Guard Omoregie Uzzi, outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu and safety Isaiah Johnson were named ACC players of the week at their respective position groups on Monday, following Georgia Tech’s 35-28 win over North Carolina.
It’s Uzzi’s second such award in as many weeks. Uzzi (lineman of the week) helped Tech produce almost 500 yards of total offense and run for 312 against a Tar Heels defense that had been allowing 77 rushing yards per game. Coaches credited Uzzi with almost 20 knockdown blocks in the game.
Attaochu (linebacker of the week) had a team-high nine tackles, three sacks, a forced fumble and a tipped pass that led to an interception. (Side note: I spoke with Jeremiah’s father Paul Saturday evening. He didn’t get to watch the game because he was driving people home from a church service – he’s a pastor – and just caught the last few minutes. Mr. Attaochu, who grew up in Nigeria and is still learning the game, said he prefers reading about the games as opposed to watching them because the game has so much hitting. My kind of fan.)
Johnson (defensive back of the week) got his second interception of the season (the one tipped by Attaochu) and had seven tackles, second most on the team.

Each week a new hurdle.
Keep clearing them and we’ll have a new ACC championship trophy to add to 2009’s.
I expect our trophy back unless the NCAA wants to give the Canes the death penalty.
The investigator sent to Tech was an ex Tarheel football player I thought I read.

Congrats to the guys. Now work on the errors and build off the positives and get more Ws. And would somebody please get the kicker in the weight room.
Stephen might have got it if not for that dropped pass, but it still might have been hard as Watkins played really well. Hill did get the highlight on ESPN for those that care though.

Klimpsun for homecoming is shaping up to be a great game, can’t wait! The defense is really coming together. Other teams are getting their yards in chunks, a few blown assignments which is better than getting yards consistently. Complain all you want, but I just attribute it to youth. I love seeing Isaiah Johnson tear heads off

I don’t like the hire.
Personally, I think we hired him because he’s cheap.
But as the saying goes, “You get what you pay for.”
Unlikely we will ever be able to consistently get the hosses on the OL to run the 3-4 the way it was designed.

juvenal, I guess you could complain about the “force” that is Mount Barnes. The kid is ridiculously slow, gets up too high on his attack, and typically gets man-handled by a single blocker. Walls isn’t great by any means, but he is a smart player, has good fundamentals, works incredibly hard, and produces on the field. I personally think he has done a great job adjusting to a position he wasn’t recruited for. I hope you aren’t expecting All-American numbers from a NT because you will be sorely disappointed.

Ken, I don’t believe that the ACC names players of the week for all eleven positions. But your article said that these three players were named players of the week for their respective postion groups. It would be good for you to tell us how these groups are broken down. I would guess it would be offensive lineman for Uzzi, defensive lineman for Attaochou, and defensive back for Johnson.

One would think that defensive players would love to play for Tech as they can get opportunities right away if they can play. I’ll admit to being ‘old school’ and would like to see a few more 300 pounders for the D-Line that can occupy at least two blockers. Maybe we feed them and coach them up once they get here.

Oh, will the complaining about the defense please stop for crying out loud. Many of these guys are still pretty young, and honestly, I’ve seen improvement every week. Two interceptions and a nasty seven sacks is NOTHING to scoff at. Tell me, when was the last time you ever heard of the Jackets forcing seven sacks. Attaochu has a huge future in this defense, he has that prototypical mold for a nasty 34 outside linebacker. By the end of the season, these guys could be looking better than ever.

Somebody tell Rod Sweeting we want to see that hit every time (he was flagged for personal foul). We haven’t had a punishing hitter at corner since…. (can’t remember)
All the announcers on TV (NFL and NCAA) are puking out the politically correct statements when refs make these calls. First announcer to side with the defense gets my vote.
Why don’t they penalize (fine in the NFL) the QUARTERBACK ? He’s the one who put the receiver in a defenseless position. …..

Al Groh should be commended for a vastly improved defense this year. Our secondary looks good so far, especially in run support. We are a little soft in the middle of the front seven but much better than last year. Just keep improving every week and let’s see where we end up.
Groh is also more aggressive in his calls this year. Interesting that this week we go up against John Tenuta @ NCSU.

crackbaby…I saw them play Wake and Cincy. They were getting killed by Wake (made it a real game) and got clobbered by Cincy. They have a really fast WR that can take it to the house at any time! I don’t think they have a real good rushing offense though. The numbers are really low. Tech should win this game handily and give up 2 tds or less on defense! Our offense should score 50+. That’s how it should go anyway

I doubt if the NT in the 3-4 is ever going to get much publicity. His primary responsibility, according to Joe Collier, the architect of Denver’s “Orange Crush defense is to “control the “A” gaps, the two openings between the center and guards, and not get pushed back into his linebackers. If a running play comes through one of those gaps, he must make the tackle or control what is called the “jump-through”—the guard or center who is trying to get out to the linebackers.”

The skill and physicality of the linebackers is the key to the 3-4, along with that stuffer of a nose tackle. One reason that 16 NFL teams is that 3-4 DEs are easier to find than 4-3 DEs, and the OLBs take the role of pass rushers, typically with more speed and agility than a 4-3 DE.

Wild Bill – Georgia Tech had Mohamed Yahiaoui as the kickoff guy a few years back. He didn’t get that many touchbacks, but more than Scott Blair did last year. Also, remember that Scott Blair had to make 8 tackles on kickoffs in 2009. A tough rugby guy might be better.

To solve our NT woes, maybe we recruit a couple of sumo wrestlers from Japan with 4 years of eligibility. Put a 500 lb guy in the center of the line who’s trained not to fall down and let him drive the opponents center 5 yards into the backfield. Feed them buckets of fries, O rings and chili dogs from the V and they should be able to keep their weight up.

Observations about the defense:
The nickel package is much more effective than the straight 3-4. UNC recognized they could throw on our 3-4 package. We could not stop them until we switched from Drummond to Jamea Thomas. We got better pressure from various blitz packages and did not lose much in Thomas’ run stopping. Drummond has to get better in pass coverage, or we will continue to get burned over the middle.
