Georgia Tech bowl notes

Greetings-

A few notes about Georgia Tech’s berth in the Sun Bowl.

1. Chick-fil-A Bowl president Gary Stokan said that, after Virginia Tech was picked for the Sugar Bowl, making the Hokies unavailable, the choices were Tech, Florida State, Virginia and Wake Forest, all of which were 5-3 in the ACC. Virginia owns wins over the Jackets and Seminoles and has a better overall record than Wake Forest. That decided it, Stokan told reporters Sunday night.

So, it would appear, a win over Virginia would have likely put Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Venturing into the “Tech beats Virginia” alternate universe, though, is kind of speculative. Maybe a win over the Cavaliers would have meant Tech would have lost to Clemson. It opens up a whole world of possibilities. Maybe if Tech had beaten Virginia, I would have won the lottery two weeks ago and I’d be making my first mortgage payment on my beachside mansion on Maui. I’d still be blogging, of course.

2. Virginia Tech getting the at-large big into the BCS is good news for Tech. It’s the first time the BCS has taken an ACC team an at-large bid and gives the ACC two chances to do some work on the league’s 2-11 record in BCS bowls. Clemson plays West Virginia and the Hokies play Michigan.

A second BCS bowl means some extra cash for ACC schools. The payout formula is a little involved, so it’s hard to say exactly what it will mean. But the ACC will get $22 million for the Clemson’s Orange Bowl appearance and $6 million for Virginia Tech’s participation in the Sugar Bowl, according to the ACC. After expenses and unsold tickets, the remainder is split 12 ways. If Virginia Tech’s expenses run about $500,000, that would mean an extra $460,000 for Tech. An interesting read about bowl expenses.

ESPN begins its contract with the BCS this year. As such,  the Virginia Tech over Kansas State and Boise State decision makes a little more sense in light of ESPN’s many, many dollars involved. It would not surprise me if the network’s poobahs said something like, “You know, if Virginia Tech were in the Sugar Bowl, it wouldn’t bother us.”

3. Tech’s trip to the Sun Bowl will be its first game in Texas since losing at Baylor in 1992. Kind of an odd home-and-home. The Houston Chronicle called the Bears’ 31-27 win “an important intersectional victory for the Southwest Conference.” (For whatever reason, Google seems to be able to track down old Chronicle articles well. Kudos for the paper’s SEO guy.)

This isn’t relevant, but I have a friend named Taylor who went to Baylor. She, however, is not a sailor and doesn’t live in a trailer nor was she a fan of the Hartford Whalers.

4. The game will be on CBS, giving Tech national network coverage for its 2 p.m. EST start, always good for recruiting (particularly if you are winning). But it’ll be overlapped by the Meineke Car Care of Texas Bowl (Texas A&M-Northwestern) at noon and then the Liberty Bowl (Cincinnati-Vanderbilt) and the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl (Illinois-UCLA) at 3:30 p.m.

That last one should be fun, a game between two teams whose coaches have been fired (Ron Zook and Rick Neuheisel).

5. Utah has a 12-4 record in bowls, including nine of the Utes’ last 10. The one loss was to Boise State last year in the Las Vegas Bowl. Coach Kyle Whittingham is 5-1 in bowls, his first victory coming over Tech in the Emerald Bowl in 2005.

6. In the “which team has something to play for?” category, put this on Utah’s ledger: Utah has a 19-member senior class that has the second-most wins in school history at 40-11.  Those players can tie the school record for wins set by the 2010 class, which went 41-9.

Tech can finish in the top 25 with a win and stop its six-game bowl losing streak.

7. In the all-important matter of Utah’s familiarity with the spread-option offense, the Utes have plenty. Utah played Air Force, which runs an offense similar to Tech’s, annually in the Mountain West Conference before moving to the Pac-12 this year. Whittingham is 5-1 against Air Force.

8. Not Tech related, but the finalists for the Eddie Robinson Award (national coach of the year from the Football Writers Association of America are LSU’s Les Miles, Michigan’s Brady Hoke, Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and Kansas State’s Bill Snyder.

Who gets your vote?

Thanks for reading. I’ll have Monday practice material up either late Monday or Tuesday morning.

Thanks for all your work covering the Jackets this season, Ken. Your reports are always interesting and fun to read.

Will you be covering the Jackets at the Sun Bowl?

“But the ACC will get $22 million for the Clemson’s Orange Bowl appearance and $6 million for Virginia Tech’s participation in the Sugar Bowl, according to the ACC.”

Considering that both are BCS Bowls, why is there such a big difference in the take?

Hopefully the team can end that awful bowl-losing streak. I’m glad we’ve made 15 straight bowl appearances, but you got to win some of them for it to mean anything!

Also, Gundy for Coach of the Year. HE’S A MAN!!

Wow. You can only imagine how angry the BCS execs are being stuck with two ACC teams. Hands down the worst BCS conference without question, and borderline the worst conference overall. Just horrible.

I travel to lovely El Paso on business occasionally. It is the armpit of Texas.

One tip – make sure your hotel room is on the North side of the hotel – it greatly reduces your chance of getting hit by a stray bullet that was fired in Juarez!

Good luck!

I’m a Tech fan, but its hard to believe that Mike London of Virginia was not included as a finalist, at least, for the coach of the year award. Dabo Swinney? His team lost 3 of 4 to finish the year! If it weren’t for their win over Va Tech in the ACC championship game, we’d probably be talking about how he was on the hot seat.

BCS has to change its formula, Neither the ACC or Big east should get AQ. Much less 2 spots.

Don’t know much about the Utes, but their bowl record seems strong and ours definitely does not. The key for us to win is that our guys have passion and focus. I was in Shreveport last year and neither was present.

I’m proud of the Jackets this year and want us to excel in our bowl game to propel us into a great 2012!

Also, I hope this bowl is Groh’s last one as our defensive coach. We need a younger guy who can recruit and coach players up. Not sure we will ever have the players for the 3-4.

@ Bobby Dodds Ghost –

Most football fans agree with you. What makes it even more pathetic is the fact the Big Easy has THREE TIMES the number of BCS wins as the inept ACC. Just deplorable.

Ken,

I agree with juvenal-

If you win the lottery: buy the property outright. Real estate- they don’t make it anymore.

It’ll be interesting to see if Johnson can find a way to motivate our guys.

Both LSU and Air Force had no problem getting motivated for *us*.

Ken, thanks so much for your hard work all year. I’m sorry you have to read through the worthless comments to sift our a few decent nuggets.

Do you think the ACC went to the PAC, BIG 10 and SEC (the Big 12 and EAST don’t have much say this year) and said “If we don’t get 2 teams in BCS bowls this year we are blowing this whole thing up.” There really is no rationale for VT getting the Sugar bid, other than they will bring fans and ESPN has propped them up as the marquee team of the ACC.

And if the bowl is called the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl and pits 2 teams that do not have winning records and just fired their coachs, I think it is confirmed that we have WAY too many bowl games.

There are 35 bowl games now, but only 55 teams in D-1 (FBS) division finished the season with a winning record. Again, WAY too many bowl games.

And the once proud Gator Bowl is now the Taxslayer.com Gator Bowl and invited two 6-6 teams. It’s not about the games anymore, it’s all about the money. Sad.

Thanks for the lottery advice. I was actually thinking about that on the way back from lunch just now that paying cash would be the smart way to go. when i need financial advice, i know the blog is the place to go.
i should have made that clear about the payouts, given that i was unaware of it until about 15 minutes before i posted. i was in a hurry to get to that lunch i mentioned. (doc chey’s near emory university)
anyway, as Windern noted, a conference gets the big payout for one game and then a smaller payout for a second game. it works the same for any other BCS conference that sends two teams to BCS bowls.
Jacket in SC – i tend to agree with you. i’m not sure how they decided the finalists, but they’re all in the “their teams did exceptionally” category and not the “went from bad to pretty good” category, although it bears mention that no one was expecting much out of clemson this year. or michigan, i guess.
Clemson got no votes in the preseason writers poll and seven in the coaches poll. michigan was also in the “also receiving votes” category. that might make for an interesting blog.

Ramblin.. Living vicariously through other teams again I see. Typical Tech response. Pathetic, but typical, because we beat you again this year so you can’t say anything about YOUR team, so you have to live through the Gators or LSU. Enjoy El Paso and your six game, soon to be seven game bowl losing streak. Does the soft schedule include Tech?

Techies want to talk about soft schedules but don’t want to talk about how the champion of their chump conference got absolutely DRILLED by SEC East #2 this year. This now marks the THIRD year in a row that the ACC Chump has suffered a humiliating defeat out of conference. In 2009, as Techies well know, their Chump program lost to a struggling 6-5 Georgia team. In 2010, the ACC Chump Virginia Tech Hokies lost to JAMES MADISON. LMAO. And now this year’s ACC Chump gets its clocked cleaned by a team that couldn’t even win the lousy SEC East. This is the conference that Tech plays in but Tech fans still want to run their fat mouths about playing soft schedules? Go right ahead Techies. I’m not going to stop you from making a complete fool of yourselves.

Yep, that whole conference strength thing is all about “perception” isn’t it Coach Johnson? Its just a figment of everyone’s imagination!!!

Georgia Tech=JOKE.
