Georgia Tech heads into N.C. State week

Greetings-

Hope you were able to watch the game Saturday. If not, you can catch the replay here on ESPN 3.

Anyway, I imagine you’ve re-hashed the game a good bit, so we’ll try to look forward here.

1. With North Carolina out of the way, it’s not difficult to imagine that the Yellow Jackets could be 7-0 in a month’s time. (Unless your imagination is not very good.) Obviously, if coaches and players start thinking along those lines, that’s probably not wise. But, as fans, I’d say you’re welcome to do so. Unless something drastic happens, Tech should be favored in each of the next three games against N.C. State, Maryland and Virginia.

If Tech can continue its improvement, execution and focus, I’d rate its chances of winning each fairly high. Certainly, weird things happen and counting on a group of 20-year-olds to stay consistent at most anything can be a foolish proposition. But, somebody’s got to win those games.

If you’re wondering, and I know you aren’t, my laborious research tells me that if Tech reaches 7-0, it can reasonably expect to be ranked somewhere between 10th and 20th in the country. I checked all the top-25 polls going into Week 8 through 2002 for the lowest-ranked undefeated BCS-conference team. The high was No. 8 and the low was No. 19. Most were No. 14-16. I suppose I could also look at the teams ahead of Tech and figure out how many head-to-head matchups there are that would drop the loser beneath the Jackets or see what teams have a tough schedule in the next four weeks, but there are limits to my laborious research.

While we’re on the topic of projections, you could make the case that in this 7-0 scenario, Tech might be a little high, as they would be 7-0 with (possibly) only one win over a “quality opponent.”

2. A troublesome number for the N.C. State. The offense is averaging 2.8 yards per carry. The N.C. State school paper pointed out that, if you take away wins over Liberty and South Alabama, the average is 1.5 yards per carry. Aiyee.

Wake Forest and Cincinnati’s passing numbers against N.C. State: 48-for-70, 600 yards, four touchdowns, two interceptions.

One other factoid: The Wolfpack’s linebackers coach is … Jon Tenuta.

3. Hopefully you read the story I wrote for Monday’s paper about statistical differences between the 2010 team and the 2011 version after four games. As you might imagine, the most obvious difference is the passing game. Other facets of the offense, as well as the defense, are improved (penalties are down 38 percent, for example), but the efficiency of the passing game is what has improved the most.

I think one way to capture is that, last year, Tech had completed 33 percent of its passes through four games, on its way to finishing at 38 percent, lowest in FBS. This year, Tevin Washington’s completion rate is 64 percent. With one more completion, he’d be slightly ahead of the single-season school record for completion percentage (Joe Hamilton, 1999, 66.6 percent).

It’s easy to make this a Joshua Nesbitt vs. Washington matter and, obviously, some or maybe even a lot of the difference lies there. Protection, route running, catching efficiency (if such a thing exists) and the situations (throwing off of play action vs. throwing because the team is behind) all play a role.

I’d be curious for your thoughts.

4. Game time for the Maryland game at Bobby Dodd Stadium Oct. 8 should be announced Monday. I’ll have it up on a blog as soon as I find out.

5. Some links from Saturday’s game.

Charlotte Observer report from the UNC side, as well as Wilmington Star News.

Jon Cooper’s story about Stephen Hill’s efforts for Sting Daily.

Matt Winkeljohn’s game story and various pontifications for Sting Daily.

David Friedlander’s report for the Gwinnett Daily Post.

Stan Awtrey’s story in the Macon Telegraph.

6. I’ll have post-practice notes up 9-ish. My guesses for Tech players of the game: Jeremiah Attaochu, Darren Waller (special teams) and either Stephen Hill or Jay Finch.

Thanks for reading. Please follow on Facebook and Twitter.

They are mad over there.

Y’all think O’Brien regrets giving the keys to the car to Glennon and buying wilson a cab ride to Madison?

Washington and Nesbitt are two different QB’s. I would not say one is better than the other. It’s the other factors…defenses not respecting the pass, the blocking that is opening up the running(especially by the recievers) that in time opens up the passing, and the work that the recievers have put in to run better routes and actually catch the ball.

Like I have said before, the offense will take care of itself. The defense needs to keep improving each week and not get comfortable.

Defense wins games, if they don’t score, they can’t win.

What are the stats on KO returns and especially punt returns? At least we are catching the punts.

October is key for GT (Just like in 009)

@ NCST
Maryland
@ UVA
@ Miami
Clemson

With no off week.
Yes Miami appears to have major problems stopping the run, but that is going to be a very difficult game for the Jackets …. 2nd consecutive road game, and they really don’t play real well in South Florida. Playing against Miami’s athletes will help prepare the defense for Clemson’s the following week.

If GT can come out of October 3-2 it’ll be 9+ Ws. 4-1, and the VT game decides the Coastal. 5-0 … GT wins the Coastal, and UGA will stand between an 11-1 or 12-0 season.

Stay grounded Jackets, execute, and take NO opponent lightly, and good things will happen!

Don’t like your thinking at all Ken.

No game is a gimmie’ when our defense has shown repeatedly, that between making some pretty good plays– for no ryme or reason it falls asleep and gives up quick scores.

Also, special teams that miss 30 yard field goals and fumble kick-offs could make us lose to Gwinnett High School.

ONE GAME AT A TIME.

I am excited to be traveling to Raleigh this weekend though. Hope I get to see a beat-down in revenge for last year’s Buzz-Kill (pardon the pun) NC St. issued at Dodd.

It’s only 4-0. Am I celebrating a great September? Absolutely. Is it a promising start to the season? Sure. Does it warrant these headlines about 1990 and what this team might have in them? Not in my opinion. There are no real pushovers left on the schedule. NCSU, UVA, Maryland, Miami, and even Duke are the type of team that can get back on track, and each should be considered a trap game. I’m praying the coaching staff is harping on the mistakes and work is being put in this week by our team in every phase of the game (I’m lookin’ at you, ST’s). NCSU’s defense was pretty decent against us last season as that game was NOT a shootout. Wilson was scoring plenty, sure, but more importantly, we were not. I’m confident in GT’s ability to go 7-0 and beyond, but I am not okay talking like that’s a sure thing.

What I do plan on doing, instead of bragging about 4-0 and hanging my hopes on a season of greatness, is place myself on GT’s campus at least 4 hours before game time every home game. I will then proceed to mingle with my friends and family whilst consuming varying amounts of caffeine, alcohol, and meat. I will then place myself in my seats within the stadium a solid HOUR before kickoff and prepare myself to expend every last tailgating calorie screaming, clapping and otherwise raising Cain for my Jackets the entire game. I know my section found me obnoxious at the outset of this last game, but by the 3rd and 4th quarter they had all pitched in and were very much contributing to the uncharacteristically high stadium noise this game. I know UNC’s O-line heard it, and hopefully every other team coming to BDS will hear the same. THAT’s a fan’s duty if we’re hoping for a continued win streak of any kind. It’s make-your-own-momentum when fans get in the game like that, and it usually pays off.

UNC is not a top ten team, granted, but read up on their talent in the trenches. Their D-line has at least 2 guys who will be playing on Sundays next year, but their O-line was also gigantic. I’m sure your team has large, talented linemen, too, Playsomebody (whoever you root for), but watch the replay of the game or even just some highlights. Watch as Tech’s “undersized” lines handle business against these “SEC-like” lines of UNC. Who won, Playsomebody? Even with ~17 points left on the field due to a fumble, INT and missed FG…who won the game? I’m pretty sure UNC will be ranked again this season. That’s a good football team. a handfull of questions concerning this team in the spring but now I see 3 things, that if cleared up, will make the difference in winning the next for and competing with Clemson and VT.

1- we need a kicker. period. end of story.

2- 3rd down defense is killing Tech. Saturday they had 3 and 15 & 3 and 17. Then blew it. Fix this and we will beat teams by a wider margin by getting the ball back and scoring quickly. Defense wears themselves out by continuing to crap their pant on 3rd downs.

3-punt returner. Laskey ain’t getting it done. We need a fast, quick guy like Zenon. Not sure why Paul doesn’t use him or Wright. He used Hill saturday and look what happened.

With saying this, it looks like these 3 things could be cleaned up rather quickly. Not too shabby for all the question marks at the beginning of the season.

Oh, and a shout out to the O line. Those guys did a great job against those mammoths for NC.

Carson was a coulda been. Fulcher had flashes. Pepper was some home cooking that came close. Curry was headed up when he betrayed us. Lewis was a total F/Up. Ross did great & can’t fault him for trying the NFL. O’Leary did pretty good with “the Fridge” as his O/C. Gailey was average. Johnson is the real deal & has done real well wherever he coached. Most of you guys probably don’t even remember Fulcher, but he COULD have been the ideal coach for Tech. He had the links both to Tech (former player and former GREAT freshmen coach) and to the state of Georgia (Augusta boy). I don’t know what happened to him to cause him to quit, but in my opinion it was a big loss for Tech when he did. The rumors in Augusta were that his marital problems screwed up his life. I don’t remember the story of his divorce, but his second wife was a TOTAL FLAKE.

telling an all american qg to take a hike is buffoonery. i would say that is a coach that is trying to establish a ‘we’ mentality vs a ‘me’ mentality.

i am also a buckeye fan and i wish we would never had recruited me first prior.

instead of a leader at qb we got a ‘ringleader’.

look at what that got us.

One thing hurting the defense if the offense has been scoring so fast on long plays.
The longer the drive lasts the longer the defense is off the field. Time of possesion
helps the defense as much as anything. Can’t tell the offense to stop scoring so
fast, but keeping the defense off the field is the key.

to compare apples to apples when talking about what josh would do in this offense.

he would do the exact same thing that days is doing now. they are almost clones of one another.

josh while being a great talent was not much for being a great distributor. on the other hand tevin has shown that he is a great ‘point guard’ type of qb. rather than look to take over a game and do to much like josh would do…. tevin looks to get everybody involved and picks his shots.

there is no comparison between the reads that josh made vs tevin. tevin is a big upgrade in that area as well as in his pass accuracy.

Tech can only control what it, as a team, does in the remaining games on the schedule. If they take of business and win out then what will be, will be. It hasn’t helped national perception that Maryland and Miami has struggled but it is what it is. It will tough for Tech to finish undefeated but we will see what transpires. If this team winds up with 10-12 wins then it will be a great season and set the stage for the next few years. A lot of folks either don’t know of have forgotten just how young this team as a whole and given its youth the 2012 and 2013 seasons are looking very good. Give Tech 2-3 years of 10 plus wins then the national pollstes/media won’t be able to overlook Tech.

I am very excited about this season and possibilities but I am equally excited about the future of the program!

I watched a LOT of games on Saturday, at least most of 5 different games after the GT game was over. Look, there are only 2 or 3 teams out there that are playing inspired football (actually, maybe only 2); in the so called big games that I watched, including ugag, there was a lot of crappy play. I’m being honest when I say that I didn’t really see a single team play, other than LSU, that didn’t look like a high school team several times during the games. The only thing that’s really killing us is the total lack of a kicking game. Can’t CPJ just go yank some kid off the soccer team that can at least kick the ball to the end zone, or make a 30 yrd FG?

You obviously didn’t watch the game. The score didn’t reflect how lopsided time of posession, total rushing and passing yards were.

If the players can continue the pace w/o getting upset by their first test scores the profs gave them, and w/o getting upset by anything else others connected with Tech are establisng for themselves, then they could go 7-0. They cannot protest about others by not playing well, like they might have done with Nezbitt’s play after Demariyus Thomas left. Nezbitt passed well enough to Thomas that an NFL job was offered to him thanks to Nez. People use Tech to create future careers in many fields, including grad school, and the players have to realize that everybody at Tech is for themselves and their own education, not each other as some sort of interdependent team all that much.

about O’Brien chasing off Russell Wilson, it wouldn’t surprise me if CPJ would do something similar, although i don’t know if he’d draw the line where O’Brien did (Wilson’s minor-league baseball got in the way of participating in offseason workouts).
Remember, CPJ cut loose a high schooler who, after committing, took a visit elsewhere (which he tells commits they can’t do). obviously, stakes are different, but he was at that point risking becoming “the guy who didn’t let the eventual All-American take another visit after committing.” He’s a “you’re either with us or you’re not” kind of guy.

re Sims up the middle. In the first half, to me Johnson did not seem to attempt as many “middles” as usual and UNC seemingly did sort-of shut it down. Start the second half and boom…Sims successfully up the middle a few times. Sounds like great coaching to me. One of the best Sims runs was not up the middle but a pitch to the left…for a TD.

Hope Clemson beats VPI Sat and Tech plays Clemson in the Charlotte champ game.

Kerryb,
Not making a prediction on Clemson, as I like the players and coaches will focus on NC State, but Clemson just like GT still has some things to prove. They look great but have they really been tested? Auburn never deserved the ranking they had and thier D is awful and FSU was playing with a depleted team. Not taking anything away from Clemson I am just not completely sold yet and no real test is left in thier division.

@BuzzBeater … OH MY GOD THAT IS FUNNY!!!!! Typical delusion-oid who hears a rumor and believes it to be the gospel. Those rings were awarded to GT players and coaches to commemorate a great SEASON, not just one game. It was the GT players, when asked, who decided to inscribe the rings with the 45-42 score … that victory was the culmination of a good season for GT … it was not the sole reason the rings were made.

Question for the group: Doesn’t ESPN/USA Today own or run the Coaches Poll? UNC was ranked 25th in that one and we were 24th. I am surprised that ESPN was not touting this game as 24 vs 25. I mean it is their poll and they were the ones broadcasting it. Just wondering if anyone knows why the powers that be wouldn’t try to capitalize on that. I mean, isn’t the reason the BCS was created in the first place was because they would NOT get rid of the Coaches Poll?

This is why bigger conferences are not always better. If the SEC ends up at 14 with Mizzo, that will be just another ‘Kentucky’ for the league….

The ACC needs to use expansion to re-align the divisions. GT needs to be playing FSU every year, period!! Hope the ACC goes to 16, gets Rutgers and Uconn and four pod scenario plays out with GT, FSU, Miami and Clemson in the ‘South’ pod.
NC Schools, UNC, NCST, Duke, Wake in the Tobacco pod,
VT, UVA, Maryland and Pitt in the Mid-Atlantic pod.
Syracuse, Uconn (Penn State if your dream’n), Rutgers (or Notre Dame if your dream’n) and BC in the New York pod.

Can you imagine the HUGE DOUGH the ACC could garner with Notre Dame and Penn State!!!!! In both FOOTBALL and BASKETBALL!!!!!

NYC is the mother load of people who still are not into college football. Why? Because none of the teams in the north east play each other anymore, COMPELLING match-ups!! This is why the SEC is so successful!!!

THIS is why the SEC should get its ‘ego’s’ out of the way and invite FSU, Clemson and GT!!! How interesting would the last weekend of the regular season be if these were all conference games!!!! And for those who say the new 20 Million dollar exit fee each ACC school would have to pay? That is chump change when looking long term. FSU, Clemson, and GT in the SEC would kill the ACC but since both the SEC and the ACC are paid by ESPN, won’t happen…..but FSU, Clemson and GT are a hell of alot more COMPELLING than WV, Mizzo, USF, Houston or Louisville…..or anybody else.

I can’t believe the Big 12 is going to survive, they have a band-aid on a bullet hole……

Tech should go undefeated this year. All their players are getting looks/pt. All the rbs are having passes thrown to them, not just runs. The D is doing well. The special teams blocked the punt, and they are catching punts now. Georgia had those ugliest in the nation unis for the first game. Those unis were the ugliest unis I have ever seen of any team, and I’m going on 60 years old. The best teams have complex offense plays and lineups of players, as the Auburn-Oregon national championship game displayed. It is like a game of chess for the head coaches, except leave the King pawn out for Tech, perhaps the QB, he’s for the redcoats of Georgia to enjoy manipulating so much.

If Tech loses to VT and Clem, they’ll be without a single “quality” victory (given the ACC’s second-rate football) coming into the UGA game. The schedule is dreadful with only a couple of heavyweights.

As I have stated on several posts before, the key to our success this year is our defense and special teams. Starting with kicking team, if Tech can’t find a kicker that than put the ball in the end zone instead of the 10 or 15 yard line, you are putting the defense in hole to start with. The defense is going to have to start every game at 100%. Letting NC drive the field on opening ko doesn’t cut it. Also, believe the D gave up 3 more long drives. No pressure on QB and playing that cushion coverage, a good passing team will eat our lunch. I don’t believe any team we play will stop this offense with the passing and running mix presently being used. The only thing that will stop it is ourselves. Sloppy blocking and turning ball over. Hope this doesn’t happen. Play each game 1 at a time and don’t look forward to the next opponent.

Ok I just now got around to looking at this article and I don’t feel like going through everyone’s comments, so if anyone already figured this out then my bad. Ken mentioned that he didn’t have time to figure up how many head-to-head matchups of teams ahead of us there were. I just figured it up, and there are 8 of these type of matchups over the next 3 weeks. So barring no upsets there will be 13 undefeated teams ahead of us. The good news is that this is college football, so there will be upsets. I say if we go 7-0 we crack the top 10 rather easily. Just thought I’d let anyone know who was curious about that.

On a different note, I don’t see a game on our schedule that we don’t have the ability to win right now. Hopefully we’ll only get better as the season goes along, so the ACC Championship is well within reach. It’s surprising that the Coastal is already a 2-team (Ok, Miami is debatable, but they lost to Maryland and Kansas State; they’d really have to turn it around) race after 4 weeks of mainly out of conference games. The VT game should yet again decide who makes the trip to Charlotte this year!

I wish you had never written this article. This is all GT needs — talk about being 7-0 as if it can be easily achieved.I expect GT will have their hands full this Saturday for a number of reasons — foremost being an overconfident mindset going into the game based on articles and talk like this. Other factors: NCSU will be fired up after their embarassing play against Cincinnati; NCSU played Thursday and has extra time to prepare for the Spread Option; GT generally doesn’t play very well in Raleigh no matter what the matchup is predicted to be; this will be GT’s first road ACC game of the year. GT has been impressive but there’s real danger in assuming the outcome of the next 3 games – and articles like this don’t help.

In response to an earlier post about QB comparisons…I loved Josh Nesbitt as much as the next Tech fan, but lets be honest, he couldn’t hit the broadside of the management building standing 10 feet away! His throwing mechanics were horrible while Tevin Washington has shown good mechanics and good touch on his passes. Throwing when you want to and not when you NEED to also makes a difference but good mechanics are the key.

I think we win the next three games but the Clemson game will be a battle. They have the strength, size and speed to slow down the option offense so it will all come down to execution. Oh, and their new QB Boyd is looking scary good.

Well, the announcers at the UNC game were right when a team like Tech goes 6-7, everyone jumps them quicker than a team with a more vogue offense. It’s almost hilarious seeing how everyone flip-flopped on TW hating. Anyways just thought I’d share that…

When TW first came into the game against Virginia Tech, I could tell almost immediately that he was a more natural passer than Nesbitt. While he was a little raw, he had a much better delivery. One the other hand, I think Nesbitt was a better runner than Washington. My 2 cents.
