Finch ‘probably out’ for Clemson

Georgia Tech center Jay Finch will likely miss the Yellow Jackets’ Saturday night game against Clemson with a lower leg injury. Coach Paul Johnson said Finch is “probably out” for the game after Wednesday’s practice.

Finch sustained the injury on Tech’s first play from scrimmage in last week’s loss to Miami. He was replaced by Nick McRae, who will likely be Finch’s replacement again Saturday. It will be no small challenge. One of the Tigers’ defensive tackles, Brandon Thompson, could be the first player at his position taken in the NFL draft.

“I think [Finch's injury] affected them a great deal” in the Miami game, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Wednesday. “This is a guy that took all the reps, first-team guy all week and all of the sudden you get in there early like that and you lose kind of your key guy.”

Jay Finch was the original subject here. But then we got talking about how short passes could improve our offense. I respect that opinion, but this year Clemson is bigger, stronger, and seemingly just as fast as we are. How you going to beat that?

I took a 1-week course in bass fishing at Kennesaw State in the ‘80 taught by Roland Martin and Larry Nixon. Larry put a cap across the room and casted into it 5 straight times. I have 2 small notebooks full of stuff in my tackle box. After 4 subsequent years of experimentation I confirmed my earlier findings that there are no largemouth bass in Lake Lanier.

Limit possessions. Simple as that.

You guys will need some alien death marches on Saturday night. If you can couple that with some classic one or two play TD drives, you will be successul and singing the fight song with the band after the game.

BankerDawg – 3 thoughts come to mind when I read your post.
1.
First, you say the 5/7 was nice, but with a pick involved. But the pick was on a play that you saw as favorable, not me. I would have thrown a pass similar to the next 7. And all that should’ve, could’ve, “was wide open” makes no difference. He didn’t make the pass because he really CAN’T make that pass at this point (he made them in games that were 35-7, etc – much different). I agree that it was a good play. But, call it later in the drive or game after you have thrown a few shorter passes and TW has settled down and got some confidence. Then, he might make that pass. Plus, if you throw it from the 50, and they intercept it, the damage is not nearly as bad.
2.
On a night when you avg 2.8 yards per rush, those 5 of 7 for 63 yards (9 yards per attempt) look MIGHTY dang good! It wasn’t the percentage that I was necessarily pointing out. It was the productivity you get per play compared to what they were getting with the running plays. Double the number of passes in that same span and how much better does it look. And, it would have made it much easier to run. We have to also throw those passes faster. Whoever is coaching TW has him going through too many mechanics and steps to setup for a pass. Fake, the handoff or toss, straighten and hit a receiver. It is that simple. Other teams do it EXACTLY like that. And don’t say, “we aint other teams” because that is what CPJ said about STs.
3.
I agree about Hill. I can’t understand how we’re not finding a way to get the ball into his and Smith’s hand 20-25 times a game combined. I understand the offense and how it works (been following CPJ for 25 years), but when you are talent strapped and can’t move the football, throw caution to the wind and get it to your playmakers. I didn’t invent that, I promise you that.

Tech will play Clemson close and win in the final minutes or OT. They are my team. I will pull for them regardless of those that doubt.

dawgfan….my sister-in-law has a cousin that is on the UGA bass fishing team….I will admit that I was poking a bit of fun at ya’ll in my comments….UGA is not the only school that offers this program now… it started in the southeast, but is spreading to other areas….my nephew works for what was CNNSI when Ted Turner owned it and he told me they just had a tournament for college sponsored bass fishing teams at Penn State this past weekend….you can check it out I’m sure….I still think it’s a heckuva way to spend our tax dollars

Buddy– Last one before I hit the hay and get ready to depart for Jacksonville in the morning.

All of those stats are in hindsight.

The pass was there, for a big gain on the very first play of the game, before any of those stats had mainfested themselves. Bottom line. He hits it and it goes. Orwin is a playmaker and it was a good call.

Pass completions in CPJs scheme are killers…that’s the way they are designed. You say you have followed him for a while, so you know this to be true.

I would argue if TW pitches the ball to the outside more than he did, we are not having this discussion. Those plays were there…TW just didn’t have the confidence to make them. That’s the problem, not the lack of short passes.

As I said earlier, we will see come Saturday night if Tech decides to block and execute the plays that are called. If so, you win…if not, you will lose again.

All of this has the caveat that your special teams has to be MUCH better than the Miami game…that is what really cost you, imo.

Golden Tornado – Sorry about getting off of the original topic.

About your question concerning how can we beat Clemson. Honestly, it’s now too late to be good at the things we need to do to beat them (unless they completely self destruct). We need one more facet to our offense to beat ANYBODY any time. Clemson will pretty much do to us what Iowa, LSU, and Miami did – shut us down because we have nothing to go to when they are crashing linebackers. you can’t have 8 people crashing the LOS and not have an opening somewhere behind them that a receiver can find. It just aint possible. The way to beat speed is make them beat themselves with their speed. Throw it where they came from and that will slow them down. When they slow down, run it. When they crash to stop the run, throw it. I know it’s harder than that, but our solution has been, when they crash to stop the run, run it again, when they stop it, run it again, when they stop it, run it again, when they stop it, run it again, and so on until you end the game with a 2.8 YPC avg running the football. Makes no sense to me. You can only beat your head into a wall so many times before you realize the wall aint moving. Well, most people, that is.

Bankerdawg, as 19 so astutely noted, the post at 8:50PM was NOT by me, but by some little girl who poses as me periodically. If Delbert D. is still here, he can confirm that. I would NEVER say anything as stupid and defeatist as what that troll said. Right, Delbert D20?

As one of the many that did not make it in the engineering program, let me illustrate the difference in core requirements at Tech and UGA. I eventually got out (that’s graduated for the non-Tech bloggers) with a degree in Psychology. Yes, there are other schools at Tech besides Engineering and Management. I had a friend that was attending UGA (Yes, Dawgs and Bees can get along any day but the Saturday after Thanksgiving) at the time, also majoring in Psychology. We compared our core classes. The English and Social Studies requirements were about the same. It’s when we got to the Math and Science requirements that there was a difference.

UGA Math and Science Requirements for Pschology at the time:
Math – One year (full disclosure – I don’t remember if it was Calculus and/or Statistics. I think it
was Calculus.)
Science – One year of either Chemistry, Biology, OR Physics

GT Math and Science Requirements for Pschology at the time:
Math – 5 quarters of Calculus and 1 quarter of Statistics(We were on the quarter system back
then. 3 quarters = 1 year (the 4th quarter was summer break if you elected)
That’s 2 years of Math, not counting the major specific Psychological Statistics.
Science – 3 quarters of Biology (one year), 3 quarters of Physics (one year), AND 2 quarters of
Chemistry (2/3 of a year). Thats 2 2/3 years of science.
On top of that, we had to have 5 quarters of Management and/or Engineering electives (3 from
one and 2 from the other)

So to summarize, Tech required 2x the math and almost 3x the science as UGA for the same non-engineering major!

Take it for what it is worth, but kerryb is wrong about the core classes being the same just because both schools are in the University system of Georgia.

Ok BankerDawg, my last one (to you) too. You say my stats are in hindsight, but what about the stats from the previous 2 games? 7-27 for 60 yards. Evidence right there that TW had lost all his confidence. And CPJ even said after the UVA game that we had to let him throw some easier, high percentage passes. So, my thoughts are coming from the same thoughts that CPJ had (and the stats from the previous 2 games).

you can’t deny this fact. That pass was intercepted. The passes he threw that were about 5-7 yards (actual pass distance) were completed. So, ok, it is hindsight. We have that hindsight now. Let’s see if CPJ uses that knowledge now. Or will he still go for the 1 in 20 shot at a TD pass. I have my guess, but who knows.

I just looked at the current Math and Science requirements for Psychology at both schools.

UGA – One year of math
One year of science (one semester Biological and one semester Physical)

GT – One year of Calculus
One year of Biology
One year of Physics and/or Chemistry (2 semesters of one or 1 semester of each)

So, it is a little closer now than it was in the 90’s, but that is still 2x the science, and the math at Tech is Calculus.

Back to the subject of football. As everything else, I hope for the best, but fear for the worst. I will be there Saturday night anyway yelling my loudest! I just hope it is cheers and not $%%#$##.
