Georgia Tech’s Attaochu suspended half-game
Georgia Tech outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu will sit out the first half of the Yellow Jackets’ game against Duke on Saturday as punishment for throwing a punch at Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas last Thursday.
Tech coach Paul Johnson made the decision after reviewing the game video. He said he decided on a half-game suspension as that would have been the punishment had he been thrown out of the game and because the strike was out of character for Attaochu. Johnson said he gave Attaochu additional disciplinary measures that are between him and Attaochu.
“It’s out of character for him,” Johnson said. “Certainly, that’s not his M.O., and that’s why it’s not more. But I think that certainly, we don’t condone that and I know he’s learned his lesson, but there still needs to be something. You have to pay a price when you mess up.”
Johnson said Attaochu, whose strike of Thomas drew a personal foul penalty and was a momentum-changing play in the Hokies’ 37-26 victory that dropped the Jackets out of ACC title contention, was embarrassed and sorry for his action.

@Dawg, one of things I’ve noticed over the last several years is all the talk that goes on after the play is over. My coaches would have had their foot up mhy butt if we had played that way. Played hard till the whistle and go back to your huddle. I wonder how much of that has to do with what we see on the pro level? Whoofing, me first, jabbering, look at me………..I just don’t get it. As I’ve said to my son and others I’ve coached…………..son, act like you’ve been there before

Amazing video of a high school player from Columbia TN who kicks the ball dead straight 75-80 yards in the air. He was successful on 54 of 54 attempts this season….100%. Now he needs a college team.

Headley Lamar,
Attaochu would have missed a full game if he were a student at UGA or Kentucky, if drugs were involved (for the 1st time). Also, I am amazed that the ACC didn’t rule in the punching case. Guess they aren’t as strict as the SEC in that regard, either.

There was no ejection. The SEC handed down the ruling. Also, Mark Richt has handed down his own punishments in the past when the SEC did nothing to the player. The drug issue really does vary from college to college and conference to conference. Not fair.

Attaochu had a very poor lapse of judgment at a critical point in the game. I cringed when I saw the punch from the stands and shouted, “No he didn’t” !. Nevertheless, nobody was physically hurt (except for maybe Attaochu’s hand). It really hurt Tech’s chances at the game and the ACCCG. 1/2 game seems fair. Nobody feels worse about it than JA. Lesson learned.
