Tech to Sun Bowl

Georgia Tech has accepted an invitation to play in the Sun Bowl. The Yellow Jackets will play Utah Dec. 31 in El Paso, Texas. It will be the Jackets’ 15th consecutive bowl appearance.

“Our team is excited for the opportunity to play in the Hyundai Sun Bowl,” Tech coach Paul Johnson said in a statement. “Our players worked hard this season and we’re excited to have another game to play.

Tech played Utah in the 2005 Emerald Bowl, losing 38-10 and starting the Jackets’ six-game bowl losing streak.

This will be just like the Emerald Bowl of 2005. Utah will dominate again. GT has a good rushing attack. NEWS FLASH!!! Utah has one of the best rush defenses in the nation. Utah 27 GT 10.

Chad, it’s not what kind of defense our opponents have; it’s what kind of defense we don’t have.

@steverino

I doubt your comment even made sense to yourself. “6 national titles in a row???” Looks like Ruben Houston has been selling you some of his better stuff.

Good luck with the cheating. Looking forward to watching your cheats get humiliated as usual in the post season.

Wow. A reasonable Tech fan that has a clue? Fortunately enough the overwhelming majority of Tech fans are delusional and still think Johnson is the answer. I am looking forward to him detroying the little bit that is left of the Tech program for years to come.

What’s happening? Saturday was a long day for us Dawgs.

Sure was. We aren’t as good as Alabama or LSU.

But we aren’t as far away as some might think.

Either way you have to feel things are headed in the right direction in Athens.

The defense has improved dramatically and Murray with this young core of receivers is going to be dangerous for a long time.

As far as the second half goes. Well I guess that’s how Tech feels when they play us.

Good Luck in El Paso, Jackets!

You’re due to break that streak, and bring a bowl trophy home to Georgia. 8-4 is a good season, and your win against Clemson was certainly a signature moment for Coach Johnson’s reign at Tech. Bounce back from your last game, and have a great one in the Sun Bowl.

We’ll be cheering for you in December 31st! Make the State of Gerogia Proud.

I’d love to see the ACC do some more tweaking on the rules for the aligned bowls and their selection criteria. We seem doomed to end up getting shipped out west most years. I wouldn’t mind seeing El Paso, but for a $500/person airfare (plus lodging, meals, tickets and incidentals), there are a number of destinations that are higher on my “bucket list” that I’d rather see.

I’d rather never see the Jackets in the Chik-fil-A bowl again. They never seem to play inspired ball there, probably because it’s a letdown not to get to travel at all.

The bowl in Charlotte will always pick one of the Carolina teams (NCState, UNC, Wake, Duke). The game in Tampa will likewise opt for either Miami or FSU if available.

That means that if Tech doesn’t make it to the ACCCG, which would put us in either the Orange or Gator, we’re faced with Shreveport, El Paso, Nashville or DC. Nashville is driveable and not a bad city for a long weekend vacation over the holidays. Not a very prestigious bowl or one with a lot of exposure, but features a matchup with SEC (which has regional interests for many fans).

I hope we do well. I’m tired of the trend of getting waxed in meaningless bowl games in the name of extra weeks of practice and some small net payout for the athletic dept.

THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL SPORTS MARKET HAS SPOKEN

December 5th, 2011
11:52 am

GT will be paid what from the proceeds? $2.6 Million?
UGA will be paid what from their bowl’s proceeds? $5.2 Million?

Whatever it is ……………………… that differential is what the bowl market deems these two team’s worthiness is, come bowl time. ONE has far more value than the other and one is a member of THE FOOTBALL conference of America, where National Champions come from every year. BOTH are sporting at least 3 losses.

What say you Tech fans? Gonna buy those seats on SW or Delta or Continental?

Watch the Oange Bowl within two more years

December 5th, 2011
11:58 am

The Orange Bowl is burned every year by the hapless, pathetic, sad ACC, like when GT was stomped by slow, German American Iowa farm boys in 2009 and this year will be no different with a 6-5 Clemson ACC C team.

The Orange Bowl will soon dump the contract with the SEC, like the Gator Bowl did, as they would have preferred having a 8-3 Arkansas or a UGA vs Michigan or Arky vs UGA, or Michigan than Clemson and West VA. These two teams will bring some crazy fans, unlike GT did in their humiliating loss to Iowa. GT also lost their last major bowl trip in 67 to Florida in the Orange.

Why don’t we hold an election every year in december to place the correct teams in the NC game. We could run it just like the national elections. We could have head coaches buying tv time to prove that they deserved to be elected. The coaches could hold a couple of debates to convince those sitting on the fence. Imagine the turnout, every four years this election could run concurrently with the Presidential election. This would improve turnout in both elections. If we did this then we would get the democratic process involved so that we could choose the proper opponents.

Congrats to Tech and while I think El Paso ranks below even Shreveport on the excitement scale, if the Sun Bowl committee is well-organized your players and fans can still have a great time. Likewise, I hope UGA enjoys its bowl game. The BCS and Playoff-Pushing Media have ruined the bowl season, which used to be more like a Holiday Exhibition, a veritable Football Festival. Now it is all about two or three teams at the top, and then almost three dozen relatively ignored, second-class bowls.

Bowls Used to be Fun

At this point, the NCAA should just eliminate the bowls altogether. If a bowl is no longer a reward for fans and players, then it just becomes a vehicle for corruption and a four-hour infomercial on the mothership network. The Beauty Contest System (BCS) is a hybrid abomination that pleases neither the media and Vegas-backed playoff supporters nor the college fans and players who just want to celebrate another season in an interesting setting.

The “mighty” Big East has 3 times the number if BCS wins as the crappy ACC. Even the MountainWest has more!!!! Lol!!! You people are hopeless.
