Georgia Tech’s Jason Peters Q&A
Greetings-
I was supposed to talk with Georgia Tech defensive end Jason Peters immediately after practice Monday, but due to some sort of mistake I missed him and he later came by to the office of sports information director Dean Buchan for an interview, which worked out well because we could talk for longer than I would have otherwise.
I had some questions related to the defense and the N.C. State game, which made up part of Tuesday’s notebook, but also had some “get to know you” type questions that make up this Q and A. No two cents with this one; the answers speak for themselves. As you’ll read (hopefully), Peters is bright, interesting and talkative – an interview triple threat. Thanks for reading.
Q: What’s your favorite website?
A: My favorite website is stumbleupon.com. So basically when you first go on and log on to it, it’ll ask what are your interests and you fill all that information out and you’ll click a button that says ‘Stumble.’ Basically, it finds websites for you or just interesting stuff that you like and it just pops up for you and you just click ‘Stumble’ when you’re done with that web page. You just go to the next one, the next one, the next one. You just keep hitting ‘Stumble’ and it’ll keep bringing stuff up for you. I recommend that you try it. You can lose a lot of hours on that website, I promise you.
Q: How much do you pay attention to other teams in the league or around the country?
A: A lot. Just because you know who your competition is, so you always want to see what they’re doing, how they’re progressing, what’s going on with them and around the league, just because I’m a competitive kind of person but I also really like the game of football.
I like seeing how other teams do it, how other conferences do it, how the game change. Say, if you play in the Pac-10, say, if you play in the Big 12 – or the Big 10 now (after losing Colorado and Nebraska) – or say, if you play against a team like Notre Dame, different leagues have different characteristics.
Say, if you play in the SEC, you may not be playing the same kinds of schemes, so it may be different kinds of players. I just like seeing how it all fits together, how different schemes work, how people are playing, how techniques work. It’s just something that kind of interests me.
Q: So do you try to watch games or just watch highlights or what?
A: I watch games, but the funny part is, the way I watch games is I’ll look for techniques. I’ll look for how people fit on plays, how people are playing things, what the offense is running, how it affects the defense. Unfortunately, I can’t just watch a game just to watch it anymore. I always watch it critically, making comments on how people are doing, stuff like that.
Q: Describe the ultimate play you want to make.
A: It’s the fourth quarter, we’re up by 3, the other team is driving down the field, there’s a minute left in the game, they throw an incomplete pass, they’re on, let’s say the 40.
Q: Your 40 or their 40?
A: They’re on our 40.
Dean Buchan, who was sitting at his desk working on his computer: That’s pretty vivid.
A: I’ve relived this many times in my head. Everybody in the stands, everybody knows it’s a pass play. They hike the ball, I come off, I give ‘em a move, I’m coming, I’m coming, strip sack, recover the ball, game over. That’s one of my ideal plays if I ever have one.
Q: Has that happened yet?
A: Not yet. Hopefully it’ll come.
Q: Who’s a true freshman player who’s caught your eye?
A: Actually, there’s two guys that have really caught my eye. (Linebacker) Kyle Travis and (guard) Shaq Mason. Even though Shaq still has a lot to learn and stuff like that and he doesn’t get as much playing time as Kyle, because Kyle’s on special teams right now, I think both of them have done an excellent job when they’ve gotten a chance to get in the game to actually really do something. I think they will be big-time players and big-time leaders on the team when their time comes.
Q: What’s the funniest thing that’s happened on the practice field lately?
A: I would say some of the funniest things that happened for us now, not necessarily on the practice field, but say, in meetings, is Coach (Al) Groh’s jokes. Once in awhile, Coach Groh – and some of them are a little less appropriate than others – but he’ll always hit you every once in awhile with a joke or something, randomly, really, really funny. It’ll just be hilarious and we’ll be rolling laughing.
It’s kind of unexpected because, usually he’s more serious and very professional, but every once in awhile he’ll hit us with a joke and we’re all just kind of blown back by it. But it keeps the energy up. It keeps everything kind of fresh for us.
Q: Like, he’ll start off a meeting with a joke?
A: It’ll come out of nowhere he’ll be saying something about a play or something at the end of film, and he’ll just come out of left field with it and it’s kind of like you’re sitting there and you hear it, but you’re not really paying attention, you think like, Did he just say that?
Q: Like, ‘A man walks into a bar’ kind of a joke?
A: He’s done it all. He’s had those he’s had funny clips to show us. It’s pretty funny.

I think we need more deeper discusion on the Defense week in and week out.. Starting with Al Groh…
I am telling from what I have seen so far from this year I don’t think thtere is any improvment on Defense from last year… I think we are foolin our self’s with this..

What link Ken? The one on this thread? The one that’s 3 days old and is more a point on many schools. Which is fine as that is what recruiting news should be. My point is almost every headline topic he has is about Uga. Look at the one this morning. And the fact I question him about this and the fact he bans me from posting and doesn’t answer it tells me all I need to know. You can’t be fair and balanced when you are a graduate from a school and a big sports fan. And he proves this. Chip was the same way. I questioned him too and he blocked me when he was the recruiting guy and look what he does now. It’s a joke. And the fact one school in this state is ranked and the one on a downward decline gets 90% of discussion is a joke. I think you do a great job Ken and hope you stay covering Gt sports for as long as we can have you. You’re much better by leaps and bounds than the previous guy. I compare the Carvell situation to that of the abc news reporter guy saying his political pollsters were concerned about Obama’s polling numbers. They are suppose to be unbiased and not pick a side. But we all know how the mainstream media is. Sorry to interjeck politics but I am just tired of seeing UGA headlines every morning on the recruiting news and it’s almost always skewed to a positive for them. It seems the only time tech gets a front page headline, it’s something negative for us.

i just hope this feel good story continues. i quaked a bit as you were saying stuff like 7-0 start, top ten last week. dont want them too peak too early both in the polls and on the field, if you understand my concerns.

Ken, I know we’ve all told you this before, but your coverage on the team is really making this season 3 dimensional. Very enjoyable/informative.

This D is significantly better at playmaking. We still haven’t seen them put together a complete game yet, but I think they absolutely will, and that will truly be the story of the season.
Those sacks against UNC were complete domination, and I haven’t seen a Tech team do team defense like that in a while.

Jason Peters seems like a fun dude. This team generally seems so upbeat this season when I see them in interviews with Wes Durham (which, if yall are missing his interviews they’re great…I think they’re all on ramblinwreck.com ) and in the Q&A’s here. It kind of helps me just enjoy the great start to this season for what it is – a lot of FUN!

We took care of the demons (not Wake Forest) with the make-up victory over Kansas. Now we have N.C. State (who beat us last year too) on the road. Jackets, stay focused. This will be a tough game in a hostile environment. Yes, I know the Wolfpack is having a bit of down year, but they manhandled us last year (with Wilson, who is no longer there). The old fashioned one-game-at-a-time is certainly appropriate this year. We have that kind of team. Just stay focused guys and pay attention to the coaches.

Will, you think it’s bad for Tech at the AJC, you should try living in Augusta where the ONLY thing ever about Tech in the paper is from AP sources—-NEVER any kind of interview or in-depth article about the Jackets, even after a game. The Augusta paper sent somebody to Ole Miss to cover that game, but the only report on the Tech game IN ATLANTA was a wire report. And the day the three Tech players won conference honors for their play against UNC, one of the local stations didn’t even mention it, but covered those from UGA, Clemson, and USC who also won honors. Tech is TOTALLY ignored by the local media in Augusta.

Here’s what she wrote this morning about the GT-NCState game this weekend:
“Georgia Tech 38, NC State 28: If you think this is going to be a blowout, think again. No, NC State’s defense isn’t very good, and there are too many injuries to keep track of, but the Wolfpack will play with a purpose and Georgia Tech will be fortunate to leave Raleigh with a win.”

Folks, NCState’s Defense is in complete tatters.
And, the NCState players have “given up” on HC Tom O’Brien.
That was plainly obvious watching the NCState-Cincy game.
NCState has had 10 days off. They are DREADING playing GT.
This could be a COLOSSAL BEATDOWN by GT.

GT, our D has gotten SO much better from last year! We’ve made the stops when they were most needed! We have a ways to go, but Groh said that it takes 3 years to get this defense up to speed! I believe that we’re ahead of schedule on knowing where we’re to be and how we’re to react…our youth and size will have to develop….in time, I believe that they will!

Ken: I’m sure you are already somewhat aware of this, but I did want to communicate this just in case. As you have come to realize, engineers (and most GT fans/alums are engineers) tend to have negative and critical natures. Throw that into the mix with the way we generally have a chip on our shoulder about how much attention UGAG gets, and it really gives us an abrasive disposition sometimes with the local press folks. Again, we appreciate the work you are doing here, and please do not let our critical nature turn you against us as a group. It is just who we are. By the way, that is why we have the PERFECT head coach in PJ, because he lives with a “chip on his shoulder” also, and he fits our personality beautifully. Lastly, I realize that many of my brethren will probably not see the facts/truth behind some this post, but sometimes it is tough to look in the mirror and honestly evaluate yourself. I used to be that way, but after spending so much time on these blogs with my fellow Techsters, it is easy to see the constant negativeness and criticism we exude.

I agree with that. I thought Barnes would make more of a push and thought I read something about him working on his conditioning. I have seen Walls take on two lineman from time to time, though I am not in love with his tackling. He looks like he has trouble wrapping his arms around runners sometimes.

But back to the football team. I’ve thought that Barnes is actually getting more PT than last year. Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s my perception.
The stats about the D’s redzone % and 3rd down % tells you that they still have a lot of work to do. But they are still better than last year.
I’ve got a buddy that’s a State grad and he thinks the team is down on O’Brien because of his stance on Wilson. He’s prepared for a beat down this weekend. Let’s give it to them.

I’m all for a good beatdown. Last week’s close game was good for this team’s psyche as no doubt there will be a number of tight ones before it’s all said and done. But it’s hard not to have confidence in this team with this coach. Unless we shoot ourselves in the foot with turnovers, I don’t see any reason why this game should be close.

I don’t know how I missed seeing the blog on Bostic being reshirted, but I just now found it and read through the posts. I have a question for Ken or anybody reading this now. Ken, you said in that writeup that Bostic had not played any this year, but I am pretty sure he played some (perhaps not much) in the MTSU game, and possibly the WC game too. I realize that he can still be granted a medical redshirt even if he did play, but am I not correct? Didn’t he come in for at least a couple of plays in one or both of those two games?

A little off topic but I sure hope Clemson can put some points up on VT. Talk about a favorable schedule for VT, not much between them and an undefeated campaign except for Clem, us or perhaps home games against Miami and UNC. I think we’ll find out how good the Hokie defense is this weekend – or if Clemson’s offense is for real (sure seems to be). Clemson’s point totals so far this season are 43, 35, 38 and 35 with the latter two against Auburn and FSU. VT on the other hand has put up 66 (App St), then 17, 26 and 30. I see VT slowing Clemson down some….but not enough to win. I’m thinking something like 28-25 Clemson (sure hope so).

I’m thinking this game will be a colossal beat down as well.
The Wolfpack are down to the scrubs on the lines, just like Kansas. Current line is 9½, and I think even that is being generous.
I don’t think this game will even be about avenging last year, it’ll be about GT not taking their foot off the gas offensively and the D putting that complete game together.

The Augusta TV stations always play clips from Richt’s press conferences (NEVER any of Johnson’s). Every time I see Richt, he gets creepier and creepier to me. He shows no emotion whatsoever, and is actually pretty boring.

Did anyone see the way Peters “bent” the UNC running back backwards on their last possession? Excellent tackle and fierce penetration against the Tarheel lineman.
Jason Peters has made some fantastic plays on the D-line for us. Remember ‘09 against #4 VTech? Peters deflected a Taylor pass at the line of scrimmage then stretched out and made an interception. WOW!

… haven’t watched Pitt play in years before tonight. Great history with that football program though … from Glenn Scobey “Pop” Warner to Dan Marino to the present day. They also had GT’s number during some of the best Heisman years (1917-1919), defeating GT 2 times.
But here’s my favorite (with text extracted from Wikipedia): “The 1982 Sugar Bowl was highlighted by one of the most dramatic plays in Pitt history as Dan Marino hit a streaking John Brown on fourth down in the last seconds of the game for the go-ahead score against a Georgia team that featured Herschel Walker.”

Just watched the nightmare game in 91 on college classics. David Hendrix fumbles the ball at the tech 18 with 2 minutes left. That was a heartbreaker. Still stings to this day, pun intended. Last year’s stings too cause we had that game and made so many dumb mistakes and didn’t make it on 4th down twice early on.
