Georgia Tech’s O. Smith may miss Duke game

Greetings-

Big news is A-back Orwin Smith was injured in the loss to Virginia Tech and may not play Saturday. Coach Paul Johnson made mention of the injury in response to a question about trying to get Smith more carries.

“Hard to get it to him when he’s over there with us (on the sideline),” Johnson said.

Johnson didn’t disclose the injury and said he didn’t think it was serious, “but if we had to play today, he probably couldn’t play.”

Johnson said Embry Peeples would likely start. Tony Zenon, Deon Hill and Robbie Godhigh might also get more snaps. In recent games, Roddy Jones, Peeples and Smith have been in a rotation. Monday, Johnson said, “I don’t think we’ve got any injuries for the next game. I mean, you’re always bumped and bruised after you come out of a game. We had a little extra time because it’s Thursday night, too.”

2. Linebackers Brandon Watts or Malcolm Munroe will likely start in place of Jeremiah Attaochu, Johnson said, depending on which package the defense starts out in. Attaochu will not play the first half of the Duke game as discipline for punching Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas in Thursday’s game.

3. With the goals of winning the ACC and going undefeated at home no longer possible, Johnson brought up to the team that only three Tech teams since 1956 have won 10 games. At 7-3, the Jackets can achieve that total by winning the final two regular-season games against Duke and Georgia and the bowl game. Playing for a better bowl is another motivation.

“If you want to keep position for a higher-pegged bowl game, then you need to win,” Johnson said.

4. Johnson on Duke: “I think Duke’s an improved team. They don’t have the wins to show for it, but I think they’re a better team than they were a year ago.”

5. With the B-back production not measuring up to the past standards with past Johnson teams, Johnson said coaches will look at the position and production from this season in the offseason and fully understand the nature of the lack of performance. He said he doesn’t think it’s necessarily the fault of B-backs David Sims and Preston Lyons.

“I haven’t seen any real gaping holes that they’ve failed had to run through,” he said.

Links

Kind of thin. Apparently, Duke’s basketball team has a game of some import Tuesday that’s drawing a lot of attention.

Game stories from Duke’s loss to Virginia, from the Duke Chronicle and the Raleigh News & Observer.

Duke offensive tackle Kyle Hill, who started all 46 games he’d played in since 2008, has sustained a season-ending shoulder injury against UVa, per the school’s website. Tough way to go out.

Buzz is 11-0 in the Capital One Mascot Challenge, thanks in no small part, if I recall correctly, to the Tech marching band’s trumpet section, and is taking on Mike the Tiger from LSU this week. Michelle Hiskey “interviewed” Buzz and put together a first-person (first-bee?) story for the AJC.

Thanks for reading. I’ll have post-practice notes up this evening.

“Playing for a better bowl is another motivation”.

If going for the ACC Championship wasn’t enough motivation before, then a better bowl sure isn’t going to provide much incentive.

And I sure do hate to say this, but I’m getting quite concerned about the manner in which Paul Johnson responds. He says words, but doesn’t say anything. Maybe the team is getting tired of it too.

Hard to hear that about Orwin; hope he’s recovered for Thanksgiving.

I think a friend of mine was trying to find people who tweet about Duke football, but for some reason, couldn’t find any.

Also, that’s funny to hear about the trumpet section; I guess they were really good about getting the word out!

It is amazing how public opinion on a coach often hinges on one play. Attachu had his moment, possibly cost Tech the game, and now Johnson can’t coach. If that Vandy kid picks up the blocked punt and runs it in for 6 then Richt may have been burned out of his home. Neither of these guys forgot how to coach. Damn, just let the season play out.

How soon everyone forgets that this was supposed to be a rebuilding year in which we would be happy with any bowl game. The recruiting is fine because of Vad Lee and it’ll be even better when/if we get Kallon. We have our QB in waiting, Owrin, Hill, and Sims will all be better next year. I have no complaints about the defense except for Attaochu caring too much. If he wants to do that to Aaron Murray I support it as long as he gets his hand inside the mask. It’s really funny how many trolls are on this Jacket blog, using monikers that sound like GA Tech fans, but are so obviously just the opposite. Paul Johnson has the third highest winning percentage in GA Tech history and isn’t going anywhere. He’s able to be successful with recruits that most so called super programs ignore, or look at when they lose out to other programs, or with players who know the value of getting a GA Tech education along with playing with a winning program.

With the second youngest team in the NCAA, the Yellow Jackets weren’t expected to win but 5 games this season, yet here they are, already Bowl eligible, with the possibility of winning 10 games if they can win their final 3 games. They are building towards the future and it looks bright.

It should be automatic to throw to that receiver EVERY time! Look I understand that the O-Line can make a whole for the QB draw or option….BUT IT FARGIN’ doesn’t DO THAT! After the Miami game I was really worried that we wouldn’t even be competitive against our tougher opponents and then came the Clemson upset. The penalty on #45 was boneheaded and could not have come at a worse time but such is life. You roll with the punches…literally sometimes.

s&b, the problems with our offense have little to do with the formation. The oline has been ineffective this year with pass and run. Moving the qb back a few yards won’t help. Also, open receivers should be getting the ball. CPJ isn’t telling qbs to ignore open men.

Good teams with good coaching overcome bad plays (ie Attouchu’s swing). Bottom line is that nobody can overcome poor coaching and that is what I see on the field! Both offensively (missed assingments, no pass blocking, no run blocking, no quality QB play, no quality RB(b back) play….game after game. This is not just one game. Regarding Tony Zenon … PJ said a couple weeks ago that Zenon kinda got lost in the mix, but he [PJ] meant to get him in more. I don’t think he’s played since the Miami game (when he returned a kickoff from a few yards deep in the endzone, and got tackled around the 10, which didn’t please PJ).

Kinda like BJ Bostic last season when he fumbled in like game 4 (after showing great play-making ability prior) only to hardly see the field the rest of the season.

What’s more about Zenon is that PJ himself was praising who good the kid was coming out of Summer camp … even awarding him Nesbitt’s #9. He had the opening, 79-yd TD vs MTSU, and the longest, by far, K.O. return this season (Maryland), yet rides the pine now??

GT Joe,

I’m with you on the SEC “Least” …… I’m kinda shocked at how bad it actually is! Then there’s Ole Miss, Miss St (I think ranked in EVERY preseason publication), and Auburn in the West. The SEC is LSU, Bama, Ark then everyone else this season.

Just think what UGA’s season/schedule would look like if they played their usual directional school in place of Boise ST, and got South Cackalack now!?

I can’t see them ever having a schedule as easy as 2011 has been. It’s pratically impossible. Hey, but good for them, even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now & then, rotten or not.

Go Dawgs, beat Kentucky. B/c if GT’s gonna beat them Dirty Dawgs I definitely don’t want the Dawgs being 2nd in the SEC East if/when they do! Repay the 2009 favor Jackets!

I know what you mean.

Also, for those of you that haven’t caught on, the SEC is Alabama, LSU, and ESPN. LSU and Alabama are their only national contenders. The rest of the SEC couldn’t beat their way out of a wet paper bag.

I never paid attention to ‘conference football’ until around 1999 or 2000. I worked with a Bama fan who told me that SEC teams would steam-roll anyone around. That year, I kept track of all of the SEC-ACC match-ups. The only SEC victory came in the form of Vandy beating Duke.

Anyway, I call 90% of the offensive plays that we run! If I can do that don’t you think the other team can do that too? Of course, its easy when you call the midline option, bback 1 yard play or QB sneak most of the time. There isn’t any passing except the fake and throw without a read whatsoever. I keep hearing its the o-line not making holes for the BBack and QB. So my question is why keep running the plays? How about a straight handoff to the BB back run to the edge, with the motion A back in front of him as a blocker? I haven’t seen that play in 5 games. There is just so much more that this offense can do that what CPJ is doing and has done since at GT. Going back to Gailey for a moment. Yes his record wasn’t great but the ACC was a much better conference then and GT played FSU every year. Under Gailey, GT lost in 2002 to an FSU team that went 9-5 overall and in 2003 to an FSU team that went 10-3 overall, This means that, excluding the head to head – FSU was 17-8 in the 2 years they beat GT.
Under CPJ, GT won in 2008 over an FSU team that went 9-4 overall and in 2009 over a team that went 7-6 overall – meaning excluding the head to head FSU was 16-8.

We need Orwin to get well, he is a player.

If the team thinks of Duke like they did about Va and Miami, they can look forward to the weed eater bowl. Just saying the level of effort seems to decrease the lower a team’s ranking appears to be. That is why we aren’t in the hunt for the ACC championship. Could say it is the coaches fault, but the players are the ones that have to get fired up.

So if you want a decent bowl trip guys, you better get after the Dukies or they will smack you upside your head and it will be the end of the 4th quarter before you realize it!!

So go after them just like you did the Tigers because they stand in your way of having a very good season and a mediocre one. Don’t be last years team!!!

GTJOE….you’re an idiot. CPJ is doing a great job at everything except special teams. ESPN compared our running back recruits to a horse stable. We beat number 5 Climpson, and 1 player caused us to lose to #10 vpisu. Special teams lost the game for us against Thug U. There is no viable excuse for losing at uva. I’d say that we’re doing alright. He needs to step on discipline on the field. Yes, Attaochu is a thug…honestly I’m hopin the ACC comes down hard on him and there is a petition starting around campus to have his scholarship revoked. So learn what you’re talking about before you speak. Also, to all you mutts fans…you’re competing in a dying conference. Come on, I mean aside from LSU and Alabama there aren’t any great teams in the SEC this year. Arkansas will likely get CRUSHED by LSU and their over inflated rank will drop. I mean aside from Boise State and South Carolina who has Georgia played of quality….the answer is no one except an over inflated Auburn. He made one blunder, and even if it did ultimately cost Tech a chance to win (and there’s no guarantee of that), what he did pales in comparison to the jock who punched a guy repeatedly in the groin after he was tackled. Whoever that was (and I admit to forgetting who or for what team), he only received the MANDATORY half-game suspension too. Why should what Attaochu did merit worse punishment? And why the hell should his scholarship be revoked?

Silver……, I agree that Fridge had problems with the MD AD, and he obviously should not have been fired, but overall, he still didn’t do as well as I had expected or hoped. As far as Maryland not having a football tradition, it might not be as rich as Tech’s is, but they did have some great teams in the 50s, perhaps before then. I’m really sorry you don’t like Johnson, but it appears that you ARE a Tech fan, which I initially doubted, and we all have our thoughts. You mentioned earlier that the ACC was overall stronger while Gailey was at Tech; I don’t accept that either. Remember, the conference champion in 2006 was a pretty mediocre Wake team that Gailey’s team managed to lose by virtually ignoring Calvin Johnson. I think VT has pretty much replaced FSU as the “power” of the ACC, and all 4 games under Johnson have been hard fought and relatively close, with us winning in 2009. Under Gailey, we were 1-3 against the Hokies, with one of those losses being 51-7. And his last game against VT was probably the poorest excuse for a football game I have ever seen. I was on the fence regarding him until that game; but that one was so embarrassing for the Jackets, I would have bought out his contract myself if I had had the money.

IF it were a regular thing done by Tech players, then yes, more severe consequences should be demanded, and I think Johnson WOULD act in a harsher manner. But, JA owned up to what he did and expressed his regret, and he is receiving the mandatory punishment PLUS whatever personal “punishment” Johnson has given him. I think to ask for or “demand” more is being very naive. And as far as the Fulmer cup, it’s “awarded” based on overall behavior on the team, both on and off the field. As far as we know, no Tech players have been arrested for anything anytime recently, minor or major. And this, bad as it was, is the ONLY example of bad behavior on the field.

Birmingham, it obviously will come as a surprise to you, but Johnson’s recruiting so far has been no worse than Gailey’s was, other than ONE 5-star player in Calvin Johnson. Tech has NEVER had outstanding recruiting, even under Dodd. Good coaches make the best of what they have, and since Johnson’s record for his first 4 years stands up very well against Dodd’s, Ross’s, and O’Leary’s, I’d say he’s doing pretty damn well. And I believe the best is yet to come.

superDawg, what the officials call is, so-to-speak, the law. Therefore, Tech DID win the game. And I might remind you, those were SEC refs at that game. Tech has NEVER forfeited, or been told to forfeit, a game. The initial ruling by the NCAA was that Tech would VACATE those games; that WOULD HAVE MEANT that the games essentially HAD NOT BEEN PLAYED. HOWEVER, that initial decision was REPEALED, and Tech did not have to vacate any games. So in 1999, Tech beat Georgia. DEAL WITH IT !!!! And, while we are talking about typical mutt whining about losses, TECH DID BEAT UGA in both 1943 and 1944. DEAL WITH THAT TOO !!!!

I rarely post here but I feel the need to do so after reading the comments tonight. My daughter is a freshman at Tech this year and a member of the band. I am a lifelong UGA fan and a graduate of Ga State. I have been to many stadiums to watch college football and the only time I came close to a fight happened this year at Ga Tech.

I took my 8 year old son to the clemson game to see his sister play. During the third quarter we went to grab some snacks. My son decided to wear one of his Dawg shirts to the game which I thought was no big deal. He ran ahead of me as children will do. I noticed some Tech students pointing at my son and was too far away to prevent one of the gutless punks from hip checking my 8 year old knocking him to the ground. I picked up my sobbing son and took him back to my wife.

By the time I returned to the drunken techies they were chatting with a cop. I admit I grabbed the idiot who injured my 8 year old by his throat and the cop had to pull me off of him. Luckily some Clemson fans had seen the whole attack on my son and told a cop. I was warned and the student was ejected.

Congrats on having the only fan base that would try and hurt a 8 year old child. My son is now afraid to go see his own sister perform. At least a few of my daughters friends have been making life hell for the idiot who hurt my son but I still am disgusted by tech’s cowardly fans.

My closest group of friends include 3 Georgia grads and they all have had nothing but nice things to say about my daughter going to Tech. It seems like the hate that so many of you feel about the Ga Ga Tech rivalry is mostly one sided.

OK, I am outta here now. I can leave with a big smile on my face. And I can finally say what I wanted to say a long time ago: First Tech Dad is a POS, and second, any fool that would wear a UGA shirt to a Tech game deserves what he gets (just kidding, but I still wanted to say that….LOL)

Well, if all these posts are true,
CPJ better coach.
GT better players.
GT plays a harder schedule than UGA
UGA is in the weakest conference in the land.
GT players are smarter.
UGA fans and players are thugs.

I think i’ll sell my 2 tickets to this match-up, obvious who the winners going to be.

I will tell you this. I attended the UGA v Bama game many years back with my Frat bro(Bama fan). That is the game where Zeier took over the starting job. We went to Dream Land BBQ before the game. I was a drunk butt and I threw rib bones at UGA fans after the game. A few weeks later I realized what it was to be a Fan and not a FANATIC. I felt bad once I sobered up. It was not even my team playing, but I was tired of how the UGA fans had me over the years. I was the BUTT. I don’t do that now, but I have received less than nice treatment at UGA games for a few years after that.

Only thing I didn’t see on these blogs was where GT’s 3-4 D led by Coach AG is so much better than UGA’s 3-4 D led by Coach Todd Grantham. I’m sure it’s listed on here I just overlooked it.

Observer…did you clock in? I see your shift begins at 9:00 pm and you’re 17 minutes late. Coach Grantham appears to have put together a heck of a 3-4 defense. The secondary is tough and the linebacker, Ogletree, is a beast. I expect a knock down drag out on the 26th.

Also, Observer, I like what I see from Coach Groh’s defense this year. Attaochu and Thomas are playmakers. There is always room for improvement, but I see improvement in many ways every game.

5150…dirty little secret. UGA women love Tech men. UGA women are beautiful but they do not have much to choose from at UGA. It’s either South Campus Rednecks (no offense) or North Campus Michael Stipes.

A red flag should have been thrown on Tech Dad from the moment that he said his daughter goes to Tech and he let his 8 yr old son wear a Georgia shirt to the Tech Clemson game…really?? What dumbass would put your kid in that situation?

I would never let one of my daughters wear a Tech shirt to the Ga/Auburn game…hell, I would never let my daughters go to Georgia!!

I say sit Orwin. Let Zenon, Hill, and Godhigh get some much deserved reps. After all they have been busting their tails every day since early August.

Plus Big O dropped a huge 3rd & 10 pass that hit him right in the hands vs the Turkeys, would’ve been a nice 1st down early on, and Poole wouldn’t have been called on to boom ANOTHER sub-30 yd punt.

Focus on 11/26! Forget Duke. Beat GA, then celebrate New Years in El Paso, TX (Sun Bowl), and get focused on 2012!

Okay….here is a play….why not put Hill at A back or at least inside where some of the pass plays are shorter and easier for TW to make? Especially in a shotgun situation. I understand having Hill or anyone catch a 50 yarder may be wasted but maybe not. However, at least 10 times against VT (and many other games except Clemson) I saw a corner 12-15 yards off the receiver. That should be an automatic pass in any situation. In the Clemson game that was automatic.

@Sean – Like I haven’t heard that before. Sometimes a fan has to speak out because no other fans will. I respect the opinion of some of the GT fans on this board. I try not to attack them personally if they don’t attack me personally. Despite my dislike of CPJ and Grohld, I do believe they are good coaches and their systems can work. I just think certain aspects can change to help insure that when things aren’t working, that you have an option with something different.

14 GT…I wish I could just drop everything and go coach. Unfortunately, I have debt that isn’t going to disappear in the meantime. CPJ gets paid alot more than I do. However, you are right. I haven’t given CPJ credit for what he has done right. He has given GT hope, where as Gailey really gave no one hope. He made GT respectable again. Most of all, he worries UGA. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be on this blog trying to make GT look so bad.

1 4 GT…i’m actually a Tech student and I sit in the north Endzone EVERY SINGLE GAME..

If you guys go back and watch the tapes from the Clemson game from this year there was a personal foul for Clemson near the North Endzone. It was because a Georgia Tech player punched one of their players square in the facemask on the play before. It wasn’t noticed by the refs. We got lucky then, but this has been an issue all season. It has just gone unnoticed until now and that is only because the ref was in the perfect place to see Attouchu screw up.
