Greetings-
Big news is A-back Orwin Smith was injured in the loss to Virginia Tech and may not play Saturday. Coach Paul Johnson made mention of the injury in response to a question about trying to get Smith more carries.
“Hard to get it to him when he’s over there with us (on the sideline),” Johnson said.
Johnson didn’t disclose the injury and said he didn’t think it was serious, “but if we had to play today, he probably couldn’t play.”
Johnson said Embry Peeples would likely start. Tony Zenon, Deon Hill and Robbie Godhigh might also get more snaps. In recent games, Roddy Jones, Peeples and Smith have been in a rotation. Monday, Johnson said, “I don’t think we’ve got any injuries for the next game. I mean, you’re always bumped and bruised after you come out of a game. We had a little extra time because it’s Thursday night, too.”
2. Linebackers Brandon Watts or Malcolm Munroe will likely start in place of Jeremiah Attaochu, Johnson said, depending on which package the defense starts out in. Attaochu will not play the first half of the Duke game as discipline for punching Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas in Thursday’s game.
3. With the goals of winning the ACC and going undefeated at home no longer possible, Johnson brought up to the team that only three Tech teams since 1956 have won 10 games. At 7-3, the Jackets can achieve that total by winning the final two regular-season games against Duke and Georgia and the bowl game. Playing for a better bowl is another motivation.
“If you want to keep position for a higher-pegged bowl game, then you need to win,” Johnson said.
4. Johnson on Duke: “I think Duke’s an improved team. They don’t have the wins to show for it, but I think they’re a better team than they were a year ago.”
5. With the B-back production not measuring up to the past standards with past Johnson teams, Johnson said coaches will look at the position and production from this season in the offseason and fully understand the nature of the lack of performance. He said he doesn’t think it’s necessarily the fault of B-backs David Sims and Preston Lyons.
“I haven’t seen any real gaping holes that they’ve failed had to run through,” he said.

Kind of thin. Apparently, Duke’s basketball team has a game of some import Tuesday that’s drawing a lot of attention.
Game stories from Duke’s loss to Virginia, from the Duke Chronicle and the Raleigh News & Observer.
Duke offensive tackle Kyle Hill, who started all 46 games he’d played in since 2008, has sustained a season-ending shoulder injury against UVa, per the school’s website. Tough way to go out.
Buzz is 11-0 in the Capital One Mascot Challenge, thanks in no small part, if I recall correctly, to the Tech marching band’s trumpet section, and is taking on Mike the Tiger from LSU this week. Michelle Hiskey “interviewed” Buzz and put together a first-person (first-bee?) story for the AJC.
Thanks for reading. I’ll have post-practice notes up this evening.

Who said: “Yeah…that Big East is a real power conference…”
I know what you mean.
Also, for those of you that haven’t caught on, the SEC is Alabama, LSU, and ESPN. LSU and Alabama are their only national contenders. The rest of the SEC couldn’t beat their way out of a wet paper bag.
I never paid attention to ‘conference football’ until around 1999 or 2000. I worked with a Bama fan who told me that SEC teams would steam-roll anyone around. That year, I kept track of all of the SEC-ACC match-ups. The only SEC victory came in the form of Vandy beating Duke.
I just don’t see uga, SC, Vandy, UK, Missy St, etc, striking fear into any hearts.

That’s awesome!! We just have to make sure it is the only one this year!! I have to say, I went into the season hoping to be competitive. Never expected what we have done. I figured that this year was going to be a “rebuilding” one, but they have done well and if not for a couple of plays/series, we could have a better record.
No matter what happens the rest of the year, it is getting better.

You are crazy. You are really trying to give Johnson kudos for having a few more pointless wins than Gailey? At least when Gailey was there the ACC was borderline competitive and relevant.

armie..& Richt has won 100+ games against MOSTLY the bad SEC teams. Vandy & Kentucky account for 20-21 of those wins. Ole Miss and Miss St add how many wins to that list? USCe have only been good for 2 years so add another 9-10 wins. Add the Coastal Carolina’s and Weak Sisters of the Poor @ 3 x 11 equals another 33.

Pretty sure UGA is ranked 14th BCS. Therefore they are of far more “quality” than 10 ACC teams, including your joke of a program. The ACC is still the worst conference of all time. Those are the ACTUAL facts

DALPZ..the only person making childish remarks is you. I am talking football and x’s and o’s. BTW I have more education than your entire family put together! Anyway, I call 90% of the offensive plays that we run! If I can do that don’t you think the other team can do that too? Of course, its easy when you call the midline option, bback 1 yard play or QB sneak most of the time. There isn’t any passing except the fake and throw without a read whatsoever. I keep hearing its the o-line not making holes for the BBack and QB. So my question is why keep running the plays? How about a straight handoff to the BB back run to the edge, with the motion A back in front of him as a blocker? I haven’t seen that play in 5 games. There is just so much more that this offense can do that what CPJ is doing and has done since at GT. Going back to Gailey for a moment. Yes his record wasn’t great but the ACC was a much better conference then and GT played FSU every year. I am not saying hire Gailey back, but I am saying things weren’t that much different than under CPJ. Hire Ralph Friedgen. Get rid of CPJ and Grohld.
