Georgia 31, Georgia Tech 17

Three quick thoughts.

1. Missed opportunities in the first half. The first play, not scoring a touchdown after reaching the Georgia 2-yard line, the timeout on the missed field goal. I’m hardly convinced it would have made a difference, but it reduced the Jackets’ margin considerably. The third quarter extinguished it completely.

2. The Tech pass defense didn’t cut it. Most times, Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray had time to throw and open targets to throw to. Sub-par all the way around.

3. Tech proved again it can run the ball. Against the No. 2 run defense, the Jackets cleared 225 yards. However, it wasn’t nearly, nearly enough. The Jackets needed some sort of big play or three – a blocked punt, a long punt return, an interception taken back for a touchdown, an 80-yard touchdown run – and couldn’t summon it.

What do you think?

The missed chances came on the UGA side. Georgia should have put 50 up against them, even though they quit passing in the 4th quarter. Missed FG, sack when UGA was on the 25 and pushed them back to the 40. Should I continue?

With that name, Idoub’t you went to Tech. Losing is tough and UGA fans are NOT Walmart fans or retards. Your coach is a prude and needs to get a life. He will suffer at a young age with all that stress and anger. Good luck in the Toilet bowl.

I have been an ardent supporter of CPJ for 4 years. Now I am really starting to cool on him as I do not see this team progressing as it should. Did not expect to win today but thought we would be competitive. Can we afford Urban Myers?

I still beleive in the offense but not with tevin ball in there ! I have lost a lot of respect for CPJ this year. I said six weeks ago we needed to play Vad Lee, oh no we can’t do that we might loose some games. Well guess what we did and now instead of giving Vad some game experince this year we will have another green QB next year. Now if we loose recruits like we did last year after the season was over we deserve it. Why in the world did CPJ stick with tevin ball ? Anybody could see as the talent we played went up (except Clemson, and Oh the reminds me so much of Reg Ball) tevin balls play went down. Orwin Smith deserved more touches than he got !!!!

I am sick of PJ and Tech’s lack of passing game. GT can’t seem to pass in a big game when they need to the most. Defensively, GT got shredded. All my fellow Jackets fans bragging about how UGA could run the ball, heck, they didn’t have to. They threw it all over the place.

It’s stupid for CPJ to go for it on 4th down all the time. If GT could pass on 1st, 2nd and 3rd, they would need to do that. All it does is get you behind if you don’t convert and give up good field position. I’m telling you guys, GT should get rid of PJ and get Terry Bowden.

GT needs better players on offense, mainly receivers and someone who can throw the ball. GT def took a step backward from last yr.

Problem is that talented receivers don’t generally pick a school that runs the option.

Even if GT is able to recruit some good receivers, the coaches don’t know how to utilize them and the QB can’t throw it to them. This “experiment” is dead. Get a new coach.

2nd—-I’m thru supporting Al Groh. Why you ask? How many illegal substitution penalties did we get because he couldn’t get the right defense on the field in time. He over schemed the running game knowing they were likely down to normal bench warmers at RB. He under schemed the passing game knowing full well what a stable of healthy receivers Georgie has with a more than adequate QB to pass the ball down field. I’ll give Paul Johnson 1 more year of my support in hopes that he can develop some type of at least a 50% percent passing game. Neither 1 of them seem able to motivate their players. These young men need MOTIVATING. And we all know about the ills of the kicking game. Way too many bad kicks period. One punt goes 60 yards or more, the next goes 25 -30. One KO goes thru the EZ, the next goes to the 10 or 15 if that deep. I doubt they would even look at that Tn. kid that Sam has been pushing all season long. We were capable of keeping this game close enough to be winnable, but they shot themselves in the foot too many times. Oh well, it is what it is and I still love GT, but I hate this miserable feeling, especially over 1 lousy game and even more so for being 1-10 against Richt. IT SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO JACKETS THWG OVER AND OVER TO INFINITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the defense absolutely stinks! No pass rush–no blitz– no defenders having any idea where the pass is! No improvement over the course of the year. No coach ==no win in football with out a defense that can stop people–I don’t care how good the offense is!! PJ needs to realize this or move on!

Thanks Big Al for a great season, you are the best, we would have been alot worst if it wasn’t for your great 3/4 defense. You are the master of defense. Damn, I just woke up, I guess I was dreaming. Maybe I will go back to sleep and they fire Big Al, then if I get real lucky, Big Al and CPJ can hold hands and walk off into the suset together. Gosh I am seeing a blue Astro Turf in the future, maybe 3 weeks. I see us losing again in a bowl game. Maybe if we are lucky the coaches won’t show up…….

If tevin ball is quarter back next year I will not watch GT football. We have got some pretty good running backs, somebody needs to get the ball to them !!! I know in this offense there is going to be days where the quarter back racks up some big yards but not everygame. I have grown tired of GT football these last few weeks.

Groh’s defensive scheme does not match with PJ’s offense. We need an aggressive, pressure defense (ala Tenuta) to force some 3 and outs and some turnovers. It may result in some big plays, but it doesn’t leave our offense on the sideline while the opposition moves the ball downfield in chunks with short passes (with no pressure on the QB). Groh’s scheme is “bend-don’t-break” and it ultimately breaks too often.

Groh’s gotta go.

Johnson turned said something to Groh as he passed by him on the sideline late in the 4th quarter. It gave Groh a look of dyspepsia. I wouldn’t be surprised if Groh announces his retirement at the end of the year.

Okay maybe we can’t afford U Myers – How about G Oleary? at least he knew how to beat UGAG. 3 in a row as I recall. another disappointing year. Not sure we are going to have much to cheer about next year either with this coaching staff. 4 yrs later and we simply are not progressing. Today was dismal with too many mistakes, poor qb play, lack of defensive prepartion and execution – just all around not up to div 1 football. We are a young team so hopefully we will get better next year. Seems we are always looking to next year – enough let’s go get some high profile coaches that can recruit and acutally know what they are doing and turn this thing around.

VT consistently puts a very competitve team on the field year in and year out. They do it with consistent coaching on both sides of the ball and outstanding special teams. There is absolutely no reason we cannot do the same. However, we need the coaching staff to do that and we simply have not had good coaching since Oleary/Fridgen. Time to put some serious thought into this coaching staff.

GT folks – one day you might realize that the triple option is a play, not an offensive scheme. Any defense with a decent DC and athletes on the defensive side of the ball will limit the TO. Al Groh’s gig is up and Fish Fry needs to carpet bag somewhere else if you want to be competitive.

3 and out??? What’s that?? Haven’t seen one in a long time. I’m sorry to say but this program is going downhill like a runaway freight train and no one seems to be putting on the brakes. If you think about it Tech could come up with a pretty darn good coach that could run a traditional offense with emphasis on special teams and defense for what Tech is paying CPJ and staff.

Ken, just a short note to tell you how much I enjoy your blog, and the way you deliver both info and facts; very reminiscent of how real sportswriters did so in the old days.

Reality and perception…as a UGA fan of LONG standing- 3 letters under CWB- I was firmly convinced that we would use our size, line up and run it at y’all all day long; sadly, for you guys, that seems to be what you believed and prepared for as well. After the Ky. game, who could blame you. So much for reality.

What surprises me is the flak your fan base seems to be giving CPJ, who by all the reports I have gotten from Ga Southern folk, is one heck of a good guy, as well as being a great coach, which I believe him to be. His offense is exactly what GT needs because he does NOT have to recruit head to head on a consistent basis with the UA, AU, Fla and the UGA’s of the world…except on defense. There is where the 4 and 5 stars CAN and would shine and be able to play at the next level. I fail to understand why more emphasis is not placed the defense in your recruiting efforts.

Just think, if your D was capable of throwing 3 and outs routinely and you kept running your O not much better than you do now, you might NEVER lose. Again, that is perception. Reality? Who knows!

In the meantime, keep the faith, do well in your bowl, have grand holidays and hopefully, we’ll have at it again next year….and in passing, it is during this season that I miss my old fishing partner, and son’s Godfather, the most! A greater guy you would never meet…and an All Amreican end from Ga Tech, as have been many of my friends- Gnats- over this 75 year sojurn, and that really is reality
