TEVIN WASHINGTON
On passes being open against 9-man front:
We had put it on the check. The pass I threw to Embry (Peeples), we had put in a check for that because last year when we played them, we saw how they were lining the safeties really wide and they were leaving the middle of the field wide open. We wanted to take advantage of that.
On responding to coach Paul Johnson’s challenge to take care of business:
I think we responded well. At times, it wasn’t always perfect, it wasn’t always a good at times, but the end result is we finished out strong and got the win. We got the result we came here for.
It’s like that every week but this week, there was more emphasis on taking care of business. We worked too hard all year, all offseason, to come here and not take care of business, not finish the way we want to.
On the first-down run to run out the clock:
Coach (Paul) Johnson just told me to get the first down. He was like, the sprint-out, there shouldn’t be anybody out there. You should be able to just sprint around the edge and get the first down.
On receivers making adjustments to make catches:
When they make an adjustment, it gets your confidence up. Guys go out there, make a play for you, you go out there and try to make a play for them.
EMBRY PEEPLES
On not having Orwin Smith:
It was a little different, because you normally have that power at that position that we usually get from Big O. We still just have to come out here and play the same like he was there.
On his race to the pilon for his touchdown run:
It was a little closer than I thought. I was thinking Roddy (Jones) was going to get the safety down and he kind of chipped him and he kind of stayed on his feet and stumbled up. It made it a little more difficult, but the end result is I got there. That’s all that matters.
JEREMIAH ATTAOCHU
On if it was difficult to get into the flow of the game after halftime:
Not really. I mean, football is what we do. We step on the field, it’s time to go. It doesn’t take long to go. Mentally, I was ready to go and physically, I felt like I was ready to go in, too. So I just went in relaxed. I didn’t try to be a savior or anything. l just went in to play my role on defense.
On the penalties extending drives:
That’s definitely a concern. The funny thing about it is, it’s an easy thing to fix. We know exactly what’s wrong. That’s an easy problem to fix. We’re definitely going to fix it, be more disciplined.
STEVEN SYLVESTER
On Georgia:
We definitely want to go out on a good note. Georgia’s had our number the past couple years. They just keep rebuilding and reloading. Georgia’s always going to be a good football team, so we’re going to have to really be on our game when it comes to next Saturday.
DUKE NOSE TACKLE CHARLIE HATCHER
Being one of the defensive tackles, we came out wanting to stop the dives, and they were able to get some yards on dives on occasion, and we can’t let that happen. Then there were some pass plays and some outside running plays. You have to stop those big plays from happening by holding them to under three yards. We were able to do that on a lot of drives, but not every one of them, so it kind of hurt us.

Dallas Jacket…Go where, Paulding County? I think Al Groh is a good coach. What do you think about the position coaches? Do you think they could work more with fundamentals?

Ken…have you asked Coach Johnson or Coach Groh about working on the defense not getting out of position and trying to make arm tackles?

Glad we pulled out the Duke win, but our defense is going to have to step it up in a major way if we are going to have a chance against UGA. I’m afraid they are going to pass all over the field and make for a long day. However, if our guys play like they did the Clemson game, we do have a chance.
Congrats to UGA for pulling out a good season after a rough start. Their schedule made that possible, but you also have to play and win even the easy games. Glad I’m going to be gone most of the week so don’t have to listen to their comments – many of which are why I did not become a Dawg fan after moving here. For them to think so lowly of Tech, they sure do worry about us constantly.

I agree with Dad. We’ve got to play our very best game to have a good chance. By the way, I see from the stats sheet that we started four defensive linemen. Is that a permanent change?

It should be a great game. As evident by the NCSU-Clem game—attitude and a few breaks can dramatically turn a game. Neither Tech nor UGA has been consistent all year and which team shows up and what game plan is implemented will determine the outcome. UGA like UVA has a huge O-Line and should be able to run and we cannot stop the short pass or passes over the middle. UGA is not very disciplined and Tech’s O should chew up yards especially up the middle where the 3-4 is vulnerable. For some reason, Tech doesn’t seem to have any short pass plays in the playbook (WHY???), but if we connect on the long pass a few times, then the game will be close. A win for Tech would be a nice finish to an overachieving season and inspire momentum for next year.

yeller bug…the Yellow Jackets have had some success with wide receiver screens. Coach Johnson will run inside to make the outside vulnerable to the option. He will throw deep to get the safeties and corners to back off to reestablish the run offense. Not saying he’s any smarter than any other coach, but he plays a chess match I enjoy watching.

HighTech. I agree—if the safeties come up, then try to burn them long and a short in such instances would be throwing into traffic. We do throw the quick out to the wide receiver and we should do it more often especially on 1st down since the corners are often 6 – 10 yds off the LOS. We all arm-chair QB (main purpose of blogs) and I really like CPJ, but our play calling still seems “conservative”. We’ve run one shuttle pass all year. We have crossing routes to A-backs which is a harder pass to complete than play action and hitting an A-back on a 6 or 8 yd curl route which is basically throwing to a stationary target (higher % pass play). I’ve yet to see us run something like this which is a staple of Oregon and Boise State. We can have a run and shoot offense—just the QB is under center and we put pressure on the D for the quick dive play. After that fake, we can run, pitch or throw and implementing some quick throws off the fake dive would add another weapon in our arsenal.

yeller bug…are shorter routes being run on the long passes down field? What I’m asking is, are the short route receivers open but Tevin chooses to throw it down field because the long pass is open? I haven’t seen too many curl routes, but the B-Back wheel route was a nice play for Charles Perkins.

Based on writing styles, there are only about 2 trolls on this blog. They just keep changing their names.
Also, based on writing styles, one of them lives in his mother’s basement (lower-class troll) and the other loves in his mom’s trailer (parolee troll).
Neither of them could find either Athens or Atlanta on a map.

HighTech: There may be some short routes being run and perhaps they’re not open. TW seems to look at his primary receiver the whole way. My larger point is a set of plays that fake the dive, do a quick 1 or 2 step drop and throw a quick pass to an A back. Even our play action passes, TW does a 4 step drop. CPJ knows what he’s doing. Maybe these type of plays will become available when Vad Lee gets in the mix.

Did NC State crush Clemson yesterday because the Wolfpack are three touchdowns better? Did the game matter to Clemson. Win or lose they were headed to Charlotte so why not rest some starters and try a few new schemes. When you think about it why should UGA care much about next week’s game against us. They are going to Atlanta win or lose and then somebody, Arkansas or LSU is going to beat their brains out. I would like to believe we could beat a UGA squad that has nothing but in State pride to play for but I am not optimistic. This defense couldn’t stop an incontinent grandmother running for the bathroom. I think you actually have to work to be this inept. Our defense, especially on third downs is unwatchable. Ugh. PROBATION Nation, Tech’s probation is a paper probation only, meant apparently to soothe some NCAA official’s ego. There are no scholarship limitations, no TV limitations, no eligibility limitations, no bowl limitations. The probation is a total farce, based on absolutely nothing than some NCAA official got his feelings hurt because he didn’t get his way.

Alabama Jack – have you ever heard the term “the pot calling the kettle black”?
Not much of a smack talker… I’ve seen Tech teams not as talented as UGA pull off upsets. I do however believe that this is a big one for CPJ – big difference being 2-2 instead of 1-3 against your arch rival.

Georgia Tech’s 2009 All Crap Conference title resides in Athens because we clowned them on their own turf only a week before. It was their biggest season in nearly two decades and they were still big fat losers to the Dawgs. You don’t get any more owned than that.
