Greetings-
I am going to write a special teams story for Thursday’s paper as it seems to be a bit of a topic this week. I’ll tell you off the top – I don’t think hiring a special teams coordinator is necessarily the solution.
The flaws are easy to point out. Punter Sean Poole has nailed several booming kicks that have been covered perfectly, like his 52-yarder against Miami that netted 54. But he’s also mishit a bunch. Kickoff specialist David Scully, like Justin Moore before him, have had trouble reaching the goal line. Moore has had a pretty rough year kicking field goals.
I see where it makes sense to say, special teams needs its own coach, someone who can spend all his time on the kickers and punters honing their technique, improving the kickoff return game and telling Zach Laskey not to pick up a bouncing punt inside the 10-yard line. On the ACC teleconference Wednesday, I asked Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe about the pros and cons of having a coach dedicated exclusively to special teams, which he’d decided to do for the first time this year. He said it has turned out well, that he liked having a coach who could spend the whole practice with the specialists and could spend all of his time during the day preparing the game plan, studying film, etc.
Wake Forest kicker Jimmy Newman is 13-for-14 on field goals, which validates Grobe’s argument. The only problem is, Wake’s punting unit is about as ineffective as Tech’s. Tech’s net punting average is 34.9 yards and Wake’s is 34.4. (If you’re wondering, Wake’s average isn’t skewed by a long return, either. The longest punt return against the Deacons this year is 23 yards.) Their kickoff return units are just about the same (20.9 yards for Wake, 19.6 for Tech), and I’d say that Tech’s kickoff return team is the most underperforming unit on special teams. Despite Wake putting nine kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks, to Tech’s four, its net kickoff coverage is less than 3 yards better than Tech’s.
Florida State looks like it has far and away the best special teams in the conference this season. The Seminoles are first in kickoff coverage (they have 19 touchbacks, which I imagine must make you salivate), first in punt net, second in kickoff returns and fourth in punt return average. Kicker Dustin Hopkins is 12-for-13 on field goals. However, they’re managing that despite essentially handling special teams the way that Tech does. Their special teams coordinator is also their running backs coach. Tech secondary coach Charles Kelly doesn’t have a special teams coordinator title, but he serves in that capacity.
Virginia Tech, widely regarded as having some of the best special teams in the country under coach Frank Beamer, had all kinds punting problems earlier in the year. I read something kind of interesting about Beamer this week. He said that he never coaches his kickers and punters on technique and he tells his staff to leave them alone, also. He lets their private coaches do all of the technique stuff.
The other thing is this: if not having a special teams coordinator was the real problem, then the problems would be systemic. However, Tech has blocked or deflected two field goals and a punt. The long snapping has been fine (and I realize that sounds ridiculous, but I imagine no one would have any problems arguing it the other way if a few long snaps had been botched). Tech’s punt cover unit wouldn’t be as good as they are when Poole does hit it well. Punt returner Zach Laskey wouldn’t have an 8.5 yards-per-return average. Scott Blair wouldn’t have been 15-for-17 last year on field-goal tries and Poole wouldn’t have averaged 39.5 yards per punt prior to his knee injury.
I’d say the kickoff return unit probably needs to be coached better and its players need to execute better. Other than that, it’s hard to know what to do. Laskey brain cramped at the absolute wrong moment, but he’d been doing pretty well up to that point this season. Poole and Scully have the leg (not the same one) but are having all kinds of consistency problems. And that’s it (although that’s a lot). If they were kicking with reasonable consistency, special teams wouldn’t be an issue. (I realize that saying if Tech’s kickers were better, then the special teams would be better, is a bit dippy. But that’s what it is.)
Their ability to perform consistently ultimately falls on Johnson – he gave them scholarships and is responsible for their coaching. Perhaps it’d be better if a coach were with them all the time refining technique, but as I mentioned earlier, that approach has helped Wake Forest be .5 yards worse at punt net and it’s the exact opposite methodology of the coaching staff with traditionally the best special teams units (Virginia Tech).
And I’m going to guess that Laskey knew to not field a bouncing punt. After Miami scored, he came to the sideline, Johnson said, owned his mistake and said he didn’t know why he tried to field it. But I’m not sure if having a full-time special-teams coach telling him a few more times to not field a bouncing punt than he’d already been told would have prevented that. It was a bad mistake by a true freshman, and maybe that’s the extent of it.
Further, having a full-time special teams coach would take away one position coach from the offense (Tech’s staff has five offensive assistants and four defensive) and I’m not sure anyone at this point is going to say the offense needs less coaching.
I realize I’m only addressing this year’s issues. I get the sense that special teams hasn’t, at the least, been a great strength. I’m not sure how I feel about essentially agreeing with Johnson on this. (Perhaps this would make Johnson a little uneasy, also.) Ultimately, he’s responsible for special teams. He’s responsible for the coaching and the players he’s putting on the field who, to this point, are underperforming.
I’d have to think that the coaching can somehow be better, perhaps on the visualization and confidence-building side, as that’s where so much of kicking is, and if that’s the case, then that’s Johnson responsibility. I have little doubt that the specialists are killing themselves trying to be more consistent, but maybe they’re just not having very good seasons. It happens sometimes. I will bet that Johnson will spend a lot of time in the offseason trying to figure out how to improve the unit. But I don’t know that a full-time special teams coach is the solution.

Special teams at their best, say, in the NFL, have an air of being boring and routine. (Hence CPJs fake punts and FGs).
The Jackets have made just enough mistakes so that when they take the field on special teams they’re a bit juiced, a bit worrisome, a bit tense. This leads to mistakes.
Part of Devin Hester’s thing is that he gets the opposing special team wondering and fearful. When he sets to return a kick you can visibly see the other team taking a deep breath. His reputation helps him score almost as much as his speed.
It’s a mental thing for the Jackets across the board, anyone who’s knows a lick of football can see that. Let’s hope being at BDS will prove to be the change they need.

Special teams play needs to be a bit boring and routine, you see that in the NFL. It’s probably why the Jackets reportedly do STs well in practice.
However, the Jackets have made just enough mistakes on special teams to make them fearful and juiced up when they take the field.
You see this when Devin Hester sets to return a kick, the other team visibly takes a deep breath. When you’ve lost the game mentally, well, then- good luck.
Across the board the Jackets problems are mental ones. Let’s hope the return to BDS will prove to be the change they need.

I guess the Miami fiasco qualifies as “ugly”. But really, this Clemson game could get really, really ugly early. A turnover, a shanked punt giving Clemson a short field and this thing could get totally out of hand. I would hate to see a majority Orange stadium early into the second half, kind of like the LSU Chick Fill A game at the Georgia Dome several years ago, but it could happen. We need better athletes. That’s it.

…Watkins is usually the deep back on kickoff for Clemson…but, the 2 deep guys also line up in an “I” formation tandam, so trying to kick “away” from the deep back does not work, unless the kicker is really good a kicking it high and deep toward the sideline without kicking it out of bounds.

The problem with special teams is not the need for a “Special Teams Coach”, but the need for Johnson to make changes in this staff!! This is a weak staff with many being Johnson’s friends from years past. He needs to realize that in order to reach the brass ring, he needs a staff that can actually recruit true D-1 talent, and can coach competitively with other ACC and SEC staffs. We simply do not have that now! If staffs were race cars, Saban would be driving a Indy car, and Paul would be showing up with a 76 Gremlin! Everyone needs to focus on staff, not special teams coach!!

Here’s a novel idea. Lets kick every kick onsides. If we get say 2 out of say 6 we at least earn extra possessions. Given Clemson’s explosive offense they are going to score everytime they get it anyways so lets limit the possessions. Also don’t punt. Heck when you only punt it 5 yards you really aren’t gaining an advantage anyways.

Not sure that our primary problem this week will be special teams. We have to contain the big play – man, they have some weapons on offense. Also, we have GOT to find a way to get the ball in the hands of our playmakers – Smith and Hill. If we don’t do those two things, the game might get a bit ugly.
Still, I am pulling hard as always. GO JACKETS!!!

Ken, love the double take on the word “mishit”. At first I thought you intended to say something different than mis-hit.
Interesting concept on the onside kick strategy.
I have often thought that if we are in a battle like the FSU game where both teams are scoring TD’s left and right, then we should develop a “GO FOR TWO” strategy every time we score a TD. If we succeed greater than 50% then the opponent is forced to score more times than us.

5150 who is UGA? Are they relevant in football anymore? Anyway, on that game UGA 35 GT 3. GT sucks get rid of CPJ and his arrogance! Send Groh to the pasture. CPJ has doomed GT to irrelevance. No coaching, no players, no winning against good teams! 0-3 in bowls, 1-2 against UGA. Soon to be 0-4 and 1-3. Why wait, maybe you think this unstoppable offense will get it together? Hey there is another 1 yard run by Sims on 1st and 2nd down or an interception by TW on 1st 2nd or 3rd down! What a joke this offense has become! High School is complement for this offense!

What Tech needs is better players not pixie dust or coaching. FSU has excellent ST because they have excellent players. Most colleges use 2nd & 3rd string players (some walk-ons) to man their ST. FSU has more talented players so the 2nd & 3rd string guys are still very good players waiting their turn to become 1st teamers.
It ani’t rocket science…………………………….

Give me a break. Laskey’s been a mental case all year. As early as the UNC game everyone around me was yelling at him to simply fair catch the ball and have done with it. Bobbles, hesitations, muffs. At least find someone who can raise his arm and then catch a ball.
Kick defense is horrible. Seems like very time we kick off, the other guys start somewhere between their 40 and our 40. Either it’s a short kick or a long return.
Mistakes in blocking, bad tackling – it may be lack of depth/size, but it looks like bad coaching too.
CPJ was very upset we scored ‘too soon’ near halftime against Miami – he knew what was coming and sure enough, long return, short field and TD by Canes…turned the game back around. Momentum lost.
Special teams are 20% of the game – don’t they deserve 20% of the personnel and coaching?

Here is the real deal about special teams. As much as I hate beamer, he is correct. A special team coach will have nothing to do with the performance of a kicker, kick-off specialist, or punter, UNLESS he was in fact one of those himself. It would be the same thing as having a golf, tennis, pitching, hitting, etc…coach that had never done any of those things. For any of them to be helped with consistency/technique, you need a person who can actually see the small details that are off.
However a special team coach (whether dedicated, or shared) could develop a more organized practice session for the kickers/punters/snappers…..having them chart kicks/punts/snaps (hangtimes/distance) while practicing away from the team. They could also manage the # of kicks per session (do not want to get leg tired), practice game situations (no timeouts and less than 15 seconds on clock, etc..). All of this could be done with a dedicated coach, or outlined by a shared coach and given to his group to chart themselves while he is coaching his other position during practice.
The other part of special team coaching is film analysis, scheme setting, and who will be on punt/FG/kickoff/teams. That can also be done with a shared coach or a dedicated coach.
In the end, a dedicated special team coach will NOT improve consistency of a kicker/punter/snapper/return person. Just like any other position, it is up to the player to practice (mostly on their own) to improve their performance/consistency, which sometimes can just be maturing and gaining confidence in themselves.

Ken – Great article with good stats.
When your starters are young, your special teamers are even younger.
Tuberville said on 790AM this week “players win games” Unless we can pick up several kickers off of the waiver wire, we have what we have until next year.
Urban Meyer made a dig at Clemson last Saturday when it was mentioned that Clemson’s last ACC Championship was in 1991. “With this atmosphere and these recruits, they should be in a BCS Bowl at least evry other year”.

Tampa, if you had had to open a calc book for an answer while on the job, then whatever calc course you might have taken wouldn’t have been worth much. Calc is not so much a tool for doing things as it is a foundational thing, if that makes any sense. I don’t think I ever actually used calculus on a job, but I probably couldn’t have gotten the job done without having an understanding of it.

Since CPJ is coaching the kickers and punters, the answer may be to recruit deaf kickers so they don’t have to listen to CPJ. The next objective will be to teach them not to look at CPJ so they won’t see the stink eye. A lot of kicking and punting is between the ears and CPJ does a better job of screwing things up between the ears than most other coaches. NFL coaches are generally good at moving on to the next challenge when a kicker or punter fails. Most of the elite college coaches are also pretty good at avoiding being the cause of problems between the ears for kickers and punters. CPJ has thrown his kickers and punters under the bus and backed up to make sure he hit them. He’s not exactly from the “Bobby Cox I’ve Got My Players’ Backs” school of thinking. My impression is that he hands out responsibility freely and when he accepts it, he sounds disingenuous to me.
Kickers and punters need to have instant amnesia. But so do their coaches.

Tech, in order to win any of its remaining games, must realize that it is not as potent offensively as it has been in the past 2-3 years and thus MUST stop the special teams miscues. This team
gives up kickoff returns to the 40 yard line ( on average). One reason is that our kicker never kicks beyond the 10 yard line. This must end.

Well gt basically controls their own destiny cause uva won’t win at fsu at maryland and vt at home. So if gt can win out, they will make the champ game. It’s possible with both big games at home.

ga tech couldnt beat these two bad acc teams teams what makes youthink they can beat clemson whos team is a pretty good acc team. fla st could lose to virgina but tech winning out has no chance. only game you guys might win is the duke game

tech doesnt have near as many good players on the roster like virgina and mia do. tech is fielding a team made up of mostly div 1aa players that have no chance of hanging with the clemson and the va tech’s of the college football world

Hahahaha,….every last one of you are hypocrites. If a UGA, VT, UNC or any player from any other school took a cheap shot on a GT player, you would cry and call them classless thugs. But since a GT player committed the cheap shot you come back with excuses like, “oh every team does it” and “the VT players should have been flagged for sticking up with themselves”. Wow you guys are the scum of the earth. Have fun continuing to be mediocre.

Wonder why they don’t go camp out in Hollywood where the really rich people are they claim to distrust. In fact the Hollywood and media elite are some of the wealthiest people in this country, and they get paid millions that they never turn around and share with anybody.

Nice article on special teams. Check Wulfeck’s stats against Virginia Tech and UNC. He also held TJ Grahm of NC State to 0 punt return yards Maybe the Wake Forest system is working.
