Greetings-
A few points from Paul Johnson’s news conference.
1. Johnson said he was thinking this morning about the nature of this year’s offense, and how it’s “kind of unique” because there isn’t a player that needs to have the ball like Jonathan Dwyer or Anthony Allen. The team is more athletic across the board, but Johnson doesn’t feel the need to scheme the offense to get one particular player a lot of touches.
“If they want to take away David Sims, then, O.K., we’ll give it to Orwin Smith,” he said. “If they want to take away Orwin, we’ll do whatever. It isn’t so much tweaking it to get the ball to certain individuals as it is kind of running the system.”
2. Johnson noted that Tony Zenon didn’t get many snaps Saturday against North Carolina, calling it an oversight.
“We need to get him in some,” he said.
3. In response to a question about the Russell Wilson situation over the summer that led him to transfer from N.C. State to Wisconsin, Johnson said he has had players who played for the baseball team (Roddy Jones played for the Tech baseball team in 2010) but never one who wanted to play minor league baseball over the summer. He said he didn’t know what he’d do if the situation arose.
“I’m not touching that one,” he said.
4. Johnson stressed that the team hasn’t accomplished anything yet, a message players I’m guessing players have heard.
“All they have to do is look and see we’ve played a third of the season,” he said. “You’d better have laser vision, tunnel vision, one game at a time. That’s the way you’ve got to play the game.”
5. Johnson said guard Omoregie Uzzi is moving better and is lighter than a year ago, but is also simply stronger, more mature and more knowledgeable in the offense.
6. Jeff Greene, who sat out Saturday’s game with an injury, practiced Monday and will play Saturday. The kickoff specialist spot between Chandler Anderson and Justin Moore will be determined again in practice this week. Johnson wasn’t happy with the kicking game in general, as well as the kickoff return team.
7. Johnson said quarterback Tevin Washington has played well and done a good job of distributing the ball. Johnson said that quarterbacks “very seldom” audible. They occasionally will change the direction of a play and sometimes have an “either-or” call. Said Johnson, “He’s dine a nice job on that.”
Johnson also pointed out that the offense hasn’t run the triple-option play much because defenses are geared to stop it.
Thanks for reading. I’ll post practice notes 9-ish.

I’m just surprised to read that CPJ would actually bother to try and get a guy like Ant Allen the ball more. I suppose it would just be to make the best use of him and not because he is worried about a star player getting grumpy.

I like the distribution of the ball. Having a balanced attack will reap better rewards than just having one guy with 1300 yds. Hill’s dropped pass kept him from leading the nation in receiving yards. Looking for Tech to put up big numbers on NCST.

On another note, due to the lack of success of our kicking game, I’m surprised CPJ hasn’t gone with a classic “onside kick” to open the game or post-score KO… OR a fake punt / pooch kick – something creative to mask our incompetent skills.

Really enjoy and appreciate your posts Ken, THANKS!!! There is a great likely hood that the only way this team will lose is if it beats itself with turn overs. If we protect the ball I don’t see anybody stopping this very diverse offense. Tevin Washington is really coming into his own, and so we haven’t heard about Vad Lee lately. What a luxury to be able to red shirt him. Go JACKETS!! This team is so much fun to watch. No 5 star players (unlike UGA) but one helluva 5 star coach!!!

Ken (or anyone else on the board), does anyone do a statistical review of suspected play calling for our offense? If we were a pro-style-team that ran multiple offense with a thick playbook it would be an unreasonable thought. However, a breakdown of Pass, Play-Action Pass, Triple Option, Toss Sweep, QB Sneak, Counter, etc would be very revealing. Didn’t CPJ say we only ran 10 base plays? Is that a “From the Rumble Seat” type analysis we could talk those guys into doing?

Hey Dawgs,
Our schedule is in fact easy. You guys had a chance to slap an over-ranked-bound-to-be-undefeated team all the way back to Boise. You failed. That over ranked team was much better than you. So are the Jackets.
You’ll fail again in November against another undefeated and over-ranked team.
Even if we go undefeated, we don’t deserve to be ranked with LSU. But we still will be better than you. And that just makes my whole season a little bit better.

Kickoffs suck. I do not understand why Johnson will not go give a grant to one of the top 10 kickoff guys in the country. Two of the top defensive players on a team are the kickoff guy and the punter. Both should be top recruits with a full grant.

It has always been about ‘running the offense’. That’s what is so great about ‘the offense’. The only thing unique about it – and irreplaceable – is the Coach.
No cheat-sheets, no notes. I wonder why he even wears a headset. Probably so someone in the box can remind him how many timeouts are left and to remember to shake hands with the opposing coach after the game.

I think Miami is still a pretty good team…so they let down after the Ohio State game and lost to Kansas State…I’m pretty sure K-State has 80-something scholarhship players, a coaching staff, and scouting reports. I’m pretty sure they play in a BCS conference. Weaker teams sometimes updump stronger teams…happens every Saturday…that’s why they are called ‘upsets.’ MTSU over GT was plenty of people’s upset pick of the week in week 2, and Tech destroyed them…a couple of the ESPN talking heads picked UNC over Tech, and Tech was clearly the better team, although our mistakes kept it closer than it needed to be. But I like the way our schedule plays out…Miami is btetter than Virghinia, Clemson is better than Miami, and V-Tech is the best team we will play this year.

Johnson is being disingenuous when he says he’s not running the triple option as much this season because teams are geared to stop it. He simply doesn’t trust Washington to make the quick reads which are necessary (he did the same thing with Nesbitt, for the most part). The primary theory behind Johnson’s offense is, whatever the defense does, he has the antidote. So far this season, he’s trying to make Washington’s job as easy as possible.

One of the things I like most about Coach Johnson is that he doesn’t mince words and speaks honestly and directly. We’re lucky to have Coach and Ken, too.

GT71 – for what it’s worth, i think he gets a good bit of help from his assistants in the press box, Buzz Preston, Brian Bohannon and Todd Spencer. they’re feeding him information on how the defense is reacting to certain plays, which helps him to know how to tweak or counter.

Johnson isn’t running the as much because he hasn’t had to. Last time I looked Tech was 4-0, and for the most part hasn’t even been that closely contested. To say he is being “disingenuous” is simply incorrect. Washington has shown he can make the reads and get it right, though I would agree he’s kept it a couple of times when he should’ve pitched it. That’s the nature of the position in this offense. There is no evidence CPJ is protecting anyone, and the fact that we have better balance and play distribution than we’ve had in years proves the versatility of the scheme and the quality of athletes we’re getting.

I really like this team. For one reason, its a TEAM. Sure i love having a star player here and there but this team gets it. They don’t have to have that 5 star recruit that gets the ball 100 times a game. I love the way the team is playing. Everyone is getting the ball when they are supposed to get it. And they are all playing super well. How about Stephen Hill? looking like Calvin Johnson out there. and smith and Sims are playing great and of course i love to see Roddy Jones break for a TD out on the edge. and the Defense has really stepped it up but they aren’t quite great yet but much better effort than last year. this team can do great things just depends on how far they want to go. headley ALL offenses rely on some kind of “gimmicks” or tricks. That’s what the game is all about—-trying to trick the other team into not making the appropriate play on defense to stop you. And if the “trick” doesn’t work, then it usually boils down to a battle of wills, agility, speed, and power. For instance UGA “tricked” Boise State on the TD run by Boynton (or whatever his name is) and then he turned on the speed to finish it off.

Then when you have to play an SEC team ( UGA ) or a bowl team with time to prepare for the gimmick ( Iowa ) you get an unholy beat down.
Enjoy your success in the minor leagues of football.

Super – Yes, home based again back here since Jan.1, 1980. I stilled traveled on extended assignments a lot, including a 6 month stint of November-May in the East Midlands in England. I kept a thermometer on the nightstand because my frugal landlord controlled the flow to the radiators. I woke up one morning and it was 44 degrees. Usually, it was in the more moderate low to mid-50s, ideal for English room-temperature beer.

headley, although Iowa definitely had the discipline on D to beat us, it wasn’t because of the time to prepare. They would probably have done the same with only one week off. They had the best overall defense of any team Tech has played since CPJ arrived. The deal with the “time enough to prepare” though is hogwash. The problem with too much time between games is that the offense loses their rhythm. This offense thrives on continuity and too much time off destroys that.

IMHO, what has really hurt Tech season ticket sales is that required contribution in order to buy seats. Delbert, I know the mutt trolls thrive on making fun of this, but I wish he would re-institute the “family package” deal. One of my nieces here in Augusta took advantage of that several times in the past; with a family of 4, adding in the expense of driving up from Augusta, it’s just impossible for her, her husband, and their two kids to attend games. They are BIG Tech fans, but that just doesn’t fit into their budget. They did decide to bite the bullet for the UGA game this year though. I ordered them tickets on Sunday—-$324.00 total. I guess I won’t be getting a Christmas present from them this year. LOL

When I played, the hard-plastic shell Riddell helmets had a 4-vertical strap webbing design, with a circumferential strap around the forehead and back of the head. Other than leather around the ears, there was no other padding. The strap system simply distributed the shock of impact and hardly lessened it. The internal padding is completely different today, but the problem is shock absorption. Motorcycle helmets (I wear the hull helmet with flip-up visor) are designed to crush on impact, which absorbs most of the shock. Football may eventually have to adopt a similar helmet design to protect against concussions, which cause brain injury.

They were padded using strips of leather all over the insides surrounding some softer stuff, probably flax or some material, that absorbed some of the shock. Those Riddells were painful when you got hit. As an end on defense and offense, I took a pounding on offense in practice. Out initial defensive move in the 5-4 DE position was to deliver a direct shot to the helmet of the offensive player using the heel of both hands to “disorient” him. I’ll say it was disorienting; I’d feel it all the way down the neck. It would not only be 15 yards today, but disqualification as well.

Hey fellow fans. H2H is a serious issue — its not the concussions that is the problem. It’s the axial load caused by lower the head and causing huge compression forces on the cervical spine (NECK). This is really the only way you can break your neck playing football. LOWERING your head is a BAD thing not because of concussions but because it could make you a quadriplegic. I don’t think that call was right, shoulder definitively hit first — but I understand the rule.

No one is saying H2H isn’t serious – we all know it is. What we’re saying is it was a very bad call. I didn’t play college ball, but you know right away when an INTENTIONAL H2H happens – and that should be a penalty and ejection, maybe suspension. But in the heat of the moment, lot’s of stuff just happns and the refs should be good enough to know the difference and react – or not. This particular play happened within a few feet of the guy. 2006 jacket grad – It’s both. Repeated concussion brain injuries can eventually cause early-onset dementia, Parkinson’s-like symptoms, depression and other disorders. The compression of the spine is the immediately disabling injury, certainly. There has to be some change in the technology. My full-face motorcycle helmet protects against both, to some extent, since it not does the shell crush on impact, the shoulder muscles (and my padded jacket) help reduce the axial compression load on the spine.
There surely must be multiple studies and experimentation ongoing with the problems. NASCAR adopted the HANS devices for all of their race cars, and it has been effective.

Guys—I too played starting in the 5th grade and as I recall our helmets were much the same in HS. Suspension webbing with semi soft rubber padding the edges and the ear holes. We were not coached to head slap like Deacon Jones did. NFL even made a penalty for it to “honor” Deacon. I played O & D tackle & had to stop in my sophomore year due to injury. I had 2 dreams–to play for Bobby Dodd or be a “Chinese Bandit” for Paul Dietzel.

The only times I’ve been KO’d was a head-to-head collision at 1st base in a Pony League and being thrown from a bicycle down the side of an elevated road where my forehead met a very large rock. The most serious (so far) injury from football was having my head forced down in a head-to-head collision which injured my neck at the top of the spine. Still have problems with that. I had a spinal tap and brain CT scans about 25 years ago for it.

The only time I was KO’ed was a concussion from my face/head making the windshield look a 1/2 a basketball from the inside in a wreck in a Corvette. The front end was destroyed. A police “expert” accident investigator told me I probably would not have lived thru it in a metal car. I was only going about 45mph.& it took them an hour to get me out of the car. I have wondered if they couldn’t make a football helmet that would do something similar or maybe be like the safer barrier at the NASCAR tracks.

Was anybody at the game last week? The kicking game sucks….real bad. Our pass defense isn’t much better. Offense is top 10….Kicking game is about 110th. pass defense is about 65, punt return is about 115th. We couldn’t run a punt back if the other team ran off the field. Our coverage teams don’t have clue about what they are suppose to be doing. We have players who don’t know weather to down the ball or block on plays or return the ball. Remember..Blewet…his teams couldn’t get the ball in bounds. This team can’t do special teams in any way. The ACC is really a weak conference vs the SEC in football. Look at Georgia, their National Champions….opps…they suck…year after year after year after year. Their supporters actually think they are going to win their division or the national championship every year. If Tech wins 8 games it will be a good season…. 9 games will be exceptional. I just think that special team play will cost us games against good teams.

Supersize – At night, especially in the fall and winter, the stations that could be picked up in the evening were what is is now called “clear channel” stations, who were authorized to run high power at night. Absorption of AM radio frequencies are absorbed by the lowest level of the ionosphere during the day, and it disappears at night. WSB was one, and WLS in Chicago, and WOR in NY, and several other regional stations. New Orleans had one, but I don’t recall the call letters; WLW, maybe. During the day on Saturdays, I used to take my little transistor radio out to the telephone pole in the front yard and hold it next to the steel guy cable to pick up Tech games on WGST. Georgia games were no problem, since they ran high power night and day on WSB.

14 – That’s right, Hornung was a kicker, among his other abilities. I watched a game between the Packers and the Bears, I believe, and it is the only time I’ve ever seen the NFL “Free Kick” rule applied. With less than a minute left in the 1st half, Chicago was backed up near their goal line and punted. The Packers fielded the punt with a fair catch around the Bears 45. They elected to free kick, and Hornung set the ball on the kicking tee, backed up several yards, and he made it for a field goal.

The 1990 UNC and VT games were typical of way too many Tech teams—-playing down to the competition and keeping us all on edge. Are you completely ambulatory now, or do you require wheelchair or crutches. Not trying to be even nosier, but thought you might like to know about handicap access for the games, if you need it. I take a wheelchair bound friend to some of the games. He doesn’t mind at all “climbing” up to my seats on row 26, so we don’t bother with the handicap seating areas. But we do use the handicap parking spaces over by the student center. In the past they have provided free shuttle service with golf-carts. This year they have buses with wheelchair lifts, and they run them to gates 1 and 10, free to all who need them and for whoever is with them…..VERY VERY good arrangement. Parking in that area, like just about every other place, is 20 bucks, although they offer a season parking pass which may be cheaper per game.

We just had the last pine tree removed from the yard a week ago. Very big, too close to the front of the house. The job was amazing. The big truck with the hydraulic extension lifted it, cut off at the ground with a chain saw, swung it about 120 degrees out to the street, and they fed the whole thing into a shredder. They had this handy-dandy “tank” that had an attachment for a grappling thingy that pulled the tree at an angle so it could be eaten by the shredder, and a smaller remote-controlled tank with stump grinder and dozer/front end loader attachments.

I think I’m gonna drop out of watching Tech football for the rest of the season. Any Tech team that would change the color of their jersey numbers I don’t want to give the time of day to. What they decided to do is dorky for Tech. I cannot accept colors of numbers on jerseys changing as leaves do in the Fall. I also don’t agree with the hiring of a basketball coach other than Mark price, so I don’t think I’ll watch Tech basketball under Brian Gregory. Tech is not the same as when I was going there. I think they make lousy sports decisions, such as the decision to create “Buzz” w/o asking the opinions of all alumni about this. I still will retain an education from there though.
