Paul Johnson Q&A

Greetings-

The post-game interview from Paul Johnson.

Q: Is frustrating how you’d describe the game?

A: I would say frustrating. I thought our kids played hard  Frustrated that we couldn’t find something that they could do on offense a little better. Clearly, they had a better plan than we did because we couldn’t get any rhythm, couldn’t get much going. Never really hit any big plays after the toss play that we hit to Roddy (Jones) there in the first half and they called offsetting penalties.

We never hit any big plays. We never got anything going. We had a heck of a drive there in the second quarter to get back in the game – 90 yards – and then we give up the touchdown again. We can’t overcome the special teams that we had today and that’s a reflection on me. Clearly, something we’re doing isn’t right in about every facet. I don’t know if the kickoff return got out to the 20. The kickoff (team) let [Miami] return one. The fake punt; I’ll have to look at the tape. It’s an automatic call if there’s a certain look, if there’s not that many people. So it was an automatic call. I’ll have to look and see who made the play because it was [by  Miami's] bench.

With an automatic call, either we made the bad automatic call or we had to turn somebody loose. I don’t know which. The punt (team), we never caught one. When that thing hits the ground, you’ve got to get away from it.

Q: Did Zach Laskey have a problem with confidence fielding punts?

A: I think today was the worst that it’s happened to him. He had one where he bobbled it and dropped it, but clearly after the first one, it looked like that he didn’t want to come up and catch it. You would have to ask Zach.

Q: Will you evaluate that job this week?

A: We’ll take a look at everything. You have to.

Q: What wasn’t working with the offense?

A: I don’t know. We just never got in sync from the interception on the first play. Like I said, I thought we had an opportunity with the drive because we ate up the second quarter and now even with all the things that have happened, if you get in at 14-7 and you get the ball first, you got a chance.

And then the other thing that was a killer was we couldn’t finish the drive in the third quarter. We converted a couple plays and got down there and we couldn’t convert. We could never get anything going. We had a hard time getting the ball on the perimeter. They made us play in that tackle box and we weren’t very good in there. We couldn’t hit any big plays. We’ll have to take a look at the tape and see.

Q: The run defense played better.

A: I thought we played better against the run. We all lost. But for positives, I thought we ganged up on the run a little better and played a little better against the run.

On Tevin Washington’s play:

A: We’ve got to find something he can do.

Q: What happened on the fumbled punt?

A: I’ll have to look at the tape and see. I think he tried to pick it up on the bounce. … I don’t think he fielded it cleanly. The killer was the kickoff, too. It was supposed to be a deep kick.

Q: It wasn’t a squib?

A: Oh, no. There was no squib.

Q: Was Synjyn Days’ fumble part of the reason he hasn’t gotten playing time lately?

A: Well, we’ll just have to see.

Q: Do you have a prognosis on his injury?

A: No.

Q: Is playing Vad Lee a possibility at this point?

A: Probably not.

Q: Can you see that Tevin Washington is doing anything wrong?

A: Nothing that I know that I can see that I can fix. If I did, I would fix it. It’s not fair to put all this on Tevin because there’s a lot of us that have got to do better. We can’t overcome bad plays. Because when  you’re not hitting big plays … I don’t know how many plays that 90-yard drive was. It had to be a slew. That’s hard to do.

Q: What happened on the first play?

A: I thought we had Orwin (Smith) open. It’s something we saw the film study that I thought would have a chance. I think we had a chance. We just didn’t get it done.

Q: How were they giving you problems on the perimeter?

A: We can’t get to the perimeter. I don’t know that we have a tough time on the perimeter. They make you hand the ball off.

Q: Is it a problem of Tevin Washington missing reads?

A: I’m not sure that he’s missing em. I think that what’s happening is you’ve probably got five blocking four and the four are winning. But we’ll have to look a the tape and see.

Thanks for reading. Please follow on Facebook and Twitter.

Perhaps he is learning to be humble…….maybe you KoolAid drinkers should stop worshiping CPJ as the smartest man in college football…..the TO is difficult to defend when teams cannot get enough reps in during the week……but, Tech has no weapons at B-Back or QB…..hopefully Grantham is taking notes and UGA can play containment.

Said it before – Tech just isn’t as good a team as we all hoped this year. Hate to agree with Bradley, but it’s just so. Ds are too big and fast for Tech’s O, Tech’s D is too small for oponents’ O and Johnson seems incapable of attracting anyone who can kick or catch a kick – either that, or he’s so besotted with his O, he doesn’t feel the need to spend time, coaching or money on what is about 20% of the game.
I note the trolls are already out – they gotta get up early on Sunday to get the fry oil hot for my lunch.

There sure were a lot of “I don’t Know” and “I’m not sure” statements there. I know he has to look at the film for details but he sounds as lost as our offense. The defense had a better than usual game but let’s face it a huge part of that was Harris’ terrible. It will be a looooong season from here if someone doesn’t step up big time.

The QB at times throws ten feet too high and soon after throws short….so if you average it….seems just right.LOL
Will the punt catcher ever gain any confidence? Doubtful. Sad.

Hopefully they have a short memory and will play Clemson like we all thought they would/could.

Another great game, SMALL PAUL.

Maybe next year you can play more than one real team in the first half of the season.

SMALL PAUL can really coach against high school teams, but when playing average college teams, he comes up so, so SMALL.

That’s why we now call him SMALL PAUL!

We were picked to finish 4th, we have lost at Miami the past two tries, we ARE A YOUNG TEAM! if I hear one more moron talk about “how the offense is figures out” I will scream. If that were the case then this would have happened about 20 years ago and we would never win another game. You either win or lose, obvious fact. We have NO confidence and no spark. This team is down and I’m not sure Johnson knows what to do to help. He’s obviously not spending all his time on the offense!

In order to be competitive, we have to be focused and in synch and we are neither. We knew coming into this season that we are young and our cush schedule was definilely not a reality check. However, the past few games have been reality checks and reality looks sad.

I sincerely hope somehow this team pulls it together. The Clemson game is going to be total agony to watch……

I’m all commented out for this game – talk to you next Sunday after we get our ass whipped by Clemson again for the second year in a row. After a while – the anticipation of a great season – or even the anticipation of having a chance to win against another FBS program seems distant at this point. Maybe the players and coaches don’t think the season is over – but for this fan who purchases season tickets year after year – to be rewarded with poor performance from palyers and coachs alike against equal or lessor opponents is in excusable. I’m tired of this. This has to be all on the coaching staff. If the defense – which has looked so bad over the past several years – turn it around (whch they mostly did with the exception of the passes over the middle), how can an offense that basically was the reason we won the ACC almost 4 years ago – all of a sudden over the last two games – forget the basics of the system – forget where and how to block? Tech has traditionally had difficulty putting fans in the seats because they field a poor team that plays – most of the time – without consistantcy and without emotion. I thought we had our man in Coach Johnson and at this point – I still do. However, next year will be # 5 for him and it’s time to produce a winner.

This game was very difficult to watch as we were getting our rear ends handed to us physically!! I just never understand why Tech can’t attract and recruit bigger and better athletes. And please Georgia fans, if you really are one, go home…… and leave these blogs to people that really care about Tech or have something constructive to say. I think he writes this the week before. If he can’t see the problems then why is he coaching. This is what a coach is suppose to do, guide them first and then help them to excel. This is on Tevin.

He’s not a consistent pass threat.

He doesn’t have the speed to pull Nesbitt-Houdini moves, so he’s gotta make the DBs think twice in other ways- and for five games that was Hus throwing. Not anymore.

The D has played good enough for us to win the past 2 games.

The worst part hasn’t been losing- it’s been watching Tevin torpedo his own confidence, I feel bad for the kid.

4 bad performances in a row, we won two, just barely. We will get our butts kicked by worst coach in ACC next week. What does that say about Johnson?

The program peaked in 2009 with Chan’s recruits. I don’t see anything in the pipeline (Vad Lee will not return punts, kick the ball or play defensive line) to make me believe Tech will be a contender in the future with the current coaching staff.

Drad, please do not extend Johnson’s contract!! Let this experiment play out for a few more years then we can go back to a more conventional program and possibly get back to the O’Leary days before I am gone.

I heard CPJ on the radio this week expressing his disregard for kickers. His disregard of the kicking game as a whole cost Tech this week. I never understood why folks were so quick to annoint CPJ a genius and I’m more convinced now he’s just a one trick – blow hard – pony.

@ Hayseed…Don’t blame Tevin, blame CPJ for running the high school offense that no QB who can throw the ball will want to play for. Blame CPJ for only throwing the ball in OBVIOUS passing situations like 3rd and very long. Richt isn’t the only coach in Georgia that should be on the hot seat. I guess you think CPJ is smarter than all other coaches at major football programs since Tech is the only program in the top 50 running the triple option exclusively.

We started the season looking like the 2008 and 2009 teams. Now we look like the 2010 team. What happened? We didn’t play anybody. The ACC schedule is weak enough but when you throw in 3 lousy out of conference games and win it is easy to get a distorted sense of who you are. If we continue to stink and have a lousy schedule we will struggle more and more to get people to show up as well as know what we have. Let’s get another SEC team like Auburn early let’s play a west coast team like UGA did and let’s get real early. Winning is an issue but worthy competition is a bigger issue for me when asked to pay more and more for tickets. Rather lose to Boise then beat W Carolina.

It doesn’t seem like you’ve watched much football, so I’ll make it real simple for you: if you’re not effective throwing the ball it’s real tough to win, regardless if the system. That’s down to the QB.

QB TW appears to be playing in slow-motion. He runs and makes decisions in slow motion and looks totally confused. Days is horrible, he can’t hold on to the ball and that’s why we haven’t seen much of him this year. And, the truth is, if we don’t hit on a few passes and our B-back doesn’t step it up we can’t beat anyone else but Duke.

This game, college football, is a real roller coaster ride. Can you imagine how the Oklahoma fan base is feeling this morning? I’m sure they are on the ledge ready to commit suicide. As a life long Tech fan, the one thing I have learned is there is no explaining why a team can play so well one week and then stink up the joint the next. It’s a game of emotion, momentum and a great deal of luck. Sometimes all that is going your way and sometimes it is all going against you. The problem a lot of fans have is they try to apply logic to a game that is many times totally illogical. The only I can control is my love for the school and the football program. So that is what I focus on. Whether we upset a top 10 team or lose to the Citadel, it really never sways my love of the game or my Yellow Jackets. I would not try to over analyze what is going on here. I assure that no one is more invested in winning than Coach Johnson, the coaching staff and the players. That put a lot more on the line than anybody on this blog. In any event, you never know how things will turn out so my advice is just to continue to support our guys and hope for improvement next week. Maybe we will play inspired and the Tigers will wet the bed. You never know what will happen when toe meets leather.

Tech has the second youngest team in ALL of college football, that is FCS and FBS. This team is going to stumble and get better. No panic from this Tech fan. They will be a really great team next year with a real QB and a seasoned O line. The defense is better this year than last, the offense is far worse. First year running the triple option without a warrior at QB, tough to make it work. Coach Johnson has recruited quite well if you ask me, look at how many freshman and sophmores are playing. All I ask of the teams I pull for, and really all any fan should expect, is for them to be competitive and at the very least give themselves a good chance to win and maybe be in the hunt for a championship once in a while. Unfortunately, that is not what we have gotten the past 2 games at GT. This team has played without any emotion, focus, intensity, determination or heart (the defense has taken some big strides to right their ship and played like they wanted to win). This lackadaisical attitude the team has shown 2 weeks running reflects directly on the coaches. They don’t know how to motivate these young kids apparently. There doesn’t seem to be any leadership from the older guys on the team. Someone needs to light a FIRE under their collective butts. IMNTBHO, this is what we fans can expect to see until someone in charge figures this out. CPJ’s statements that he doesn’t believe he should have to motivate these young men shows he has no understanding of the mental aspects of competitive sports. Surely he had to take a psych or two somewhere along the way.

Vad Lee is the real deal and he will turn the offense around. Tevin is just Tevin, same guy who was 1-3 last year. He panics when he gets hit too much. If Days would just hold on to the ball then there is a way we could win the ACC this year. No I don’t think we will win next week, but it is possible to be ACC champions by just winning the next 3 games. I think we can beat Duke and have a really good shot against Virginia Tech (if the offense turns around under Days) but Clemson looks to be the real deal, I almost want Clemson to win out to get some ACC respect. So Either start Days and see what happens. Clemson does not have a world class D. If you could have 3 of those 90 yard drives for touch downs , there would only 10 minutes of clock left in the game. Best D is a good offense. Clemson is studing up on how to make Tevin run the ball, Days will light them up for 300 yards if they do that.JUST HOLD ON TO THE BALL!!!!!

As you GaTech fans know, we Miami folk are dealing with our own major problems. You saw for yourselves how injuries and suspensions have decimated the Hurricanes defense. NCAA sanctions await, forcing Al Golden and the coaching staff to alter their recruiting plan to fit the possibility of reduced scholarships. Paul Johnson runs this style of offense because it fits the kind of players that are available to him. Don’t fault him because you don’t like the triple option. It works for him, and the typical Georgia Tech recruit. Jimmy Johnson dissected and destroyed the triple option in much the same way Al Golden showed us. It takes a scheme and the right kind of athlete to execute it. Laud the man’s success, for Paul Johnson has done amazing things for Yellow Jacket football.

I am so tired of everyone getting on tevin! He only can try and execute a flawed system the best way he can. If I recall nesbit wasn’t to successful in this offense last year. Where is tevins supporting cast? The Bell Cow of the offense must be a dominant B Back. Clearly we don’t have that with what I have observed this season. The Blame should be on CPJ and bohannon because they decide who plays in the QB/Bback rotations.

It proves one thing, if you have a winning football team year after year, look what kind of recruiting you will get. Why is Alab, LSU,OK,Boise, etc. all winning teams get good recruits. Watch Clemson the next few years in the ACC, they will have great recruits like they do now and keep getting them. By the way, most of the whole team is either Freshman, Soph. watch out BCS for them. Tech will never have good recruiting without winning. Tech used to be a powerhouse on Bobby Dodd, those days are gone, most good players would rather go to a easier school such as Georgia, Clemson etc. You have to get those players that want a good education and also play football.

What I watched yesterday was just bad offensive and special teams football. Washington is now just playing scared. I don’t care what type of offense you run, if the QB is scared you will not succeed. The kicking game is laughable. Bob Davie ran out of adjectives trying to describe it. As I lifelong Tech fan, I have been conditioned to not expect greatness, but I do expect our teams to execute, compete and least give themselves a chance to win against teams with superior talent. I haven’t seen that the last two years. Instead, I get just plain old bad football.

I was not sold on T. Washington in the Spring. he has played well at time and bad at others.
I am not a UGA fan and I am not on the Fire Everybody Bandwagon like the dawg are much of the time. That being said Tech has to do something with the Special teams. I can’t understand the Kickoff problems. There have to be kids out there that can get the ball in the EZ consistently. Young is not an excuse it is a fact but it has to be overcome. If you are not happy with TECH or the coaches that is fine, but be respectful with your criticism. I would think that we could recruit well with the offer of fast Playing Time. With a good D this team could easily compete for the ACC Coastal and be in the ACC CG on a regular basis.

CPJ has had four years and we still don’t have a decent QB. This is not setting up as a good trend. I’m starting to worry. I believe that PJ is losing the recruiting battles. While one can survive without a team of 1 and 2 stars you need a core of 3 stars and we simply do not have them. Our O-Line is incredibly out matched week end and week out… How does Navy AF and Army do it? I just don’t get the poor O-Line performance.

Tevin Washington has fallen overboard and is now drowning. It is up to the coaches to throw him a life raft by putting someone else in there. Days does not look like the answer either with his fumblitis. But at least Days has some quicks. Try Sims back there. Try anything different than Washington because I am tired of watching the deer in headlights. I blame the coaches for making me say these things about Washington. It is their fault that he is still in there.

I’ve been a GT fan for decades and have never seen such a lack of talent. The defense is doing their job and improving. I guess Groh is doing it with smoke and mirrors. As far as size, speed, and strength, it looks like we are over-matched nearly everywhere; yet with some decent special teams play, we could have won at at least one of the last two games. I was afraid we would see the difference in 2 star and 4 star recruits when we got to the second half of our schedule. Giff Smith was a heck of a recruiter, and we miss him.

I think his long term success at Tech will come if he decides to go about 30% on his TO and 70% on a more traditional look.
This is his 4th season at Tech, by now fans were hoping that his offense would be humming. Coach Groh seems to have a decent package going on defense, if CPJ’s offense continues to flutter there will be mad frustration amongst the Tech faithful.

So we lost to UVA instead of UNC or NCSt. Granted the lack of offense in the last 2 losses is troubling, and TW’s sudden inability to throw the ball with efficiency is killing us, along with special teams problems, but we’re kind of where most of us thought we would be.
Hey, the defense actually played fairly well, except for the TD right before the half.

Paul Johnson has met his match folks. NC state, Maryland, and Virginia should have been blow out wins with at-least 21 point spread. The ACC as a whole struggles with teams from the FCS. Start Sims at QB (Lyons at BB). Why? He is a better runner than TW and he has good ball security, unlike Days. He has worked for 2 years getting ready to be a TO QB. He has been getting some reps this year as an emergency backup.

Lastly, this option is not using up Vad’s redshirt.

How can it hurt? At this point, we can always go back the dynamic TW-led offense, if it doesn’t work. I cannot believe it would be any worse.

dawgfan

October 23rd, 2011
2:40 pm

Actually GT is off the map, Johnson’s methods didn’t work that great at Navy either. He was usually good for about 8 or 9 wins a year there at most. That’s why I always got a big kick out of all the hype about what wonderful things he did at Navy when Tech hired him. His teams at Navy were plagued by the same deficiencies you’re seeing now at Tech: Poor defense, poor special teams, no passing game. He’s never progressed as a head coach and figured these things out. He’s happy leading the nation in rushing and averaging 8 wins per year.

Paul Johnson might be the most overrated coach in America. He’s got a neat offense that’s fun to talk about and he’s got a sharp tongue in interviews. That’s all it takes to get the short attention span media going ga ga over him, but the reality is that he’s a one trick pony. He can’t field a decent defense. He can’t implement a passing game. He can’t recruit. You can tell by the way he talks about it that he just doesn’t like recruiting. I’m sure there are things Nick Saban doesn’t like about being a head coach, but he does them anyway and he does them well because that’s his job and he’s getting paid well to do it. Paul Johnson is all about Paul Johnson and he’s going to do what Paul Johnson wants to do. What’s so sad is that Tech fans have put so much trust and faith in this guy but he would drop them like a bad habit if a more prestigous job came along. It won’t though because he’s average at best.

Thanks for reading.

I think GT upsets Clemson. Clemson is not all that on defense either and is getting way too big for it’s britches. For that reason alone, GT sneaks out a victory at home. If the two teams played 8 times in a row, Clemson would win 7, but I just think Tech finds a way to upset Clemson at home. Their offense is phenomenal but I simply think Clemson stumbles on the road in a rivalry type game w/ GT’s backs against the wall. You’ll now see less pressure on Tech and should allow for the kids to just play. This team was never a top 20 team and the pressure of being a top 20 fraud was too much for them. Hopefully, then can enjoy being the spoiler for the next two weeks.

I’m a UGA fan but I’ll admit our season is looking eerily similar to Tech’s. Our 5 game winning streak is nothing more than a gift from the scheduling gods. In other words we’re winning games only because our opponents stink. Next week we play the worst Florida team probably since before steve spurrier was the head coach. If we don’t beat UF this weekend then we’re probably never going to beat them again. Both Tech and UGA are overrated and we will be exposed before this season ends. And in the off season maybe Richt and PJ can carpool and take a ride up to Virginia and learn from Beamer on how to coach some special teams.

Coach Johnson I know what Tevin can do, NOTHING!!! He’s lost it put him on the bench that’s something he can do is sit on the bench because he’s not QB material. If you keep Al Groh on as D-coordinator then you need to go too. We’ll be fortunate if we go 6-6 but we’ll lose the bowl game if we get one so there’s another losing season 6-7. Face it, these teams in the ACC have figured out this triple option and it’s only gonna get worse for us now. Coach Johnson is not an offensive genius and Al Groh is definitely not a Defensive genius. I would hope that Tech will find a good coach that has an offense to were we can compete and a defense that doesn’t take 3 to 4 years to learn. The 3-4 scheme is not working and never will. Al Groh didn’t do anything spectacular while at Virginia, what was Coach Johnson thinking when he hired this idiot or does he even think at all. If you ask me I think Johnson is bull headed and ignorant. Please don’t hate me for these comments but people i’m fed up with this idiot for a coach that we have.

CPJ has not recruited well. The building blocks of any team is recruiting. Tech is going to be pretty ordinary 7-4 and 8-3 and not even that good in the last two years. If our Tech fans keep putting up with poor recruiting, then we get what we deserve. We keep using excuses like ‘we are young’ and ‘wait for CPJ to get his players’, well bad young players mature into experienced bad players and CPJ in is his fourth year.

While I’m on it, if you don’t have the horses to run your pet offense, shouldn’t you as the coach, the professional with years of experience, design something that fits your team’s makeup, rather than trying to jam square pegs into your round hole? That just shows inflexibility and suggests that CPJ isn’t really that great.

And if undefeated teams keep going down the way they did this weekend, look for Clemson to be in the championship game — they won it the last time the sweeked by Wofford.

My recomendation as a Tech grad is for Tech to not wear such loud, contrasting color unis for away games. The wide, thick dark blue contrasts so much with the white that Tech looks like killer whales out there. This look would be appropriate for Oregon or Washington, but not Georgia Tech. Even down on the coast of Georgia there aren’t any killer whales. Central Florida and O’Leary’s team might wear them b/c of Sea World. Tech should wear dark blue as an accent color, such as very narrow shoulder stripes, and stick with old gold stripes worn for CPJ’s first year. Or wear the dark blue jerseys like the 1990 team, but don’t add any mod stripes across the chest to it, just keep them solid dark blue w/white numbers. Believe me, uni selection means alot for team motivation. Actually the colors could win the game themselves almost. This year’s unis’ contrasting colors take away from viewing the gold helmets since they’re so loud. They aren’t too different from last year’s bw, lose those games they were worn for unis b/c of the loud contrast. There’s just a clash of colors that is loud as Hell in the unis. Tech needs a blend of colors, not a clash. Whoever does their art for the unis is lousy year after year. This went back to Curry’s black watch defense with black jerseys and gold pants, when weird, unTech-like uni art started at Tech. It’s been that way since. I recall when lowly Furman beat Curry’s team at Grant Field one Saturday afternoon. I guess it was their white and purple accented unis that won the game for them. Not too much purple though. Their jersey numbers would have been purple.

I think other teams have solved Tevin Washington. Just push your front seven into the Tech offensive line, some people get lose in backfield, Washington poops his pants and runs a 2 yard QB keeper. If I was a D cord, I would rather see Washington QB keepers all day compared to Orwin Smith runs. Also our B back has done nothing all season so defenses don’t even respect the dive anymore. They just play the pitch = victory for them. Watch the past three games and you will understand what I’m talking about.

Defenses only have to worry about the pitch, everything else, dive, keeper, (hold my breath) throw Tech can screw up on their own.

TW is an easy target, but it is not his fault, he made bad passes, but generally made decent reads this week. CPJ identified the problem ” I think that what’s happening is you’ve probably got five blocking four and the” four are winning”
Defensive ends have been roaming our backfield the last three games. TW has tried address this with is dives which obviously is not the answer, Nesbitt could pull this off, but I don’t think TW has the physical skills to do it. If he could make better passes, things would equal out.
We are playing better teams that have had 7 weeks of film to watch, and arn’t really giving TW many “options” to use.
That said, the team is young, and EVERYONE thought they would be 6-2 (or worse) at this point at the beginning of the season.
Clemson is on a roll lately, and I am not sure if we can stop them. I still like out odds with VT, Dooke and UGA. We will win two more, finish 8-4, EXACTLY what we all thought would be a achievable good outcome for a young team at the beginning of the season.
Don’t give up on this team, let them know you support them. Sting em.

Delbert D.

October 23rd, 2011

It’s not so much Dwyer or even Allen being missed at B-back; it is the play of the offensive line. Similarly, Auburn’s problems aren’t due to not having Newton at QB, and they still have Dyer at RB. Both of those two teams are young and inexperienced. Georgia Tech has 2 senior starters on offense, Roddy Jones and Tyler Melton. Check out this list of OL starters and their backups:

LT – Beno r-So; Alford r-Fr
LG- Jackson r-So; Mason Fr
OC – Finch r-So; McRae r-Jr
RG – Uzzi r-Jr; Lanier r-So; Braun Fr
RT – Smith r-Jr; Kidney r-So; Joe Fr.

That is 3 true freshmen, 1 redshirt freshman, 5 redshirt sophomores and 3 redshirt juniors manning the most critical positions on the offense.

How is Florida doing without Tim Tebow, how is Georgia doing without Matt Stafford, how is Auburn doing without Cam Newton, how are the Colts doing without Peyton Manning? Yes it does pay to have a good quarterback lined up when a good quarterback leaves the team. It looks like Tevin can’t handle these big football players getting close to him now. That falls on the offensive line and it also falls on the offensive plays being called. Why not just pass it the whole game and see if Tevin can get in a rhythm if they can’t establish their running game?

Fire Mularkey! My statement earlier @ 8:39AM

“Maybe the players and coaches don’t think the season is over – but for this fan who purchases season tickets year after year – to be rewarded with poor performance from players and coaches alike against equal or lessor opponents is in excusable.”

Your response @ 11:11AM
Ga Tech Old Timer: You said equal talent in your ealier comment. If you believe GT has the same horses as Mia, Clem, VT, or even Virginia for that matter then you don’t know much about football.

Now sir: I must tell you that equal or lessor oppenents not only bears the connotation of the number of stars as evidenced by your terse response – but it also means that Georgia Tech plays within the ACC confrence in Division 1 – as does Miami, Clemson, Virginia Tech and Virginia hence the meaning “equal opponents” whereas Georgia Tech also schedules opponents in a lower division such as Jacksonville State, Western Carolina, and East Carolina to name just a few – hence the meaning “lessor opponents.” Fire Mularkey! – You’re probably right about my knowledge of football – there’s been a lot of years past since I first started walking those stadium ramps at Grant Field when Bobby Dodd was first starting to coach – and I don’t recon the boys that played for him and the coaches before him relied too much on players “stars” or whatever they used to rank them with back in those days – they just knew a good player when they saw one and they knew the boy’s family and background as well to figure out if they would fit into the program and give it all they had – on the field and in the classroom. But you know what I did since you caught me without knowing the answer to the “three star” comment – I went looking and found out that our recruits for 2010 broke down as follows – 4 stars – 1, 3 stars – 11, 2 stars – 2 and 0 stars – 2. For the year 2011 it’s 4 stars – 1, 3 stars – 13, 2 stars – 5, 1 star – 1, and 0 stars 3. The 2012 class looks like this 4 stars 1, 3 stars – 8, and 2 stars – 2. Now I suppose somehow you must know a lot more about football than I do – but just on the surface when I add the 3 stars together, I get something like 32 out of a total of 52 and the recruiting isn’t over yet for this year and no one signed.Seems to me that 32 equals the “core” you refered to earlier. Now – if I can be of any further assistance to you in helping YOU to know football – give me a ring sometime and we’ll talk football – if I’m not taking a nap.

Dawg48….Main thing is the Coach….How can he not put more emphasis on special teams? How can he not think these young men, mostly teenagers, don’t need motivating? How can he not have a special teams coach? S/T is equally as important as offense & defense. The team is very young and we must suffer through their growing pains. The lines are both a bit undersized. The team does not seem to have any internal leadership to fire them up, ala Ray Lewis. If they do, I see no evidence of it. The team has shown great potential. only to fall flat. Case in point, I truly know that the team that played the 1st 5 games could still be undefeated. Where is the fire? I don’t know if this TO offense is good enough for “big boy football”. I want to believe it is. Can CPJ recruit the proper athletes to run it effectively? The defense has grown in each of the last 4 games….they only gave up 10 points to UM, excluding turnover influenced scores. CAG seems to be gaining ground defensively. Finally, last but not least, can they man up these next 4 games and be competitive and give themselves a chance to win?

Fire Mularkey! Sorry – I dozed off for a minute there. The answer to how Navy and Air Force do it –
they are service academies! That’s what service academies do – they drill pride – honor – dedication – commitment into these guys in a military setting — obviously not to enhance the football program to make them leaders when they graduate. Don’t you thing that these same attributes are brought to the practice field and game field when it’s time to paly ball? How does one leave this training that’s drilled into each cadet every day for four years – back in the dorm when it’s time to practice or play? Ga Tech Old Timer

Dawg48 – I do like it but I tell you what. I’ve seen a lot of teams play multiple offenses – which included the option – and I think rather than having the option as a live or die offense – we’d be better off learning to instert something different from time to time to keep the other guys guessing. I think multiple sets – spreads – formations would create the same havoc Coach Johnson wants in terms of confusing the opponent. I think unless you have the “horses” to run the offense or defense you’d like to run – you’re basically shoting yourself in the foot to try to force the offense / defense on players who can’t handle it. In other words learn to use your strengths rather than expose your weaknesses. Most coaches can get more from players who are physically adapt at running whatever you want them to run rather than making excuses for not being able to carry the load or get the job done.

Paul Johnson should consult with his friend Bill Belichick about what to do with special teams. It looks like it is an afterthought rather than a focus area. He and somebody on the staff may be working their tails off on the problems, but I don’t see results. Some of the players on punt and kickoff coverage and returns are good athletes on the depth chart, but there is no evident plan as to what they are supposed to do. Again, surely there is, but it isn’t showing on the field.

I don’t know if I have anything to add that hasn’t already been said

I didn’t expect that type of game.

I will say this: Miami has a gem in Al Golden.

The difference in athleticism on the lines of scrimmage was STAGGERING in this game. I knew there would be some difference but it was a mismatch all day long.

The recruiting shortcomings were highlighted big time and that coupled with a QB who is out of sync resulted in a lot of ugly.

Clemson’s D is not as good as Miami, especially up front but the athletes they have on offense make this game appear to be another mismatch.

Good luck but WOW, have things changed!!

Another season of frustration!! I see another 6-6 season and another bowl loss played on a blue field somewhere in the far west. Either the average teams have figured out how to defend the option or Tech dosen’t have the players to execute their assignments. If Tevin is a player, I’m a 74 year old all-pro QB at Green Bay! Paul, do him a favor and bench him….it would be the best call you’ve made all year.

I saw three things that concerned me. First, Tevin Washington had a horrible game! He has lost his confidence, and appears tentative and unsure of himself about what to do with the ball! Second, our special teams were awful! They killed us, and took away any chance we had to come back and win! Third, our O line got dominated all game long! We couldn’t block their D line or their linebackers, to get the running game going! We better get these things figured out or the Clemson game will be ugly!

Laskey is in over his head. He is not he best option as a returner. Sure hands on the practice field is not the same as big time Saturday’s. The kickoff team does not have the best athletes available on it. What happened to Chris Jackson? Fought his way back and not given an opportunity to play on special teams! Georgia Tech has the most remarkable offence known to college football, but BCS schools have figured out a way to short circuit it. So a modification is needed: Always Pal Two Quarterbacks!
Heresy!! you say. I would agree except his offence requires the QB to carry the ball up to 30 times a game or more. The QB is tackled/blocked another twenty. Then you expect the QB to make split second decisions to hand off, pitch, or throw the ball. FATIGUE make cowards of us all. Mistakes are made.
Look at the facts:
1) There is no other position in the field that the same player plays every down EXCEPT the quarterback.
2) Tech has the best offence in the land. It’s different.
3) Defenses are locking down every position except the Quarterback. That requires the Quarterback to run the ball 15 to 30 times a game. He get’s hit another twenty times. And then he’s supposed to make split second decisions and/or throw the ball at the right time.
4) At this level of play, the quarterback becomes fatigued and begins to make bad decisions.
Coach Paul Johnson should activate Vad Lee, giving him three quarterbacks. Play all three until two surface as the best. Develop packages for the two.

Actually I think this is just a matter of Tech being what it is going to be this season – just a fair football team. The early schedule of very weak teams raised unrealistic expectations among fans. CPJ has not had really strong recruiting classes and I think that the opponents are beginning to use their superior talent to catch up with his unusual offense. Tech will continue to be a pretty good team but will rarely achieve as it did a couple or three years ago.The ACC is going to become a more difficult place to play with the expansion.

Marietta Buzz, I think I would like to have some of those BSU receivers and that QB at Tech. Tech could be as awesome as they looked in the early games if they had more than one receiver and a QB that could really throw and run. Nobody is afraid of Tech’s passing game or of it’s QB running the ball. I just think over the long haul Tech is going to be hard pressed to find the athletes to compete against the really big name colleges. Good family backgrounds are important and I wish we had more athletes from that mold. I am not sure how you define families either.

BankerDawg

October 24th, 2011

Wow. I didn’t expect this at all. I picked Tech 30-23 to win straight up.

Two things:
Line Play
Special Teams

Your o-line is getting blown up at the point of attack. No wonder your QB is petrified back there and your BB has nowhere to go (although I do think if you had a Dwyer/Allen back there you would be getting more production). TW looks awful becuase he has no idea what to do when defenders are on him early or coming from all directions.

Your special teams are just awful.

If you were even decent on special teams, you probably are much closer, if not ahead, in the 4th quarter despite how badly your offense played.

Muff into the endzone and a ridiculous “squib that wasn’t supposed to be a squib” after your 20 player drive were game changing bad plays.

Clemmons is probably going to result in a long night for the Tech Nation…just be glad Game Day decided to head to Stanford for the weekend.

I’m usually more upbeat on the Tech Blogs, but outside of Duke, it looks pretty bleak at the moment.

On a positive note, your D looks to be improving.

i am not happy to lose the games like we did. the defense seems to be improving but the offense is stagnant.

if we pair the d with last years o we win a few more games and finish with a winning season. the d IS getting better. if we had attaochu and drummond for the maryland game we win and would be 7-1 imo. the miami game was fug butt ugly. we were exposes as a team with an up n coming d but a struggling o.

having said that…. lets get real here. the jackets are the youngest team in the country not named auburn. And younger than a young and potent clemson team.

we can not recruit like the clemson’s and auburns’s etc. they not only attract players who are almost fully cooked body wise but they can attract all those players who ‘dont want to go to a school with our curriculum for what ever reason’.

for those reasons we are now going after big framed big bodied kids on both side of the ball. kids that need a year in the weight room and need some coaching up.

paul has been here 4 years now. the gailey players are almost gone. he is trying to maintain the status quo of 7-8-9 win seasons until he can see the fruits of playing a lot of players that have been red shirted.

to those of you who complain about our recruiting or lack their of i say hogwash. boise state is a prime example of what can be accomplished with a program that can rely on red shirting 10-15 players every year.

we are the second youngest team in the country. we are not there yet.

give this team a chance.

i can still see us finishing 8-4 …. a nice improvement from last year.

I said it two weeks ago and I’ll say it again… We will be extremely lucky to win one more game this year. We must embrace our destiny.. It’s another 6-6 season with a trip to the Toliet Bowl to play the University of Wesucktoo. It is painfully clear to me that we have major problems in every area of the game. Our quarterback (bless his heart) can’t throw at this level. He might make it on a Division II football team but NOT at this level. Our special teams are really special. I suspect they will break some kind of NCAA record by seasons end at this rate. And it won’t be the kind of record you brag about either. Our OL is undersized and they have been manhandled for the past 3 weeks. But I don’t blame our players they are only as good as they are coached. Our coach makes the same excuse every week.. “There are a number of things we need to work on”… blah blah blah!!!! I’ve got to believe there’s some people asking themselves, what were we thinking when we hired this guy.

If we had a quarterback who could hit a receiver 5 yards in the clear with no pressure on him whatsoever, we might be able to compete for the championship. There has to be an option quarterback out there who can get the ball in the vicinity of the receiver consistently.

i am probably wrong but i do think that the top tier teams ( ok bama osu fla etc win on an average of 10-11 games year in an year out with an occasional mnc here and there.

i think we could be in the next tier down. winning seasons of 9 wins sprinkled in with a few 10 -11 win seasons.enough to a mnc to smell it.

far as this season goes…. for the last year i kept telling myself i cant waite for the next season to get here. for 6 games it was pure heaven. the last two games have been a bit bleh.

i am not going to let the first 6 games ruin the last 6. one game at a time.

We had major issues on special teams last year and we STILL have major issues on special teams this year. We couldn’t throw the ball last year and we STILL can’t throw the ball this year.
