Georgia Tech’s O. Smith may miss Duke game

Greetings-

Big news is A-back Orwin Smith was injured in the loss to Virginia Tech and may not play Saturday. Coach Paul Johnson made mention of the injury in response to a question about trying to get Smith more carries.

“Hard to get it to him when he’s over there with us (on the sideline),” Johnson said.

Johnson didn’t disclose the injury and said he didn’t think it was serious, “but if we had to play today, he probably couldn’t play.”

Johnson said Embry Peeples would likely start. Tony Zenon, Deon Hill and Robbie Godhigh might also get more snaps. In recent games, Roddy Jones, Peeples and Smith have been in a rotation. Monday, Johnson said, “I don’t think we’ve got any injuries for the next game. I mean, you’re always bumped and bruised after you come out of a game. We had a little extra time because it’s Thursday night, too.”

2. Linebackers Brandon Watts or Malcolm Munroe will likely start in place of Jeremiah Attaochu, Johnson said, depending on which package the defense starts out in. Attaochu will not play the first half of the Duke game as discipline for punching Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas in Thursday’s game.

3. With the goals of winning the ACC and going undefeated at home no longer possible, Johnson brought up to the team that only three Tech teams since 1956 have won 10 games. At 7-3, the Jackets can achieve that total by winning the final two regular-season games against Duke and Georgia and the bowl game. Playing for a better bowl is another motivation.

“If you want to keep position for a higher-pegged bowl game, then you need to win,” Johnson said.

4. Johnson on Duke: “I think Duke’s an improved team. They don’t have the wins to show for it, but I think they’re a better team than they were a year ago.”

5. With the B-back production not measuring up to the past standards with past Johnson teams, Johnson said coaches will look at the position and production from this season in the offseason and fully understand the nature of the lack of performance. He said he doesn’t think it’s necessarily the fault of B-backs David Sims and Preston Lyons.

“I haven’t seen any real gaping holes that they’ve failed had to run through,” he said.

Links

Kind of thin. Apparently, Duke’s basketball team has a game of some import Tuesday that’s drawing a lot of attention.

Game stories from Duke’s loss to Virginia, from the Duke Chronicle and the Raleigh News & Observer.

Duke offensive tackle Kyle Hill, who started all 46 games he’d played in since 2008, has sustained a season-ending shoulder injury against UVa, per the school’s website. Tough way to go out.

Buzz is 11-0 in the Capital One Mascot Challenge, thanks in no small part, if I recall correctly, to the Tech marching band’s trumpet section, and is taking on Mike the Tiger from LSU this week. Michelle Hiskey “interviewed” Buzz and put together a first-person (first-bee?) story for the AJC.

Thanks for reading. I’ll have post-practice notes up this evening.

I didn’t know blind loyalty to a program that has gradually turned into a cesspool of thugery was required. I am a graduate of Ga Tech which is more than most of the bandwagon loudmouths on this site can say. I do not frequent uga blogs because I am a Yellowjacket fan and not a moron who just hates the bulldogs. Again that is more than most of the people who post here can say.

5150…true that. I went to the Auburn vs. Florida game and the Auburn fans were easily some of the nicest fans I’ve ever had the joy of interacting with. They’re great people that actually want to enjoy football.

Dedicated, I’m not making excuses, but a punch to a helmet which barely even connected and would probably have done more harm to Attacochus hand than to the helmet hardly constitutes repetitive behavior. IF it were a regular thing done by Tech players, then yes, more severe consequences should be demanded, and I think Johnson WOULD act in a harsher manner. But, JA owned up to what he did and expressed his regret, and he is receiving the mandatory punishment PLUS whatever personal “punishment” Johnson has given him. I think to ask for or “demand” more is being very naive. And as far as the Fulmer cup, it’s “awarded” based on overall behavior on the team, both on and off the field. As far as we know, no Tech players have been arrested for anything anytime recently, minor or major. And this, bad as it was, is the ONLY example of bad behavior on the field.

I know WHY most teams all agree that the UGA fans are the worst outside their Traditional Instate Rival. UGA fans are the Azz of college football. I am saying that as a TECH fan, but I have been to other games where UGA was the OTHER TEAM. Bama, Auburn, Tennessee, and South Carolina fans all agree UGA fans are the worst.

UOAD, you are right on all counts. The fans of other teams in the southeast DESPISE the Georgia fans and HATE going to Athens.

As much as I have always hated Notre Dame, those were the nicest fans and the best overall setup for a college game that I have ever seen……ANYWHERE !!!!

UGA’s Ben Jones tried to take out a Miss St players Knee from behind and then jumped on Fairley and was punching him in the gut under the pile. Ben Jones does it more than once.

Clemson fans and the setup they have there are also exceptional. I have only been to Auburn once, and I don’t remember much, so it must not have been a bad experience. When Tech used to play Bama and Auburn at Legion Field, I don’t remember the fans there being too gracious, but that was a LONG TIME AGO. Other than parking and the fact that their fans act more like HS kids than college fans, USC in Columbia is not a bad place to go either.

ahhh, so it was a UGA player who did that. I was thinking it happened in a UNC game, but I didn’t remember which player, or for which team, did it. Repeated punching is far more thuggish than one punch at a helmet.

UOAD, I was wished “good morning” and “I hope you enjoy your visit to Notre Dame” MANY times prior to the game. And after Tech won, lots of ND fans offered congratulations for our win. I went up there wanting to hate them and wanting to be a poor-sport winner afterwards, but how can you do that when you are met with such grace?

I have a good friend here in Augusta who is a Georgia fan and a BIG Augusta State basketball fan. He went to Athens 4 years ago when ASU played the dawgs there. ASU almost won the game, and he told me that for the first time ever he understood why I dislike UGA fans so much. He said he was treated to rudeness and insults the entire night. As a Georgia fan, he had never realized just how badly some (I think many) of their fans act. I told him because of his experience he should just totally switch his loyalties. He laughed. He’s still a dawg fan :(

UGA does a very good job of indoctrination. I personally know TWO (2) guys that are die-hard UGA fans but received their degrees from Tech. I asked them why they even bothered going to Tech if they were such big-time dawg fans. Both said the same thing: “I love UGA but I’m not trusting them with my education.”

I wonder how UGA fans and alumni feel knowing that everyone views their school as a clown parade?

supersize and 5150 are the perfect examples of bandwagon fans who never entered the hallowed halls of Ga Tech. Though I am no fan of the pups I don’t understand why so many of the most vocal “fans” that post here lifes revolve around hateing Georgia. Maybe if our program was not in such a sad state and I didn’t have friends and family I could find time to whine about a team in another conference.

To be honest I think it is a distinct possibility that 5150 and supersize are the same person. I hate to call out other fans of the Jackets but I think he is not so much of a fan as just a bulldog enemy and that is far from being the same thing.

Many UGA fans have been past classy in Athens and Atlanta. I can HONESTLY say UGA fans have been to WORST to be around on Game Day without a close second.

Birmingham, it obviously will come as a surprise to you, but Johnson’s recruiting so far has been no worse than Gailey’s was, other than ONE 5-star player in Calvin Johnson. Tech has NEVER had outstanding recruiting, even under Dodd. Good coaches make the best of what they have, and since Johnson’s record for his first 4 years stands up very well against Dodd’s, Ross’s, and O’Leary’s, I’d say he’s doing pretty damn well. And I believe the best is yet to come.

superDawg, what the officials call is, so-to-speak, the law. Therefore, Tech DID win the game. And I might remind you, those were SEC refs at that game. Tech has NEVER forfeited, or been told to forfeit, a game. The initial ruling by the NCAA was that Tech would VACATE those games; that WOULD HAVE MEANT that the games essentially HAD NOT BEEN PLAYED. HOWEVER, that initial decision was REPEALED, and Tech did not have to vacate any games. So in 1999, Tech beat Georgia. DEAL WITH IT !!!! And, while we are talking about typical mutt whining about losses, TECH DID BEAT UGA in both 1943 and 1944. DEAL WITH THAT TOO !!!!
