Georgia Tech’s O. Smith may miss Duke game

Greetings-

Big news is A-back Orwin Smith was injured in the loss to Virginia Tech and may not play Saturday. Coach Paul Johnson made mention of the injury in response to a question about trying to get Smith more carries.

“Hard to get it to him when he’s over there with us (on the sideline),” Johnson said.

Johnson didn’t disclose the injury and said he didn’t think it was serious, “but if we had to play today, he probably couldn’t play.”

Johnson said Embry Peeples would likely start. Tony Zenon, Deon Hill and Robbie Godhigh might also get more snaps. In recent games, Roddy Jones, Peeples and Smith have been in a rotation. Monday, Johnson said, “I don’t think we’ve got any injuries for the next game. I mean, you’re always bumped and bruised after you come out of a game. We had a little extra time because it’s Thursday night, too.”

2. Linebackers Brandon Watts or Malcolm Munroe will likely start in place of Jeremiah Attaochu, Johnson said, depending on which package the defense starts out in. Attaochu will not play the first half of the Duke game as discipline for punching Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas in Thursday’s game.

3. With the goals of winning the ACC and going undefeated at home no longer possible, Johnson brought up to the team that only three Tech teams since 1956 have won 10 games. At 7-3, the Jackets can achieve that total by winning the final two regular-season games against Duke and Georgia and the bowl game. Playing for a better bowl is another motivation.

“If you want to keep position for a higher-pegged bowl game, then you need to win,” Johnson said.

4. Johnson on Duke: “I think Duke’s an improved team. They don’t have the wins to show for it, but I think they’re a better team than they were a year ago.”

5. With the B-back production not measuring up to the past standards with past Johnson teams, Johnson said coaches will look at the position and production from this season in the offseason and fully understand the nature of the lack of performance. He said he doesn’t think it’s necessarily the fault of B-backs David Sims and Preston Lyons.

“I haven’t seen any real gaping holes that they’ve failed had to run through,” he said.

Kind of thin. Apparently, Duke’s basketball team has a game of some import Tuesday that’s drawing a lot of attention.

Game stories from Duke’s loss to Virginia, from the Duke Chronicle and the Raleigh News & Observer.

Duke offensive tackle Kyle Hill, who started all 46 games he’d played in since 2008, has sustained a season-ending shoulder injury against UVa, per the school’s website. Tough way to go out.

Buzz is 11-0 in the Capital One Mascot Challenge, thanks in no small part, if I recall correctly, to the Tech marching band’s trumpet section, and is taking on Mike the Tiger from LSU this week. Michelle Hiskey “interviewed” Buzz and put together a first-person (first-bee?) story for the AJC.

Thanks for reading. I’ll have post-practice notes up this evening.

DAWG fan on the blog do you want to LAUGH? My mom has a pic of me wearing a red G sweater when I was a baby. She has it hidden because I will burn it. My Niece wants to attend UGA partley because of her dad’s brain washing. I have paided for her to go to GT Volleyball camp. The OTHER family members have convinced her to GO TO COLLEGE for a DEGREE not a PARTY.

ty webb, I had an aunt, now deceased, whose oldest son went to UGA. Their whole family went to a game once and a drunk UGA fan spilled whatever he was drinking all over her. Sure, it wasn’t deliberate, but she was disgusted, and the guy who did it was so drunk, he never even apologized. I read in the newspaper once several years ago about chairs and coolers being thrown at SC fans. I wasn’t there and didn’t see it, but it was in the VERY PRO-UGA Augusta newspaper.

UGA fans love to say TECH is full of Terrorists and Foreigners. That is because the students of Georgia public schools are DUMB as Rocks. The State of Georgia is bad in national rankings in math and science. If you want to turn Georgia around we need to stop hiring UGA grad teachers that spent the last 4 years getting DRUNK and LAID instead of becoming good teachers.

I rarely post here but I feel the need to do so after reading the comments tonight. My daughter is a freshman at Tech this year and a member of the band. I am a lifelong UGA fan and a graduate of Ga State. I have been to many stadiums to watch college football and the only time I came close to a fight happened this year at Ga Tech.

I took my 8 year old son to the clemson game to see his sister play. During the third quarter we went to grab some snacks. My son decided to wear one of his Dawg shirts to the game which I thought was no big deal. He ran ahead of me as children will do. I noticed some Tech students pointing at my son and was too far away to prevent one of the gutless punks from hip checking my 8 year old knocking him to the ground. I picked up my sobbing son and took him back to my wife.

By the time I returned to the drunken techies they were chatting with a cop. I admit I grabbed the idiot who injured my 8 year old by his throat and the cop had to pull me off of him. Luckily some Clemson fans had seen the whole attack on my son and told a cop. I was warned and the student was ejected.

Congrats on having the only fan base that would try and hurt a 8 year old child. My son is now afraid to go see his own sister perform. At least a few of my daughters friends have been making life hell for the idiot who hurt my son but I still am disgusted by tech’s cowardly fans.

Come on guys, GT will be a 7-5 or 8-3 school from now on.
The only way that changes is if GT becomes a much larger school with more majors, courses and fields of study
Then they will need a young tier 1 coach who can generate excitement and pro opportunities.
We are not at that level and CPJ should be applauded for what he has been able to do.

ty webb, I can assure that ALL I ever hear in Augusta (newspaper and TV) is UGA. The only times they actually write an article, or feature something on TV, about Tech is when they play UGA. What little else that gets reported in the paper is all AP writeups. The fact that something unflattering was written here about the dawgs is actually quite astounding.

Tech Dad, I apologize on the behalf of Tech fans everywhere. That is inexcusable behavior. I once witnessed a verbal slur thrown at a Tech kid in Athens, and the kid’s dad was not happy. But at least there was no physical contact made by either party. I am glad they ejected the drunk from the stadium, and I really hope that will not have any lasting effect on your son.

I and my sons are tech grads with multiple degrees
The fellow you describe sounds like a punk that every school has. I hadvthem in high school, at work, and every where else. Please tell your son that this is not typical of Tech but he will see these jerks for the rest of his life and it gets worse if you happen to get one for a boss – unfortunately it happens sometimes. For the most part, however, these guys just crash and burn, have miserable lives and are very unhappy.

5150 I find it laughable that you would run your mouth about any other fan base in the nation. I know for a fact you have been banned several times from UGA blogs for a variety of reasons. Some of the more deplorable were making jokes about UGA students being raped and the deaths of a potential UGA recruit as well as Georgia’s beloved mascot UGA.

That idiot supersize also lives on the Georgia blogs and makes comments that are beyond tasteless. I can only imagine the filth that comes out of your mouths at an actual game and then you complain that UGA fans give you a hard time. I would never raise my children to be classless trash like both of you and I pray neither of you have children and continue the mistakes your trailer trash parents made.

GTjohn, Tech will never modify or enlarge the curriculum, because every time in the past they have attempted to, it was voted down by the Board of Regents and the Georgia legislature. Plus, I don’t want Tech to become a proto-typical football factory anyway, and I doubt that most true Tech fans want that either.

Thanks to the fans who have the decency to apologise. The only reason I even posted was the pileing on of fans pretending UGA has a monoploy on bad behavior fans. I have been to well over a hundred college football games. The majority of those were in Athens and I never saw anything beyond the usual verbal taunts and most of those were good natured.

I know those students were not representing the actions of all Ga Tech students. If I thought that was the case I would have pulled my daughter out of Tech the next day despite her getting a better scholarship there than she would have got in Athens.
