruiting. I will agree that the triple option allows teams to make the best use of less than excellent talent, and that it leads to some pretty improbable upsets. It has been shown to give some really solid defenses fits.

However, the biggest problem with the scheme is that it is degenerative in recruiting. It is very hard to convince the best RBs, WRs, and QBs to come play for Tech because their offense, by its very nature, keeps the majority of the players out of the NFL spotlight. And, as we all know, this is the top priority for the tier 1 recruits in the country. What 5 star QB would ever want to come to Tech, knowing full well that he’d be throwing away his NFL potential? What 4 star RB wants to go to a school where everyone on the field is a feature back and no one stands out?

I feel like the proof is in the pudding; the last big-time recruits Tech got were all under the old, pro-style offense.

Tech’s 2012 class is currently ranked 52 in the country with only 1 4 star recruit an no 5 stars. In 2011, they were 42. In 2010, 41. In 2009, 31. And in 2008, Tech was ranked 34.

Granted Tech has never been a recruiting powerhouse, but they consistently ranked in the top 30 in years past. The new offense does two things: allows weaker players to win more games, but attracts weaker rather than talented players. The danger is the national prestige of a program that USED to compete with the best slipping to a tier 3, or worse, school. This offense is great at a program like Navy, but in the state of Georgia, at a program with 4 national titles, Tech fans should demand more. The state of Georgia is ranked 3 in the country for recruiting, and yet Tech regularly loses to Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, South Carolina and others in its home state.

Unbiased, appreciate your thoughtful comments. I have a couple of points to add. First, we have continued to exceed my expectations in the quality of wide receivers that we attract given how little we throw the ball. I am no expert, but Stephen Hill looks like he will play on Sundays. I know Thomas was recruited under a different regime, but we do have some excellent recent history-Johnson, Thomas and now Hill.

With respect to running backs, I don’t think we are really missing out on anyone we need. There are always more talented backs than there are positions available in Div. 1. Additionally, look at the history of the most highly recruited, highly ranked backs over the past several years. UGA has probably done as good a job as anyone in landing these recruits and what do they have to show foe it-King, Ealey and now Crowell. We are holding our own in that area.

The one area in which I am most concerned is with respect to OLine. I think this position is where our scheme may put us at the most disadvantage. Not enough emphasis on pass blocking for recruits who want a pro career, since today’s NFL is virtually an every down passing league, e.g. Green Bay.

Not from an athlete perspective, but from an experiential perspective, I also wonder about our pass defense. When you run so much, I fear during the week our defense does not get challenged by our scout team to grow and gain confidence to perform well against good passing teams.

If do right, no can defense

December 7th, 2011
2:39 pm

1. CPJ record against VT, Miami, uga – 1-3. So my little dawg fans, your reign over us is nothing exclusive/exceptional. Beamerball and talent overload have nearly always beat us (exception is Clemson).

2. Our special teams (esp. our kicking/punting unit) will be much better next year. Remember, even Scott Blair was inconsistent back in 2008/early 2009. Kickoff/punting coverage will be just as bad, though.

3. We will beat Utah and our bowl-losing will have come a complete circle. (Our bowl-losing streak started in ‘05 against Utah). And if uga loses to Sparty, we’ll both have the same final record, just like last season.

If do right, no can defense

December 7th, 2011
2:45 pm

@IL jacket: Agree with you on the WRs: We have great receivers like Darren Waller and Matty Alcala just waiting for playing time, in addition Hill and Jeff Greene. All of them are 6-4 or above.

Interesting position on the tailbacks. We have a clear-cut need for 3 main types of RBs: the slow, heavy fullback (think Anthony Allen, Preston Lyons), the fast shifty slotback (Tony Zenon, Embry Peeples), and the tight-end/running-back hybrid types who can block well (Roddy Jones, Orwin Smith). So the pro-set RBs you see in most of college ball aren’t the types we need.

UnbiasedOpinion

@IL Jacket

I agree with you on your point re: the WRs at Tech, and the RBs. For your scheme, you get what you need. However, once again, I have to look at the QB position. With the triple-option scheme, you’ll never get solid talent that can throw the ball. While this may not be an issue if Tech’s goal is to win as many games as possible and contend for ACC titles, if the Jackets want to compete on the big stage and have shots at National Titles, they’ll need a scheme that can come back from early deficits. In order to beat the big, fast SEC defenses, you’ll need more balance.

A team like Alabama, LSU, or even Georgia, which are built around defending against the run, will always beat teams that are run-dominant but not big or fast enough to control the line.

An undefeated season is highly improbable under this system.

IL Jacket

December 7th, 2011
3:17 pm

Unbiased, I hear what you are saying about the QB position. I guess where I am at is given the academic limitations the Institute has in recruiting the ” everyone has to have QB”, I think the CPJ offense may be the best for us to compete consistently for ACC Championships.

My thinking on the limitations on our offense based on our QB production has also undergone so rethinking. For example, I look at Saban’s philosophy, which I think is probably the soundest on CFB today. He has a ferocious defense combined with a ball control offense and what I would
call QB adequacy. I am not convinced that Alabama can come from behind either, say 14 points down after the half, but with their defense they haven’t been in that position lately. So I think there is a path that can lead to great success without a great QB.

Now would I love to have a Cam Newton or even a Logan Thomas, absolutely, but I don’t think all is hopeless without such a player. As an aside, maybe it is just a matter of luck, but someone posted that Thomas started out as a TE. Maybe we should be giving our TEs more time at QB, lol.

Tech should quit playing Ga. We are at a disadvantage because of school work. We should devote our time and effort on winning the ACC, and occasionally play Ga. in early part of schedule rotating with Ga. Southern. Playing Ga. at the end, usually ruins our season.
