Injury situation clear for Georgia Tech

1. Following Wednesday’s practice, Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said that “everybody should be good” for Tech’s Saturday game against Georgia. That would include A-back Roddy Jones and wide receiver Stephen Hill, who came back to practice after being held out Monday and Tuesday, and guard Will Jackson, who was held out of the contact portion of Tuesday’s practice.

2. Chick-fil-A Bowl president Gary Stokan said Wednesday that “You’ve got to consider Georgia Tech strongly” for the Dec. 31 bowl game at the Georgia Dome. To be considered, though, Tech will have to defeat the Bulldogs Saturday. The other teams on the bowl’s ACC short list are Clemson, Virginia and Virginia Tech. On the SEC side, Auburn and South Carolina are the two leading candidates, with Georgia an outside possibility.

Representatives from the  Champs Sports Bowl and Sun Bowl also both re-affirmed their interest in Tech Wednesday. Champ Sports Bowl CEO Steve Hogan said that Tech would not necessarily have to beat Georgia to be considered. The other ACC schools that the Dec. 29 bowl in Orlando is looking at are Virginia, Virginia Tech, Clemson and Florida State.

“I think they’re right in the middle of the picture,” Hogan said of the Jackets.

3. Barring something crazy, no posts Thursday. I want to wish everyone a happy and safe Thanksgiving. I have a great deal for which to give thanks, including a lot of encouraging and engaging blog commenters.

Thanks for reading.

Amazing video of a high school senior from Columbia TN who kicks the ball dead straight 75-80 yards in the air. He was successful on 54 of 54 attempts this season….100%. Now he needs a college team. Wants to go to GT

Looks like MOST of Chris Harris’s kicks are somewhere in the 70-75 yard range. In college, that’s right around the middle of the endzone. It’s not exactly breathtaking, but it would certainly be an improvement over what we’re dealing with now. He’d probably get even stronger as he got older, too. I’d like to see him at GT.

Just figured there was a lot of come and go traffic thru here so I was flashing it up hoping to catch the one individual who might can do something. Tech has been in contact with him. He was a high school teammate named Shaq Mason who is a freshman OG. Shaq can vouch for him. He can kick the mile a mile. Sorry, I just saw some of the other comments / questions. Yes, he has a bunch of offers. Mostly a bunch of small schools plus Memphis, Southern Mississippi, MTSU, type schools. For some reason he fell in love with Georgia Tech at an early age. I don’t have a clue why. He kicked all three years for his high school team. They were state runner-ups, state champs and then 9-2 this year. They scored a ton and didn’t really need him to kick many field goals. He was always really really straight but just picked up a lot of power over the past 4-5 months. He worked hard and packed on 15 pounds of solid muscle from last year. He is a stout 6′1″ 205 strong kid. SInce he was somehwat of a late bloomer, he didn’t even go thru the RIvals rating deal. He is on the ESPN list. Thanks for any and all help!

One question for you smart young engineer types…I am trying to get his You Tube count up to 10,000 or so. Is there any way to write a little software routine to hit his video all night to run the count up? I know I’m not the first to think of that but just curious if it is possible.

If he ends up at tech, you will have a whole bunch of new fans from middle Tennessee! We hate UGA so we already have that in common.

Oh, boy, all the Georgia tek fans – both of them – are out in force on this blog. Injuries ? Georgia tek averages the # 51 recruiting ranking every single season under Paul Johnson, which explains his pitiful record even against a FAR LESS TOUGH Schedule than Mark Richt every year. NCAA PROBATION back-to-back REPEAT OFFENDERS in ALL THE MAJOR SPORTS, especially FOOTBALL. 40-17 UGA. Your rush offense goes up against the 2nd worse match-up Paul Johnson could ever even possibly hate to go up against, the # 2 Rush Defense of Todd Grantham. This, while of course Georgia tek puts up its HORRIBLE SPECIAL TEAMS and its HORRIBLE DEFENSE of AL GROH.

# 72 Rush Defense Georgia tek
# 64 Scoring Defense Georgia tek
# 75 Defense at getting sacks Georgia tek
# 96 Tackles for loss Georgia tek
# 61 Turnovers Gained by Defense Georgia tek
# 89 Georgia tek 3rd Down Conversion Defense

This while UGA puts up the # 2 Defense in the nation. Bad match-up for Georgia tek after what Aaron Murray did to you last season.

That’s what I want to see in this game; our best against your best, though I’m uncertain UGA’s best RBs will be able to play.

Anyway, it’s always a good rivalry that I look forward to.

Hope we both play injury free and I think we’ll see a good game. If we win, good luck to Georgia Tech in the Champs Bowl.

I forgot to say…a huge THANK YOU for all the views of the kicker video! He really loves Georgia Tech. He has applied but doesn’t seem to think that he will be accepted with the low 26 ACT score. If he can get into school there with help from the football team, I think he would probably walk on. Both of his parents are Memphis grads and they have offered him a full ride. That might be hard to turn down but the Memphis program is a real mess these days. He would like to run with the big boys so GT certainly fits the bill. Plus he has an older brother who is currently the # 2 kicker for Purdue (he is not nearly as good). Chris would kinda like to go to an engineering school that is ranked higher than Purdue plus good at football. GT stands out as the obvious choice when you factor in all those factors.

On the comment about no fans at the game…those first two kicks are from the one game I actually saw him play. At the time, Chris team was 8-1 and had already won the district. My home town team (Winchester, TN) was terrible and just playing out there last game. It was 44 degrees at kickoff in a light mist of rain. If you look closely, you will see the referees wearing gloves and there in an umbrella in the lower right corner on the second kick. Chris’ team lead 49-0 at the half. You had to be a true fan to be at game. What was amazing is that it had rained for two days and the field was a big sloppy mess. But he still hit the crossbar three times in the second quarter alone. That first kick on the video hit the crossbar and you see the football bouncing back into the endzone,

If you look at most of the top high school kickers, they will be kicking into the end zone. But the returners will at least be dropping back to catch the ball in the end zone. If you watch closely, with Chris, the return men usually never ever move. They just stand there and look up as it sails over their head. Like when Pujols cracks a 500 foot dinger and the center fielder never even moves.

In May of this year, the best high schoolkickers in the south assembled in Atlanta for an event called the Southern Showcase. I have attached a link to the results. Scroll down in the important category of ‘Field Goals Made’. You can see that Chris tied for first making 9-10. And then they have a ‘Pressure Round’ where they make a bunch of noise and distractions. He was 3-3 in that. He is one of those rare kids who just really loves the pressure.

Lastly, I will mention that he also has a freak of nature 14-year old little brother who is 6′4″, 240 pounds, less than 5% body fat, faster than his two older brothers, size 17 huge massive feet who plays middle linebacker and tight end. The kid looks like a coke machine with a head. As a freshman this year, he started at tight end for the defending state champion team. He is the biggest 14-year old that I have ever laid eyes on. Obviously a lot can happen over the next three years, but if he continues to grow, he is going to be a 6′8″ 290 pound, 4.7 40, heat seeking missile middle linebacker in the Class of ‘15. Whoever gets Chris will have the inside track on him. they are close.

Too much info for one message but there it is…thanks again for all the views. Leave him a message on YouTube to go Tech. If we can get him into school, you may be looking at your future kicker.

I hope the Jackets pound them, then LSU will beat them by about 40 points, and the puppies will end up playing in the Toilet Bowl. I’m just glad they finally had a semi-decent year such that Richt can hang around another five years.

After playing quarterback at the University of Tennessee, he served as an assistant coach under Bill Alexander at Georgia Tech beginning in 1931. Alexander made the hire while Dodd was still a student at Tennessee. Dodd succeeded Alexander in 1945 as the third head coach at the Institute. He retired from coaching after the 1966 season, compiling a 165–64–8 record. He also served as Athletic Director from 1950 until 1976. All told, Dodd spent 45 years at Tech in various capacities. So, he completed 95+% of his course work. Thats not exactly being a “college drop out.” Of course, Mr. Brown, having not the slightest understanding of history, has no idea what the Great Depression was.

The real Thomas Brown has been involved in trying to improve UGA’s treatment of student-athletes.

According to The McDuffie Mirror:

The whole atmosphere surrounding UGA athletes is a factor, according to Thomas Brown, a football player who Richt hired as assistant strength-and-conditioning coach. Few people ask athletes about their career plans, Brown said. They only ask about sports. As a result, athletes want to take easy courses rather than useful ones.

Sam, Dodd was a “trophy player” for General Neyland at Tennessee. Neyland never forgave him for leaving Tennessee and taking the job at Tech. That wasn’t because he left before graduating; it was because Neyland assumed that Dodd would stay in Knoxville as one of his assistants. He literally never got over Dodd’s “betrayal.”

Sam

Interesting! As I recall, Neyland was very stubborn. If he thought Dodd bailed on him, then I’m sure he never got over that slight. he was a classic old school coach but he has his quirks.

I don’t know much about GT. Saw some of the game where they beat Clemson. That offense is really clever. Hard to tell who has the ball. I wish I had paid more attention to their kicking game that night. Do they have a special teams coach? Seems that I read somewhere that they share that duty among 2-3 coaches. If it fair to say that they don’t practice the kicking game stuff as much as most teams? Kinda trying to read between the lines here…

Tech plays legitimate student-athletes who will go on to successful careers in industrial management and engineering.

Georgia plays bozos who would not have met the academic requirements to enter any college or university. The few who actually graduate will have worthless degrees and skills for which there is no demand. Most will be pathetic losers who are a burden on society. Fortunately the CEOs of Walmart and Waffle House are Tech alumni who will give some of them jobs, but even a graveyard shift fry cook has to have some skills and the ability to stay sober.

Yes, Tech fans would love to defeat Georgia more often, but not at the win-at-all-costs price that Georgia pays.

Next time you see a homeless drunk, be kind to him, he may be a former UGA player.

Sam, Tech’s kicking game has not been good lately. Now Dodd lived and died by the kicking game. Field position was everything to him. In fact, he could punt a ball 50 yards and hit a bucket. Tech needs a strong kickoff and field goal kicker. So I hope your young friend gets a chance.

Sam, Tech does NOT have a single special teams coach; it IS a shared duty among several of the coaches, including Johnson. I thought that sounded a bit strange, but apparently most (not all, but most) schools do the same thing. What Tech is sorely in need of is a GOOD kicker and a GOOD punter. So if this guy you have been talking about is really that good and is actually interested in going to Tech, then do whatever you can do that is PERMISSABLE to get the Tech coaches to notice him and hopefully go after him. Coverage and returns have improved a little this year over last, but improvement is definitely needed in those areas too.

and i dont see any of your esteemed colleagues writing about WHY the sec has won 5 of the last championships. it is not because they play the best football …. it is because they cheat to play the best football. AND i quote…..

The first thing that jumps off the screen is that despite being out of college football for 2 years (2005 & 2006), Nick Saban still signed 193 recruits, which is second only to Les Miles his successor at LSU when Saban left in 2005. Saban also has the highest average recruits per year at 27.50. In 7 years, Nick Saban has never signed less than 25 recruits in a single year.

Let’s compare that to the same set of years (2002-2004 & 2007-2010) for the coach with the lowest numbers, Jim Tressel. Tressel signed 142 players in the same years that Saban signed 193 recruits. That is a difference of 51 players over the same period of time, 7 years. That is mind boggling to say the least.

it is no coincidence that the top 2 teams in the country also lead the country on over signing. not only do they have more quality up an down their roster but it is how those extra players are chosen is what makes the difference. instead of carrying a player that turns out to be a bust, they find an excuse to move him off the roster in order to move someone onto the roster that is more productive ant talented..

instead of the ajc penning columns that are meaningful they chose to pick on meaningless fluff that cpj said re a dim witted uga fan.

if you really want to pen a good article check out this read…..

http://collegefootball.about.com/od/rulesofthegame/a/Oversigning-College-Footballs-Hidden-Problem.htm

there is a reason why uga and richt are always also rans these days. i find it amusing and amazing that the dawg fans are more concerned about a ‘retard’ comment than stuff like over signing.

ken cpj was exactly right.

November 25th, 2011
3:27 pm

27.5 average x 4 = alabama signs almost 115 players every 4 years to populate a roster that should be limited to 85 every 4 years. and these are just not any old players they sign. they are able to pick the best of the best using this technique.

crack down on over signing and the sec is just another conference.

ken cpj was exactly right.

November 25th, 2011
3:53 pm

By far, the worst of the BCS conferences in terms of oversigning is the SEC, and it is not even close. SEC schools oversign their rosters more than any other conference, specifically schools such as LSU, Alabama and Ole Miss. The statistic that stands out the most is the number of times between 2002 and 2010 that SEC schools signed 25 recruits or more in back to back years: 54, as compared to the Big Ten’s 18. That is staggering. We actually took a closer look at all the numbers and posted them on the site:

Well, I must give credit when it is due. At least CMR adheres to the intent of the rules. He honors his christian morality. 25 signees per year max and 85 total on the roster in any 1 year, I believe. I suppose if the schools could get them, the walkons could be unlimited

19, when it’s safe to do so (no imposters in the room), I will give you a temporary email address so we can stay in touch—–IF you are interested. I have several other posters in my email address book now, although not in the temporary one. Once somebody who emails me there contacts me and “proves” who they are, I give them my REAL email address. Maybe we can do that soon.

Dawg’88…………and SUH donated enough equipment for a whole high school football team that had lost/destroyed theirs. That doesn’t make the bad stuff SUH does OK and same for the BAD dawgs. Not All the dawgs are bad but plenty are.

Sorry, HOt SEAT, you couldn’t be more wrong. I am well over 60 and involved in the Tech fund, and he is NOT on the hot seat. Tech is not guilty of cheating (read the report), and CPJ wasn’t at Tech 8 years ago. Get a life, little girl
