Georgia Tech has accepted an invitation to play in the Sun Bowl. The Yellow Jackets will play Utah Dec. 31 in El Paso, Texas. It will be the Jackets’ 15th consecutive bowl appearance.
“Our team is excited for the opportunity to play in the Hyundai Sun Bowl,” Tech coach Paul Johnson said in a statement. “Our players worked hard this season and we’re excited to have another game to play.
Tech played Utah in the 2005 Emerald Bowl, losing 38-10 and starting the Jackets’ six-game bowl losing streak.

915, I don’t think there will be a problem with the sun going down, since the game starts at noon, El Paso time. And thanks for the info on the distance from the airport to the stadium.

The Hilton Gardens Inn is within walking distance of the Sun Bowl and the Cincinnati Street entertainment district. The downtown Doubletree was completely gutted and redone a few years ago and is half way between the airport and the stadium. You’d be close to Civic Center where the Fan Fiesta (battle of the bands etc) is held the night before and the downtown clubs etc. You’ll be amazingly safe in El Paso and you’ll find that the people of El Paso will go out their way to make you feel welcome.

Supersize… No problem. There is one hotel that is right on the UTEP campus, a short walk from the stadium, the Hilton Garden Inn, that is very good. I don’t know the price, but it’s very close to a lot of restaurants within walking distance and several bars going up and down Cincinnati Street near campus if you’re interested in that. I agree with bookworm, don’t go to Juarez, it’s too dangerous. But enjoy the sights of El Paso and go enjoy the REAL Mexican food we have here. You will not find anything like this anywhere else.

Thanks UGA89. Good luck to the SEC East Champions against Michigan State. Where do you keep the Steves, James, and Coach Turkey Necks at Sanford Stadium? Do you have a special room for them? Hopefully, they don’t sit anywhere near you.

I agree with Sun Bowl Bound, the Fan Fiesta is a must! Also, for those looking for something unique, go to Chico’s Tacos! Some will love it, others won’t, although I fall in the “love it” category. Every local will tell you to go there once, it is a must! Also, it’s cheap too, so it’s not going to burst your wallet.

Supersize… 48 was referring to the colors of the Mexican flag. And seriously guys, do not and I repeat DO NOT GO TO JUAREZ! I haven’t had any family members killed (Thank the Lord) but there were a couple classmates of mine killed over there in Juarez. Forgive me if I sound angry, but this subject I don’t take lightly. It’s a tragic situation over there and this is a bit of a sensitive subject for me.

StupidTech, You’d be amazed how much Juarez cocaine goes to Atlanta. Perhaps of your fellow Georgians stopped snorting so much you could make the trip to El Paso without your kevlar vest?
This reminds me when Oklahoma players declared the Sun Bowl should be moved because of the danger in El Paso, until they realized there’s about a third of the murders and violent crime in El Paso than any major city in Oklahoma.

The Marriot is pretty good, but that might be a bit out of your price range. Some others I would suggest are the Hawthorn, Radisson, the Wyndham and the Guest House hotel. All of the hotels in that area are good and there are a couple of restaurants in that area that are good too.

I was in El Paso two years ago for a mission trip to Juarez. If any of you fans have any time you should check out the restaurant Cattleman’s. It is about 40 minutes east of El Paso on Interstate 10 and is worth the trip and money spent. Good luck Tech.

When I went to Miami in 2009, I didn’t go prepared, and I froze my tail off. I will go prepared for any kind of weather in El Paso. I know one year recently, there was snow on the ground. What is the El Paso rain? Just regular unexpected showers?

Dawg48, Actually it was City Hall. It happened once and it was replayed a thousand times in the media as if El Paso was under attack (thanks Governor Rick Pery). You have a higher chance of getting hit in a drive by in Georgia or getting hit by lightning than getting hit by random Juarez gunfire.
