Al Groh on Georgia Tech defense

Greetings-

Have some Al Groh elocutions and a few links for you. I’m going to be taking a break for the next few days, more or less, so I won’t be posting notes on the blog this evening or Thursday. I’ll have something up short this afternoon. Onward…

1. On the Virginia-Virginia Tech rivalry:

“To give an analogy to the fans around here using Georgia and Georgia Tech’s rivalry, it’s as if suddenly we were both in the same conference. The tradition of the rivalry would be heightened just that much more because of the impact that it would have on conference standing, championships, postseason play and whatnot. That rivalry was always good, a very good one, but then when Virginia Tech came in the Atlantic Coast Conference and the game was at the end of the year and had the potential to have great implications on each team’s seasons in more ways than it ever did before.”

I obviously wasn’t around for it when Tech was in the SEC, but it’s hard to imagine how much more intense the Georgia-Tech rivalry would be if both schools were in the same conference.

2. Groh said that Virginia Tech is more multiple in its personnel packages than Clemson, primarily because the versatility of Clemson tight end Dwayne Allen allowed the Tigers to do a lot of different things without substituting. Note about Allen, by the way. His turf toe was hurting pretty badly Saturday and is going to keep him out of practice this week. He’ll make a difference, should both teams make the ACC title game.

3. Groh called a lot of blitzes, particularly late in the game, depending on the secondary to hold up on the back end in man coverage.

“They did a real nice job and they did allow us to try to be pretty aggressive given the circumstances and do some of the things that we would have liked to have done. We felt those players could execute those things. A lot of times, it’s not just about us having confidence on the sidelines. You want to call something that the player himself has confidence in executing.”

Secondary coach Charles Kelly deserve a good bit of credit for developing the defensive backs, which have become an obvious strength and will have four of the top five plus Fred Holton (out for the year with a torn Achilles) back next season.

4. On Jemea Thomas:

“He certainly was a real big-play performer the other night. Those are the kind of guys we look to get into the game. Based on how he’s evolved at that spot (and) plays that he made, we’ll certainly be looking to expand his role.”

Thomas merits it, obviously. It’ll be interesting to see what that will look like. I wouldn’t say any of the starting four defensive backs – cornerbacks Rod Sweeting and Louis Young and safeties Isaiah Johnson and Rashaad Reid – have played their way out of the lineup. Maybe they’d rotate more. Thomas can play both safety and corner, so perhaps that’s an option.

5. On the defense’s progress:

“It’s been a pretty good process. We were able to, the last two games probably, sustain performance more but in some of those earlier games, there was evidence of it that they could see. North Carolina, I think, we’d given up one touchdown in the first half, N.C. State, the same way, Maryland a field goal and whatnot. There’ve been a lot of the games where the start was fairly positive so there were a lot of plays within the game to show them this is what it can be just with more consistency. Just have to feel that maybe the process of the season as they’ve gotten more and more looks at things, they’ve gotten the consistency to sustain them through the game.”

It’s interesting; everything Groh said was true and fits into the narrative of the defense’s progress, but I imagine few of you would have been willing to accept him saying something like, “We’re getting better; we played good defense for a half against North Carolina. We just need to be more consistent” (and that probably includes me) it, particularly after the Virginia game or if the Maryland game had turned out differently. And, also, if Virginia Tech lights up the defense for 35 points and 450 yards, I imagine the “Tech can’t play 3-4 defense” and “Same old defense” sentiments will return.

To that end…

6. Groh on what Thomas does well:

“He’s got good instincts. He’s a very competitive player. He’s got a nice burst. His plays the other night, they clearly had a big impact on the game, but probably the next three games will provide a better answer to your question than anything that I say. I don’t expect this to be the case, but we get into the terminology of the famous ‘One-game wonder.’ Nice story for the time being, but the future is now. The past is done.”

Groh is not a man easily satisfied. For the record, the last part of his comment might come off sounding callous, but that wasn’t the case, just his matter-of-fact way of speaking. I imagine he was more than elated about Thomas’ play, but has a longer-term view. Just Groh being Groh, as one might say.

That’s it. A reminder to all of you posting that you’re not the only ones reading your comments. Please be mindful of more impressionable and sensitive eyes. I think I speak for most when I say that the redneck/nerd (or worse) debate really gets tiresome to wade through. I’d prefer to not have to step in.

the mention was too kind, but what we really appreciate your bring up the concerns of the faithful-DL,special teams, QB inconsistentcy & back-up, as it seems the coaches have really addressed these weaknesses….after all, it is hard to appreciate something without having a little basic understanding of it, &, if we are not paid to run it, we pay to help it run…(still, nothing about the DL-did #90 start, haven’t looked back at the replay yet?)

And before you argue it can’t possibly be a uga fan, why on God’s green earth would any tech fan try to contact a 4 or 5 star recruit to try and get him to NOT come to tech. Sick sick sick site and whoever took the time to put that together and contact the recruits via social media (in addition to current and former players) IS truly a sociopath —-> just a step above feces and common criminals. Those individuals will be featured on 60 minutes someday for a horrific crime probably if they are already stalking 18-22 year olds.

Sorry for the seeming diss RTR, it was not intentional, I just did not consider UofA a “rival” for UGA given the rarity of recent games with each other. On a side note, you guys RECRUIT very well AND WIN NC’s with some amazing regularity (unlike some posers we all know). Best of luck to your team this weekend.

Reggie Ball last played for Tech in 2006. FIVE years ago. And by then, no Tech fans liked him. Why try to make fun of us now for what an old coach did back then? I thought history was something the rest of CFB hated for GT fans to do. Which is it – history or the present time? Because right now we’re 7-2 on a bye week preparing for the #12 team in the land after thoroughly drubbing the #5 team on both sides of the ball. Whoever you root for…are they any big deal compared to #5 and #12? Hmmm…yeah maybe go spew it somewhere else. Maybe New Mexico State will listen.

What a ridiculous thing to try and make fun of Tech with five years after the fact…we FIRED the coach who kept Reggie Ball in the game! Fired him. Anyway, Bama is dominant for sure, but Georgie is most definitely not impressing anyone wearing Old Gold this year.

The 3-4 defense, like the option, is great to watch as long as the coaches are FEARLESS. No team, college or pro, has enough shut down defensive backs to defend against a good QB/receiver combo for more than 4 or 5 seconds. You have to blitz. No rush = no defense. No risk = no reward.

Keep on blitzing Al !!!!!

Perhaps 5 years ago for Reggie Ball, but one only needs to go back 2 years to get a perspective of a typical UGA fan.

UGA Eases Tailgating Restrictions (as reported by AJC)

The breaking point came on Sept. 12, 2009, when workers collected from North Campus about 70 tons of garbage and mounds of tents, grills, coolers and chairs. That day, fans were witnessed urinating on public buildings and defecating outdoors.

Ken, as always, thanks for your efforts…and thanks for the warning/request to keep the blog focused on the subject at hand. It really is tiresome.

I’m starting to like Groh a little more these days. I thought about the fact that the best D Coordinators in the NFL have always been the guys that have been there a long time, with lots of experirence – Jim Johnson with Philly all those years, Dick Labeau with Pitt. He certainly knows a lot about the defensive side of the ball. My only complaint is his decisions on who gets playing time. Everybody that watched us play from Day 1 could see that Jemea is the kind of player that just makes things happen. CPJ even said earlier that “we need to get him on the field”. And they whole TJ Barnes thing has been perplexing. He obviously has talent but for some reason Al just doesn’t want him on the field that much. Maybe these things that appear obvious to me (and others) are a bit more complicated.

All that being said, I’ve stated that the D is better than last year, and it appears to be improving every game. Let’s take it to the next level and put up a solid effort the entire game against VT. I will be there cheering them on.

A moron, that’s who. Any Tech fan going to the UGA blog and posting trash is just a child, and probably never went to Tech, and is no better. Ken, nice work and a good time to take a break you surely deserve!

Looking at conference stats for both Tech’s its pretty close on paper. I would like to point at recent trends for each team but last week proved that’s questionable at best after what GT did to Clemson when expected to get blown out.

What I would say is young teams get better as the season progresses and play better at home more vs veteran teams who are more consistent.

Defense is clearly improving and I could see it even in the losses. Tevin has adjusted to the fact that he is going to be forced to carry the ball more on the option by opposing defenses. CPJ adjustment on the read key was amazingly effective but we are spoiled because weve come to expect it. I knew he had done something but like most fans couldn’t tell what.

Early in the year I hoped to hold teams to 25 points knowing we would surely score 30+. The way the D is playing lately I think that number is more like 20 or less, especially at home.

VT will give us there best shot. I think we have more O and the D is about even especially at BDS.

they have some really great d’s in the sec or some really bad teams. last time i looked the sec looks more like the big 10. tosu, um and 8 little indians.

of course lets not forget that the sec abuses over signing like no other conference in the country. if they are so great why do they have to cheat to stay competitive.

than we look at what the sec did when it was suggested that they raise the minimum gpa requirement from 1.8 to 2.0. can you say wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

maybe the time has come to recognize that the sec is not a conference of college teams but rather 11 semi pro teams and one academic institution. thank god they have vandy eh?

- first place finishes as the number one partay school
- recruiting championships over the last 10 years
- being pre season no 1

as real national championships.

for instance you dawgs love to point out that you won the 68 mnc with an 8-2 record because a rag like national lampoon crowned you.

the real and nationally recognized mnc of 68 was the osu team that went undefeated. beat no1 purdue. beat a top 10 um squad by almost 50 points. and beat an oj led usc team in their own stadium at the rose bowl. by 2 tds after trailing at half.

you dawgs wish in your dreams you had a season like that.

imo they need to consider ‘class’ as part of that equation. if they did than the urinating and defecating trash tossing dawgs would be eliminated every year from consideration in any mnc debate.

Give Logan Walls a bit of a break, guys. He’s a 5th-year grad student. The nose tackle position is pretty much him and T. J. Barnes, who has been improving over the past 2 years, and TJ had a very strong performance against Clemson. If one of those were to go down, it will require one of the DEs to move to the position.

Looking over the list of 2011 recruits, there are no D-linemen there, but between Shaq Mason, who played very well against Clemson, Trey Braun, who is being redshirted and Bryan Chamberlain (redshirting), that looks good for the future there. The fact that Braun was the top wrestler in Florida is a big plus. For DT-types I guess we’ll have to see who signs in February. Dalvin Tomlinson would be a huge catch, and he was at the Clemson game. Everybody from Alabama to Harvard has offered him.

Delbert D.

November 2nd, 2011

I forgot to mention, Tomlinson is a wrestler, as well. 2-time state champion with a 120-2 record. He lost his first match, and lost the other on a DQ by body-slamming an opponent.

That info is from a Michael Carvell article in August.

I’m not putting Logan down. I admire him for what he has done, but I don’t think that the position was a natural fit for him. I am sure that is true, but I agree that the greater use of the term referred to farmers and other outdoor laborers who, obviously, had red necks. Can we type the word we are looking for?

I think that is the strength of Georgia Tech. We have lots of Engineers, but what we really do for a living can take on all facets. We have a hard school. Teaches students to overcome and work hard. That’s our legacy and above all…doing it the RIGHT way. I think that is what we see on the field of play. We EXPECT it for our student athletes. That sense….and our values give our Institution a reputation that attracts the kind of people who I consider ‘good’ people. And good people make good things happen.
