Georgia Tech has accepted an invitation to play in the Sun Bowl. The Yellow Jackets will play Utah Dec. 31 in El Paso, Texas. It will be the Jackets’ 15th consecutive bowl appearance.
“Our team is excited for the opportunity to play in the Hyundai Sun Bowl,” Tech coach Paul Johnson said in a statement. “Our players worked hard this season and we’re excited to have another game to play.
Tech played Utah in the 2005 Emerald Bowl, losing 38-10 and starting the Jackets’ six-game bowl losing streak.

It never fails to amaze me, Ken, that the moronic comments flow so quickly on your blogs. It’s a disservice for the fine work you put out on behalf of the Yellow Jackets. Thanks for your hard work. If you’ve never been to El Paso, it’s a beautiful part of the country (especially if you stay away from the Mexican side of the border).

Hey guys, just so you know, even though I go to another school outside of Texas, I’m originally from El Paso. The Sun Bowl has always been a tradition of mine ever since I was a kid. It’s a fun time and the game gets very good local support since this game is the one big sporting event that El Paso has. I will be down for Christmas break so I will most likely be at this game. El Paso is a wonderful city that has very friendly people and a great atmosphere. For those that will be traveling to the game, I hope you enjoy my hometown and we look forward to a great game out here in the Sun City. If anybody has any questions about where to eat, stay, and things to see, please let me know and I will be more than happy to answer anyone’s questions. Thanks!

Congratulations Jackets!! You’ve worked hard to earn a bowl berth. Now, make us proud and end the 6 game bowl loss streak started by Utah. Play like you should have – but didn’t – against Va, Va Tech, Miami and Georgia. I know your game is in there somewhere – you’ve just got to find it – or it will be another long trip home – and more excuses. I really AM a fan – for a LONG LONG time – I’m just sick and tired of the up and down play and over used excuses. Just get out there and focus on the busiuness at hand. Save the celebrations until after earning the victory. Finish the season with a win and show the national audience you’re for real. GO JACKETS!!

As is 915… I too grew up in EP. If you stay away from Juarez, you will be just fine. Many things to do in EP. Lots of history, not just Texas history either. Very friendly with great hospitality! In the airport, the teams are usually greeted with live music and lots of local flavor. If you are fan of REAL Mexican food, you’ll be in the right place. I’ll be looking at the Atlanta newspapers about the team and the game. If anyone needs ideas on where to eat, things to do, as with 915… I’ll be glad to help. It really won’t matter much to me who wins the game as mush as the game is a good one and the teams seem to have a good time while there. I’ve been to many Sun Bowl games in the past and have enjoyed all of them (except the 6-3 UCLA/Illinois game in ‘91. Bit of a yawner!
) Most fun game was probably the OK St/ W.Va ‘87 game. 25 degrees and a pretty hard snow blowing right in my face! I expect both Ga. Tech and Utah will be very entertaining. Best of luck to the Yellow Jackets!

I’d love to see the ACC do some more tweaking on the rules for the aligned bowls and their selection criteria. We seem doomed to end up getting shipped out west most years. I wouldn’t mind seeing El Paso, but for a $500/person airfare (plus lodging, meals, tickets and incidentals), there are a number of destinations that are higher on my “bucket list” that I’d rather see.
I’d rather never see the Jackets in the Chik-fil-A bowl again. They never seem to play inspired ball there, probably because it’s a letdown not to get to travel at all.
The bowl in Charlotte will always pick one of the Carolina teams (NCState, UNC, Wake, Duke). The game in Tampa will likewise opt for either Miami or FSU if available.
That means that if Tech doesn’t make it to the ACCCG, which would put us in either the Orange or Gator, we’re faced with Shreveport, El Paso, Nashville or DC. Nashville is driveable and not a bad city for a long weekend vacation over the holidays. Not a very prestigious bowl or one with a lot of exposure, but features a matchup with SEC (which has regional interests for many fans).
I hope we do well. I’m tired of the trend of getting waxed in meaningless bowl games in the name of extra weeks of practice and some small net payout for the athletic dept.

The Orange Bowl is burned every year by the hapless, pathetic, sad ACC, like when GT was stomped by slow, German American Iowa farm boys in 2009 and this year will be no different with a 6-5 Clemson ACC C team.
The Orange Bowl will soon dump the contract with the SEC, like the Gator Bowl did, as they would have preferred having a 8-3 Arkansas or a UGA vs Michigan or Arky vs UGA, or Michigan than Clemson and West VA. These two teams will bring some crazy fans, unlike GT did in their humiliating loss to Iowa. GT also lost their last major bowl trip in 67 to Florida in the Orange.

Why don’t we hold an election every year in december to place the correct teams in the NC game. We could run it just like the national elections. We could have head coaches buying tv time to prove that they deserved to be elected. The coaches could hold a couple of debates to convince those sitting on the fence. Imagine the turnout, every four years this election could run concurrently with the Presidential election. This would improve turnout in both elections. If we did this then we would get the democratic process involved so that we could choose the proper opponents.

Congrats to Tech and while I think El Paso ranks below even Shreveport on the excitement scale, if the Sun Bowl committee is well-organized your players and fans can still have a great time. Likewise, I hope UGA enjoys its bowl game. The BCS and Playoff-Pushing Media have ruined the bowl season, which used to be more like a Holiday Exhibition, a veritable Football Festival. Now it is all about two or three teams at the top, and then almost three dozen relatively ignored, second-class bowls.

At this point, the NCAA should just eliminate the bowls altogether. If a bowl is no longer a reward for fans and players, then it just becomes a vehicle for corruption and a four-hour infomercial on the mothership network. The Beauty Contest System (BCS) is a hybrid abomination that pleases neither the media and Vegas-backed playoff supporters nor the college fans and players who just want to celebrate another season in an interesting setting.

I have proven once again that win or lose, still love my Dawgs, life will go on and I certainly place other things in a much higher priority than ANY college football team/game (I didn’t even get to watch the game while dealing with MUCH bigger priorities).
That being said, sure wish the Dawgs would have played the second half as well as they did the first.

Ok, so I missed the fact that the Gator Bowl no longer has a tie in and that the Champs Bowl is in Orlando (not Tampa). My fault.
That said, the central idea of the message was that it would be nice for the ACC to do some tweaking of the system to keep the same teams from going to the same bowls year after year (the BCS bowl tie-in, i.e., Orange nothwithstanding).
I’d drive to Charlotte or Orlando to see the Jackets play a bowl game and I think that many Tech fans in the Southeast would also. Not likely that I, or many others, will travel to Shreveport or El Paso.
But the Charlotte and Orlando bowls are set up to take teams from their area to spark local interest and Tech usually gets chucked from consideration immediately.

It’s not that the belk bowl is set to take a school from nc, it’s just that nc has 4 acc schools, 1/3 of the conf right now. The averages just say it will likely have a school from nc especially since it’s a low level bowl and thats where the unc nc state wake etc will fall.

Tech beat Clemson 31-17 and at the time of that game Clemson was 8-0 and ranked #6. I think that all TRUE Tech fans need to be more positive and appreciate what our student athletes have to do in order to be admitted to Tech, play football while dealing with a demanding academic schedule, and actually try to graduate. Tech does things the right way, and will not recruit certain players that will be more trouble than they are worth (Crowell). We are two games better than we were at this time last year wirh the possibility of going 9-4. We are a young team and I look forward to next year. GO JACKETS anf THWG!

1991 Orange in which Tech whipped Nebraska?
December 5th, 2011

SOme child wrote here that etch whiopped Nebraska in the 1991 Orange Bowl game. Please tell that young person that tech DID WHIP Nebraska AND DID WIN a share of the 1990 MNC BUT IN THE CITRU BOWL. Then, it was only a low level bowl, having morphed into the Citrus form the old Tangerine.
Sad. 1990 CITRUS BOWL IT WAS. Orange Bowl? Tech was there in 67 and 2009. Lost em both. Before 67 and 2009? Maybe in the 40s or 50s ands that is it.
Go Dogs.
