Greetings-
Some notes from post-practice Tuesday. I’ll be back with more Wednesday morning.
1. Georgia Tech coaches are trying to mend what ails quarterback Tevin Washington.
Tech quarterbacks and B-backs coach Brian Bohannon said he has been working with Washington on his throwing technique, particularly his follow-through. Washington has been struggling with falling away rather than finishing throws.
After completing 64.3 percent of his passes in the Yellow Jackets’ first four games, Washington has completed 35.3 percent in the past four. He threw a critical interception on Tech’s first play of the game Saturday in the loss to Miami. The Jackets undoubtedly will need Washington to play more proficiently against undefeated Clemson (No. 5 in the BCS standings) Saturday. Bohannon said Washington’s mindset is good, but that “I’m sure there’s a little bit of him pressing. He knows what to do. Play within the offense and execute.”
Coach Paul Johnson defended Washington’s play at his Tuesday news conference.
“Clearly, he can play better, but the guys around him have to play better, too,” he said.
(Bohannon said Washington probably “juiced” that pass against Miami, that is to say, was a little amped. By the way, I know there’s been some chatter about Synjyn Days replacing Washington in the lineup. For reasons I’ll get into Wednesday, I don’t see it happening. It’s sink or swim with the young man from Wetumpka, Ala.)
2. In an attempt to right his team’s course, team captain Roddy Jones gave the team a pep talk Monday.
“I just told the guys to keep their heads up,” Jones said. “We’ve obviously had a tough stretch, but we still have a lot in front of us.”
The Jackets are on a two-game losing streak after starting out 6-0. Jones, an A-back, reminded teammates that they can still have a great season by winning the remainder of their games to finish 10-2.
“That’s a great year, but it starts with Clemson, so everyone has to be accountable for their jobs and take personal ownership of their job,” he said. “If we do that, we’ll be just fine.”
(I couldn’t fit this in, but he clarified that players weren’t discouraged, but he wanted to be proactive as he realizes the team is taking shots from all sides.)
3. There were 55 Tech athletes among about 340 from five schools who signed a petition urging the NCAA to give athletes a share of the hundreds of millions of dollars in television contract money that goes to schools and conferences, according to an Associated Press report. Denzel McCoy, who is unable to play due to a heart condition, helped lead the drive. Jones was a mildly enthusiastic signee.
“This is my last year playing, so it’s not like I’m getting a whole lot of [the money],” Jones said. “I just kind of shrugged my shoulders and went along with what’s best for the guys here now.”
Johnson said he supported the players. “I’m all for the players getting whatever they can get,” he said.
(I’m not sure what will come of this – perhaps not much – and it’s odd timing that news of a proposal for a $2,000 cost-of-attendance stipend broke on the same day. But it’d be kind of crazy if this came to pass and McCoy was part of the movement’s leadership.)
4. Johnson said that center Jay Finch’s lower-leg injury sustained last Saturday “is not nearly as bad as they thought.” Finch was on crutches Tuesday and did not practice. Backup center Nick McRae and Ray Beno, who rotates at tackle, have been taking snaps at center in practice.
Clemson running back Andre Ellington was listed as questionable Tuesday with a sprained ankle. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said he hoped Ellington would be ready to practice fully by Wednesday. Tigers tight end Dwayne Allen is nursing a turf toe injury and reportedly wore a walking boot Tuesday, but said he expects to play Saturday.
(Tech offensive lineman Morgan Bailey, who has been injured much of the year, is getting work at tackle. Clemson losing Ellington would be pretty significant. He zapped Tech for 155 yards last year and has speed on top of speed.)
5. At his news conference, Johnson said that Clemson is probably the most talented team he’ll have faced at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Asked if the game would be a track meet given Clemson’s speed, Johnson replied, “If we play (like we have) the last two weeks, it’ll be a one-sided track meet.”
At his news conference at Clemson, Swinney lobbed bouquets at Tech’s defense and coordinator Al Groh.
“They’re hard to move and they don’t give up a lot of big plays,” he said. “Their linebackers are rarely out of place and they tackle well. It’s a typical Al Groh-type of defense.”
(Kind of an interesting qualifier on Johnson’s statement. Perhaps in he was thinking of Iowa or LSU. In one of the times he complimented Maryland defensive tackle Joe Vellano after his 22-tackle game, he said he was probably the best player he’d coached against at Bobby Dodd.)

Ken,
If Tech wins the rest of their ACC games and Va Tech finishes with two or more conference losses, Miami has 3 or more losses, UVA has three or more. Can GT make it to the ACC Championship game?

Ken, you are awesome. thanks for asking CPJ about the Days substitution in the last game, read it in your other article.
My two cents: a platoon with days and tevin wouldn’t be a bad thing. Days is a way better athlete, and his two passes against Miami were thrown with authority, not tentative like Tevin’s. If they make the QB run, Days can make them pay. He is a Tyrod Taylor type runner. Scary for defenses.

wow, repairing throwing motion? Kid’s probably been a QB for 10-12 years. We’re in trouble if our QB needs repairs 8 games into the season.
Time for Days. If the QB is gonna keep 25 times a game, Days is the man, not Tevin.

More cash will just cause greater cheating. GT is already on PROBATION for cheating and then covering it up. Put more cash in the system and GT will go from 4 yrs. to 5 yrs to 6 yrs. etc, etc. on PROBATION. GT is and always has been a dirty program. Just an embarrassment to our Great State.

I used to think that student-athletes should only get room, board, tuition, etc. That was before I realized that the schools and conferences are complete hypocrites when it comes to amateurism and their educational mission. They have decided to chase the almighty dollar, change conferences in order to make more money and expand their marketing area, with no thought of the welfare of the “product” – the players. Heck – as the Ed O’Bannon case has shown, the NCAA even claims they own the rights to the players images even years after they have left school, The kids deserve a cut of the cash.

At the beginning of the year we all thought we were at least a year away from greatness. Vad Lee will have one year studying the offense under his belt, and every ESPN 150 player to come to GT is now in the NFL so he will be great. Orwin will be a Senior. Hill will be a Senior. Chris Jackson will have a year under him, same with Jeff Green. Sims has been a bruiser already and will likely add 10 more lbs of muscle. Our skill positions will be stacked. The defense is looking pretty good anyway, and the recruits are looking good especially if we keep Kallon – the line is the biggest/only problem. If we lose a few more games this season there will still be a tomorrow, but I think we have a few upsets in us. Go Jackets!

We MUST play 2 QBs ALL the time. Now that the defense locks down every other player, not even the vaunted Joshua Nesbit could handle that pressure. 50 to 60 hits a game! Washington is suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Pulling Vad Lee’s redshirt would be the dumbest thing to do, Marietta Buzz. We only have 4 regular season games left. Would we really waste a whole year of eligibility for Vad for 4 games??? He is still a freshman. He hasn’t even had a spring practice under his belt. I don’t think he would help us at this point. Next year he will compete during the spring and be twice as better next fall. Throwing him in during the last 4 games and burning a whole year of eligibility is stupid. People, stop with the whining asking CPJ to put Vad in. CPJ obviously knows best, which is why Vad is still on the sideline.

Ken – can you please remind the coaches that TW was 5-7 for 63 yards (9 yard average) after throwing the interception and until he was replaced. Including 3-3 for 37 yards on the only scoring drive (which means we got 37 yards from 3 passing plays and 55 from the other 17 running plays on that drive).
Also, remind him that the toss sweep avg’d 5.5 YPC.
If CPJ would have stuck to those plays (toss sweep and short, QUICK passes off the toss sweep play action) and sprinkled in some option, we would have fared MUCH better on offense.

GT Joe, are you serious?
So, by your logic, Chipper Jones should never have to go to his father for hitting advice, even though he’s been playing baseball for 30 years? Pro basketball players never need to practice their free throws if they occasionally lose their stroke? Pro golfers don’t ever lose their swing? Nah…But of course, a college quarterback shouldn’t need any coaching. He should have it all down pat by now…
Amazing.

CPJ really messed himself up by redshirting Lee. We should have played him a LOT in those pansy games we scheduled at the front of our season. He would have learned the offense and there still would have only been a small chance of losing to one of those teams. CPJ will end up losing his job because of saving Lee. We will end up about 7-6 this year and next year Lee will still be a freshman with no game experience so we will still go about 7-6. The team and Lee will be ready to kick some butt the next year, but the fans and admin will have grown impatient (after three ~.500 seasons in a row) by then and fire CPJ. But, CPJ has made his bed. If he plays him now, he will look like a REAL idiot. Besides, if he IS really great and can save the team, then he will leave after his JR year for the NFL anyway. No reason to redshirt skill players these days.

Any old GSU fans will remember 1987 when GSU had just one 2 NCs and had to replace Tracy Ham. GSU struggled through the first 4 games going 1-3. Coach Erk Russell said to play Raymond Gross despite being a true freshman. His logic was this, we are losing (and losing is losing no matter what class your QB is) with the more experienced QB, we might as well play the freshman and let him get some experience. Well, that freshman lead them to the Q-finals that year, and then to the NC game, then a perfect 15-0 NC season, and finally, a 2nd NC in 1990.
Sheesh.

Doesn’t sound much different than what CPJ is delivering this year and last year especially if we lose against the ranked teams remaining on our schedule…Mutts, VT, & Clemson. What is different? Last year we lost to KANSAS for crying out loud and the worst Mutts team in decades. Virginia the year and unranked Miami. Sounds like Chan all over again.

Maybe Chan wouldn’t have lost to Kansas, but CPJ wouldn’t get blown out by a Duke team that had fired its coach and appointed Ted Roof as interim. Gailey somehow managed to lose to Duke 41-17 in 2003. To put that loss in perspective, the number of games since where Duke has had a greater margin of victory is ZERO.

In addition, Chan went 9-3 and played in the ACC championship the year before being fired. In his last year, he went 7-5 in his final year. How is CPJ really any better? The fact is both are very mediocre at best. If you are fine with that, than enjoy. I simply want better than both.
There is a great chance we end up 7-5 this year and last year we were 6-6 in the regular season. PLEASE explain how CPJ is any better than Chan. I can even say Chan’s schedule was much harder than the joke of a schedule we had last year and this year.

There were things about O’Leary I didn’t like, in spite of his record. Although the claims that Johnson blames his players are false, O’Leary, on the other hand, DID publicly blame one of his players after a game against (I think) Maryland. I never forgot that. I also think he probably wouldn’t have had the success he did without Friedgen. I made a bold assumption and have posted several times that he has a correspondence degree from Troy, and he has not denied it. So either he’s too stupid to know what a correspondence degree is, or that is indeed the truth. Somebody else apparently knows that his name is actually Jason, something else which he never denies, although he never admits it either.

As a Wahoo grad but long time Jacket fan, I see similarities between CPJ and George Welch. Both did well at Navy. Both came in and had initial success. But like Johnson, Welch could never beat the big in-state rival (VaTech) or win a bowl game. Like Johnson, Welch could not recruit well and ultimately had to go. Controlling the line of scrimmage is the key to successful football at the major college level. And you cannot do that anymore with sub-300 pound linemen. CPJ doesnt seem to get that.

If you knew how to read you’d see its from students that were enrolled initially from 2001-2004. Its not a really good indicator seeing as how that would put you at students who graduated from anywhere in 2005-2009. Its about 3 years too late and outdated, which speaks volumes about the Chan Gailey and Paul Hewitt era. APR is a much better reading how the universities are doing currently instead a few years ago.

Al Grh needs to go?? He is doing great. We have held teams to 14 (for 3 quarters with starters in NC State), Uva – 21, Maryland – 17, Miami – defense gave up 17. We haven’t had that sort of defense since Tenuta was here. The problem is special teams and the offense with no production. Al Groh is not doing a bad job. And Miami had a very short field and one big play before the half. Otherwise its 10 points. His defense has held teams scoreless for a half for about 4-5 games. That’s defense. Miami only got a field goal last week in the second half. Same with UVA and Maryland UNC and NC State (till starters left) With not having his protype linebackers in place I would say he is keeping teams out of the endzone better than we have seen. The only reason we had winning seasons with Chan was due to Tenuta. The only reason we have only 2 losses this year from the past 4 games is defense.
If he can fix the offense and keep the special temas from killing us, we can play against the next three ranked opponents coming to Bobby Dodd.

You make it sound as if George Welsh had a short and unsuccessful career at UVA. The guy was coach there for 19 years (1982-2000) and won the ACC championship in 1989 and 1995 – the only times in their entire history that UVA has won the conference. Couldn’t beat VT? His record was 8-7. He did have a poor bowl record though.

THis team is lost. The coach is in denial. They need to play lee and get him some reps. Still have 5 games left. Tevin is the same qb as last year. He only beat duke and the same thing will happen this year. Johnson can’t get any good recruits to block cause who wants to play in this rinky dink offense. Time to cut your losses and move on. When clemson whips gt by 35, maybe that will wake some deniers up.

Did anyone see NC state smoke Uva AT UVA? 28-14. This is Tevin and coaching. You don’t go from what tech was through the first 2 acc games and then the second half against maryland and just start stinking up the joint. Teams are loading up to stop the run. So to counter that, you have to run up the middle and pass. Our current starters can’t do that. So put someone in who can. Bench Tevin. Tired of watching this train wreck. He doesn’t deserve to play after the past 2 weeks.

Technically Correct
October 26th, 2011
9:08 am
We will not see a significant improvement in the program until a year of two AFTER we transition to a quarterback who can pass effectively and show that we are committed to a balanced attack. A QB who can throw and WRs who can catch will work wonders for CPJ’s offense. Remember the first couple of games this year? Put a Calvin Johnson out wide all day long and he will have single coverage until you have a QB who can reliably get the ball to him. Once you have a QB who can deliver the ball to him, he draws double coverage. Then there are fewer defensive players in the box and we have “the numbers” to be successful with the run. It all starts with the QB and, if the preseason hype was correct, that person is wearing a redshirt right now. When he finally becomes the starter at QB, let him throw, throw, throw for a year and the quality WRs will begin coming a year later. CPJ would have been wise to pull that redshirt off him to let him play and gain experience this year before players’ loyalty to Tevin becomes so entrenched. Look for a “QB controversy” next year, when the inevitable change occurs.

“Thomas Brown. APR is a much better reading how the universities are doing currently instead a few years ago.”
Click the same URL Link, and you will see your precious better reading for Georgia tek currently by simply pressing your precious APR. Then, set the pull down for Georgia Institute of Technology. Then, set the year to the most current data available. Here is what you find sir : (1) Georgia tek in football APR 966; UGA 976. (2) Georgia tek men’s basketball 915; UGA 946. – PENALTY Georgia tek loses 1 Scholarship. (3) Georgia tek women’s basketball 957; UGA 995. (4) Georgia tek LOST in all 3 sports, again, currently; is on NCAA PROBATION currently and UGA is not; and Georgia tek APR is way less than UGA again in all 3 major sports with additional penalties for Georgia tek under the APR
Good point Luke.
Any other smart ideas for excuses, sir ? Why not just say that it’s sad that Georgia tek LOSES to UGA in all the major sports, graduates fewer than UGA in all the major sports, is on NCAA PROBATION, has additional penalties from way worse than UGA in also APR

Thomas Brown, the low graduation rate in basketball is because of all Hewitt’s players who left early for the pros. It’s stupid that those athletes should even be used in making those ratings, but they are. If any UGA basketball players ever left early for the pros, yours would be down too. Overall, the course load at Tech is harder than that at UGA, and most other schools. I think the APR for football players is not that far off the APR for the entire student body. You can deny it all you want, but even the easiest major at Tech is harder than the average major at UGA. Regarding losses to UGA in major sports, Tech still OWNS the mutts in basketball, the last 3 years notwithstanding; just check the series records. I believe baseball is considered a major sport, and Tech has owned the mutts in baseball the last 2 years, and held things pretty evenly overall prior to that. Tech’s women’s basketball has held its own against the mutts the past few years, which is pretty good, considering the late arrival of ALL women’s sports at Tech. I’m pretty sure that Tech overall has had better golf teams through the years than the mutts, although golf is not a major sport. Even in tennis, the past few years, Tech has fared pretty damn well in comparison to the mutts. The ONLY major sport which UGA has had our number in is football, and I won’t make excuses for that. However, Tech still has a total of more conference championships than UGA, including the years we were both in the same conference, and more national championships.

Problem identified, UGA has been “stacking the cupboard with top talent” for years, and you still don’t have anything to show for it. Where has UGA been in the NC race with all that “top talent”? Bama, LSU, Florida, Tenn in the SEC and Tech, FSU, and Miami in the ACC have all won NC’s since the last time the mutts did.

Once again…don’t play the QB although he does suck. The problem is the coach who runs a high school system that NO QB in the world who can throw the ball will want to run. If he mixed up the offense with some passing and show a different formation frequently, he might get a good QB.
Face it; CPJ has his own players now and the results are clear from last year and this year. There is NO excuse for the results…losses to Virginia, Air Force, NC State, and the worst Mutts team in decades.
CPJ needs to go and we need to bring in someone who runs a pro style or spread option attack. Why does anyone on here think CPJ is smarter than all of the other D-1 coaches in the top 50 when he is the only one who runs the triple option exclusively. Do you think he knows something the other 49 coaches don’t or do they know something he doesn’t?

re defending the super fresh Clem receiver. Use two on him and they still have other good options. Use one and get burned? I think with Atchoo (a tes souhaits) returning to get some pressure on the superstar (also young) QB will (somewhat) limit the greatness of the great fresh receiver…hopefully.

It would help them even if it applied to any, if you are talking about the actual rates. Comparing institutions is rather tricky unless you include the different majors involved, and of course, this will never be done. Look at how some schools have many, if not most, of their player majoring in Sociology. I imagine most Tech players could graduate if they had a Sociology major available to them. But, again, this is not taken into consideration.

MakDawg, how about reading everything I wrote instead of just the parts you disagree with. Tech does NOT offer Business Administration; it offers Industrial Management, and it was NOT created for athletes. The IM school at Tech is one of the tops in the nation, and, like all the other schools at Tech, requires ALL students to complete (and pass) 2 semesters of calculus. Like I said before, even if it is the school of choice of the majority of the Tech athletes, it’s still more difficult to get through than the majority of the schools which athletes in Athens enroll in.

GT doug and Paul. Sure, Chipper and Manning need some tweaks here and there. But they’d never be benched because there is no one on the bench that could fill those shoes.
On OUR bench, Synjyn is a better athlete, better runner, and AT THIS POINT, AT LEAST an equal passer to Tevin.
Tevin’s problems aren’t mechanics; it’s CONFIDENCE. He’s throwing off his back foot according to Bohannon, that’s CONFIDENCE. CPJ said he can’t SEE anything in Tevin that he can fix, which hints that it’s a mental issue, not physical.
Tevin is becoming Reggie Ball. The more failures, the deeper he will get into that hole. And the harder it will be to get OUT of the hole.
In fact, benching Tevin would actually HELP him mentally, get some pressure off of him.
Also, if the defenses are making the QB keep, we’d want Synjyn running with the ball rather than Tevin.

Looking at Georgia Tech, Georgia graduation rates
An article written by Tim Tucker with contributions by Ken Sugiura displays inexcusable bias in my unsolicited opinion.
Here is a pull quote: “Georgia Tech ranks last among ACC schools in graduation rates for football and men’s basketball programs, according to figures released Tuesday by the NCAA. Georgia ranks near the middle of the SEC in those sports.”
The phrase “near the middle”, while somewhat explainable, is the basis for my complaint about bias in reporting. A more positive characterization, relatively speaking, would seem more appropriate.
For a point of reference, the teaser headline on AJC.com home page reads:
Ga. Tech ranks last in ACC grad rates
*************************
Here is the rub in my opinion, and let me say that I wish the stats were different, but there seems an apparent bias against our Athens based university based upon the following data:
Both conferences are presently comprised of twelve teams each in men’s football and basketball.
The GT grad rate for football is 55% and for basketball 27% with an overall all-sports graduation rate of 77%, which equates to ELEVENTH in the ACC.
The UGA grad rate for football is 65% (5th in SEC) and for basketball 43% with an overall all-sports graduation rate of 79%, which equates to FOURTH (tied) in the SEC.
I would prefer to see both of these fine institutions lifted up whenever the opportunity arises. Yes, both universities could do better and should strive for better results, but an opportunity to write something with a more positive slant was missed here, and I suspect diliberately.

Advantage Clemson
Johnson coaching with a chip on his shoulder, a frustrated QB backed by a home crowd at night with cold temps.
Advantage Tech
Basic questions to ponder:
How in the world will Tech cover Watkins?
Will Tech rotate QB’s?
Will Tech run more true TO?
I still believe Clemson will win unless they decide to turn it over a couple of times, then it could get real interesting.

Georgia tek student-athletes are not fit for the purpose for which they are intended, either in the classrooms or in the games, compared to their UGA counterparts. Basketball recently ? Recently in basketball ? We are so far ahead in women’s basketball that you have no hope. Basketball men, your charged with murder basketball players in your 1 and done program of Paul Hewitt LOST to UGA’s worst men’s basketball teams ever. Paul lost at home, and he lost on the road to us in men’s basketball and even with the NCAA not counting against Georgia tek in men’s basketball to those who went pro – whom we BEAT when they were there – who are now charged with murder – Georgia tek just simply does not graduate your men’s basketball players. Yes, Georgia tek is ahead in men’s basketball against us all-time, but you said recently and recently you have not done well vs us in men’s basketball. You also got an NCAA PENALTY of 1 lost scholarship because you do so poorly in graduating your men’s basketball players : those charged with murder, those who LOST to us when they were here. It is an absolute embarrassment to Georgia tek the way you LOSE to us in the sports, do not graduate your athletes in the major sports, spend your days in the UGA blog all day long bragging about your SAT and your # 37 national university ranking and try to ignore that you LOSE the games in those major sports to us, do not graduate them, and then make up excuses for charges of murder, selling 93 lbs. of drugs on your campus and now try to bring up Baseball where 1 of your students died of heroin overdose; bragging you are holding your own against us all-time. You are not holding your own against us all-time at anything except ahead in men’s basketball; and that thanks to Whack Hyder – whom none of you know anything about. Nothing. None of you. Shameful for what passes off at Georgia tek anymore around there in the slums of downtown Atlanta in graduating your major sports, beating us in the major sports, having horrible APR in major sports, having no one attend your games in major sports and spending your days trying to say otherwise in the UGA blogs every day, all day long.

Since producing pro football players is such a gauge of talent by you mutts, then let’s gauge the talent of the golf teams using the same standard.

UOAD, I may have a ticket too. macrotech had to cancel, and I’m waiting to hear back from another local friend about going instead. If not, I will have one and also probably end up spending the night in Atlanta, which I definitely do not want to have to do.

“You are not holding your own against us all-time at anything except ahead in men’s basketball; and that thanks to Whack Hyder – whom none of you know anything about. Nothing. None of you. ”
Nonsense. I went to college with his daughter.

I think my alma mater is gonna get the absolute Hell beat out of them Saturday. I recall when Clemson came into town when Charlie Waters was on the team, back in about ‘72, and they beat us by about 21-7 or 21-14. This year we don’t have a shotgun offense, and it seems there’s too much time spent in the backfield faking handoffs. Tev is getting the passing yips, like Nez got, like putters get in golf when they get nervous and can’t putt. If Days fumbles alot, we don’t want him to be another fumble bee like Greg Horne was for Tech in about ‘72. He fumbled so much Coach Carson quit playing him altogether. If we just had a shotgun, Lee could step in where he left off in hs. We need this shotgun stuff like everybody else uses.

Tech needs der blitzkrieg on every defensive play against Clemson. The 3 dl rush is leaky roof, have lbs cover in secondary instead of blitz. We need a Tenuta blitzkrieg badly. If you ever focus on our poor ol 3 dls struggling at the los w/no blitz going on, and the qb having all the time he wants to find a re3ceiver, that’s leaky roof defense. LBs aren’t as small as dbs, and are relegated to cover receivers as dbs in Groh’s d. We need de Obercommando der luftwaffe’s blitzkrieg against Clemson, one of Heisman’s old schools he coached. We sure don’t want to be blown out on Grant Field, but I think that might happen. CPJ better watch out or Ratikovich might meet him after the blowout and fire him, the same way Gailey was fired after a Georgia game.

it’s not just qb, tevin can throw ok, not great but ok however we have no passing game. we need pass routes and we need to cut back a good bit on the option. we need more designed plays and use to option when we need it maybe to fool them sometimes. l don’t care how good a qb throws the offense needs a passing game and we just dont have that yet, we just have few pass plays.
l don’t think its time to call for paul johnsons head yet but l think he needs to know that there is fire under his seat and it is heating up. if we have another losing season he needs to go,we held on to bill curry way to long then chan gailey for to long, we need to be quicker replace coaches that don’t win enough
