Georgia 31, Georgia Tech 17

Three quick thoughts.

1. Missed opportunities in the first half. The first play, not scoring a touchdown after reaching the Georgia 2-yard line, the timeout on the missed field goal. I’m hardly convinced it would have made a difference, but it reduced the Jackets’ margin considerably. The third quarter extinguished it completely.

2. The Tech pass defense didn’t cut it. Most times, Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray had time to throw and open targets to throw to. Sub-par all the way around.

3. Tech proved again it can run the ball. Against the No. 2 run defense, the Jackets cleared 225 yards. However, it wasn’t nearly, nearly enough. The Jackets needed some sort of big play or three – a blocked punt, a long punt return, an interception taken back for a touchdown, an 80-yard touchdown run – and couldn’t summon it.

What do you think?

Tech’s O-Line is pretty good. They open up HUGE holes. Their problem is that they can’t get pressure on the QB. I’m not one of those UGA alumns who trash Tech…I hope they win every game but one. The kids that play for Tech are mostly Georgia boys and I wish them all the luck in their bowl game.

Charleston Jacket – I think calls for wholesale changes on the coaching staff are premature. Look at Auburn. “National Championship” last year, this year they get truly blown out by Georgia and Alabama. They have the youngest team playing FBS football. Tech has the 2nd-youngest.

One of the senior DBs for Tech this year got pushed so far down on the depth chart 2 years ago you couldn’t find him. He started this season out of necessity. Logan Walls has graduated, and someone is going to have to replace him full time next year. Barnes may or may not be the guy; he’s 6-7 and nearly 350 but doesn’t play a lot. I didn’t notice him today. Sylvester will be gone at OLB, as will Peters at DE. Both of the backup DEs, Dieke and Cummings are rs-sophs. If Holton returns strong form his injury, he should be an upgrade; the guy is a physical beast according to the players.

The 3-4 has been a disappointment in that the reason it is employed is to better deal with the kind of passing attacks that Tech saw today, last week, the week before that, Miami and against Clemson. Only against Clemson, and sporadically, VT has it produced results. With a 3-4, you have to be very physical at NT and at ILB, and have one of both OLBs be a premiere pass rusher as well as be able to cover the outside run. It looks like Attaochu is going to develop into that. Burnette plays very physical, but he isn’t that big. Nealy, a rs-freshman looks like he is developing well.

Other than the 4 starters on defense I mentioned, everybody else is back. Only Jones, Peeples, Melton and Lyons on the offense will not be back. I don’t think it’s time to just tear everything apart.

Great win for us. I have to admit, I was surprised at how well we defended the TO.

Grantham is the real deal and our defense is legit.

Johnson should have kept his mouth shut through the week IMO. Always respect your opponent.

Tech needs jimmys and joes, not more x’s and o’s. Need a QB in a bad way. Need D linemen.

Win your bowl game and go 9-4 with a young team.

Take care.

Today was the first time I have truly been disappointed in CPJs coaching. That said, I am a CPJ fan and he will make adjustments he needs to win. I am amazed at the impatience that college football fans show toward their coach when these same fans would never want such standards and criticism to be applied to themselves in their own professions. Congrats to UGA.
And let this be an apology on behalf of Tech fans for

Congratulations to the dawgs. The better team won today. Have t give the dawgs credit for turning the team around after the two early losses.

As for Jackets, DawginLex is right. Problem isn’t coaching but a lack of talent. We need a QB who can hit open recievers and at least make the other team respect the pass a little. And we have to have some Defensive linemen who can put some pressure on the passer.

I think most Tech fans understood we had these problems coming into the season. Unfortunately, the good start likely raised expectations a little above what this bunch could accomplish. Good news is that I thik we will be improved next year.

“Attendance was 54,925, which was 75 short of capacity. The Tech student section was not completely full.”

That is a quote from Ken in his story about the Sun Bowl. I will be very interested to see the report from the consultant Dan Radakovich hired to assess the attendance issue. At the VT game, 2 Georgia fans were sitting behind me. We had a long discussion during halftime. They work for ATT across the way from the stadium. It turned out that each attended high schools that my kids did. They said they were given the tickets by 1 of the “400 Tech grads they work with” and came to root against Tech. I had no problem with that, and we had a lot of good discussion.

The feeling I have is that many of the current Tech students and recent grads (I had not been to any games in the last several years, and I am not a grad myself) aren’t the guys I grew up with and worked with for many years. The student body is changing, and it is obviously increasingly difficult to get the necessary background for attending schools like Tech, due in part to the state’s ongoing issues with science and math education. I’d like to see the demographics of the student body. I also think it is also due to kids in the area not being focused on football as most southern kids were of earlier generations. In small-town Georgia, that was a huge focus in my generation.

Any number of a host of other factors may have something to do with the issue. Years ago, I and one of our company’s other managers had 2 Masters tickets each to invite a couple of managers in our client organization to attend. We ended up just giving the tickets to them because were were both burned out by the job.

Okay, after a while to relax and take things in stride I feel like I can comment without exploding ;-)

1. End the 3-4 experiment, Tech will not and cannot recruit the size needed. Any HS D lineman at 315-320 and quick will have offers at AL, LSU, GA ect. It is quicker and easier to recruit to a 4-3, Tech has always been able to recruit linebackers.

2. The QB competition in the spring had best be intense. Even today Tech had recievers open for good gains IF the ball had been delivered accurately. I don’t want to hear this O is not conducive to passing. The routes are there, we’ve seen it all year.

3. Every lineman in the weight room as much as possible in the offseason. S&C is the key to growth in power and endurance.

4. In my opinion it is time to part ways with Al Groh. I just don’t think he is a good fit.

As I said before the game win or lose I will be a fan of Tech and nothing will ever change that!

Congrats to GA on a well played game.

GO JACKETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, who called Roto-Rooter? That has to be the only way all of this junk ended up on this site.

Looks as though the UGA fans want to prove their IQ’s equal their maturity age, aka 6 1/2. Georgia Tech is always number one, no matter the score/record! Maybe that reality is the root cause of the bitterness UGA fans stew in day to day.

Okay UGA fans, it’s time to start filling out your absentee ballots for Obama…
