Bostic likely to redshirt for Georgia Tech

Greetings-

Please read at your leisure the notes for Thursday’s paper. The big news is that it looks like B.J. Bostic is likely going to redshirt. The sophomore A-back had yet to play this season with a right arm injury. Coaches will have to make a decision in the near future regarding Vad Lee, also. Thanks for reading.

1. The Andy McCollum reunion tour concludes Saturday in Raleigh with Georgia Tech’s game against N.C. State. Georgia Tech’s defensive line coach returned three weeks ago to Middle Tennessee State, where he was head coach 1999 to 2005 and an assistant several years prior.

He was N.C. State’s linebackers coach 2007-2009 before Tech hired the Marietta High grad to be line coach and recruiting coordinator. It’ll be his first time back at Carter-Finley Stadium since leaving.

“Some of the greatest people I’ve been around,” McCollum said. “I know how passionate their fans are and I know what kind of enthusiasm it’s going to be.”

With his state ties, McCollum recruited several N.C State players from Georgia, including three starting offensive linemen that he’ll be coaching his players to beat – guards Duran Christophe (Woodstock High) and Zach Allen (Tift County High) and center Camden Wentz (Lassiter High). McCollum said he’s stayed in touch with players that he either recruited or coached.

“It’s a good bunch of kids,” McCollum said.

McCollum’s other previous employers – UTEP, Baylor and the Tennessee Titans – do not figure to come up on Tech’s schedule anytime soon.

(McCollum is a guy anybody would enjoy talking to. Good storyteller and very personable. I can see why he’d be such a good recruiter.)

2. Friday, coach Paul Johnson said he thinks A-back B.J. Bostic will redshirt. Bostic, who figured to be in the rotation coming into the season, suffered a right arm injury in preseason camp and has yet to play. Having played as a true freshman a year ago, Bostic will have three years of eligibility remaining starting with the 2012 season.

Johnson also said the time is approaching to decide on a redshirt for freshman quarterback Vad Lee.

“Hopefully we can go through the year like we’re going right now with him, and he can take reps and learn and be able to compete in the spring,” Johnson said.

The kickoff return team will have new personnel in the back, possibly including Tony Zenon as a replacement for returner Orwin Smith.

“Just to see if we can get something going,” Johnson said.

Four of Tech’s last nine kickoff returns have not gotten past the 19-yard line, prompting the change.

(The Bostic move makes sense, and I won’t be surprised if/when Lee gets redshirted, too. We’ll see how the kickoffs fare on Saturday. Another big concern for Tech is containing N.C. State return man T.J. Graham. See below.)

3. Kicker Justin Moore said it has been frustrating not being able to transfer good weeks of practice kickoffs into the games.

“The game is just a whole different story, especially the opening kick,” he said. “You’re just so jacked up that you just have to get back there and take a few deep breaths and calm yourself.”

Moore, who has made three of his last four field-goal attempts and all 28 of his point-after tries, has had trouble getting distance on the kickoffs. Moore said he thought he was having trouble with timing and the steps in his run-up to the ball.

“But I think I’ll get there very soon, because I know I have to,” Moore said.

(Perhaps Saturday will be the breakthrough game for Moore, yet another Yellow Jacket from Marist.)

4. A-back and team captain Roddy Jones said he has monitored the team for signs of complacency or satisfaction after starting 4-0 and earning a No. 21 ranking in both polls. He hasn’t detected anything, which he partly attributes to strong leadership in all of the position groups.

Jones said that “the group of guys that we’ve got right now is a group that just works hard.”

(A good point by Jones. The receivers have Tyler Melton, the backs have Jones and Tevin Washington, the offensive line has Omoregie Uzzi, the defensive line has Jason Peters and Logan Walls, the linebackers have Steven Sylvester and Julian Burnett, both of whom are captains, and the secondary has Michael Peterson and Rashaad Reid. There’s only six starting seniors, but they’re dispersed almost evenly. Uzzi, Burnett and Washington are not seniors, I realize, but are often talked about as leaders.)

5. Guard Omoregie Uzzi, who has been named the ACC offensive lineman for the past two weeks, has not escaped the attention of N.C. State coach Tom O’Brien.

“He comes off the ball, he’s low, he gets into his blocks and he stays on his blocks and he knocks people down,” O’Brien said on the ACC coaches teleconference Wednesday. “He’s an impressive guy.”

6. Johnson on a reported crime wave of T’s being taken from campus buildings: “I don’t have any of them.” … Mike Patrick and Craig James will broadcast Saturday’s game for ABC and ESPN.

Thanks for reading. Will have something up Thursday morning. I think a Q&A with Jason Peters.

Thats a shame for Bostic. However, it does look like Tech has a lot of talent at the A back spot right now. Orwin Smith looks great, Roddy Jones is solid, and Tony Zenon has been great so far as a freshman. Hopefully the team won’t lose any of these guys to injury and manage a year without Bostic.

Well better for BJ to redshirt then to have what is happening at UGA. 2 more players transferring off the Dawgs.

I for one am glad that this team has great leaders this year . Helps to keep their head clear . Like CPJ says , Y’all aint done nothing yet . Remain humble , keep it steady , keep working hard and eliminate the mistakes .

And another thing . I like seeing our team score and act like they have been there before .

Now I know why UGA didn’t mind players getting arrested! it was easier to keep them on the team when they were handcuffed or in a jail cell.

Ken – Just an observation. If you go back to the Kansas game when the ball was finally kicked into the end zone on a kick off by Moore – you’ll see the placement of the ball on the tee was almost in an upright position and when kicked a about a third of the way from the ground up – it produced more of a line drive that carried it into the end zone. On most other kicks – the ball has been placed on the tee with a somewhat backward slant toward the kicker which allows the kicker to get up under the ball and loft it up in the air so that it makes it only to the 10 yard line or so. You might check back on the films to verify. Just saying………..

Thanks Ken! I hate it for Bostic, he’s a great kid and one heck of an athlete. Hopefully the red shirt will allow for him to come back even better than ever.

Thanks for the great work Ken! You’re the top man on the favorites list.

Tough luck for Bostic, might work out though as Roddy graduates, or shall I say runs out of eligibility (good luck with the masters Roddy!) Peeples is in his last year as well.

Zenon returning kicks sounds good if he blows by folks but the little guys scare me unless he can take a lick and hold onto the ball.

If the kickers are doing it in practice it will, as they say in Jamaica, “soon come”:))

Leadership or the lack thereof was certainly a problem last year and clearly not this year. Excellent upperclassmen working hard to finish well. Cant beat that!

Last week I called it 35-24 Tech, but NCST is so beat up on the defensive side I think we may have another 600+ yards and 45+ points. Could be David Sims big game given the weak D line for State.

This week I say 45-20 Jackets roll again!!!

THWG!

I most certainly never have been nor ever will be. My two favorite teams are Georgia Tech and WHOEVER is playing Georgia! One day maybe, you’ll accept that. Either way, GO JACKETS!

Next year the Bostic and Zenon duo represent a couple of serious burners. Given the chance on a regular basis, I’m looking forward to what he can do. CPJ doesn’t have much patience for freshman mistakes. I remember Bostic fumbling once last year…then you didn’t see much of him. Can’t wait to see him flash the speed.

A bit sorry to hear about Bostic, great player. I thought he would be big time this year.
Don’t let it get you down, work hard, and next year you will have fun and we will too, no doubt!!
Our A-backs are doing a great job this year, BJ would have been right there with them. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing Bostic on the field next year!!

enough about reunions with coaches, alot of GT fans loved Tenuta but we don’t wish him well in this upcoming game. Coaches are fired or come and go and so what…This won’t be a kumbaya in Raleigh. NC ST fans and team have been running their mouths on radio and media in NC about this game and want to beat GT badly. Having lost as well to NC St last yr, GT needs to play hard and fight for every point.

Athens, we have a problem...

It sure would be nice to get Bostic and Lee redshirted. My concern is the possibility of an injury at the QB or A-back position. However, you have to do what’s best for these kids. Another year of eligibility is probably in their best interest.

Did you ever find the list of starters on the kickoff return team from last week?

I had trouble figuring out who was where in the front 5 and the middle guy of the 3 men on the 30 yard line (off the TV, of course)

Please let me know if you have them.

Thanks
