Greetings-
Some post-practice notes. Nothing of great substance, unfortunately, although a number of players were held out. I wouldn’t worry about it unless it continues Tuesday.
1. Monday, Georgia tight end Orson Charles was named a finalist for the John Mackey Award, given to the nation’s premier tight end.
No one on the Georgia Tech coaching staff is ready to challenge the honor.
“He’s a tremendous athlete,” secondary coach Charles Kelly said. “He’s got really good size, he runs like a wide receiver, adjusts to the ball well. They can put him in position where he creates mismatches at times.”
Tech has had its share of challenges defending tight ends. Saturday, Duke tight end Cooper Helfet caught six balls for 45 yards, including a pair of touchdowns. Against Virginia Tech, Chris Drager had a 14-yard touchdown catch. Charles, 6-foot-3 and 241 pounds, leads the Bulldogs with 35 catches, with five touchdowns and a 12.4 yards-per-catch average.
“He makes catches that wide receivers would like to make,” defensive coordinator Al Groh said.
Tech faced another finalist, Clemson’s Dwayne Allen, earlier this season. Hobbled by a turf-toe injury, Allen caught four passes for 32 yards.
(Tech has played a number of excellent tight ends this season, starting with Charles and Allen. Helfet, N.C. State’s George Bryan, Kansas’ Tim Biere, Maryland’s Matt Furstenburg and Virginia’s Colter Phillips all were on either the preseason or midseason Mackey Award watch list.)
2. Georgia Tech is a 6-point underdog to Georgia and has lost nine of its last 10 to the Bulldogs. After practice Monday, Tech coach Paul Johnson sarcastically played the woe-is-us card.
“They’ve got a heck of a team,” Johnson said. “Won nine in a row, SEC East champs. Hopefully we can stay with them.”
Johnson interrupted a question about his players not needing much motivation this week by saying they are “probably scared.”
And why would that be?
Said Johnson, “We haven’t beaten them in a long time.”
(Johnson said this all deadpan and was obviously being sarcastic. I don’t know what exactly to read into it, but I’d say he’s not dreading the game’s outcome like some Tech fans seem to be.)
3. Several players were held out of practice Monday, including wide receiver Stephen Hill, A-backs Orwin Smith and Roddy Jones, cornerback Louis Young and center Jay Finch. Johnson said the team is “pretty beat up” but did not seem overly concerned about their availability for Saturday. Young, for one, said he expected to play Saturday.
Johnson said B-back Preston Lyons, who missed Saturday’s game against Duke to rest injuries, should play Saturday. Johnson wasn’t sure if Charles Perkins, who played in Lyons’ place, would also get snaps.
“We’ll see how practice goes,” Johnson said.
(I wouldn’t be worried unless the same players are all held out Tuesday. I think saying players are “beat up” sounds like they just need a breather.)
4. As is always the case, Johnson also reviewed officials calls and non-calls in addition to his team’s performance. Often, he has conceded that officials made the right calls on plays he argued during the game.
Asked about calls made Saturday, Johnson replied, “I’m not getting into that one. I need to keep my cash.”
(I thought the pass-interference penalty against Jemea Thomas was pretty questionable.)
5. Tech will have classes through Wednesday, and Johnson will follow a normal practice schedule through that day. On Thanksgiving, the team will practice in the morning, have lunch together and then players will be released until Friday. … Coaches named wide receiver Tyler Melton, linebackers Brandon Watts and Jemea Thomas the offensive, defensive and special teams players of the game.
(Melton is turning it on in his last few games. He has seven catches in his three games, and I think I read one of his catches against Duke was an ESPN top 10 selection.)
Thanks for reading. Again, let’s keep things clean.

The defense will have to blitz a lot and the secondary will have to play great man defense. I’m not entirely hopeful since UGA has a strong, balanced offense. I just hope that their defense isn’t any better than it has been the last couple of seasons, but it looks like they have made a lot of progress in the second year of the 3-4, more than we have. Tech will need to bring some energy to the offense, stick their blocks, give Tevin time to throw and make their catches and no turn the ball over like last season. Missed opportunities will kill us.

It’d be nice if we could slow down one aspect of their offense, CT_Jacket. My expectation is that they are going to line up and run right at us, though. We’ll see if we can stop ‘em.

We’ll see, gt40. We actually have played well against the run, but we must tackle when we get there. The mistakes we’ve made have not been that we weren’t there. It’s been that we haven’t gotten them to the ground. That needs to change. Like now.

Charles is a complete player as he can block and has great hands but what about, Mitchell, Brown, King, Conley, Bennett, Wooten and maybe Branden Smith and Boykin thrown in here and there.
Nine interchangeable big time playmakers to consider any time they line up.
Everyone take a moment to look around and reflect on all that you can be thankful for on this upcoming Thanksgiving.
Good luck GT, hoping for a good, clean, injury free game and may the best team win (on this given Saturday).

we have always had issues covering the TE, even (especially) with TENUTA BLITZ! Our best defense has been “hope he drops the ball”. My guess is that dawgs keep him in to block to help pound it down our throats with that 330 lb. offensive line, then sneak him down the seam when the safeties have to come up to help stop the run.
The offense better be crisp.

Agreed, DILLIGAF. I think Wooten is hurt, no?
The biggest vertical threat is Mitchell. We’ll be exposed somewhere because we can’t go man to man on OC and live to tell about it but we can’t devote four guys to shutting down OC or Mitchell and leave man to man everywhere else. Plus, I expect the pressure will come from the secondary.

Refering to the “Business Trip” idea Coach Johnson used for the Duke game:
Two questions –
Why isn’t EVERY game thought of by the coaches and players as a “BUSINESS TRIP”???
And – What part of – “It’s important to get up mentally for EVERY game” – don’t they understand?
That’s traditionally been part of the problem with this team – they play inconsistantly and it’s blamed on youth or being tired from not having a break instead of understanding the importance of the MENTAL aspect of being prepared for EVERY game, You can’t coach a player to play with his heart – to give his best on every play – to play error free ball and avoid critical mistakes of judgement that produce penalties – to give that second effort every down. No – no one is perfect but all they have to do is look back to how we played Clemson VS the teams who beat us to tell what the difference was in each of those games. Those teams were not better than Tech – they came ready to play and we weren’t. How many Tech fans – other than myself – wonder from week to week which Tech team will show up?? They obviously always bring the physical skills to the game – what I want to know is when will they always bring the mental attitude? Hopefully, Tech will show up with both physical and mental toughness and play the best they have all year!! GO TECH!!!!

I just think Grantham will have these guys ready to play and our linebackers are so big and so fast you’ll have a hard time running around the corner..and the FB dive won’t work either because of our BEEF in the middle with Jenkins & Geathers.

During the Clemson game we tackled around their legs and ankles. Against Va and Miami, we tried to tackle high. Hope we recognize and wrap them up. Seems like OC has given us fits in the past. It is like we think the tight end can’t catch the ball or they won’t throw to him. He is a stud and will be tough to cover, especially with Mitchell out there as well.
Hopefully both Melton, and Hill can make some good catches and Tev will be able to make decent throws, please no more punt looking passes. O line has to give him time.
D line has to put pressure on Murray and force him into mistakes. Kid can run and has to be hemmed in and pressured. Hopefully Barnes will get some playing time and be able to help stuff the middle.
This will be our toughest game this year so far, guys better be ready to butt heads.

I’m sorry gt40 but I have to disagree with what you’ve said. I believe that the heat was at boiling level when this season opened and then at a fever pitch after the first two losses but Mark Richt is responsible for saving his job. He made the necessary adjustments in his staff, hired a competent DC, a very good secondary coach and a hungry offensive line coach. His staff brought in a stellar recruiting class and he’s playing some freshman that are playmakers.
Richt is the #3 active, FBS coach in the country of coaches with over 100 wins. I’ve been disappointed over the years but I’ve always believed that he’s earned the chance to make the right decisions and I can’t say that I’m really surprised that he has won the last nine games.

I don’t even know why UGA would bother practicing this week. All they need to do is show up and they are guaranteed a victory. I mean have you seen their helmets? That G looks just like the Packers – hello, the Packers are undefeated. There is also the matter of 9 straight wins including victories over every single team in the SEC that is not named Alabama, LSU, or Arkansas. If I were them I would just use the time to plan their SEC championship celebration. After all everyone knows that the loss to Boise State was 100% the fault of the uniforms and those close games with Tenn., Vandy, Florida, and Kentucky were just warm ups for the beat down they threw on Auburn.
The only way UGA loses to GT is if they have an inflated ranking fueled by a weak schedule against a conference that is living off a pair of elite teams. I mean it cannot be possible that UGA lost to the only good teams it played this season, can it? They beat Auburn, right? What’s that? Auburn needed a once in a decade rally in the last three minutes to beat Utah State – at home? Check please.

Oh yeah that’s another thing 5150 brought up. Good point. Jenkins will almost certainly demand a double team. That’ll be two guys on one, well there’s only 5 linemen on the O-line…that’ll leave 3 to block 2 ends and 4 linebackers. Doesn’t look good. These guys are on a mission. Last season DeAngelo Tyson didn’t demand a double team. He’s only 6′2, 306…”only” lol, that’s big…but Jenkins is an animal…he’s 6′4, about 340….so he needs to be double teamed.

I agree Chris…our defense has much more discipline under Grantham than they had under Martinez. No more personal foul penalties…very few penalties on the defense at all. No facemasks, no pass interference, etc. Just solid tackling and coverage. That’s what makes a defense great.

Jenkins will grab Roddy and slam him like he did that guy from Mississippi State. We’ve had success against gimmick run offenses. Like Auburn’s and Mississippi State’s, and even Florida’s. But GT is unique in their triple-option. Roddy Jones will try to stretch it outside, but there’s Jarvis Jones, and he’ll cut it back only to see Gilliard or Jenkins right there waiting on him.

“I hope Tech doesn’t chop our D-line. Those are illegal. Those cause fights.” Tech has been called for 1 chop block (1st offensive series against VT) in the last 2 games. Tech will most certainly cut block the O-line, LBs and anyone else on the perimeter.Nothing illegal about it. LSU occasionally cut blocks on passing plays. Their guard and tackle went right for the shins against Auburn’s DT and DE at the snap and they went down like trees at the line of scrimmage.

There are certainly some interesting posts on this blog. I haven’t read so much confidence from UGA fans heading into a game since right before the Boise State game. And Big John Jenkins (I believe it is mandatory to use the adjective Big before his name) seems to be a cross between Ndamukong Suh and Warren Sapp. Jenkins is so good that he backs up Gathers.

The One play I think can make HUGE gains is the pass to the B-back in the middle of the field. The PROBLEM is Tevin’s tendency to FLOAT that pass. If he puts some ZIp on it just oget the DB or OLB’s head it can be a HUGE gainer or TD. If Tevin Floats it Rambo will Pick 6 it.

Georgia is a top 5 defense. UGA is best at stopping the run and if gt want’s to slip a pass every now and again it’s getting picked by boykin, rambo, or smith. I heard one of you say gt is good at stopping the run……….hahaha! I looked up their stats and they are middle of the pack at stopping the pass and way, way, way down there at stopping the run. Crowell and thomas are playing by the way and they got 300 rushing yards vs. auburn. You think tech has a better defense than auburn? I think not. Our receivers are better, our backs are better, our qb is better, our te’s are better, our lines are bigger and our defense is better. This week has built up all season and it is finally here. Now let’s roll JACKETS!!!!!!!!
UGA I have to admit is playing nice football after the terrible start but as far as there defense, is it really that good or is alot to do with the competition they have played. It is not like they have actually lit it up with offensive competition and my point to this is the best offense they have played is ranked #30.
BSU – 30
USC – 78
MS – 87
OM – 114
NMS – 40
UF – 92
UT – 97
Aub. – 93
UK – 117
Vandy – 100
CC – Div 1AA did not even make the playoffs.
GT – 14
I am saying this just to say that UGAG did not actually play top ranked offenses so the defensive numbers are quite gaudy by the competition. So let’s hear it DAWG fans as far as whom we as GT played and yes the offenses played by the Jackets ranking wise are much better then what you faced. I am not saying TECH will win but the facts do not lie as far as the competition.

I am in agreement with Old timer. The more CPJ is here the more I worry about the future of this team.
We are 1-3 vs VT, 1-3 vs Miami, 1-(soon to be)3 vs UGA & 0-3 in bowls. In 3 bowl games, this offense has scored a total of 17 points. Unacceptable. If we loose the next two games, are we gonna keep CPJ around forever?

@ GTJeff, Who in the world do you think will come coach Tech if CPJ is fired??
Wins of 9, 11, 6, with 8 and counting this year….what is your expectation level?
You have been in the hunt for the Coastal three out of four years, played in the Orange Bowl in the ACC championship year, and have a chance at a 10 win season.
Your record against VT is frankly just a bit of bad luck. Miami has owned you since you ran them out of Bobby Dodd in ‘08, but that’s about the only team that has been lights out against CPJ.
We have certainly struggled to win our games against you…even in the “We run this state” game, you were driving at the end for the win.
If I were you, I would hope CPJ were staying for a long, long time.

Bankerdawg,
Im glad you got to it before I did. I hate our fanbase sometimes because they have HUGE expectations for no reason. We’ve had our best recruiting classes in a long time, and frankly, we weren’t supposed to win 7 games this season. People had us being lucky to win bowl games. He’s overlooking that we’ve been blown out once by Miami of those three years, were in the games with VT AND UGA until the very end. We are 3-1 against Clemson and really have been doing well in the ACC.
Let him coach and do his thing before people start talking. When he has another losing season (and some coaches have losing seasons – see 100 winner Mark Richt last year). We’d be fools to even talk about firing him.

Stood puzzling and puzzling: “How could it be so?
It hurts during practice! It hurts to my heel!
“It hurt during timeouts, and pregame drills!”
And he puzzled three hours, `til his puzzler was sore.
Then Crowell thought of something he hadn’t before!
“Maybe football,” he thought, “doesn’t come from the TV.
“Maybe football…perhaps…means a little bit more to me!”
And what happened then…?
Well…in Dawg-ville they say
That Crowell’s small heart
Grew three sizes that day!
And the minute his heart didn’t feel quite so tight,
He whizzed with his football through the afternoon light
And he brought back the touchdowns! And the yardage on Tech!

I think Johnson is a good football coach. But, unlike Richt, I think he’s arrogant…Which is fine, that’s probably how Tech likes it, but at .663% at Tech and no bowl bowl wins and one three point win over Georgia and the team on a 4 year probation under his watch, you would think he would be a little more humble? I think they need to get a little better in the rest of the front 3 but they are improving there from game to game and it has showed. Against Auburn, he looked like Joe Montana throwing pin point passes and 4 TD’s in the first half( would of throw for 7 or 8, but Richt ran the ball the entire second half). Gonna be fun to watch the Georgia defense, because the last 3 games, bad teams or not ( AU had actually been rushing the ball well) the Dawgs have held those teams to like 50 yards rushing total combined, and Tech’s bread and butter is running the ball. Should be a good match up.

All the pressure is on UGA. If they fumble or stumble, a loss to GT would be humiliating and a thorn in the UGA side that Tech fans will enjoy for a year. I don’t know who for UGA will show up. If Tech doesn’t turn it over, they have a great chance. The turnovers will decide this game. The teams both have outstanding athletes, UGA more, but many many nullified by the tricky spread offense.

I don’t think the spread offense nullifies the athletes UGA has on defense. I think it just gives them a different dimension to prepare for. One of the big keys is I have noticed that when Tevin is rolling and it’s a pass play, several teams have given up the long ball (when Tevin gets it to the WR), because safeties have bitten on the run. As great as I think Bacarri Rambo is at times and certainly can be as he gets better, he will bite on plays looking like run.

the most impressive I`ve seen Tech this year was when they destroyed Clemson, and Clemson has a pretty balanced offense with a couple big play receivers and a good TE, although he was hobbled that game. the matchup is intriguing this year because Ga is so much stronger against the run, thus strength vs strength. Boise is a great team, and well coached, what they lack in athleticism they make up for by very sound fundamentals, and Moore`s accuracy and quick reads for the short game to negate any pressure was effective all night. Different Ga defense now, more experienced, healthy and confidant. GA would play them closer now. Jenkins is all that was advertised and Geathers has moments when he`s a bulldozer, so of course they must be accounted for and neutralized or the inside run doesn`t exist. The LBs are deep, fast, and if they play disciplined they can be effective. Noone will bottle Tech up all day, they will get their yards and some big plays against anybody including Bama or LSU. Ga So put up 21 in Tuscaloosa, and it could have been 10 points closer. To me, it comes down to execution by both teams Sat, should be fun to watch!

Ah Clean Old Fashion Hate Week! I love it and I am so looking forward to the game on Saturday. It’s going to be, as usual, a knock down, drag out slobbeknocker. The winner is going to enjoy it for the next 364 days while the loser is going to suffer while waiting for the next game! I don’t pretend to know which team is going to win but I do know neither side will have a problem getting up for the game. Both teams have their strengths and weaknesses that can be exploited by the other. If both teams play their best I fear GA will come out on top but if GA is a bit off their game and Tech comes out flying there is no doubt in my mind that Tech can win. That’s one of the things that makes this game so much fun!
On a side note we lost a great ambassador of college football this week and I, for one, realize the world of college football is lesser for that loss. CPJ is just using a little coach psychology–never give the other guys something for a motivational speech, and if you praise them enough, maybe they will start believing it and let down. A little humility always helps, and it doesn’t let expectations run away, either. I think CPJ is pretty smart.

Cupcake = Headley, you are one of the worst offenders on here, and you pick on UOAD??? So what if he calls it like it is sometimes. It’s only because jerks like you bring out the worst in all of us. So why are you posting under one of your many aliases? Do you seriously think everybody in here doesn’t know who you are? At least be man enough to choose ONE name and STICK WITH IT.

Ya know Diablo…..Georgia should take the week off and not practice. After beating Tech 8 out of the last 9 year; that might be the only chance Tech has. And remember a rivalry is only a rivalry if the other team wins every now and then. And be honest with you this series is getting prettying boring to Dawg fans. Gorilla, I read and post on Bradley’s and Schultz’s blogs, but I have NEVER EVEN READ a UGA blog. I have no interest in anything that is written there, or in anything any posters might have to say. Can GT’s PROBATION be extended for illegal chop blocks? Wouldn’t that be funny, SEC officials actually calling GT for all the illegal chop blocks and the NCAA adding to to PROBATION period. What is it up to now? 4 years? Does GT still bring the 2009 ACC Championship trophy to the game or is it still locked up in a closet.

CPJ IS on the hot seat. The Tech Fund boys are calling him and have been calling him with votes of confidence. Yeah, sure. He needs to win vs UGA.
The good news for CPJ is that win or lose vs UGA, his boys will be in at least the Outback Bowl or the Capitol One Bowl or the Chic Fil A Bowl or the Fiesta.Right? ACC is tops, right???
Wrong ……………………..lose and maybe GT gets no bowl. Win vs UGA and maybe GT lands the John Belk Bowl in Charlotte, NC.
These facts are the major reason that ACC is small ball. Their teams simply have no traction with USA’s MAJOR TV markets. End of story. Said too for foolish GT fans.

GT fans love to mention Jan Kemp and UGA. Fine. No probation, no reduction of scholarships, no TV black outs, no bans from bowl games, nor ANY SANCTIONS resulted and in fact, her law suit was settled in the appelate process and she received maybe $275,000 less her face lift fees and her lawyer’s fees and she ended up with $29.75 and it went d own hill from there. Even her female “friend” left her.
GT on the other hand in the last 7 or 8 or 9 years has been CONVICTED TWICE OF NCAA VIOLATIONS FOR SYSTEMIC CHEATING. How do I know this? AJC And the fact that GT’s AD RAD was begging the NCAA to allow GT to put that now defamed 2009 ACC trophy back up in the Edge building in the limelight.
GT is on proby now and their lore is sullied once again for getting kids in the school to learn Cement Mixing 101 and Post hole Digging 225. Disgraceful this is to my GT pals from the classes of 70,71, 72. They will agree this this is horrible.
Now go chew some bird and get ready for Conley and Crowell and Brown and Bennett and Mitchell and Figgins. UGA’s D is not the same D personel as last year. Do not confuse our D line this year with any UGA lines in the recent past. You will see.

NEVER did I or any of my MD or Attorney or Pharamacist or Vet or Business School buds work for a GT grad. Now, the GT grads that I know ……………I grew up with in Atlanta and they for the most part worked for old Western Electric or Ga Power and Atl Gas and old Southern Bell, ATT,etc. THEY were the “employees” and I and my friends were the employers BUT ON an international scale, as far as I personally was concerned …………..now nicely retired.
