Georgia Tech quoteboard

RODDY JONES

We’re definitely disappointed in the way that the game ended. It was  pretty emotional game for us being the last game. I guess it’s mainly a disappointment that that’s the way we leave Bobby Dodd Stadium.

On the wheel-route play:

We had a good play call on and Tevin threw a pretty good ball. It was just a little too far, couldn’t get both hands on it. Those are catches you need to make, especially in games like this. You’ve got to take advantage of your opportunities and that was a big one we didn’t take advantage of early in the game.

On offense’s play:

I think we just kind of shot ourselves in the foot a lot. They switched up some looks, so you have to give them some credit. They didn’t just sit back and stay in one scheme. They sent some blitzes and did some different things.  For most of the game, we felt like we could move the ball on them. We just would always stalemate. Missed assignments, missed blocks. Those things killed us. We can’t get in second and long, third and longs. We ‘re not build for that. We just didn’t execute enough.

On the inside handoff play:

Coach had seen something watching some other teams. I think we got it from Army.  Army had run it a lot against Air Force and Air Force plays a similar defense that Georgia does. We decided to put it in. It looked good during the week and so we ended up trying it. We did have some success with it, especially in the first half. In the second half, they started adjusting a little bit and left some guys over there to play it more. But it a good play for us pretty much all day.

STEVEN SYLVESTER

On holding up physically against Georgia’s size

I think we did pretty good as far as up front . We had to get to the quarterback, though. That’s the name of the game especially as a defensive front seven. If you give a quarterback like Aaron Murray time to throw, he has plenty of good receivers over there that he’s gong to find. And it seemed that was our problem today.

On differences in defense’s play since the Clemson game:

I think it’s just playing with a sense of emotion. If you turn on the film and look at the Clemson game, (you see) how emotional we were. Football’s an emotional game. You can’t play it calm. I feel like we’ve come out flat the past couple of games, didn’t quite give as much energy as we should have and attention to detail, but it’s definitely the energy level.

More on the energy level:

It’s pretty much an individual thing. Everybody prepares for the game different. That’s pretty much it. You have to get ready for these types of games. They only come around once in awhile. You only get these guys once a year. You just have to go out there and play with everything you have. I feel like we just weren’t there today.

LOUIS YOUNG

On plans to contain Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray or tight end Orson Charles:

I don’t think it was one particular person. We planned for them to run it, just try to power it at first, try to run it. Their running back wasn’t in the game and then we worked all week we were going to play a lot of man and take away that post route that they beat a lot of teams on so far this season. They hit some good spots, they hit some touchdowns. Like I said, it may have been one missed assignment and you’ve got pay the price for that.

JULIAN BURNETT

On difficulties of zone pass coverage:

It’s hard to say. There’s so much stuff that goes on different patterns and highs and lows and the pattern reads and all that. It’s just not being keyed in or focused enough on your job. One slight mistake can cost you a touchdown.

On Charles:

He’s pretty good player. He was one of the targets on our list. We knew that he was their leading receiver even though he’s a tight end, but he was their leading receiver going into this game. He made the plays that he needed to make and we didn’t. We weren’t in position to stop him. They were able to hurt us with him.

On if losing to Georgia hurts differently:

I guess you can say that. I don’t like losing to anybody and I’m pretty sure that the rest of the team doesn’t. But when it’s in-state and when it’s your rival … we’re tired of being the little brothers in the state. We were hoping for this win. We wanted to fight for it. We just didn’t get it.

It would be truly nice if some Georgia people could win with class for a change. I grew up a Tech fan, listening to Jack Hurst describe Billy Lothridge and Billy Martin and Joe Auer, but graduated from UGA. So now I pull for both teams, with the edge to the alma mater one day a year. I understand that not everybody can like both teams, but I cannot understand why some people can’t save their repressed anger for something else.

Hey team, don’t you dare hang your heads. Feel down & drag around and sulk a bit & fuss & fume some, I did, but know the real GT folks still love ya’ll and wish you the best going forward, and that is the only way you can go. To the departing seniors, THANKS. Ya’ll have a lot to look forward to. If you are on pace to get your degree soon, I’m sure you’ll put it to good use. Some may not quite be on pace to get that diploma this spring, stay in school, get that degree. All the best life has for you seniors. You’ve worked hard and earned a brief respite to assess things. Hopefully ya’ll won’t have too much trouble landing a good job with that GT diploma. It will open a lot of doors in your future. Good luck and God’s best to you all. Again, THANKS!

Seems like a bunch of excuses for non performance. Hard for them to accept that UGA is just a better football team. Better players and far better coached. That high school offense you run may work in the ACC but not against a quality SEC team. When you got down 14 points, I knew it was over because you are unable to throw the ball with any accuracy.

Get accostomed to losing to UGA as long as you retain Johnson and that offense. We probably have 10 teams in the SEC that would beat you. One more thing, we are a young team, only started 3 seniors on our offense and 3 seniors on defense, also we started a fifth string tailback. Be prepared for another beat down again next year in Athens.

If CPJ is allowed to bring back Groh and triple his salary, then he and DRad should be fired also. The guy hasn’t made a halftime adjustment all year. And Clemson turned out to be a fraud, so you can’t give him a lot of praise for that one now. That was just Dabo being a clown as usual and coaching his team down. Groh is like Gailey, a good pro coach, but the college game has passed him by.

Few people ask athletes about their career plans, Brown said. They only ask about sports. As a result, athletes want to take easy courses rather than useful ones.”

Johnson made a bad decision by switching an explosive A Back to the B Back position last year and it cost him some games. He would have come out better by using Lyons or another big B Back for the short yardage job. He is repeating this mistake this year by using an undersized quarterback as the B Back. If he wants to use Sims as a back, it should have been at an A Back position (he is more fitted for that position).

Johnson is also making the same mistake as Gailey. Both let loyalties to starters and his coaches whick is keeping GT from having a winning edge. Gailey would not fire his defensive coordinator, nor replace an innefective quarterback when he was floundering. It cost Gailey his job, and it is presently costing GT in games lost that could be won.

Johnson’s ego is also getting in the way of winning games. He is determined to prove that his method will win games even when the other team stacks the odds against him. He continues to try to push the ball up the middle too much when his best runners are the A Backs. Yes, Washington may be a good quarterback that can ocassionally break for a long gain, but he lacks the power in clutch situations to get needed yardage. He keeps the ball way too many times when he should pitch. Days might do the same, but he has more power to get the short yardage if needed. This is an ego thing with Johnson just to prove his method will work. It is costing games.

He has also lost his edge in the daring-do of the game. He should never settle for a field goal near the inzone against a team like UGA when scoring opportunities are limited.

It should be obvious that the 3-4 defense will never work at GT. It might work at a few schools that can recruit the best interior linemen in America. Even then, they must be rotated extremely often. There is absolutely no way three defensive linemen can withstand six offensive linemen blocking them the whole game. It is foolish to try.

The best defense is an attacking defense where linemen and linebackers can penetrate the offensive line to get to the backs and quarterback. It is also imperative for the linebackers and defensive backs to play close to the receivers on passing third downs. It is frustrating to defensive linemen that they cannot share in the glory of making tackles in the backfield or sacking the quarterback just to keep the blockers off the linebackers. GT must play at least a four man defensive front and even a five man front when the situation demands it.

Another mistake is not playing as many players as possible in a game to keep everyone fresh and the team happy. NO TEAM can be happy when players work their cans off in practice every day just to sit on the bench and watch tired first stringers miss tackles and let receivers run by them for catches.

Either Groh must go or use another defensive method. The 3-4 at GT will never, never, never, never, never, etal, work.

It appears GT needs a new defensive coordinator, a new receivers coach, and possibly a new quarterback coach. If something is not done in these areas, it appears we will need a new head coach before long.

The Old Man.

By the way, just to prove that you don’t have to recruit better to beat UGA, I just reviewed the recruiting rankings for all teams from 2002-2011 (last 10 years) and found that Boise State was not in the top 50 of the recruiting rankings for these 10 years. We know Boise State beat UGA badly this year. It is also significant that GT appeared in the top 50 recruiting rankings six out of the 10 years. Tech was 18, 49, 41, 43, 49, and 50 in six of the 10 years.

Also UCF beat UGA last year and appeared in the top 50 recruiting rankings only one out of the 10 years (39).

Your coach won you a championship and knows what he is doing . he won many games at navy including at ga tech and at notre dame when he coached there. the reason it is called the option is because there is an option to give , keep , pitch ,and sometimes throw on the play . coach johnson does not tell the qb to keep it if the pitch is there .washington takes what the d gives.ga took away the pitch by playing a different d .go build bridges and let him coach you can tell you never played any football.I bet you did not bitch when you got 411 yards on the ground last year .tech does not have 1 player that could start for ga and you still bitch tech has averaged over 30 a game on ga in 4 games . no team can say that .your team is 1st or 2nd in rushing in america with subpar talent i hope you are a big booster and get him fired so we can beat you for 9of the next 10. go reprogram your smart phone

4:23 am

OkieDawg, you are so right. I see you noticed it too that we beat Georgia tek for the 10th time in the 11 years of Mark Richt era so far and DROPPED in the BCS Rankings.

I look forward to the day when we quit playing Georgia tek. It is all they care about, beating us – and, they cannot do it and it means absolutely NOTHING to us.

Georgia tek is obsessed with nothing but beating UGA

November 28th, 2011
4:42 am

Why should UGA concern itself with LSU ? We are not going to beat LSU, any more than Georgia tek was going to beat UGA. The question, then, is not why is UGA celebrating our 10th win in 11 games of Mark Richt vs Georgia tek instead of concerning ourselves with LSU; but, why did Georgia tek obsess itself with beating UGA ?

Because your fans – both of them – look at your won/lost record vs the # 71 Strength of Schedule in the nation today and want nothing more than to beat us. That is all you care about. You could lose every other game, but beat us, and be totally satisfied and you know it.

You are obsessed with beating UGA, and do not want to hear about that your football coach cannot even figure out who his QB is in the last game of the year, that your offense is laughable and that your defense and special teams are the pits.

UGA is the bomb. Georgia tek the pits. You try to talk academics but the facts there too, show that – not only are you on NCAA PROBATION back-to-back repeat offenders of the NCAA Major Infractions database – but, also even with your cheating you cannot beat UGA in graduation rates or APR.

So, you brag what you are going to do to UGA pre-game and then like St. Simons, run and hide for years when it does not begin to materialize. You were NEVER in this game. There was NO POINT during the game where any Georgia tek fan felt that you had the remote possibility to win.

I am not concerned about LSU; and you should not have been concerned about UGA – but, you are. Now, you run in here to tell us that we should be obsessed with beating LSU.

Why ?

Because you want LSU to do what you cannot do, on or off the field vs UGA ?

November 28th, 2011

When the other team is bigger, faster and more skilled, the only three things that can can help a team win in college football are high emotion, superior efficiency and “the breaks.” Tech beat Clemson with all three. Tech lost to Georgia, certainly without the last two and, arguably, without any of the three. Emotion, as a team, is hard to create; it just happens or it doesn’t. Sometimes that oblong spheroid bounces the right way and other times is bounces the wrong way. Efficiency is purely a function of getting everyone to do the right thing on every given play and perfection is illusive. All things being equal, exceptional talent wins the game. National Signing Day is more important to any football program than any scheme, the schedule or the institution. Show me what happens on NSD in 2012 and I will tell you who is likely to win the Tech/Georgia game in 2014.

Please, PLEASE, ADDR, tell the team there is no bowl this year, just a time of “reflection” on what SHOULD have been an 11-1 ACC championship year, at worst. The last thing Tech needs is another embarassing bowl loss in a third-tier bowl.

The coaches need to concentrate on limiting the rejections from our “verbals” that will ensue from Saturday’s debacle, not prepare for a completely meaningless game, recruiting-wise, that no one will attend. Not to mention starting a search for a REAL defensive coordinator.

Boy have Techies changed their tune over the past couple of years. All this crap about not having enough talent is a far cry from the “New Sheriff In Town” tough talk we were hearing a couple of years ago. Back then Paul Johnson’s offense was so genius that he didn’t need talent, but after 3 straight losses to the Dawgs its back to the same ole crybaby mantra of not being able to recruit top talent.

Hey Techies, you know what might help with that talent problem you say you have? Don’t hire a coach that runs a gimmick offense that doesn’t prepare players for the next level. Don’t hire a coach who considers defense an afterthought. Don’t hire a coach who half azzes recruiting and downplays it because he too lazy to do it effectively. Don’t throw your players under the bus everytime said coach falters. Nobody wants to play for fans like that. And try going to the games for once. Nobody wants to play in a stadium that is mostly filled up with opposing fans for the few big games you play in every year.

Look, your entrance requirements for football players are slightly higher than most BCS schools. I admit that. I also happen to care less. That’s your problem. I don’t know what you expect out of everyone. Are we supposed to spot you two touchdowns every year because all your management majors have to take “A Survey of Calculus?” Not happening. We hate you. Why would we spot you anything? If this academic presents such a competitive disadvantage for you then you need to drop out of the D-1 level. I don’t know what else anyone can do for you. If you aren’t willing to do that then please quit your incessant whining and just play ball.

I know, crazy of a hater like me to give you advice isn’t it? Well, if I thought you were smart enough to heed that advice I would be concerned, but that isn’t the case.

I read your blog to get a feel of how Tech fans feel about your team and coaching staff…not to hear trash talk from other dawg fans. Are you guys happy with your current staff? Groh wants to run the 34 defense but as UGA showed last year without the right players it just doesn’t work well. Maybe another year recruiting his type of players will show better defensive results. UGA91: I think Tech can have success with the TO. The service academies run it with success under severe ht & wt restrictions so Tech should be able to recruit even better players—the O-linemen are typically smaller and quicker which gives Tech a talent pool that other major schools don’t go after. The QB spot is the key and finding good athletes that don’t have the NFL arm, but can run and throw reasonably well is a larger pool of talent than your standard pro drop back passer. It’d be nice if we’d throw the ball 25 times a game though—our spread formation could easily incorporate play action–fake dive play two step drop and then pass to an A-back 4 or 6 yds downfield—high percentage pass plays. For some reason we don’t seem to run many such plays. As for Defense—UGA has done better developing the 3-4 than Tech. It remains to be seen if Tech can get the recruits to get the D to a point where it is feared. I think CAG is a good coach, but you’ve got to get the players.

Nice post and whoever your Jackets get in a bowl should get owned if Groh can tighten up the holes in the middle. TD: Being tight with the Lord is the best approach for the ultimate game called life. You are correct—the 3-4 needs a beast at NT and we’ve got a guy with heart, but not enough talent or size. He has to draw a double-team or disrupt the play as your NT did a few times—a critical one on your two yd line. The charade is over….ya’ll Tech boys had a few good players, but lets see how many chop-blockers and small backs you bring in now; Gimmick offense is exposed! You’ll never have a great q-back, as one who wants to survive will not come run a triple option. Good coach ya’ll have, but as with any gimmick, once its is exposed the better athletes take over…..

LOL yeller .. a sumo wrestler??? That’s freaking funny. Yeah, I think the NT position has to be someone who can still move around with some level of athleticism yet still come in at the about 6-1, 330+ .. Another year of recruiting and maybe Groh has the players he needs for that system.

As for “being tight with the Lord”, I too am “tight with the Lord” and yes, I believe it gives me advantages in life that I didn’t have any other way.

Ken, I’m interested in what you and your Tech readers think the reason is for uga dominating Tech like they have in recent years when other good teams have not, at least not to the same extent.

Here is a quote

November 28th, 2011
12:02 pm

GT for 2011 has hit bottom. A loss to UGA AND COACH MARK RICHT for the 10th time in 11 years, third time a row and TWICE IN BDS@HGF, NCAA probation for the SECOND TIME IN 8 years, no bowl or a very, very, very, very low level bowl vs Elon College or Citadel. Next year? The same.

UGA? Opportunity to play the REAL # 1 team in the USA and make tons of $$$ in the SEC C G and THEN ENJOY A FABULOUS BOWL TRIP and all the prestige that this brings. UGA IS THE TEAM TO TALK ABOUT ALL OVER THE USA ………….IF WE win.

UGA next year? Oh ……………wait and see with all of the FROSH TALENT and depth returning. Watch UGA sign TWO TOP BACKS …………………then UGA in 2012 will be a load. UGA has a BRIGHT FUTURE for two or three years. Exciting this is.

CPJ? His future NOW is the 2012 HOT SEAT. GT is going no where and fast with that funky triple option middle school thang. UGA OWNED IT.

Be scared, be very scared of getting within gunshot range of El Paso’s border with Juarez. Obama flooded the Mexican drug market with guns and now that place is very, very, very dangerous to Gringos.

If the Sun calls ………………..GT do not answer.

Reggie Ball is 40% (4 out of 10) of the reasons. UGA typically has better talent. Why has UF owned UGA? In the Tech-FSU series—Tech won the first 7, FSU the next 12 or 14, then Tech the last 2. Sometimes things run in spurts. I still think CPJ will make this a more competitive series. We complete that first pass play to Hill and Tech is up 7, don’t call a timeout on the FG attempt (luck of the draw there), don’t turn it over twice on our side of the field and the series between CMR and CPJ is 2-2. If UGA wins the next 3, then we’ll have to do something different.

Mike Bobo called the game knowing he could throw against Tech any time he chose. No doubt he didn’t want to completely embarrass that old fart who carries the title Defensive Coordinator. By the way I am older than he.

What if, what if, what if .............please

November 28th, 2011
12:52 pm

Murray had his usual three or four badly thrown balls to WIDE OPEN receivers. Had they been on the money and the UGA # 35 LB after his PIC not allowed his knee to touch turf, then maybe UGA adds another 21.

What if ……………….UGA had ANY decent backs in the game? Huh?

Stop with the what ifs ……………….. UGA owned that triple option thing for the third UGA WINNING year in a row. CPJ is toast. HE is on the HOT SEAT.

Trivia question: How long has it been since Tech won a bowl game? Answer: Long enough for Tech to be thankful it’s in the ACC because they get their arses handed to them when they play out of conference.

-yawn- CPJ is far from the hot seat. When you’re projected to not make a bowl game and end up 8-4, you’ve surpassed expectations. Remember the “lack of talent” that we had at the beginning of the year and how “miserable” we were going to be? Well we did somewhat decent with a win over a then top-10, undefeated team. UGA was the better team. They beat the brakes off us. It happens. They managed to bottle up the option (you’re kidding yourselves if you think UGA has “owned” the option the two years prior. Giving up 58 points isn’t a good thing) and got the ball to their playmakers. There are plenty of teams that are in a worst position than we are (see Tennessee, MSU, Ole Miss, Duke, Vandy, Illinois, Ohio State, Penn State). I like where we stand and hope we can keep momentum going into the bowl game and get a 9 win season out of it.

Kudos to UGA on a good season and hopefully they beat LSU (I have some fraternity brothers who are from the bayou and God only knows I don’t want them to beat their chests about LSU).

Nothing like flipping through the comments and seeing how all the dogs win with class. I’m also not sure how the 12 year old idiots that post on both boards and rile people up somehow justifies poor sportsmanship on behalf of the mutts.

You guys were the better team on Saturday, but GT is a young team and will be back in full force next year. Keep in mind this is a team that was picked to finish 4th in its division in the ACC, not win the mighty SEC east.

A d’s mission is to bend but do not break. Allow yds if you must, but no scores or less pts. than your team gets. UGA over the last three years in a row vs GT’s triple O has owned the triple option, because GT has LOST all three games.

On to bigger and better things is UGA and the following years.

CPJ? HOT SEAT because his O IS NOT winning anything and in fact, is getting worse, if you look at their bowl venues lately and soon to be announced low level bowl. No titles, no nothing.

His decision to hire AL Groh is reason # 2 why he is on the HOT SEAT.

My brother-in-law and my first cousin are eating it today. Big long-time Tech fans who really hate Georgia. I’ve been a UGA fan since the days of Zeke Bratkowski. I just don’t remember running to many Dog fans who exhibit their level of animosity. Because of that, it’s the highlight of my year, to beat Tech. Rubbing it in to these haters is special. We are not Oklahoma or Alabama. We are good but not great. We have coaches that are not ex-GT football players so they care more about winning the ACC as opposed to beating Georgia. To me, I prefer we lose 11 and win 1 – vs UGA! We need a coach who is an ex-GT football player. Then we will have someone in the helm that understands the importance of the game and treats it as the most important game.

About two years ago, John Chavis left UT for LSU and Mark Richt needed to make a great D co ordinator hire. Chavis turned Richt down, as did Ellis at SC and Foster at VPI (Va Tech) and the local bloggers ( would be Tech fans) made hay with the turn downs. Rememeber that?? Funny it was ……….right?? CMR “was a fool.” right???

Last year neither LSU nor UGA were in the SEC C G and both of these men stayed home. THIS YEAR BOTH CHAVIS AND GRANTHOM are in the DOME for the SEC C G and BOTH HAVE TOP NOTCH D TEAMS. Period, end of story.

My point is that Richt DID MAKE a fabulous hire. At the time, with the UGA turn downs, and eventually find of CTG, I said it was like being told your three favorite steaks have sold out and we “had to settle” for CTG ……………….a FILET. See? All of the potential UGA D co ordinators were fabulous …………………INCLUDING CTG. LOOK AT HS RECORD.

GT is a loser with CPJ …………..no titles, no bowl wins, no respect and COACH MARK RICHT HAS CPJ has is whipping boy. Clemson is so bad that even SC stomped them and SC COULD NOT even win the “lousy SEC East”. Right? Lousy ? SC WHUPPED CLEMSON, the likely ACC Champ.

CPJ IS on the HOT SEAT. Ask the GT alum golfers out at PDC or ACC or AAC or Ansley GC last week. THE GT grads last week in my foursome were mumbling out loud as my partner and I ( UGA MEN) WHUPPED EM over 72 holes in 3 days. $$ it was so lovely.

The only reason we rip on TECH so hard is because you all give us crazy reactions such as yours. We get a rise out of the shear inferiority complex that is being a TECH fan. Of course its a rivalry…..the play on the fight song certainly is no worse than the crud Tech folks put out…..this ain’t one-sided. As far as other comments go, human sacrifice aka playing QB in ya’lls triple option will net you an athlete, granted. However, you won’t get a real QB, which is what you need to win. The gimmick is exposed. Ya’ll may luck one out on us occasionally but until you stop with the gimmick offense you ain’t gonna be consistant…..ever! Tech has, in fact, had powerhouses in the past, and will again. But gimmicks get sniffed out usually.

It may be a rumor, but is not out of the question that Paul Johnson would probably like to relocate back to a North Carolina school since that is his old stomping grounds.

It might actually turn out for the better for Tech if he was hired by another school. The Triple Option can work well for the academies who are limited in their recruiting from the git-go. It is not a negative for them to lose out on the skilled athletes who are interested in a pro career. However, it is a negative for a school like GT who could recruit better skilled athletes with a spread offense including multiple passing formations.

Tech offers a good education to those skilled athletes who can enter under our academic limitations, and there are plenty athletes who are both skilled and smart. Tech is further limiting its already limited recruiting by making it unattractive for the skilled receivers and quarterbacks.

Why is this fact not obvious to everyone? We are academically limited in our abilities to recruit enough super DTs at Tech. We then limit ourselves even more by placing just three good defensive linemen up against up against seven extra big offensive linemen (center, two guards, two tackles, and a tight end) by using a 3/4 defense.

By the way, we will never have any trouble recruiting the skilled athletes in the defensive secondary to make up for not getting the best of the defensive linemen. We have never had much trouble recruiting good linebackers at Tech.

Why don’t we at least play a four or five man defensive front (giving us more good defensive linemen to offset the six super offensive linemen). We can recruit good defensive linemen all day long even with our limited academic situation. NO, we play stupid and play three good defensive linemen against six super offensive linemen. Our coaches are not very smart.

This is a good year if PJ wants to leave. We can go after the Boise State coach, the Houston coach, or some other good coach who wins with less talent. and systems that draw the skilled athlete.

Another “by-the-way”: Even if a coach is leaving any of the Universities for another job, it would be foolish of them to let it out until after the bowl games.

The Old Man
