Georgia Tech B-back production

Greetings-

Hope you are well. Had a couple notes for you and hopefully I’ll be able to find something somebody has written about Duke’s football team.

1. I’m working on a story probably for Saturday about the lack of production at B-back.  Through 10 games, David Sims and Preston Lyons have a combined 794 yards, roughly putting them on a 13-game pace for about 1,030 yards.

In their seasons at B-back, Jonathan Dwyer and Anthony Allen were in the 1,300-yard range and that has been the case for B-backs almost annually for Paul Johnson’s offense going back to Navy and Georgia Southern.

Said co-offensive line coach Mike Sewak, a longtime Johnson aide, “This is the first time it’s ever been like this.”

Yr.    Player         AttPG    YPC      YPG

2008    Dwyer     15.4     7.0       107.3

2009    Dwyer     16.8     5.9       99.6

2010    Allen       18.5     5.5       101.2

2011    Sims        11.0     5.4       59.6

2011    Lyons      4.2       5.2       22.0

The position has produced seven plays of 20-plus yards, and four of them were in the first three games of the season. Johnson said Tuesday that he plans to have the staff evaluate the position and try to reach some answers.

“It hasn’t been the production that we would have liked, but I don’t think it’s necessarily all the B-back,” he said. “I think that’s a function of a lot of things.”

Sims and Lyons don’t appear to be the home-run threats that Allen and Dwyer were, but I think it’s not quite that simple an answer. It could be the line or A-backs not getting blocks, the B-backs not running off of a block correctly or not breaking a tackle, or quarterback Tevin Washington giving on the triple option when he should keep (or vice versa) or play-calling or the opposing defense.  Some of it is opportunities.

“If it was a simple fix, it would be fixed,” Sewak said.

2. The sports information department sent out an e-mail Wednesday to media members with candidates for All-ACC. The list:

AB Orwin Smith

ILB Julian Burnett

G Omoregie Uzzi

G Will Jackson

C Jay Finch

OLB Jeremiah Attaochu

Also worth considering:

S Isaiah Johnson

WR Stephen Hill

I don’t have a vote – it’s the paper’s policy to not vote for awards like this – and frankly, I don’t mind. I haven’t seen enough games and players around the league to feel like I could vote with authority. That said, I’d feel pretty comfortable voting for Smith, Burnett and Uzzi. Attaochu would be a more worthy candidate had he not missed two games to injury.

What do you think?

3. Lastly, I got an e-mail from a longtime Tech fan who needs your help.

My family has been attending GT home games since the Dodd era, as my grandfather did not miss but a few games when he was serving as a captain in the U.S. Army during WWII and my dad and I have followed his legacy by continuing to attend games. On Thursday night I met my dad at the game – we sit in the north stands, section 213, row 9. My father was wearing my grandfather’s family ring to the game, he remembers having it on his finger during the game, but when he got to his car after the game he noticed it had fallen off. I have sent an email to the GT police dept and put an ad in the classifieds on the AJC.

Here is the link(http://www.ajcexchange.com/category/66/subcategory/71/ad/28146 ).

If on the odd chance you found it, you know what to do.

After his team’s 31-21 loss to Virginia, Duke coach David Cutcliffe did not mince words with Virginia coach Mike London regarding Cavaliers cornerback Chase Minnifield.

Thanks. I’ll have practice notes up around 9:30 p.m.

Ken – what do you see happening with the B-back position in the next year? If i’m not mistaken, we’ll probably have the same personnel…

Ken, wonder why B-Back Perkins is not given more carries.
Last update on him was the Johnson was real pleased whith his practice, sense that update I don’t think he’s carried the ball.

I think issue is OL or fact thet Defense are all reading key to B-Back getting the ball. Also BBacks (Dwyer and AA) used to run sweeps which I have not seen much of this year.

a good question, and congratulations. the personnel will be the same. part of me thinks they’re not far off, but on the other hand it doesn’t seem to pass the eyeball test. a year’s experience for the line and backs should improve production. on the other hand, jonathan dwyer and the offensive line didn’t need experience for him to win acc player of the year in 2008.

I think Uzzi is our best shot at 1st team all ACC, then Burnett. Orwin will get some recognition but he really hasn’t had enough touches overall. By the way I have to wonder if his hand injury was affecting his play in the VT game. That was about as bad a game out of the big O as I’ve seen and not much has been made about his lack of impact on the game. As for Jeremiah, he’s deserving of recognition but unfortunately that bonehead (and certainly out of character) play may cost him.

Thanks Ken, hope you are well. Like you said ,it’s not just a quick answer. The defense determines Tevin’s response and that may be why he has to keep the ball rather than pitch. I still think developing a passing game is part of the solution. I laugh when I hear someone say that the TO is boring. Any play can go all the way. ” GO JACKETS “

Grand Chicago Jacket – yes, once football ends.
Fuzzy B – I’d agree Uzzi is the most likely candidate.
O’Keefe (from last blog) – B.J. Bostic redshirted after suffering an arm injury in the preseason.
CSRA Press (also from previous blog) – I requested Attaochu. As best I could tell, no media that normally cover Georgia were there.

BTTF – a good question. he did say he wanted to give Perkins a shot; perhaps that meant in a situation where Tech was safely ahead, which hasn’t happened lately. worth asking.

As for B back production, to a simpleton like me, it’s a sign that we don’t have enough beef up front more than anything else. These guys DO have the potential to mature and be better but most of our troubles started when defenders aggressively jump into our backfield and it would seemto me that the O line play has to step up so to make that strategy less effective.

lack of talent

November 16th, 2011
12:37 pm

The problem is the backs are not as talented as Dwyer and Allen. Both of these guys are in the NFL. We dont have a back on the team that will play in the NFL. Until Johnson realizes that this is not GSU or Navy and you have to recruit top talent on offense, we will continue to see the b back position be an area of concern. He said himself before the season that it really doesnt matter who is at b back, they will have 1000 yards. Maybe it is that attitude that has yet to land him a big recruit for the position. Simple as that

GT Joe I guess you have the philosophy of just continue to forgive regardless of the past actions of others- JA has no known issues from his past- if he were to continue and continue to get into trouble time and time again I would say you can label him in that as well i will be willing to say you want have another issue with him again- I think Mr. Crowell has already had separate issues on more than one occasion at UGA? IF I’m wrong my apologies- Superman you were that same kid that growing up always said “well Billy is doing it so why can’t I” and your mother’s response “well if Billy were going to jump off the bridge would you”? Do you justify everything you do with that logic?

@GT FAN IN PA “I think Mr. Crowell has already had separate issues on more than one occasion at UGA?”

Well, the conversation initially wasn’t involving Crowell. It was involving the punch that Kwame Geathers put on the Vandy center for trying to destroy his knee as a play was over. So in that regards, no, there were no prior incidents.

As for IC, he has had his share of issues to start his young, hopefully long, career. I hope the kid turns it around and matures, not necessarily for the team’s sake, but for his own future. There are plenty of examples of kids from any college getting there, letting their head get too big, becoming a bust as a result, and becoming a bust in life. Hope IC doesn’t travel that road at the end.

Tampa- will not disagree sir- I think the young man has a bright future if he stays out of trouble. My hope is that he does turn it around- I wish no ill feelings toward any of these young men. It is the young men who continue to want to go down the paths where it needs to be cut- I don’t blame Geathers for what he has done. Just sometimes hard to understand the logic of these so called fans of each university who spew out “well you do it on our blogs” on both sides as well-

As far as the UGA defense, just look at what Dyer and McCalebb have done to teams all year, and look at what the Dawg defense did to them. Dawgs held them to less than even LSU did. They have allowed only one QB, Tyler Bray (who many believe has many good days ahead of him) to pass for for over 250 yards (Bray had 251). This is the same Tyler Bray that threw for over 300 yards and 4 TDs against UNC last year.

The thing is, Tampa, the GT fans act like a bunch little kids. They cry and complain at the drop of a hat, spout off at how good their team is and how nobody can stop their vaunted offense, and best of all – when they lose to UGA they run thier mouths about how much better they are (perceived) academically… We may have our battles, but GT fans are pure trash.

GT JOE if that is your stance on how you look at logic then you have deeper issues than I thought- if you want to go down that road then go down- my point with IC he had issues prior to coming to UGA- it is a pattern- JA there is no pattern in his past that would say he does this- does that help you understand?

The touchdowns to Demaryius Thomas had to contribute to the success that Dwyer had. The production at the B-back position is something that should be evaluated after each game. I’m not sure why after 10 games CPJ says that he will have someone evaluate this. He’s been running the TO long enough to know why it’s not producing better results.
