Three quick thoughts.
1. Missed opportunities in the first half. The first play, not scoring a touchdown after reaching the Georgia 2-yard line, the timeout on the missed field goal. I’m hardly convinced it would have made a difference, but it reduced the Jackets’ margin considerably. The third quarter extinguished it completely.
2. The Tech pass defense didn’t cut it. Most times, Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray had time to throw and open targets to throw to. Sub-par all the way around.
3. Tech proved again it can run the ball. Against the No. 2 run defense, the Jackets cleared 225 yards. However, it wasn’t nearly, nearly enough. The Jackets needed some sort of big play or three – a blocked punt, a long punt return, an interception taken back for a touchdown, an 80-yard touchdown run – and couldn’t summon it.
What do you think?

One more thing about the state of affairs on the flats. CPJ’s 1st class graduates this year. In this era of instant gratification I am not suprised with fans wanting a MNC yesteday. This class consist of 11 young men and all are on track to graduate or have already recieved their diploma. The incoming recruiting class wll bring Tech to the full 85 on scholarship for the first time since CPJ arrived. If in 2 years we are looking at 7-8 wins then it would be time to look for a change but until that time I will continue to support CPJ as Tech’s coach.

Eh, OJF, I’m fine with seven or eight wins a season, but I want that one or two seasons every five where we give it a real run for the conference championship.
Beyond that, as long as we play hard and smart, I’m fine letting the chips fall where they may.

I haven’t given up on anything. Given what Tech is I’m amazed we field a team as good as we do and I cherish every single win!!!! The reality is we really have no business winning as often as we do. As for the Georgia game, whooopee. I’m numb to it. Tech is what Tech is and Georgia is what Georgia is. I satnd by the statement, kids go to Georgia to play football…..they go to Tech and also play football.

George, the UGA band did a tribute to Munson at halftime? I sure didn’t know it; I didn’t even realize they were on the field. Like you said, nobody pays attention to half-time shows. After the tribute to the astronauts, I wasn’t aware of anything else that happened at half-time, and no, I was not drinking. It’s just a matter of who cares about the half-time shows?

George, 7-8 in a young team year is fine. When you get to the point where your starting 22 are JR and SR that just doesn’t fly with me. If you’re getting players in the pipeline that are recruited to run this offense you shouldn’t find yourself being young at key positions. Looking at Tech roster it’s getting to the point where Tech won’t have to worry about being too young on the O and D lines.

You ask me how is it that its cpj fault? These are HIS players, HIS system, and HIS staff. Ever since that top 25 recruiting class (Dwyer, Burnett, Morgan, etc.) left we have been mediocre. Please tell me how many games we would have won without those sort of playmakers back in 2008 and 2009. Back with other coaches we at least had good chances of winning tougher games (Ross, O’Leary) Just think about letting him go if we lose the Sun Bowl

OJF, but we WERE young this year, second only to Auburn from what I have read. Not using that as an excuse, but it’s a fact. If next year and the year after are both bad, then we can obviously say that experience is not helping either.

Sure, OJF. I would assume that those would be the seasons we’d make a run.
Yeah, I couldn’t make out what they were doing but I wasn’t really watching, either. But I heard the students – presumably hammered – doing that stuff. Not a good job by those kids.

One thing about the 7-8 wins, teams are playing a 12 game regular season schedule. 7 -8 wins today equates to 5-6 wins with 10 or 11 game schedule.

UOAD, there were very few seniors today who actually played. And they appeared to be playing their hearts out. But when the rest of the team is too young to help them, then you sure can’t expect those few who are playing to carry all the weight.

I don’t know if he’ll go to Ole Miss or not. I do know the expectations of the fanbase vs the reality of the situation are wearing on him. I’ve been told he took the job thinking the expectations were similar to that of Navy so negative results on the field aren’t as big a deal and positive results are cherished. That is definitely not the case at Tech where the fanbase is much more vocal than at Navy and has a heightened sense of the program as compared to Navy. I’ve also been told he’s really worn out on the level of recruiting he’s had to do. He’s not good at it and at GSU he really only went in a plucked off the best athletes on small HS teams and plugged them into the system and at Navy his recruiting was essentially done for him but he got really really smart and DISCIPLINED kids so the execution there was far better than at Tech. Of course all of this comes to me 2nd hand from within the AA.

OK, new rule. If you’re calling for Johnson’s job (seems crazy to me, but let’s set that aside), you need to present a list of candidates not named Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, etc. Deal?

I think Bill Curry made a fair start towards that end, but he was lured away, Dodd’s blessings the way I heard it. I think Bobby Ross was doing it, but his ambition and the Chargers got in the way. At least he went to the Super Bowl, but it sure did age him. I thought O’Leary, as long as he had Friedgen, was doing it. Bill Fulcher may have had a good start, but who knows what got in his way. So don’t tell me it can’t be done. I refuse to be that negative. And oh BTW, I called for Groh to be replaced next year and CPJ given i more year to show marked improvement in all phases, I made that call today in an earlier post.

I will say, Johnson looked exhausted at the end of the 2009 and 2010 seasons. He looked tired this year but less so than the past two seasons. I have no idea what, if anything, that means, though.

Forever, do you remember Fulcher? He COULD have been a GREAT Tech coach; he learned under Dodd, he had a winning attitude and a great rapport with players on every team he ever coached (as an assistant or as a JV coach). But the expectations of the fanbase wore him down so much, he was gone after 2 years. I never did understand what happened there.

Forever, re your last post about expectations, etc……If Johnson would swallow some of his pride and admit that he can’t do EVERYTHING, then maybe he would hire a REAL recruiting coordinator and (GASP!!!) either an coach to “assist” him with the offense or a QB coach. I DO like Johnson, but there are some ways that he has that he would be better off modifying
