Paul Johnson on uniqueness of 2011 offense

Greetings-

A few points from Paul Johnson’s news conference.

1. Johnson said he was thinking this morning about the nature of this year’s offense, and how it’s “kind of unique” because there isn’t a player that needs to have the ball like Jonathan Dwyer or Anthony Allen. The team is more athletic across the board, but Johnson doesn’t feel the need to scheme the offense to get one particular player a lot of touches.

“If they want to take away David Sims, then, O.K., we’ll give it to Orwin Smith,” he said. “If they want to take away Orwin, we’ll do whatever. It isn’t so much tweaking it to get the ball to certain individuals as it is kind of running the system.”

2. Johnson noted that Tony Zenon didn’t get many snaps Saturday against North Carolina, calling it an oversight.

“We need to get him in some,” he said.

3. In response to a question about the Russell Wilson situation over the summer that led him to transfer from N.C. State to Wisconsin, Johnson said he has had players who  played for the baseball team (Roddy Jones played for the Tech baseball team in 2010) but never one who wanted to play minor league baseball over the summer. He said he didn’t know what he’d do if the situation arose.

“I’m not touching that one,” he said.

4. Johnson stressed that the team hasn’t accomplished anything yet, a message players I’m guessing players have heard.

“All they have to do is look and see we’ve played a third of the season,” he said. “You’d better have laser vision, tunnel vision, one game at a time. That’s the way you’ve got to play the game.”

5. Johnson said guard Omoregie Uzzi is moving better and is lighter than a year ago, but is also simply stronger, more mature and more knowledgeable in the offense.

6. Jeff Greene, who sat out Saturday’s game with an injury, practiced Monday and will play Saturday. The kickoff specialist spot between Chandler Anderson and Justin Moore will be determined again in practice this week. Johnson wasn’t happy with the kicking game in general, as well as the kickoff return team.

7. Johnson said quarterback Tevin Washington has played well and done a good job of distributing the ball. Johnson said that quarterbacks “very seldom” audible. They occasionally will change the direction of a play and sometimes have an “either-or” call. Said Johnson, “He’s dine a nice job on that.”

Johnson also pointed out that the offense hasn’t run the triple-option play much because defenses are geared to stop it.

Thanks for reading. I’ll post practice notes 9-ish.

Super – Some other places I’ve lived were in the more temperate zones: coastal South Carolina for 2 years, SF Bay area and Napa County for 2 years, Hawaii for a year, and of course 3 stints in Aiken.

Delbert D. @ 3:54 – “I stilled “. No, I didn’t do the hard stuff, although some of my relatives in the North Georgia mountains probably did. I was once offered a milk jug of local shine for 50 cents by an old patron at the Dixie Cafe in Dahlonega several decades ago, but I passed on that. I have legally homebrewed beer, but my son picked up that responsibility a few years ago.

The problem with too much time between games is that the offense loses their rhythm. This offense thrives on continuity and too much time off destroys that.

Add another one to the Tech excuse playbook.

headley, why is that an excuse? You already provided an “excuse” by saying that defenses with time to prepare can stop us. I’m saying that’s not the case; it’s the loss of rhythm by the Tech offense.

Add another to your book of stupid comments.

IMHO, what has really hurt Tech season ticket sales is that required contribution in order to buy seats. Lots of people disappeared in my section and the one next to it the year he instituted that policy. What they need to realize is that every other school in the country has a similar policy and has had it for years. I don’t like it, but it hasn’t stopped me from buying season tickets.

Jack G – When I was young, we had a coal stove in the living room. I used to get irritated with my father for pouring a bucket of coal in the thing just when “Superman” was coming on the TV. We later got an oil heater with the 50-gallon drum out back and finally gas heat in the old house.

Delbert D.

Super – Yes; I asked him about some discounts for the Gray areas on the seating chart that never seem to be occupied for older citizens, and perhaps issuing passes that could be exchanged for unclaimed seats at halftime. I’d be willing to wait for that. Not like the old days, when I could get in Georgia games for $1 high school admission (I grew up near Athens). My next door neighbor in high school years was a Tech grad, and I would get to attend a game every year with him.

Delbert, I know the mutt trolls thrive on making fun of this, but I wish he would re-institute the “family package” deal. One of my nieces here in Augusta took advantage of that several times in the past; with a family of 4, adding in the expense of driving up from Augusta, it’s just impossible for her, her husband, and their two kids to attend games. They are BIG Tech fans, but that just doesn’t fit into their budget. They did decide to bite the bullet for the UGA game this year though. I ordered them tickets on Sunday—-$324.00 total. I guess I won’t be getting a Christmas present from them this year. LOL

Delbert D.

Paddy – CPJ’s idea of a “trick play” is when he told Embry Peeples on the sideline last season, “Remember that play we ran the last time you were in when you went to block the safety in the middle? Run to the same place, and we’ll throw the ball to you.”

Delbert, that really is a good deal, but again for a young family of 4 (like my niece’s), that would mean 400 dollars. They were willing to spend almost that much for the UGA game, but that’s sort of different. I am thrilled that their kids (age 16 and 13) are going to get to see that one. I never saw ANY Tech game in person till I was a freshman at Tech.

Delbert D. I read your post about ’shine & Dahlonega. Are you from that part of Georgia? My Dad grew up in that area & we would go to “dinner on the grounds” at Liberty Church & he would show us boys our ancestors grave sites & tell us what he knew about them.
