Greetings-
Notes from Tuesday.
1. Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson, whose oft-unfettered tongue and unwillingness to back down to rival Georgia have earned him the admiration of Tech fans, apologized for a poor choice of words on his radio show Tuesday night.
Near the end of his show, a caller, presumably a Georgia Bulldogs fan, came on the air and said, “Hello? Hello?” and then began barking before either hanging up or being cut off. Johnson responded, “Hello? Hello? He just got off from Walmart.”
Johnson, who earlier in the day had commented how most Georgia fans he encounters are cordial, said, “Anybody who calls into a radio show and barks is either retarded or doesn’t have a life.”
After the show, Johnson said he meant his response as a joke, “but it was a poor choice of words on my part and I sincerely apologize. It was not my intention to offend anyone.”
Advocates for people with mental disabilities have campaigned to stop the use of the word “retard” or “retarded” as a slur, calling it hurtful and dehumanizing.
(Not sure what to say. It was a poor choice of words.)
2. A-back Orwin Smith, who sat out last Saturday’s game with a toe injury, practiced Tuesday and will try to play in Saturday’s game against Georgia.
“I will at least try,” Smith said Tuesday. “The worst that can happen is me going out there and me not being able to play, but I will give it a shot.”
Smith said he ran full speed at practice and “limped around a couple times,” but overall said he felt great. Smith is the Yellow Jackets’ most dangerous playmaker on offense. He averages 10.8 yards per carry and 23.8 yards per reception and has scored 11 touchdowns in 65 offensive touches. He has been receiving a variety of treatments, including hot and cold tubs and ultrasound, to stimulate healing of his turf toe injury, typically a painful malady.
Wide receiver Stephen Hill and A-back Roddy Jones were held out of practice for the second day in a row, but both expected to return to practice Wednesday and play. Guard Will Jackson practiced but was kept out of contact drills.
(The fact that Smith may be hampered is, obviously, noteworthy. Bears watching.)
3. Hal Miller, an All-American offensive tackle and a co-captain of Tech’s 1952 national championship team, died Monday following a short illness. He was 81.
In 1952, Miller helped lead the Jackets to a 12-0 record and a Sugar Bowl win over Mississippi, giving them the titled awarded by the International News Service. Born in Kingsport, Tenn., Miller was enshrined in the Georgia Tech, Georgia and Tennessee sports halls of fame.
The school is working on a tribute to honor both Miller and legendary Georgia play-by-play voice Larry Munson, who died Sunday, at Saturday’s game.
(While it’s sad news, I do hope that both are honored before the game.)
4. Hill is friends with one Georgia player he’ll likely see plenty on Saturday, cornerback Branden Smith. The two hung out last summer, Hill said. They played each other in high school and Hill played basketball and long jumped against another Georgia corner, Brandon Boykin.
“They’re real fast,” Hill said. “Their technique is great, so it’s going to be a challenge.”
5. Defensive coordinator Al Groh on Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray:
“He’s certainly as good as we’ve seen. We compare him and his skill level to (Clemson quarterback) Tajh Boyd. He moves very well within the pocket as well as getting out. … He’s always got his feet underneath his shoulders. He re-sets very quickly. He makes a lot of big throws when the rush initially makes him move off his normal throwing spot without leaving the pocket.”
(One thing I appreciate about Groh: No player assessment will ever be, “Kid’s got a rocket for an arm.”)
6. Wide receiver Tyler Melton has been playing his best football the past two or three games, Johnson said. Melton has seven catches in the past three games for 122 yards, including three for 54 yards against Duke. The seven receptions are more than he had in any of his first three seasons and as many receptions as he had in the first eight games of this season. He has also blocked particularly well over that stretch.
Johnson said he’s not making a concerted effort to get Melton the ball, “but when the ball’s gone his way, he’s made a couple of nice catches and come down with it.”
(Melton has shown some nice ability to adjust for passes. I have no idea what his draft stock is, but he’s shown plenty of other skills – namely blocking ability and special teams play. If he can keep up his pass catching, he’ll hopefully get a shot in somebody’s camp. Remember that Kevin Cone – who caught six passes last year – fought his way onto the Falcons practice squad.)
7. Tuesday, Johnson dismissed an Internet report that Mississippi had contacted representatives for Johnson regarding its coaching opening.
“I don’t know anything about it,” he said. “That stuff’s crazy.”
I want to thank the posters who have kept things clean and respectful, for the most part. I was very tempted to not post the notes on the blog, because this seems like a fire waiting to happen, but decided that you deserved a chance to comment on it. If the posts aren’t respectful, however, I’ve got no problem closing commenting, and probably for the rest of the week. Please don’t be the bad apple that spoils it for everyone.

and that is why we hate uga because there are too many guys like that. Anyone catch the end of the UGA game of 08. that’s the one where Johnson turned to some finer UGA fans and had Dionne choice words for their behavior during the game being overly obnoxious. Then he runs out on the field and shakes hands. It’s amazing how he had to apologize for that type of behavior. He’ll have the jackets ready to play.

Are Tech fans embarrassed by a coach who advises his team’s fans to punch people in the face and makes fun of mentally challenged folks? For an institution which prides itself on being above other schools it seems to tolerate a lot from this PE Major from Western Carolina.

The Walmart comment wasn’t the problem. It was the “Retard” that was out of line. If Richt had said something like, Bradley and Schultz would have already written 2 or 3 columns condemning him but it’s a great coaching ploy by Johnson trying to rally his players according to the AJC. BTW I like shopping at Walmart and you’re lying if you say otherwise Tekkie!

S’paw, he absolutely needed to apologize. As soon as you use the term “retarded” in a mocking manner, you manage to mock the very last people that deserve mocking on this earth. Johnson either doesn’t have very much class, or he isn’t mature enough yet to be making public statements while representing a major university. Which is it?

No doubt, the caller certainly does not appear to be a top level contributor to society.
However, even children know better than to call someone a retard. To disparage employees from

Although a good coach, CPJ often conducts himself like an impetuous child.

Every other comment in these blogs say as much. Why should he apologize………..especially since he probably gave the idiot a comment. Walmart, I’d say many Ugag fans would love to get hired by Walmart.
And as far as retard, well that’s been around for years. Thin skinned people need to get tough. Political correctness is way over rated. It’s a blog, a radio show, etc. It’s not like CPJ called out someone in the crowd. This had better not escalate, becuase Ugag has more low life idiot fans than any team in the nation.
You watch on Saturday………6:00 AM, sitting on a chair on top of their 4-wheel drives barking like the idiots they are at every Tech fan that comes to the game. Retards, idiots, low lifes, non-educated, trash. That pretty much sums up Ugag. Seen it a thousand times.

I don’t really see how the mutts, or anyone, can try and take the moral high-ground. It seems to me that “retard” was deemed politically incorrect rather recently. All through middle school and high school, people would say retard ALL THE TIME. It seems like the more recent batch of kids have been taught to avoid that word.
I thought nothing of it when I read that CPJ said that. He should be held to a higher standard since he is our head coach, and he made a mistake. But he did the right thing and issued an apology. What else can be said?

This is an embarassment to Georgia Tech so I’m not sure why some of you are condoling it. I was embarassed for UGA with the Todd Grantham incident. Also, you just made fun of someone for their last name…someone who is the OC at one of the premiere college football schools in the nation, played for that same school as qb, and holds several records for that school. I’m sure these things outweigh a simple last name. Also, you insulted our DC..who happens to be the hottest coaching commodity in the nation right now because he took a defense that ranked 70th in total defense to 4th in two years. If you still don’t understand why GT’s defense let uga score at the end of the game last year, you know nothing about football (or math). We got the ball back and had a chance to tie the game. I rarely post on these college blogs, but I read them. As I’ve pointed out before, you’re one of the best to come down pipe and the Tech folks are lucky to have you over here… You’re putting it straight down the middle and giving them proper perspective…
I said it more than ten days ago, this is the “silly season,” especially because of the immaturity that comes along with college football actually means something beyond being a game set of fans. But, the Johnson statement was unfortunate. At least he was man enough to understood that point. As I know from the past six days, you have to deal with every illiterate blogger trying to make a name or fool of them self, even on something as silly as a blog…

I fail to see the problem with Coach’s comments.
The way I understand it, the people pushing this campaign are against people using the word “retarded” as an insult; Johnson used it sincerely. Barking constantly could be construed as a sign of someone having Down’s syndrome.

My goodness, there is going to be a great game Saturday and all you can talk about is a comment made by Coach Johnson. Life goes on. One of the great college rivalries will be played on the Flats. I hope Tech fans will show Southern hospitality and UGA fans will respond in kind as guests. We work together, live side by side, go to school together. This week brings out the worst in our friends and families! Say a prayer for Larry Munson…the voice of football in the South.yes, I grew up hanging on to every word, play by play on Saturday. Richt’s is on here today if any would like to read it.Richt goes out of his way to compliment Johnson and the Tech team and Johnson earlier this week said everything but “screw them’ when asked about Richt and Georgia……. He really is a little man………………And after getting beat this Saturday, he’ll tell the press in so many words, ” I did my job, you need to talk to the team”……………….class A jerk. Perfect fit for him.

Two Things
Most of us on here (both fan bases) have more in common with each other than lots of our own family. We love our teams and watch lots of football. We spend time reading this stuff. In real life we catch crap from our families because of this obsession. Yet we treat each other, often, most unfairly. We are definitely not so different. We should try and be more civil. I moved here as a young person and love Tech because that was my school. But I have tons of UGA friends. Wife is a grad. We NEVER talk to each other like this.
Also, I know its obvious but Tech also beat the team that made the Clemson win look not so good – at their place.
OK. Three things – EVERYBODY have a happy and safe TDay.

I would be offended by Johnson’s comments if I actually cared what he had to say about anything. The man has done nothing in his time at Georgia Tech other than win the weakest conference of the BCS level and run his fat mouth in the media. He never backs down to Georgia? A 1-2 record against them suggests otherwise. Football games are not won on radio call in shows. Paul Johnson is a total joke.
What strikes me as the most humorous about this is the hypocricy of Tech fans. Can you imagine the river of tears that would be flowing out of North Avenue if Mark Richt ran his mouth about Tech like Paul Johnson runs his mouth about UGA. We all know Richt would never do that because he’s a grown up and has something we like to call CLASS, but imagine if he did. Techies would be outraged. You can’t say anything to those idiots that is remotely critical about their program or school without them running straigh to mommy.

I like Richt kissing his wife the other day or whatever happened that day. Gives his a different look from the preachy guy that then encourages his players to knock somebody’s head off. He reminds me of Johnny Depp as he wonders across the field after the Kentucky game.
As for CPJ the world could use a dozen more like him. When a guy is shooting it straight he is not always making friends. Real people don’t need to guard their mouths as much, they walk the walk so why guard the talk. If that is what you want you should have gone into politics or been an actor on Leave it to Beaver named Eddie. I bet Penn State wish they had a coach that, “gave you what you see is what you get.” Johnson is not bitter at the world he has no ax to grind, he is an open book that is not trying to change his personality to hide his real self. I like the guy, and will like him even more if we beat Georgia, but no matter he has his stick together and Tech is clearly a better place with him there.

Funny that people bring up how “classy” Richt is. Let’s get a transcript of the conferences where these quotes were taken out of context.
Richt gets questions along the lines of: “Can your team stay focused against this lesser opponent when your team is playing a huge game the next weekend?”
Johnson gets questions along the lines of: “Can you possibly keep up with this juggernaut SEC team?”
Of course Richt plays up his opponent, and of course Johnson downplays his opponent. It’s the correct course of action to keep your team focused in both circumstances.
As for Johnson’s comments to an obnoxious dork on the call-in show, does anyone remember Richt biting the head off of one of his own supporters before the year?
But people will believe what they want to believe. Same old song and dance.

Attention: Hit a Single.
It is a well-known/well-publicized fact that the high-tech video presentation
developed EXCLUSIVELY by GT was the DECIDING FACTOR in Atlanta
getting the 1996 Olympics. That was acknowledged by no less than Billy Payne himself.
It was that presentation that gave a graphical/video outline of the city and all of the
to-be-developed venues that was the critical component to winning th 1996 Olympics.
Without that custom-developed software/video presentation which was created by GT software engineers, then Atlant doesnt even make it to the 3rd round of voting.
That is a FACT publicly acknowledged by no less than BIlly Payne himself.

Just more bulletin board material as if UGA needed any to beat Tech. The only thing that matters Saturday is who wins the game and moves on. All the comments about SEC this, ACC that, don’t matter a squat. It is UGA versus Tech. and the records speak for themselves. If Tech. has the team to stop UGA, bring it on, because no matter what the coaches say, or don’t say, not a one of them, is going to strap it on, and take the hits and physical beating that comes with playing football. I could care less what CPJ says, because it is up to him to find a way to beat UGA. If he thinks responding to an over zealous fan by insulting Walmart employees or people with learning disabilities let him have at it. In the end, when you get your butt handed to you, whether you win by 1 point or 40, a win is a win. The last ten years the record stands at 9-1 in favor of UGA. There are no minor or moral victories on the football field. You lose, and that’s it. The statistics in the series through the last decade show what team has left the field victorious the great majority of the time.
See you on Saturday.

That’s the problem with PC. If he had used “mentally challenged” would anyone have conjured up a different mental image than “retard”? You can sweeten up the names all you want but the meaning doesn’t change. I don’t see the comment as that god awful but he shouldn’t have said it and he quickly realized it and said so.

I have a 10 year old daughter with special needs and she has been nothing short of the greatest gift in my life. I take real exception to personalities running their mouths ( Shapiro has a history, and now PJ) to get a little laugh and show their true character. If they really had it, good character, this wouldn’t roll off the tongue effortlessly. My daughter has dealt with heart complications and leukemia, and struggles everyday with tasks you and I take for granted. My daughter has fought for her life and won, and is now striving to be a productive student and citizen in our society. I’m glad PJ apologized, but fear this man’s true character has been exposed. Prop up the special needs community. Most of these individuals have more character than all of us!

Johnson was just being honest? Was that a joke? Tech pretends to turn its nose up to “sidewalk fans” but then runs huge ads in the AJC and elsewhere begging these same sidewalk fans to buy tickets to their football games. Johnson was being anything but honest. He knows damn well that his athletic department would kill to have the same kind of non-alumni SIDEWALK support that UGA gets. Why else would they run those ads Techies?
You clowns are a total joke. Honesty and Tech fan have never gone together in the same sentence.
LOL!!!! Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah!!! Same crap that comes out of you typical UGA fan’s mouth. Always thinking your team is the best, and etc. It’s easy to be a UGA fan. Just go to Wal-Mart and purchase any UGA merchandise, or put a G on your car. Your team is a joke in the SEC East, and dosen’t even compare to the talent the SEC has. At the beginning of the season your fans were ready to give up on your team, and give up on your coach. (This is the same crap every year) And, now its back on the band wagon. It’s the same typical band wagon crap!!!!

To be honest I don’t begrudge a college kid smoking a little weed now and then. Just not if your a football player and you signed a scholarship that undoubtedly had a clause in it strictly forbidding the smoking of said herb. I’m not sure if any schools scholarship precludes one from enjoying the company of a woman. Maybe not in his dorm or hotel room.
I’m not going to be hypocritical here. I’ve smoked weed and I’ve drank alcohol. I don’t drink anymore for medical reasons and because I don’t enjoy the after effects. However, during treatments for cancer I was encouraged by my doctor to take back up the wildwood weed and I credit it with helping me through a very stressful time.

This little drama is obviously not on the same level or same universe as the Penn State scandal. Nonetheless, the reaction of the GT faithful on here underscores how a culture of deniability can exist among blind loyalist who are unable or unwilling to be self aware and engage in critical thinking. Something that should be universally accepted as poor taste is rationalized and dismissed with responses like “I can’t for the life of me understand what is wrong with what he said?” There is no doubt that UGA fans would be reacting the same way if the situation were reversed. However, the mythology that Tech was somehow above this type of thing and is a bastion of enlightenment is once again shattered.

If you don’t have kids yet, the chances of your having an autistic kid are 1 out of 110. The kids are challenged mentally, and socially as well. Bullying by other kids at school often brings them home in tears, and there is now real way to explain to them why it happens and why they are different.
I simply ask everyone reading this blog and the comments to think about what it would be like to greet a child every day as he comes home from school every day riding the “short bus” and trying to help untangle his mind from from the experiences of the day at school. These people are not hidden away in institutions anymore. You may meet one who is earning a living by working as a bagger at Kroger or Publix, two companies who provide support and their resources in trying to help provide a meaningful existence for autistic kids and adults.
What Johnson said can’t be excused, retracted, glossed over or forgotten. It can only be realized as a mistake and tucked away in those places where we store experiences that we don’t want to repeat. I have a few of those, and some have visited my consciousness frequently to remind me of how I am not going to make those mistakes again.
If you need to joke about someone, think before you assign a label. Is there oversensitivity in society? Yes, but it seems there is not enough sensitivity to things that are really important.

Wow, another story blown out of context. I am a UGA grad and I certainly don’t “approve” of Paul Johnson’s comments or disparaging the mentailly handicapped; however, at the end of the day, we are again on the taking the politically correct thing to a new level. He used a bad choice of words, he issued an apology, end of story. The UGA fan deserved all he got as he instigated it. We will continue to make fun of Tech’s latent crime campus, their lack of attractive women, their empty stadium. They will continue to make fun of us for the dope smoking, driving record of our players, and perceived lack of education (which is silly but I get the fun in it).

Granted, the police tend to look the other way if you are drinking out of a Solo cup on gamedays, but believe me, the fuzz will issue a possession of alcohol ticket in a New York second.

Read what Ken posted late last night about CPJ visiting a UofMd player in the hospital in Atlanta and even giving him his phone number to call if he needed anything. Different people do different things to prove or disprove their class. I don’t think CMR’s chewing out a reporter before the season showed much class either, and I believe he has even used a 4-letter word in public on occasion (GASP!!!), but neither of those diminish the overall class he has. The fact that CPJ is outspoken and sometimes says something that he might have been better off not saying in no way indicates that he has no class. His unrequired and unsolicited visit to that MD player speaks volumes about his class in my opinion. YES, I would be proud for him to be an example to a son of mine.

It is bloggers like GTBob that can only spew vile and regurgitate the same nauseating facts over and over again that make me sick to my stomach on the fact that their life seems to surround the success or failure of UGA football and its players.
And yes, I realize that both sides deal with idiots of this caliber. Outside of that, I can’t stop laughing at these blog names and comments when making fun of each school. I simply love rivalry week and hope that we whoop ya by 21.

Texas and A&M are stopping (in theory) as they are both childish about A&M leaving. A&M is taking the attitude that they are now superior to Texas for joining the SEC and they no longer need them. Texas is just being Texas…meaning they have their own TV network and they are the Notre Dame of the South.
Outside of the politics, I think the rivalry will renew at some point down the road when cooler head prevail.

Waiting on a reply from headley regarding his continual usage of Reuben Houston being reinstated to the Tech football team. But he is a coward who will disappear now that he has had his fun and been called out. Gutless coward comes on these blogs, slings his same old tired Tech filled hate opinions as fact and then slinks off when confronted.
And to answer your question, if my son were 5, and I had 6 months to live, I would gladly accept either CPJ or CMR to raise him. Who I would not have raise him would be a gutless, coward like yourself, he would be better off going it on his own than to have the sort of values and morals that you exhibit here on a daily basis, not to mention your usage of questionable or no facts. I’d rather he grow up to be like eitehr coach rather than an angry, illogical rage filled loser. Correspondence school!!! Really!!! LMFAO. Supersize, were you around summer before last (2010) when, in the wake of all the pub UGA was getting on the way to the Fulmer Cup, he alleged that Tech had as many arrests, but that the APD was covering them up. Spent a whole afternoon asking him for any kind of proof, when he was not ignoring me, he would simply repost the same thing as fact. Chased him around 4 or 5 articles calling him out on that. @ ??????…..Well, I don’t remember that, but it definitely is his style. I made what was apparently a mistake on one of my posts more than year ago….a MISTAKE, mind you, and he still brings that up calling me a liar. What I said was that Dooley had voted against Tech’s re-entrance into the SEC back in the 80s, or whenever it was. He said that Dooley had NOT voted no, but had abstained. I don’t remember reading that he abstained, but even if he did, that was a mistake on my part, and not a lie. But even if he DID abstain on the vote, it served the same purpose as a NO vote, and when coupled with the no votes by the Mississippi schools, it kept Tech from rejoining the SEC.

There are many words that come to mind in describing Paul Johnson, the only one that fully descibes him now is ignorant. With a family member who is a special needs child (and his father a GA Tech graduate), I can only hope that Paul Johnson and his family are never affected by such. Hopefully, when his daughter is grown and starts a family, Paul Johnson won’t have to refer to his grandchild as a retard. He is without a doubt the most ignorant man on the planet. I don’t care what games Tech wins or loses from this point forward, I can assure you that as long as that man is the Coach, I will never attend another game. I am so glad that he is in his perfect world where only his thoughts and feelings matter.

From Georgia Sports Blog using the term “retarded”: (about Reuben Houston)
Doug said…
Let me make sure I’m crystal-clear on this. Darrius Swain gets nabbed three times over the course of two years for driving on a suspended license, and spends 45 days in jail. But Ruben Houston drives around with a pot stash weighing as much as two small children, and gets . . . no jail time whatsoever?
Two words: completely retarded.
See this is in appropriate also, just move on. I work with a lot of special needs childern so I know of the challenges all parents have. CPJ was wrong, apologized. Move On.

How many DUI’s, violent behavior, etc have Dog players been arrested in the past 10-years? At least over 80-90 I’m sure of. I have a friend who had “special needs” and they would never refer to themselves as a retard. So to them, this is not an accurate description.
The actual word has 2 definitions:
a. a mentally retarded person.
b.a person who is stupid, obtuse, or ineffective in some way:
It is clear that CPJ was clearly using the “b” definition for the obtuse barker on the call and anyone who is riding the “politically correct” high horse is retarded in the “b” sense of the word.
Did you know that the word Dumb could offend someone that can’t speak better be careful as that has been used by Mark Richt about 50x this season…..geesh all the Politically Correct liberals should be ashamed…
