1. Following Wednesday’s practice, Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said that “everybody should be good” for Tech’s Saturday game against Georgia. That would include A-back Roddy Jones and wide receiver Stephen Hill, who came back to practice after being held out Monday and Tuesday, and guard Will Jackson, who was held out of the contact portion of Tuesday’s practice.
2. Chick-fil-A Bowl president Gary Stokan said Wednesday that “You’ve got to consider Georgia Tech strongly” for the Dec. 31 bowl game at the Georgia Dome. To be considered, though, Tech will have to defeat the Bulldogs Saturday. The other teams on the bowl’s ACC short list are Clemson, Virginia and Virginia Tech. On the SEC side, Auburn and South Carolina are the two leading candidates, with Georgia an outside possibility.
Representatives from the Champs Sports Bowl and Sun Bowl also both re-affirmed their interest in Tech Wednesday. Champ Sports Bowl CEO Steve Hogan said that Tech would not necessarily have to beat Georgia to be considered. The other ACC schools that the Dec. 29 bowl in Orlando is looking at are Virginia, Virginia Tech, Clemson and Florida State.
“I think they’re right in the middle of the picture,” Hogan said of the Jackets.
3. Barring something crazy, no posts Thursday. I want to wish everyone a happy and safe Thanksgiving. I have a great deal for which to give thanks, including a lot of encouraging and engaging blog commenters.
Thanks for reading.

Interesting! As I recall, Neyland was very stubborn. If he thought Dodd bailed on him, then I’m sure he never got over that slight. he was a classic old school coach but he has his quirks.
I don’t know much about GT. Saw some of the game where they beat Clemson. That offense is really clever. Hard to tell who has the ball. I wish I had paid more attention to their kicking game that night. Do they have a special teams coach? Seems that I read somewhere that they share that duty among 2-3 coaches. If it fair to say that they don’t practice the kicking game stuff as much as most teams? Kinda trying to read between the lines here…

Tech plays legitimate student-athletes who will go on to successful careers in industrial management and engineering.
Georgia plays bozos who would not have met the academic requirements to enter any college or university. The few who actually graduate will have worthless degrees and skills for which there is no demand. Most will be pathetic losers who are a burden on society. Fortunately the CEOs of Walmart and Waffle House are Tech alumni who will give some of them jobs, but even a graveyard shift fry cook has to have some skills and the ability to stay sober.
Yes, Tech fans would love to defeat Georgia more often, but not at the win-at-all-costs price that Georgia pays.
Next time you see a homeless drunk, be kind to him, he may be a former UGA player.

Sam, Tech’s kicking game has not been good lately. Now Dodd lived and died by the kicking game. Field position was everything to him. In fact, he could punt a ball 50 yards and hit a bucket. Tech needs a strong kickoff and field goal kicker. So I hope your young friend gets a chance.

Sam, Tech does NOT have a single special teams coach; it IS a shared duty among several of the coaches, including Johnson. I thought that sounded a bit strange, but apparently most (not all, but most) schools do the same thing. What Tech is sorely in need of is a GOOD kicker and a GOOD punter. So if this guy you have been talking about is really that good and is actually interested in going to Tech, then do whatever you can do that is PERMISSABLE to get the Tech coaches to notice him and hopefully go after him. Coverage and returns have improved a little this year over last, but improvement is definitely needed in those areas too.

Sam, if you would like to learn more about Tech’s illustrious history, then I highly recommend the books “Dress Her in White and Gold,” “Clean Old Fashioned Hate,” and “Dodd’s Luck.” The first one deals more with the entire history of the institute, but there’s a lot about football and traditions in there too.

I never heard anything about enmity between Dodd and Neyland. I listened to many interviews with Dodd, mostly on the Sunday show where they would show the game film, with Dodd giving the play comments. He had an obvious admiration for Gen. Neyland. “Gen, Neyland said…Gen. Neyland would…” etc.

Please allow me to translate Buzzzz’s posts for those who are not familiar with Tech fans:
“Losing to UGA year after year after year makes me cry. I am such a loser that I will make up lies about their players and make up excuses for Tech players. I am a sore loser who cannot handle losing with even a shred of class. Where is my mommy?”
Thanks.

Delbert, the enmity was one-sided. Dodd apparently always loved and respected Neyland, or was either too nice a man to say otherwise. But, at least, initially, Neyland was totally pi$$ed at Dodd for leaving him.

and i dont see any of your esteemed colleagues writing about WHY the sec has won 5 of the last championships. it is not because they play the best football …. it is because they cheat to play the best football. AND i quote…..
The first thing that jumps off the screen is that despite being out of college football for 2 years (2005 & 2006), Nick Saban still signed 193 recruits, which is second only to Les Miles his successor at LSU when Saban left in 2005. Saban also has the highest average recruits per year at 27.50. In 7 years, Nick Saban has never signed less than 25 recruits in a single year.
Let’s compare that to the same set of years (2002-2004 & 2007-2010) for the coach with the lowest numbers, Jim Tressel. Tressel signed 142 players in the same years that Saban signed 193 recruits. That is a difference of 51 players over the same period of time, 7 years. That is mind boggling to say the least.
it is no coincidence that the top 2 teams in the country also lead the country on over signing. not only do they have more quality up an down their roster but it is how those extra players are chosen is what makes the difference. instead of carrying a player that turns out to be a bust, they find an excuse to move him off the roster in order to move someone onto the roster that is more productive ant talented..
instead of the ajc penning columns that are meaningful they chose to pick on meaningless fluff that cpj said re a dim witted uga fan.
if you really want to pen a good article check out this read…..
http://collegefootball.about.com/od/rulesofthegame/a/Oversigning-College-Footballs-Hidden-Problem.htm
there is a reason why uga and richt are always also rans these days. i find it amusing and amazing that the dawg fans are more concerned about a ‘retard’ comment than stuff like over signing.
ken cpj was exactly right.
November 25th, 2011
3:27 pm
27.5 average x 4 = alabama signs almost 115 players every 4 years to populate a roster that should be limited to 85 every 4 years. and these are just not any old players they sign. they are able to pick the best of the best using this technique.
crack down on over signing and the sec is just another conference.
ken cpj was exactly right.

By far, the worst of the BCS conferences in terms of oversigning is the SEC, and it is not even close. SEC schools oversign their rosters more than any other conference, specifically schools such as LSU, Alabama and Ole Miss. The statistic that stands out the most is the number of times between 2002 and 2010 that SEC schools signed 25 recruits or more in back to back years: 54, as compared to the Big Ten’s 18. That is staggering. We actually took a closer look at all the numbers and posted them on the site:

Well, I must give credit when it is due. At least CMR adheres to the intent of the rules. He honors his christian morality. 25 signees per year max and 85 total on the roster in any 1 year, I believe. I suppose if the schools could get them, the walkons could be unlimited
