Brian Bohannon on Georgia Tech offense

Greetings-

Sorry for the delay. This took a little longer to put together than I anticipated. Anyway, quarterbacks and B-backs coach Brian Bohannon fielded questions about last Saturday’s game and the one coming up Tuesday after practice. Lots of interesting stuff about both games, David Sims and Tevin Washington and the offense in general.

Q: What’s your take on N.C. State?

A: They’re a good football team. They’ve had some tough injuries, but they’re a good football team and they came in here and they got after us pretty good a year ago and they’ve got some of those same guys there. Obviously, they’ve lost some key players and positions but they’re a good football team that got embarrassed on TV and they’re going to come back fighting like all get out to redeem themselves.

(Two cents: I am pretty miserable at predicting games, but I think the fact that the Wolfpack will have a lot to play for could well make the game closer than most Tech fans probably think, or at least they’ll give the Jackets more of a game than maybe most might expect looking at the numbers. The Cincinnati game says something about their team, but I wouldn’t think they will play as badly as that game.)

Q: How did  David Sims do against North Carolina? Coach (Paul) Johnson said he took all but one snap.

A: He did O.K. He did alright. That was his biggest workload. For all of them. The quarterback (Washington) took every rep. David took all but one rep but I think it was good for him. We hadn’t been in one of those (close games), but I think he did a good job. We won the game, and I thought our kid played their tails off, (but) I don’t think we were as sharp as maybe we would like to have been. A couple turnovers, penalty, key third down, there was just some things here and there if we could have executed even a little better… We left some points out there offensively.

(Two cents: Sims was much more productive in the second half than he was in the first. He had 15 yards on five carries in the first half, then eight carries for 56 yards, including a 22-yarder, in the second. He also threw a block that sprung Roddy Jones on his 48-yard run on the game-winning drive. I think coaches really want to see him bust some long gainers. I mean, of course they do, but I think they think he’s got it in him.)

Q: Is this maybe a week that, given N.C. State’s injuries on the line and its production from the outside linebackers, that David might get more carries?

A: I think a lot of that just depends on when you get into the game, what the flow of the game and what the flow of the defense (are), how they dictate what we’re going to do. And I think that’s the neat thing about what we do right now is you don’t know whose week it’s going to be. You get out there and you go play and Stephen might have a big game or Orwin (Smith) has a big game or Tevin.

Whoever it is, and we’ve got a good group of guys right now that are very unselfish and not worried about who gets what. They’re just out there trying to win. We’ll kind of play that see what they do and see how it unfolds.

(Two cents: It’s interesting – one of the biggest concerns prior to the season was who would replace all of the yards that Jonathan Dwyer and Anthony Allen gained out of the B-back spot. The answer, at least so far, is four or five guys.)

Q: Do you ever have an idea going into a game of who’s going to get a lot of touches?

A: Sometimes you have an idea, but you really don’t know until you get in the game and see how things, how it kind of flows. Once you get in the game and Coach (Paul Johnson) kind of gets in a rhythm of calling based on what they’re doing, then you kind of get an idea of what’s going to happen. We may have an idea but we don’t really ever know until you get into the game.

(Two cents: My prediction for Saturday is that Washington and Sims go above their season averages for carries, 12 and 11, respectively. Mostly basing that on last year’s game and the fact that N.C. State’s line is decimated.)

Q: With the North Carolina game, did the defensive scheming go the way you had anticipated, making Tevin try to beat them?

A:Yeah, maybe a little bit. I’m not sure that’s exactly it. They played the same way they’ve played for three years. They lined up the same. One thing they’ve done is they line up in their defense and you’ve got to go block ‘em. You’ve got to make some people miss and you’ve got to make some plays. And as things developed, Tevin was going to have to make some runs just the way things were unfolding.

I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a scheme to put the ball in his hands and make plays. I think that’s just the way the thing unfolded as the game went on. But every year we’ve played them, the quarterback has had to make some tough runs to win the game.

And I told him that at halftime I said, ‘You’re going to have to make some runs. I don’t know what play it’s going to be.’ It’s just, every year we’ve played them and you go back and look at the years with Josh, for us to win, he’s made some tough runs at critical times.

When you’re playing a good defense like that, you’re going to have to make some plays at times like that.

(Two cents: Part of me doesn’t understand the logic of why you’d keep doing something that, from a productivity and certainly a win-loss standpoint, hasn’t really worked for North Carolina. Tech has averaged 450 yards of total offense in the past three games, all Tech wins. But I think there’s a lot of sense in doing your thing and trying to do it well. Maybe doing something differently would simply be reactionary and would result in even worse performance. I’m going to guess that, if Tech put up low numbers against an opponent for two or three years in a row, Johnson wouldn’t try anything radically different with the offense.)

Q: Coach (Al) Groh said Monday that N.C. State is consistent in what they do offensively. Is the same true of the defense?

A: We only got one year with them so we haven’t faced them as much as maybe a North Carolina or somebody. Obviously, we expect what they did last year because they did a good job against us so I don’t know why they would change a whole lot of what they did given the success that they had a year ago. But you don’t ever know. Some [defensive] coordinators, they get ideas in their mind and want to try stuff. I would expect the same thing.

(Two cents: Kansas evidently did, showing a different look even before the game got out of hand. You could make the case that that’s an example of why doing one thing might be advantageous. Small sample size, of course.)

Q: How many times did you run the triple option Saturday?

A: I believe we ran it four or five times. Not a bunch.

(Two cents: Not sure what there is to say here. That was my question.)

Q: What’s a typical number?

A: It just depends. The way North Carolina, the way they were set up defensively and the way their scheme was, they were giving us some things other than that and that’s kind of the way it’s been some games. I think the Middle (Tennessee State) game, we probably ran it the most, but it hasn’t been a ton. It just kind of depends on what they’re giving us and what we can do.

(Two cents: It’s obviously early, and this isn’t a very novel observation, but it just seems like this offense is going to be very tough to stop. Maybe the answer is to take away the triple option and hopefully you have enough speed on the perimeter to limit tosses, options and play-action, but not every defense can do that. North Carolina kind of did it for a half – save the play-action pass to Hill, plus the Tar Heels got some help from Tech – but couldn’t sustain it for the whole game.

Q: Were there games last year you ran it 20-plus times?

A: Twenty would be a pretty high number. I think in the Middle game, we were probably around 10 or so. I can’t remember exact numbers. Depending how it’s going, you can get 15, 18 times, just depending on the flow of the game.

(Two cents: I was going to toss out a higher number. A big save from my colleague Larry Hartstein, whose reports for cbssports.com I recommend reading. I would not be good on “The Price is Right.” Speaking of which, I saw it the other day and a woman won four cars on one of the games. Must be a killer on taxes, though. And what do you do with four cars? I would hope to win a jet ski or maybe a giant television.)

Thanks for reading. Sorry it’s a little later than I intended. I’ll have something up after practice around 9.

Oh Bohannon is the man, he’s really getting the “system” down.
Love the comment:

That pretty much somes up how Tech is playing

Ken – I’m confused here. Is “running the triple option” defined strictly as the B-back dive fake, and then the QB read to keep and pitch to the A-back? If Washington were to keep instead of pitch, is that not strictly running the triple offense? In the UNC game, Tech obviously made a lot of plays without going through through that progression, with passes and quick tosses.

I think you close: TO is when QB runs 1 play with 3 options, B Back, keep, or pitch

They have not run that much, just set plays like toss sweep, or counter sweep, B-Back up the middle (no option, A-Backs are blocking)

NC Stete beat tech pretty good at home last year. But Russell Wilson was big key, he made a lot of plays on second effort. He’s real good.

Gannon has nice are and will go down field more the UNC’s QB, should be another close game for Tech, hope they pull it out

BigTimeTechFan – We ran the triple option in HS, the belly series out of the T-formation. If the QB gave the ball to the FB, it was still the triple option. What I guess I’m seeing is that Tech is using the same formation to run multiple offensive schemes. What I’m wondering is whether the linemen have been taught several new blocking techniques and assignments.

A couple of times against UNC, I saw the left A-back split out much further in the slot than usual.

Navy has a wrinkle where one of the A-backs goes in motion and then stops and lines up as a tailback. Their A-backs also line up tight to the OT’s, usually directly behind them, a bit different from Tech.

I agree with you Ken. This game could end up closer than many Tech fans think. NC State is like a wounded and cornered animal. I’m sure they’ll come out fighting and trying to avenge last weeks debacle. I watched that game. State looked like they were sleep walking. If we let them hang around, look out.

That said, if Tech can step on them early and keep their foot on the Pack’s neck, with their injuries, things could get out of hand.

If you look at the Carolina video from last week, we ran a lot of unbalanced sets rather than starting out in our normal TO formation. My guess is that, depending on what Tenuta starts to throw at us, Paul Johnson has already devised a few tricks up his sleeve based on how the Jackets were defended from last season. With so many injuries on NC State’s defense coming into Saturday’s game, I suspect a lot of misdirection to see how they respond and then try to hit them with the pass early because they may sell out to stop the run on first and second downs.

Interesting that GT is ranked the lowest by AP voters in their own state than anywhere else in the county. The state of Georgia AP voters does not have GT ranked. If you did not think a UGA bias existed before, nothing is more obvious than this. Teams are usually ranked higher in their own state dur to the inherent bias and locals wanting to see their teams ranked higher. Usually helps the media in the state also because they would be covering a “higher” ranked team.

Speaking of formations—there’s one where Tech has the standard B-back and two A-back configuration but they put both WR to one side of the field. Technically the inside WR is not an eligible receiver as he’s “covered” by the outside receiver and the off-side tackle is now an eligible receiver. I don’t know if one day CPJ will throw a ball to that tackle, but what’s more interesting is that the defense puts a LB out there to cover. There’s nothing to cover unless it’s a quick pass to the outside receiver and you have a blocker out there. Any thoughts from ye formation aficionados?

If Tevin carries it on the follow play, it is not a triple option, so that would not count. The TO is strictly a give/fake to FB up the middle, then ridng down the line and either cutting up field if the defense takes the pitch man or pitching it if the defense crashes on the QB. They only count that specific play as running the TO. All the toss sweep or straight FB dives etc. don’t count.

The thing to remember about David Sims is that this will only be his 5th game as a RB. Basically a freshman playing a brand new position. He’s getting better and better with every rep.

As Coach said, with every game the competition gets ratcheted up a notch. Even if NC State looks down, they were a dominate team last year and still have some talent. And it’s our first ACC away game. Don’t put the ball on the carpet and get after the QB and we will be fine.

Yeah, that wiki explanation is really good. GT & CPJ use the veer option. It originated @ the University of Houston in the late 50’s or very early 60’s. My high school coach ran the Houston veer (his name for it?) with the traditional single wing T formation. (A tight end, 1 flanker, 2 halfbacks, 1 fullback-inverted from the wishbone-and of course the quarterback-his name was Johnny Sinclair and HE had over 2,000 yards running and passing both and signed a scholarship with GT, but destroyed a knee in the frosh game. My sophomore year. We beat Billy Lotheridge @ Gainesville that year & had 9 seniors get college schollys.) Harry Mehre with AJ (pm paper), former coach @ UGA I think called it the best high team he ever heard of and thought we could have beaten a lot of college games. Sorry for rambling @ bragging. Guess my point is the triple option has been around for quite some time & is a terrific system when used properly.

Honest and Frank you’re right. the game was close at the half. i mis-remembered it, as roger clemens might say.
as stated above, the triple option is a specific play. the quarterback puts the ball in the b-back’s belly as he runs into the line and makes a read (1) to either let him take it or pull it back. if he pulls it, he has the option to either keep it (2) or pitch to the trailing a-back (3).

This defense uses lighter, faster DE’s and huge mobile (agile) NT’s to occupy at least 2 blockers & if they’re good enough 3 at times. Thus freeing up 2 middle LB’s (no one blocking them) to make plays. We will have a couple of bigun’s in time.

Now if feel dumb for having brought up the question which boils down to “when is the triple option not the triple option”. It’s interesting when a triple option team lines up normally (for them) and then runs several different plays that are not the TO. That probably throws the defense off a bit. Obviously, CPJ is way ahead of me on that.

“Re the previous comment about both WRs to one side of the field, the 2nd WR and the A-back are in a double-slot formation, with neither on the line of scrimmage.”

Also, one of the A-backs must move to the line of scrimmage to leave only 4 guys in the backfield.

Yeah I saw that CPJ was mentioned also. What we are seeing is the beauty of the system. No matter what formation you see, the TO is there & the D must stay home and be very disciplined to not go chasing after a wild goose to stop it. That’s what UI did in the Orange Bowl. I wouldn’t be surprised it CPJ isn’t a Mensa. He uses s handful of formations with many choices. I know everyone has seen he doesn’t use play sheet.

Anon, I’ve seen them do that too where the inside WR drops back to a slot position and the off-side A back moves onto the line as technically a TE. You have to have 7 on the line and if both A-backs are behind the line along with the B-back then both WR must be on the line which the inside guy (if they’re both on the same side) is not an eligible receiver. I’ve not seen Tech pass from this formation yet, but it’s interesting that the defense spreads out as if to cover the guy even though the inside WR cannot go out for a pass.

THe B back plays always work better in the 2nd half. Tired Ds. Happen every year. Well for that matter the whole offense runs better in 2nd half. Same reason.
And this will NOT be a walkover. I agree – State will be mad as heck. And at home. Big test.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see a bit of Smith at QB in 2nd half along with Zenon at A back. Smith’s bigger and more bruising than Tevan and Zenon can scoot around corners against tired D.
And yes, if the back goes wide and B gtes ball in belly as QB reads, it’s still triple option.
My 2 cents.

I do not care if Laskey calls a fair catch every single punt, just catch the ball like your life depended on it and let the offense take it from there. Also, Laskey watching footage of Kelly Rhino would be useless, because Rhino played when the defense had to give him a 3 yard halo by rule. That rule is gone now because of returners like Rhino who knew that he could always get positive yardage because the defenders could not get near him.

1 4 – It has been a mystery to me for many decades why I did that. Thinking back on it now, since we’ve been discussing the triple option, I played at DE in practice, assigned to tackle the QB on every play, so they could practice the pitch. Rather than KO our own QB repeatedly, I’d just quickly front up to him and wrap my arms around him. That must have been what led me to make that “dream tackle” on the kickoff. It just seemed the thing to do, without thinking about it. I ran back to the sidelines, and the coaches were just staring at me, puzzled.

NC State is 109th in the nation in rushing. Glennon has a great arm and throws a good looking pass. He’s thrown for 1079 yards this season. He threw for over 300 yards against Wake and Cincinnati. He could make us look real bad in a hurry. TJ Graham is a very fast, dangerous receiver. Without a running game though, we might get double digit sacks.
With the depleted defensive personnel, we might get double digit yards per carry and double digit touchdowns.
Tom O’Brien is a good coach and he’ll have the Wolfpack ready.

I am as optimistic as anyone about this season and about the NC State game. But in the back of my mind there is this thought that a good QB and WR could potentially hit us where we are weak. It’s certainly happened before. Thankfully, this year’s team is not what it once was. Yet already this year our opponents have had some success against us with certain pass plays. If NC State is able to capitalize on that for an entire game, it could be a tough battle. We need to make sure we get pressure on Glennon and not lose sight of containing the run in spite of the ineffectiveness of their ground game thus far. If we take care of business defensively, I believe we will have a successful game. I certainly hope to see our offense eliminate some of the mistakes and exert more dominance this week than last. And we have yet to see the big difference special teams play can make on a game. Let’s get it done, boys. You can do it! GO JACKETS!!!

Venters got a huge Strike Out i run lead 2 out bases loaded. I know we’ve all been pretty harsh on them, but they had some big injuries

Interesting perspective Stephen. I’d say execute CPJ’s game plan for NCST and we have a good chance to win. I’m sure your questions about weaknesses will be addressed. Bless your heart and thanks for blogging. THWG! Go Tech!

1 4 GT – hopefully i understand your issue. i think to read additional comments after you post something, you have to refresh. it’s that way with my browser and i think with most anyone’s. i’d think if you just stayed on the page and kept refreshing, you’d see newer comments as they were made.
am i not understanding the issue correctly? thanks.
new post up, by the way.

Ken, you got it right. I try refreshing; sometimes it works and sometimes not.. Ya’ll couldn’t set these blog sites up like a chat room? We all appreciate your good work. Go home to your family. Phillies just tied the Braves. Kimbrell is used up this year. Loaded ‘em up twice with walks–Braves coming up for their 9th inning try—WALK OFF!

@Stephen CC … I understand your point about a good QB and receiver being able to “light it up” against our defense, but I don’t think that would necessarily result in defeat. I think our defense’s chances of stopping one or two players is much better than the opponents’ defenses stopping all of our offensive weapons. It would be nice to win more games by 40+ point margins, but as CPJ is fond of saying, 35 is more than 34 … so as long as we score one more than the other guy, I’ll be happy.

Flowery Branch Yellow Jacket, I wholeheartedly agree. I just don’t want to see us lose for reasons that could have been foreseen (which Tech has done before in the not too distant past). And I’m not saying that is likely to happen this week. I just said it was a thought in the back of my mind. I’m with you though, that as long as we win, I’ll be happy. Because we certainly should win this one.

I’m nervous about going up aainst Tenuta. I fear he might still be POed that we didn’t hire him when Gailey “left.”

I was pleased that the Special Teams came through with that blocked punt. Maybe that will give them confidence to play better. If we lose this year, it will likely be because of Special Teams, Defense, and/or Turnovers.
