Greetings-
Big news is A-back Orwin Smith was injured in the loss to Virginia Tech and may not play Saturday. Coach Paul Johnson made mention of the injury in response to a question about trying to get Smith more carries.
“Hard to get it to him when he’s over there with us (on the sideline),” Johnson said.
Johnson didn’t disclose the injury and said he didn’t think it was serious, “but if we had to play today, he probably couldn’t play.”
Johnson said Embry Peeples would likely start. Tony Zenon, Deon Hill and Robbie Godhigh might also get more snaps. In recent games, Roddy Jones, Peeples and Smith have been in a rotation. Monday, Johnson said, “I don’t think we’ve got any injuries for the next game. I mean, you’re always bumped and bruised after you come out of a game. We had a little extra time because it’s Thursday night, too.”
2. Linebackers Brandon Watts or Malcolm Munroe will likely start in place of Jeremiah Attaochu, Johnson said, depending on which package the defense starts out in. Attaochu will not play the first half of the Duke game as discipline for punching Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas in Thursday’s game.
3. With the goals of winning the ACC and going undefeated at home no longer possible, Johnson brought up to the team that only three Tech teams since 1956 have won 10 games. At 7-3, the Jackets can achieve that total by winning the final two regular-season games against Duke and Georgia and the bowl game. Playing for a better bowl is another motivation.
“If you want to keep position for a higher-pegged bowl game, then you need to win,” Johnson said.
4. Johnson on Duke: “I think Duke’s an improved team. They don’t have the wins to show for it, but I think they’re a better team than they were a year ago.”
5. With the B-back production not measuring up to the past standards with past Johnson teams, Johnson said coaches will look at the position and production from this season in the offseason and fully understand the nature of the lack of performance. He said he doesn’t think it’s necessarily the fault of B-backs David Sims and Preston Lyons.
“I haven’t seen any real gaping holes that they’ve failed had to run through,” he said.

Kind of thin. Apparently, Duke’s basketball team has a game of some import Tuesday that’s drawing a lot of attention.
Game stories from Duke’s loss to Virginia, from the Duke Chronicle and the Raleigh News & Observer.
Duke offensive tackle Kyle Hill, who started all 46 games he’d played in since 2008, has sustained a season-ending shoulder injury against UVa, per the school’s website. Tough way to go out.
Buzz is 11-0 in the Capital One Mascot Challenge, thanks in no small part, if I recall correctly, to the Tech marching band’s trumpet section, and is taking on Mike the Tiger from LSU this week. Michelle Hiskey “interviewed” Buzz and put together a first-person (first-bee?) story for the AJC.
Thanks for reading. I’ll have post-practice notes up this evening.

The problem with BBack production is the lack of production by the 5 OL. That will get better as they mature in the next couple of years. Tech is a couple of years away from a really fine team.

I for one get tired of hearing “They’re 2nd youngest team” Bull crap. I was listening to Coach Leech (who I WISH was coaching at GT) talking about folks saying “But our team is so young! In two years they’ll be unstoppable” Then after two years & they still stink people say “Well they got thrown into the fire as freshmen & never had time to develop” Its all hogwash” I have to agree. These recruits are young & just flat out stink. Their size reminds me of a HS JV squad more than a D-1 program. The fact that only 3 teams have had 10 win seasons since 56 is a crying shame.

GT will play good against Duke and win pretty big, Big game from Toney Zenon, S Hill and J Greene will get his 1st catch.
GT / UGA game will be defensive struggle, UGA’s defense will hold down Tech offense for about a half, then Tech controls game in the 2nd half. Tech 24 UGA 13

BigTimeTech I can appreciate some optimisum but lets face reality. This team is gonna struggle with Puke just like VT did. I don’t see us scoring more than 17 on Georgia & them hanging 45 on us.

Jacket man,
First off, when you play in the worst BCS conference in the nation there is really zero statisfaction in becoming bowl eligible. Secondly, where exactly is the “value of getting a Tek education” at? Dead last in the ACC in both football and basketball graduation rates. Good lie though.
And “a winning” program???? You must have a great sense of humor.

For the record…we ARE the second youngest BCS team in the nation…just sayin’! You work you tail off for a portion of what CPJ gets paid? Whose fault is that?! CPJ is worth every penny and I look forward to the day when it all comes together and CPJ is standing on the sideline…with that smirk on his face that I KNOW you mutts all love! It might not happen this year…but, it’s coming and I have ZERO confidence that many of y’all will show your faces. Good luck with that paycheck of yours!

We agree. I think I speak for all dawg fans when I say please keep CPJ as long as possible.
We know it hasn’t happened yet for CPJ. But as anyone can see he is a genius and clearly will bring many many ACC titles and NCAA championships to the flats .
Its just a matter of time …..

SilverandBlack, you don’t see much difference between Gailey and CPJ? You sir, are an idiot. Here’s the stats:
2002: 7-6
2003: 7-6
2004: 7-5
2005: 7-5
2006: 9-5
2007:7-6
Under Johnson:
2008: 9-4
2009: 11-3
2010: 6-7
2011: 7-3
You really don’t see any difference with those numbers? You can say that the good years were with Gailey’s players all you want… He did better than Gailey with Gailey’s players! Johnson is 33-17 at GT and is going to win a heck of a lot more games in less time. If you think that we should have kept Gailey around then you need to get your head examined. My god, we do better than expected this year and everybody is still flying off of the bandwagon.

Difference is the ACC has tanked while CPJ has been around. They ACC was a MUCH better conference when Gailey was around.
He is struggling to win in the worst conference in America.
When some of the bigger programs in the ACC come around he is in big trouble.
But by all means keep him. 1 less game to worry about every year.

Regarding Tony Zenon … PJ said a couple weeks ago that Zenon kinda got lost in the mix, but he [PJ] meant to get him in more. I don’t think he’s played since the Miami game (when he returned a kickoff from a few yards deep in the endzone, and got tackled around the 10, which didn’t please PJ).
Kinda like BJ Bostic last season when he fumbled in like game 4 (after showing great play-making ability prior) only to hardly see the field the rest of the season.
What’s more about Zenon is that PJ himself was praising who good the kid was coming out of Summer camp … even awarding him Nesbitt’s #9. He had the opening, 79-yd TD vs MTSU, and the longest, by far, K.O. return this season (Maryland), yet rides the pine now??

It amazes me how many pew-GA fans post here. The Jackets will beat Duke. They will then beat the thugs and drunks from Athens and with a bowl win will have a 10 win season. Young we are, but CPJ and CAG are doing a great job. Yes we should have beaten pew-VA and probably VT, but I firmly believe another winning season is already guaranteed. So be proud Jackets fans! I recall when we were stuck with that Bill Lewis schmuck and some awful, awful years. We’re consistent, we’re winning and we WILL SPAY/NEUTER and beat the dogs.

For the UGA fans on here,
39Ws — 43Ls, with (2-8) Kentucky looming, is the record of the Dawgs’ opponents that have succumbed to their 8-game winning streak.
Easy to be optimistic when you’re winning (See GT after NCST and 6-0).
Outside of LSU, BAMA, & Ark the SEC is no powerhouse. Pretty amazing how bad some of the teams are (UF, UT, Ole Miss, Kentucky). Yeah, UGA’s good, they got too many good players not to be. But are they as good as the recent optimism suggests? This GT Fan hopes 11/26 proves not.

GT Joe,
I’m with you on the SEC “Least” …… I’m kinda shocked at how bad it actually is! Then there’s Ole Miss, Miss St (I think ranked in EVERY preseason publication), and Auburn in the West. The SEC is LSU, Bama, Ark then everyone else this season.
Just think what UGA’s season/schedule would look like if they played their usual directional school in place of Boise ST, and got South Cackalack now!?
I can’t see them ever having a schedule as easy as 2011 has been. It’s pratically impossible. Hey, but good for them, even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now & then, rotten or not.
Go Dawgs, beat Kentucky. B/c if GT’s gonna beat them Dirty Dawgs I definitely don’t want the Dawgs being 2nd in the SEC East if/when they do! Repay the 2009 favor Jackets!
