Greetings-
Have a couple notes from a few interviews Tuesday.
1. Both Paul Johnson and assistant coach Brian Bohannon took questions about backup quarterback Synjyn Days and their answers provided enough evidence to conclude that his ball security problems still require considerable improvement.
“Synjyn has to take care of the football,” Bohannon said. “It has to be of the utmost urgency when he is in the game, to take care of the football.”
I think I included some of this answer in the post Tuesday following Johnson’s news conference, but Johnson said he put Days in late in the loss to Miami to see if he could provide a spark. He got a first down on a pass to wide receiver Tyler Melton and had a quarterback draw that could have been a gainer had it been blocked better and then fumbled.
“That’s been his thing,” Johnson said. “If he takes care of the ball, he’s going to play more. Synjyn, he’s a talented kid. He can do some things, but you’ve got to take care of the ball.”
2. Quote from Johnson about the offense: “You could say execution, you can say whatever you want. It doesn’t matter what you do on offense, if you’re not moving the ball and scoring, it usually comes back to (the fact that) you’ve got to do that better. We need to help ‘em, maybe, with a better plan. Maybe some of the stuff that we’re trying to ask them to do, they can’t do.”
Roddy Jones thinks the offense isn’t too far from re-gaining its form.
“When we go back and watch the film, it’s not like everything’s going wrong and we’re all falling apart,” he said. “You see a stop in the backfield or a play by [an opponent], what you don’t see is everyone else did their job. If we get that one guy, we’re out of the gate. It’s just the little things we need to correct, and I think we’ll do that.”
I imagine you get tired of the “we just need to execute better” answer as I do, but I’ve seen the offense work enough times to great effect (and you have done so even more, I suppose) to think that the problem isn’t that opponents have figured out the offense. It’s poor decision making, missed blocks, bad throws, dropped passes and faulty play calls. That leaves room to say that those failures are a result of a talent shortage and that the Jackets wouldn’t have those problems with better coaching. Perhaps the remainder of the season will determine that if you haven’t already drawn your own conclusion. But consider that as poorly as last season went, the offense, with a lot of the same pieces as this year’s team, led the nation in rushing. (Which is a different thing than leading the nation in scoring, or wins, for that matter, but is not an accomplishment to be taken lightly.)
Take Washington as an example. He’s shown the ability make the right reads, both this year and last, and has enough speed to make plays. I don’t know how you’ll receive this, but I’ve included a clip of the second half of last year’s Virginia Tech game. Watch from about the 4:30 point on. Washington has some clunker plays, but he hits downfield passes, makes a first-down run out of nothing, manages the clock and leads Tech nearly the length of the field in two late-game drives. The very last play, you’ll remember, was not one to remember, but everything to that point would indicate that when he’s right, he’s more than capable.
I think right now a lot of it’s between his ears. Perhaps the same might be said of his teammates. How do they escape this predicament? That’s for them and the coaching staff to figure out.
3. A few people asked me about the offsetting penalties that wiped out Jones’ long first-quarter run against Miami, specifically if Tech could have declined Miami’s penalty and taken the facemask penalty against Jones as a spot foul. I asked Doug Rhoads, the ACC officiating coordinator, and he said no, that they were automatically offsetting because both were live- ball fouls. So, there’s your answer.
4. This is sort of random, but I’m wondering if someone out there can do a former Tech player a favor. You might remember I wrote a story prior to the Virginia game about the 1990 team’s comeback win at Virginia. Anyway, Calvin Tiggle was one of the former players I talked to, and I asked him about watching replays, and he said he’d lost his copy of the game. (He was one of Tech’s biggest stars that day.) He asked me if I had any idea how to get a copy of the game and I said I’d look into it. My first step failed. You are the second step. Would any of you have a copy of that game you’d be willing to make a copy of? E-mail me if so. I imagine Calvin would be grateful. ksugiura@ajc.com.

go online-that’s where i found mine, several sites……….if a team with good players have a month, you stop this “O” if the QB can’t complete passes(X2)-another factor not mentioned-the long view-USAF D saw this O often, QB doesn’t hit passes, doesn’t work……..EVERY ACC team we play now has players who are upper classmen who have seen this offense before! getting more experience will help us, but more formations, shot-gun, spread, pistol, whatever are needeD! we need to complete passes when we throw! this is not rocket science, it is not even remotely as hard as what i do…..

@Fields- UGAG is 2 points higher at a 79- don’t start bragging too much-you all use the SEC logic of 2-5 SEC team would be 7-0 in the ACC-the same holds true from the academic side ACC vs SEC a 77 in the ACC would be a 97 in the SEC- see how that works-

For avg golfers, there are days when you hit your T-ball well and then a slight change in grip, stance or swing plane and you’re spraying them all over the place. THat’s where Tech is. With less competition (wide open fairways), mishits didn’t show as bad. Tech’s O requires a lot of man-on-man excution with open field blocks and perhaps because of better opposition, we’re not executing as well. There has been a step change in performance for TW & as Ken states, a lot is probably in his head. As many have harped upon, short passes to get a little confidence will go a long way. In the MTSU game, we had 7 passes in a row. CPJ does need to open up the playbook a little–we seem to panic and go back to our bread & butter plays which it seems the opposing D is waiting for. Our D has improved, special teams need to execute better in mind and body and we’ll be OK. Doubt we can pull off a W Sat, but we can give’em a good game and who knows how it may turn out.

I’m still puzzled by Chris Jackson. He was highly recruited out of HS. I know that at the first of the year it was said that he got a late start, but by now he should be well oiled in the offense. Seems like if you put him opposite Hill you would have two pretty good receivers on the field.

Folks, you knew the graduation rate comments would start coming from the woofers. I was trying to get a definition on how the GSR is calculated but the ncaa site is not clear. Is the rate based on graduating in 4 years, or for those leaving early, in good standing and progressing towards that goal?
Ken, do you know? We always seem to have these poor rates, and there isn’t much of an excuse, especially for the bball team rates that are very low. But how do they compare to the rest of the student body? I remember the freshman orientation when they said look to your left, look to your right, one of you will not be here in 4 years.

Speaking of coming out of high school, this is what Scout had to say about Tevin “A pass first quarterback with excellent mobility, Washington uses his elusiveness to scan downfield first, then to take off and run second. He has a quick release and is accurate on the short and intermediate routes. He has nice touch on the long ball, but struggles just a bit if he has to muscle up on a deep out. Deceptively fast, he’s not a shake and bake type of runner, but possesses tremendous open field speed. Oops. What happened?

The big point there is this: “but struggles just a bit if he has to muscle up on a deep out.” What do you think nearly all of our pass plays are?

Tevin needs a confidence boost we all know. Instead of starting him off with a mid range pass over the middle, CPJ should stick to the WR screen as he does sometimes to Melton (give Greene a touch for cripes sake). Heck even a shovel pass would be better than going downfield right now.
I’m not a big fan of razzle dazzle, but how about lining Sims up for a toss sweep and have him pull up and toss it downfield to a streaking WR. Not holding my breath on that one but CPJ’s creativity so far has only shown a Hill reverse play. This is the game to reach into the bag.

I still wonder why we don’t hit more crossing routes across the middle. If the linebackers are playing up to stop the run, that should leave space 5-10 yards in front of the los.

Seems to me that the offense became similarly stale when Nesbit decided he needed to “carry the load” and you can see when Washington entered this game it removed that tendency and opened up the offense more and made it more productive despite Joshua’s loss. Tevin needs the confidence to use his supporting cast.

Back to the topic at hand, ball security has been a problem with Synjyn. Where’s the stick ‘em when you need it? I think we should run more triple option (not kidding). There were several times in the miami game where TW could have pitched it for a big gain. Same thing in a couple of previous games. They are forcing him to the outside, but the defensive back is cheating inside to help limit the qb run.

Ken, you are the man. Thanks for answering the Synjyn Days questions I posted.
I still think Synjyn is more dangerous as a runner than Tevin, and Synjyn threw passes with confidence, unlike Tevin.
I was on the Tevin bandwagon for the 1st 4 games. Then became a Tevin apologist for the next 2. But the last two have shown me he is a mental case. The talent is obviously there, but mentally he’s not there. A platoon might be good, especially if the defenses are making the QB keep the ball.

I agree with JD (shorter passes across the middle) and Cosmo (32+carries for QB causes fatigue…fatigue causes (even more poor judgement). However, many Tech fans and evidently Johnson still believe that the (threat) of the long pass is the answer…even though Washington seems ill prepared to accomplish that. Remember if Johnson needs the equivalent yardage that a short pass can usually accomplished, he will run the ball.
Question: If Days is presently the 2nd string QB and he is presently in the Johnson doghouse for ball insecurity, then the real 2nd string QB is ???

Synjyn’s fumble against Miami was more due to a vicious hit whereby he was injured rather than sloppy play. In fact, if you review the play, there could have very easily have been called a personal foul against Miami; there sure would have been one against GA Tech if that was Tyrod Taylor. People also tend to forget that when Tevin Washington came in after Joshua Nesbitt was injured, he had quite a few fumbles, yet he stayed in the game and those fumbles were taken care of through repetitions. Given the same opportunity, I have no doubt that Mr. days would be just as successful. I would also suggest that the passing game couldn’t get any worse putting Synjyn in either. Besides not completing passes, Tevin has also been throwing interceptions recently.
I would finally add that Synjyn would be getting snaps against a team in a real competitive environment while we have an experienced QB available to sub for him in the event he falls flat on his face. This is a luxury the team hasn’t had since Jaybo Shaw transferred.

Regarding the statistics on graduation rates, I work in an industry that uses performance indicators to measure every aspect of performance from every conceivable angle. I can tell you from years of experience, it is absolute lunacy to attempt to draw conclusions purely from the numbers, regardless of how well the indicator is designed. Rates and percentages are an indication, but to understand the performance, you ALWAYS have to dig deeper to understand WHY the numbers are what they are. Simply telling me that GT’s grad rate among athletes is 77% and UGA’s is 79% is MEANINGLESS by itself. It’s a STARTING POINT for understanding the performance of the student athletes and the athletic departments’ performance in this area. You have to ask a number of other questions, such as “how do the graduation rates compare with non-athletes in the same majors?,” “What majors are they taking?”
In the article, it said that if an athlete leaves the program and goes into the NBA or the NFL, it doesn’t count against the graduation rate AS LONG AS THE STUDENT IS IN GOOD STANDING WHEN HE LEAVES. So, if a kid is a junior and he knows that he’s going to declare for the draft, and he blows off his last semester and leaves on academic probation, is that a valid hit against the program?
Then, it doesn’t help when (to sell papers or to sensationalize the story to get attention), the media features a headline that says something to the effect that UGA is in the middle of the pack of the SEC and GT is last in the ACC and when you read it you find that they’re actually 2 percent points (probably within the accuracy range of the rate) of each other. I don’t think it’s stretching the term to call that “yellow journalism.”

Facts GT since Dodd left winning percenage .539 , conference titles 1 , top ten finishes 2 , major bowls 2, same number of 1 win seasons as 10 win seasons. UGa has more top 10 finishes in the past 10 years than tech has since dodd left, Tech football tradition is ancient history. georia 2 bcs bowl wins ties the entire ACC . 12 wins vs UGa since dodd left. 15 since 1957. Jeff Greene doesn’t have a catch yet. I confess I’m a little surprised by that. lately, there haven’t been a lot of catches to spread around, though.
I don’t know what to say about Chris Jackson. I think he’s just got better players ahead of him.
GSR is graduation rate after six years of athletes who entered college between 2001 and 2004. Tech’s rates for men’s basketball and football are embarrassingly low. This sounds like it comes from the PR folks, but I’m pretty confident that when Brian Gregory and Paul Johnson’s recruits are accounted for in a few years, the rates will be highly competitive.
Jacket Man – As I understand it, I think the problem is that Days has trouble holding onto it during practice, not just in games.
Shorter passes – Days is still the backup. I think coaches want to give him more of a shot but feel like it’s too big a risk.

Big challenge for the good guys this weekend. Still, I’m not scratching an “L” on the wall just yet. This game will be a good indicator of our team going forward this year and likely next. If we keep fighting and clawing, maybe we’ll have something here.
Real tired of the “better execution” meme that permeates too many Tech coaching responses. If the team you have has a tough time executing your plays, at some point you need to give them different plays to try. Not saying to ditch the TO (I love watching it when things are clicking), but you work with what you have, not what you want…..

Graduation rates are meaningless unless put in to context. If you aren’t comparing athlete graduation rates to overall student graduation rates at each school, then you are comparing apples to oranges. I don’t have the stats, but I’d be willing to bet money that Georgia Tech has a lower overall student graduation rate than any of the other schools mentioned, with the possible exception of Duke. Tech is a tough, tough school, and if regular students have a hard time graduating, then athletes will, too. Add to that that unlike a lot of schools, Tech aims to educate its students, not graduate them. You don’t get coddled, you don’t get professors adding points to your grades because they feel bad for you and want you to graduate. If you can’t cut it, you get cut, as it should be everywhere (but rarely is). And while athletes at Tech get a lot of extra tutoring and assistance, it’s still plenty tough to get through a lot of those classes.

Like an avg golfer, some days you hit the T-ball well and then a subtle grip or stance change and you’re spraying them everywhere. Tech’s O is off a bit but a subtle tweak is mostly needed. We got by with this early with poor competition—e.g. wide open fairways where our mis-hits weren’t so glaringly obvious. The only “step change” has been TW. He’s really off and as Ken opined it’s probably between his ears. CPJ needs to open it up a bit on Sat—pass more on 1st down, throw short passes, shuttle pass, heck legal forward laterals will work, just to get TW a little more confident. The D has improved—special teams needs better execution in thought and deed and we should be OK. Let’s be tough at home—I’ll take an L at Duke in trade for a perfect record at home.

Tevin had 4 great games against 4 garbage teams. But you heralded him against those teams as the next Tim Tebow basically. If was so good, then he should be used as AN EXCUSE last year. UGA lost to UF in 2005 with a backup QB (Joe Tereshinski) and but for a phantom flag at the goal line, still would have won. You hardly ever see that mentioned on a UGA blog though, but you bring up Nesbitt ALL THE TIME. 1-9 is worse than our 2-8, either way both are bad. Difference is, I bet UGA turns the series around on UF before GT does against UGA.

Tampa: “I bet UGA turns the series around on UF before GT does against UGA.” Useless opinionated info.
Tampa: “GT’s wins are against schools that are about the equivalent of an FCS conference. I’ll take bottom teir SEC schools versus Maryland, MTSU, WCU, KU and NCSU all day long and the rest of the country would too.” Useless opinionated info.
Tampa: “I would take Miss State over every game GT has played thus far so start there for UGA. UT would beat your enitre schedule minus Clemson and VT.” Useless opinionated info.

If Georgia Tech is what the NCAA is trying to stop, we are all in trouble. I can’t imagine the state of Georgia without Tech. Lord it is running on IQ empty as it is. How many violations did the investigator drive by from Kansas or whereever these chumps come from to catch that 400 dollar violation. Hell the flight over to Atlanta cost more than the crime committed and Tech had a losing football team last year. I think the secret to catching violators is to look at the ones winning, not the one handicapping themselves to bring some similes of a college student into the program.

49 – Miss St
But the interesting thing about this link is that two of your in conference wins were against NC State and Maryland.
Schools ranked higher than NC State and Maryland:
56 – Ga Southern
57 – Wofford

I think the funniest thing on a blog is allegedly grown ups sitting on here talking smack about mostly 18-22 year old college students being smart or dumb (while having more grammatical and spelling errors than in a Mike Tyson essay), basically beating their chest about one school being smarter than the other. Fact is, neither is so much greater than the other that in a down economy the receipt .. err .. degree given at the end of the program is going to guarantee success.

October 26th, 2011
6:21 pm
Someone was asking earlier this week why Tech couldn’t recruit any better than they do. Let me tell you why. The first reason is that the ACC is a weak football conference. Sure they have a team that rises up from time to time, but year in and year out the ACC is weak. Last year ESPN’S Reese Davis said ACC stood for the Awful coast conference. When Tech won the ACC a few years ago and played Clemson in the ACC championship game, both teams lost to middle of the road UGA and South Carolina. The next reason is there is no fan support. Why would a top recruit want to come to tech and play in front of 30,000, with exception to Clemson and Fla State, when he can go to the SEC or Big 10 and play in front of 90 to a 100,000 every week. The ACC can’t even fill half a stadium for it’s Champioship Game. The triple option is another reason. The triple option is a thing of the past. Do you remember when everyone use to run the option. The reason everyone stopped running it is because Bear Bryant stopped it. You will never get a top rated quarterback or receiver running the triple option. Paul Johnson has said several times that we are not in the top in recruiting because we don’t recruit like other schools do. Well CPJ you still have to play defense, and I don’t think that has anything to do with recruiting players on offense. I think CPJ is realizing after seeing his offense, which many high schools run, over the past few years that teams are starting to catch on again. Teams have had a hard time stopping it for the past few years because they have never seen it, but now they are catching on. When Tech gets out of the ACC against quality opponenets they don’t fair so well. CPJ has yet to win a bowl game with his offense at Ga Tech. The triple option may win a weak ACC Championship, but never a National Championship. That’s why Tech can’t recruit.

If the ACC is so unattractive for recruiting, then why was last year’s recruiting class at Clemson one of the tops in the country, and why does FSU’s recruiting rank so high every year. You’re kidding yourself if you think that the number of fans at a game affects recruits. They want to play, and rightly or wrongly, they believe fans will come to see a good team, which they want to be a part of. The triple option is only PART of Johnson’s offense; it’s just the part that gets the most attention and (from ignorant mutts like you) the most derision. Regardless of the quality of the opposition, the offense I saw in the first few Tech games this season was far more exciting to watch than anything I have seen on TV. Nobody catches on to Johnson’s offense any more than they do any other offense. When ANY good offense operates with precision, nobody can stop it, no matter what kind of offense it is.. You are just stupid.

“The reason everyone stopped running it is because Bear Bryant stopped it.”
In the mid-eighties? Bryant retired in ‘82. Arkansas was still winning with the wishbone version in ‘85, and Nebraska ran their I-formation double option-with-designed-QB-run through the ’90s.

If the guy who blocked the punt had been able to keep his balance, he would have scored. He wasn’t brought down by anybody from UGA; he fell down. Georgia Tech fans knew all along this was supposed to be a rebuilding year. Losing to UVA was more or less a fluke. I expected to lose to Miami. I was stunned that we beat both UNC and NC State. You can never predict 100% how a game will turn out; that’s why they are played on the field and not on the blogs. Everybody outside of Athens knew that the mutts would lose to Boise State and USC, but anything COULD have happened—-it just didn’t. The rest of UGA’s schedule is as bad as Tech’s early schedule, and anything could happen in those games too. Johnson’s better recruits are still developing, hence the youth of the OL and key spots on defense. A few have left the program; Shaw, Luallen, and Wright. A few freshmen and rs freshmen are making some impact; Attaochu at LB and Nealy, who has started 4 games at LB, Mason at LG, Alford at OT. 4 sophs start on defense and 4 on offense. The reason CPJ runs the Triple Option is because that is the only offense his high school team ran when he played. Since he is one of only 4 D1 coaches that never played college ball, he goes with what he knows. He has no background past high school, therefore, a high school offense is what you get. And is not even a well exectued TO. The QB makes the wrong read too often.

Ken, you said coaches were afraid to put him in. seems to be a cop out to me. he brings much more upside than TW with much more big play ability. if we are behind and not moving the ball anyway, why not insert him? pulling him just hurts confidence. surely they know TW does not have the ability to compete against the big boys and make the plays needed. worth a shot at least, because we will lose to clem, va tech, and uga anyway

To Russ and atlxmen, whatever that is supposed to be. It appears that you two guys know more about offensive football than anyone else out there. Seems to me that UGA had its chances to stop the H.S. offense, not so much yet. Remember “run Roddy run”? Name me a high school in Ga that runs this offense. The closest I can come to is Statesboro, home of Ga. Southern. Who I might add is undefeated. Here’s the point they do not run this offense but run a pure wishbone, and never pitch the ball. The offense you mutts have not really controlled so far is a spread option. I see a variation of it every week in college its more and more common than you geniuses think. It,s very possible that both Ga. teams could end up with three losses by this weekend. Don’t get your hopes up that your vaunted offense will win against U.F. As long as Boo Boo is play calling I would not be so critical.

Ole Yeller you asked for one high school that runs the triple option so I’ll give you one, Flowery Branch. As you pointed out, there are several variations of the triple option. The one you mentioned, the wishbone, was perfected over time by Barry Switzer. There is also the veer and the more common triple option run out of the traditional I-formation. CPJ runs a variation using a fullback and two slot backs. Also, Urban Meyer along with Dan Mullen, perfected the spread option which you have also referred to.
UGA is better equipped than ever to handle the triple/spread option. The biggest deterrent to the option style offense is a corp of fast linebackers. And Georgia has the fastest LB’s in the league. New this year are Jarvis Jones and Alec Olgeltree. Mike Gillard has also come on strong due to his sensational speed. C. Washington came out of high school 6′4/225 and ran a 4.51 40. So I do believe we are well positioned to stop an antiquated high shcool offense that does not succeed in a fast league.

Being a Tech fan I consider them done for the year. They’ll be lucky to win a 7th game. Started out with a passing game and just went back to the old pop warner crap that an opposing team made up of monkeys could figure out how to stop. CPJ must go and take his little kiddy offense with him.

Hey Russ, they still have to play the game, don’t they. Flowery Branch does not run this offense. Triple options as you point out comes in a lot of different forms. Seems to me that discipline has more to do with stopping this offense than speed. Your team has no discipline. Also for someone so smart you need to learn how to spell school. As I stated you need to play the game before you can claim a win. You guys need to win against Fl. before pounding on your chest as world beaters.

ole yeller, I should learn to spell school. I pull for Ga. Tech, several nephews are grads. I do get frustrated by both GT and UGA. Sounds like you are a solid fan, good luck this w/e. Both teams are going to need a litttle luck.

Thanks Russ, a difference of opinion is healthy as long as it does not get into name calling.

I never post on a UGA blog…..have no desire to, but I do occasionally read some of them. My reason is to see if the average blogger on theirs’ is any more intelligent than the pin-head dawg homers that post here…to my surprise some are. “Atlxmen&Dorks” are basic outcasts of their own blog and are often belittled and chastised by their own (so-called) comrades.

I wish that they would give Preston Lyons a chance. Sims just falls forward like a quarterback at the goal line. Last week Lyons fought on two carries to get a first down. Looked good and then Sims came in again. It’s a shame

supersize..uga didnt stink it up that bad against boise st. just played a better and more experienced team at the time. give boise st credit for playing a good game more than uga stinking it up. uga played pretty well the first half and just ran out of gas in the 2nd. uga is still the toughest game boise st has played all year and uga is way better now than when they first played,
the south carolina game was a fluke with all the turnivers being costly.
but ga tech on the other hand is looking worse each week as the competetion gets harder. tech only has orwin smith on offense and hill every now again will do something when washington gets lucky. techs defense is just bad. you have two players maybe 3 that will move ont to the next level and thats it, hence the losses to a very bad virgina team and a ok mia team.
