Greetings-
Nothing earth-shattering that bears further comment from Monday’s practice. I thought, at the midpoint of the season, it’d be worthwhile to compare numbers with last year’s team. I think I’ll try to go on a per-play averages as much as possible. They say a lot more, I think, than per-game averages.
The numbers aren’t entirely apple to apple. The 2010 numbers are for the whole season, so they’re weighted with the full ACC schedule, while half of this year’s data comes from the non-conference games. First column is this year, second column is 2010. Sorry the columns aren’t clean. Do you expect blog software that filters out benign posts is going to have tabs?

Obviously, a lot of considerable gains, most notably with the various stats detailing the offense’s capacity to score in basically the same amount of time. As I wrote a couple weeks ago, the efficiency of the passing game is the biggest change, third-down conversion rate and turnover rate.
As you would have guessed, the completion percentage has fallen considerably in the last two games. It was in the 60’s a couple weeks ago.

I think this screams “slight progress.” (Perhaps in the style of Steve Carrell in “Anchorman.”) Almost every number is better, but nearly every one is moderate. Obviously, the fact that the points are nearly identical is ultimately what matters. The notable improvements to me are yards per pass play, passes per interception and passes per sack.
As the completion rate is nearly the same, lower yards per pass speaks to tackling the ball, limiting yards after catch and long pass plays, which confirms what I think I’ve seen. The interception rate is interesting in that the completion rate is almost the same, because it seems like the interceptions have often occurred with quarterback hurries. So you’d think that if the interception rate were improved due in part to more pressure on the quarterback – as the highly improved passes per sack would indicate – the completion rate would also be notably lower.
Perhaps the secondary is doing a better job of taking advantage of opportunities.
Third-down efficiency is getting better, but needs to keep improving.
* Includes the defensive touchdown. You’re going to have to live with it.
** Includes special teams or defensive fumbles.
*** Counts touchdowns as seven points.

The “Defending the triple option” story, from the Charlottesville Daily Progress, the Washington Post, the Roanoke Times and the Richmond Times-Dispatch. (I’d never thought about this, but Virginia and Virginia Tech might have the most newspapers covering them on a regular basis of any team in the ACC. Maybe Miami, if there’s other papers besides the three big ones in South Florida.)
They note that the Virginia scout-team offense has been practicing without a football to train the defense to play assignment football, which is not uncommon. A pretty good note about Virginia’s scout-team quarterback in the Times story. It’s Virginia’s holder, who joined the team after working in the equipment room. Jacob Hodges ran a triple-option offense in high school.
A quarterback derby is heating up, but Michael Rocco will remain Virginia’s starter, again from the Daily Progress.
Two stories from Sting Daily, one on Tech’s third-down success by Jon Cooper and a breakdown of the defense from Saturday by Matt Winkeljohn.
Thanks for reading. I’ll post something after Paul Johnson’s news conference, noonish.

5150, somebody last week did call down a fellow Tech fan over what turned out to be a misunderstanding, but I have not seen you call down any the way “contempt” said, and I haven’t either. It’s just that we are both smart enough to see through the smoke screens the trolls put up

Just a troll 5150.
I’ve disagreed with u a few times.
Tech fans show respect to each other.
If he wanted respect, he should use the same name.
And learn to handle a difference of opinion (if somehow he was a young Jacket.
Doubtful though.

Watching “Miracle” about the 1980 USA hockey team on TV in the office. I didn’t listen to the presser figuring KEN will break it down enough for us later. Don’t even have Barnhart & Durham on today.

There was a troll (or trollette) on here several weeks ago under the name GT Girl (or something like that). At first she seemed believable, but they’re all dumb. They eventually give it away, and she did, and it got ugly.

This fall has had a lot of good sports news.
Yankees and Phillies beat (by the team they helped get into the playoffs).
FSU losses three straight, the last to Wake which must be tough on their haughty fan base.
And Tech 6-0.
I am not interested in Atlanta’s pro teams.
If you take a hard look at their general managers, you can see they will never put together a championship team.
Both Wren and Dimitroff too eager to sign whatever free agent is available.
Wren has done better lately but Braves are still stuck with Lowe’s contract.
Better to do nothing than do something foolish.

OK Gents that I see on here all the time, please talk me off the ledge. Why do I worry about this game against the Wahoos? It just seems like the perfect trap game and their stats show an improved team, one a little better than Maryland.
I trust CPJ to push the team to not be complacent but I’m still a little worried. The offensive mistakes of the last two games are worrisome and the D, while playing much better, still gives up plays like the 77 yd run by the MD QB.
I need some solid facts to make me feel confident.
And Ken, thanks for the stats. You are feeding right into our wheelhouse with stuff like that.

I Post on all the Tech opponents blogs. I don’t mind the banter. I don’t like the just HATEFUL post to a specific blogger. The calling DUMB or a Moron is ok when the post are factually CRAZY.
I don’t post on many of the Tech OOC teams. That EXCLUDES UGA. We are in the same state so the back and forth banter will never end. NCIbis from the U is crazy mad for Miami but we have fun going back and forth. The UGA fans(for the most part) just want to get to name calling and hate. DiLex, Cuz, and 45ACP are some good dawgs to chat with.

VERY worst football conference in America. God, who in the hell does Tech play? They may as well be playing Grady High School. They would get totally punished by ANY of the teams ahead of them, and probably 8 behind them.

I just have a few points I’d like to make. First, GA Tech was up 42-14 on NC State when the defensive reserves started rotating in to complete the game, just like all of the other games the Jackets had big leads. If any of you had watched the game against Maryland carefully, watched the replay, or the game films, you would have seem that three fairly easy passes were dropped that would have gone for TD’s. GA Tech also missed another chip shot field goal. Had the passes connected, Maryland would have to have respected that part of the offense more and backed off of the line of scrimmage, which would have opened up the running game.
The stats are also misleading in that several of the games, the Jackets had pulled their starters and were playing their reserves the second half of several games. This reduced the offensive output, but it also changed the the numbers the defense gave up. The GA Tech reserves were basically playing “prevent defense” so the opposition would spend time running clock. This meant they got yards, and yes, sometimes even points. But it also meant the game clock was winding down. The other point was not to get starters injured and give the reserves game experience.

How about whoever is the first to post on a new blog, instead of saying “first”, just go through the list of the usual doggies comments:
Tech Fans are all nerds.
The ACC is the worst conference in college football.
GT doesn’t play anybody, only high school caliber teams.
GT can’t sell out the stadium.
CPJ can’t recruit and his high school offense will never work.
GT is 1-9 against the doggies the last decade.
Did I miss any? (btw, only the last one has any basis of fact. And they don’t want to mention that CPJ is only 1-2 against UGA, with the 2 loses coming down to the last play. I am thinking he will be 2-2 after this year).
This way all the UGA trolls (as Super calls them) don’t have to come on the blog and post the same old stuff every time. And we wouldn’t have to worry about someone getting excited about being “first”.

@Jacket Man
Those are good observations, but you have to realize that they apply to other teams as well as they do to the Jackets. Any team that is having success will play some games in which they greatly outclass their opponents. These games tend to result in inflated offensive statistics and, as you said, they can also lead to deflated defensive statistics if young and inexperienced players get opportunities to play in games that are essentially “over”.
While that might not be true of teams that don’t have winning records, those are not the teams with which you should really be interested in comparing statistics.
