Greetings-
A few points from Paul Johnson’s news conference.
1. Johnson said he was thinking this morning about the nature of this year’s offense, and how it’s “kind of unique” because there isn’t a player that needs to have the ball like Jonathan Dwyer or Anthony Allen. The team is more athletic across the board, but Johnson doesn’t feel the need to scheme the offense to get one particular player a lot of touches.
“If they want to take away David Sims, then, O.K., we’ll give it to Orwin Smith,” he said. “If they want to take away Orwin, we’ll do whatever. It isn’t so much tweaking it to get the ball to certain individuals as it is kind of running the system.”
2. Johnson noted that Tony Zenon didn’t get many snaps Saturday against North Carolina, calling it an oversight.
“We need to get him in some,” he said.
3. In response to a question about the Russell Wilson situation over the summer that led him to transfer from N.C. State to Wisconsin, Johnson said he has had players who played for the baseball team (Roddy Jones played for the Tech baseball team in 2010) but never one who wanted to play minor league baseball over the summer. He said he didn’t know what he’d do if the situation arose.
“I’m not touching that one,” he said.
4. Johnson stressed that the team hasn’t accomplished anything yet, a message players I’m guessing players have heard.
“All they have to do is look and see we’ve played a third of the season,” he said. “You’d better have laser vision, tunnel vision, one game at a time. That’s the way you’ve got to play the game.”
5. Johnson said guard Omoregie Uzzi is moving better and is lighter than a year ago, but is also simply stronger, more mature and more knowledgeable in the offense.
6. Jeff Greene, who sat out Saturday’s game with an injury, practiced Monday and will play Saturday. The kickoff specialist spot between Chandler Anderson and Justin Moore will be determined again in practice this week. Johnson wasn’t happy with the kicking game in general, as well as the kickoff return team.
7. Johnson said quarterback Tevin Washington has played well and done a good job of distributing the ball. Johnson said that quarterbacks “very seldom” audible. They occasionally will change the direction of a play and sometimes have an “either-or” call. Said Johnson, “He’s dine a nice job on that.”
Johnson also pointed out that the offense hasn’t run the triple-option play much because defenses are geared to stop it.
Thanks for reading. I’ll post practice notes 9-ish.

Delbert, you sound like a pack rat like me. If I had only saved all my old Masters Tournament badges which date back to 1956, I would be a wealthy man today. It’s amazing what people will pay for those old badges. BTW, I was there for that Regional at the OMNI too.

i went to the unc gt 90 game. talk about a boring game. ended in a tie. we win that and we win the nc outright. of course we should have anyway since colorado got 5 downs against missou. can’t believe people voted for them knowing that happened. that would never happen today.

Alan, back in those days, we NEVER won in Chapel Hill. It was like some kind of jinx against us. I remember going there once when Curry was coaching, and we were in the red zone like 10 times and got only 3 points out of it. Obviously we lost the game. I HATE that place. LOL

Best wishes for you, 14 GT. I donated a kidney to science in June (the Big C), but everything looks good. Super, you’re 2 years older than me. I also owe a few dimes, since that thing cost quite a bit out of pocket. So much for redoing the yard with Zoysia sod

Supersize—see your comment about 1990. We were the only unbeaten team in the country that year-1 tie with UNC only blemish-13 to 13?–ND/Colorado bowl game when ND was robbed of a game winning TD on a clip that had no effect on the play because it was so far behind & the blockee? turned his back–Rocket Ishmael? & sports writers Colorado a share of the NC making it a split with us

I fortunately live on a mostly-wooded lot, so I don’t have yard care to worry about. But because of all the trees, I have plenty of squirrel damage to my cedar sided house. And I was checking today, and I have some moisture damage in a lot of places too that has accumulated over the past few years. I put a call in to a house repair man today to come give me an estimate on repair work. I guess I’ll be owing a few more dimes pretty soon.

1 4 GT, I watched that HORRIBLE clipping call from my hotel in Orlando after the Tech game. It was a SHAMEFUL call and it totally robbed Tech of the undisputed title. Of course, it shouldn’t have been disputed to begin with, since the refs had also GIVEN Colorado the win over Missouri.

Delbert, me too. It sickens me to think about the TERRIBLE games we have played AT UVA since 1990, and it scares me to think about what MIGHT happen up there this year. I think having Groh on our side now will be a big plus though

Supersize. I mostly just go to the store now and use a walker to get around and an electric buggy in the store. I expect to be fully ambulatory after the next hip job. The repair on the right hip worked great. Woke up with no pain in that side and have good mobility there. Folks have been very kind and thoughtful. I have actually had some young fellas come up and ask me to let them put the groceries in my truck–10-12 yrs old. Thanks to all for the good thoughts. I will soon be like a restored antique car and be running another 30 or more years.

We just had the last pine tree removed from the yard a week ago. Very big, too close to the front of the house. The job was amazing. The big truck with the hydraulic extension lifted it, cut off at the ground with a chain saw, swung it about 120 degrees out to the street, and they fed the whole thing into a shredder. They had this handy-dandy “tank” that had an attachment for a grappling thingy that pulled the tree at an angle so it could be eaten by the shredder, and a smaller remote-controlled tank with stump grinder and dozer/front end loader attachments.

OK, guys, I need to step away from this computer for awhile. I’ll probably be back around 10PM, and I will scroll through the posts to see if anything really interesting has been said. Until then, or whenever, have fun, guys, and GO JACKETS !!!!

Heck, I say that now. The only complaint I have is I was’t ready to retire, at bleast in my heart & brain, but my body said otherwise. I enjoyed my job too much and it was very rewarding in all ways.

To All. Like I said earlier last week? I have thoroughly enjoyed the time spent on here exchanging thoughts with like minded souls. I am looking forward to next year with more vim & vigor and this has brightened my days considerably. Maybe I can meet some of fellows at some of the games next year. Best wishes to all, even the mutts that come on here stirring kaka.

football team is as good or better than expected. Comment about the article on missing “T’s” on campus. Reference the 1960’s incident was about the “Whistle’s” disappearance for a period of time not missing “T’s”.

I think I’m gonna drop out of watching Tech football for the rest of the season. Any Tech team that would change the color of their jersey numbers I don’t want to give the time of day to. What they decided to do is dorky for Tech. I cannot accept colors of numbers on jerseys changing as leaves do in the Fall. I also don’t agree with the hiring of a basketball coach other than Mark price, so I don’t think I’ll watch Tech basketball under Brian Gregory. Tech is not the same as when I was going there. I think they make lousy sports decisions, such as the decision to create “Buzz” w/o asking the opinions of all alumni about this. I still will retain an education from there though.
