O. Smith ‘probably out’ for Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech A-back Orwin Smith looks like a no-go for Saturday’s game against Duke. After Tuesday’s practice, coach Paul Johnson said that Smith is “probably out. We’ll make a final decision [Wednesday].”

Smith did not practice again after sustaining an injury in the Virginia Tech game last Thursday. Smith is one of the Yellow Jackets’ most explosive players, averaging 10.8 yards per carry and 23.8 yards per reception. Embry Peeples would likely start in his place.

Johnson also said that B-back Charles Perkins will get snaps with the offense against Duke. Perkins has played on special teams this season but has not had a carry at B-back since the fifth game of the season. Asked if he’ll be used with B-backs David Sims and Preston Lyons, Johnson said, “I don’t know how many we’ll play, but I know Charles is going to play.”

We’d better use the game to get ready for a killer with UGA. They are loaded and ready to really put it to us.

shorter passes ( long is ok also)

Tech “D” will face a barrage of passes….40 to 50. Hope Tech will pick a few…

Anybody know what the injury is? Undisclosed as usual? I did not notice him looking injured in the game but did notice he struggled trying to secure the ball on KO’s and passes. He is our best running threat and for the most part in the passing game. Hate hearing the news we need our A game for Duke.

Hopefully Orwin will be ok. Interesting comment about Perkins. I think most of us thought he would win the starting BB spot and last I heard he had ball control issues and now CPJ wants to find a way to get him involved. Hopefully that means the kid has been practicing hard and fixing the short comings in his game.
Hope the D can get back to pressuring like they did in the Clemson and second half of the Miami game.

“D” backs looked like they were out of position the whole VT game. Let’s hope the “D” is fired up for this game.

Guess who the Duke qb is, who really would like to beat Tech. Motivation can be a mighty factor in a game. Remember when Roof’s Duke team upset the Jackets a few years ago.

Nesbitt called up

The Bills also filled the roster opening left by Eric Wood’s move to I-R by elevating defensive back Josh Nesbitt from the team’s practice squad. Nesbitt (6’1” 215), a former college quarterback at Georgia Tech, was an undrafted rookie signed by Buffalo this summer.

The former option quarterback began training camp as a signal caller before switching over to the defensive side of the ball where he’s lined up as a safety. Nesbitt now gives Buffalo five safeties on their active roster.

I’ve been saying all along that we need to get Perk some snaps, and meaningful carries. He’s played on ST, but hasn’t had a “Meaningful” carry all year. Lets see what he can do when it really matters.

Great news for Josh, bad news for Orwin and Tech.

Duke isn’t quite the pushover they used to be, but they’re pretty close. We should win this one walking.

Get ready for Georgie and the bowl game.

I will ask one simple question, then I will shut up. Who are these people who get so much pleasure by making anonymous comments on another’s blog? I really can’t see why anyone would get such a sigh of that. It makes you wonder what else they have going on in their lives.

Some have noted that B-back production is down, but no one is talking about one of the principal reasons why: Tech simply isn’t running the true triple option very much. Most of the carries the B guys are getting are on called dive plays. I watch the games again on video tape (yes, I’m old) and it’s not difficult to spot: if Tech doesn’t leave a defensive lineman unblocked (where Washington has to make a split-second give-or-keep read) then it’s a dive. The only idea I have (and certainly no one in the know will say this) is that Washington isn’t up to making the first read correctly enough of the time. So Johnson calls the dive, the QB follow, the counter option, the quick pitch.

The point is, BG, we don’t know how its going to be in the next game, regardless of who is playing whom. But to rule out completely, before the fact, is foolish and based on nothing but bias and I guess hatred for the opposing team. Kind of like UGa playing South Carolina. The Dawgs have much better players than does USC. But guess who won the game. And, I might add, I said after that game that Georgia will not lose another game. They are, no doubt, loaded.
