Georgia Tech notes: Stephen Hill catch

1. Quarterback Tevin Washington had a season high for rushing attempts, 25, which netted 74 yards, including two touchdowns. In fact, Washington had only had 22 carries through the first three games. He ran a lot of keepers on option plays because North Carolina was defending the B-back dive and the A-back pitch.
“Basically, it was just me and the ‘mike’ linebacker. It was me one on one with him. I was going to make him miss or he was going to make a play,” he said.

2. Stephen Hill on his leaping, one-handed catch on the sideline in the first quarter:
“Tevin put it in a spot that I can go get it only. I just used basketball skills from high school to go up and get the ball. It kind of surprised me. I’m not going to lie to you. It kind of surprised me. Once the ball got to my hands, (I) just used my strength in my forearm.”

3. Washington threw his first interception of the season, but had another efficient passing day – 10-for-14 for 184 yards with a touchdown, a 59-yarder on a well-executed play-action pass that reeled in cornerback Charles Brown. It was a season high for pass attempts.
Said Washington, “Until they start respecting the pass game, we’ll keep hitting big pass plays until they do. Down the road, we’re just going to do whatever it takes to win, whether it’s running the ball or if it’s passing the ball.”

4. Hill on playing a close game:
“We learned a lot coming from this game. I’m glad it kind of it happened like this in a way because it shows that games aren’t going to be easy because we’ve been blowing out the first three teams, what, 40 points and over. I’m glad that it kind of happened this way because it showed that we fought. Our back was against the wall and we were punching back.”

5. Tech safety Isaiah Johnson said he lost the ball he intercepted in the sun after it was tipped by outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu. It’s his second of the year.
Johnson said that “I was just praying to God that it was going to hit me and I was going to catch it. Luckily it did. I just fell back. I couldn’t see the ball at all. It shocked me.”

6. Attaochu on tackling UNC running back Giovani Bernard:
“We don’t care how difficult somebody is to bring down. You just have to make the tackle. We play defense and we’re supposed to make tackles. So that’s another thing we’ve got to fix.”

7. Center Jay Finch had a shiner below his right eye, which he said he received when he took an illegal head slap from a North Carolina lineman. Finch called the head slap “probably one of [North Carolina's] favorite pass-rush moves.”
Said Finch, “I guess that’s why they call it the trenches, because it’s a fight every play, regardless of what I’m doing, pass or run block.”

8. After gaining 15 yards on five carries in the first half, B-back David Sims ran 10 times for 56 yards in the second half. Finch said the line made “some small tweaks” at halftime to free up Sims.
A-back Orwin Smith led Tech with 79 rushing yards on seven carries.

Tech needs someone to handle kick offs. Years ago a Big Ten team held open tryouts for students to handle kick offs. Don’t remember which team it was. They got their man and he kick for two years at a much higher rate of yards allowed. Something to think about. That part of their game is going to cost them a win before this season is over.

Supersize that order: Good luck getting your 4 tickets to the GA game!
Do hope there are more Ga Tech fans than Ga fans at that game.
Sit on the 50 yard line at Grant Field and Tech fans had to have given tickets to the UNC fans.
There were UNC fans all around. Now, how do opponent’s fans get these tickets??? On the 50 yard line no less!!!!

If do right, no can defense

The problem with the defense isn’t that they can’t make plays… it’s that they’re inconsistent.
The problem with the kicking game is also that – inconsistency. We’ve had a few kickoffs land in the endzone over the past 4 games (don’t know if it was C. Anderson or J. Moore kicking off), we just need to be consistent.

If we fix the inconsistency, a whole lot of our troubles will be gone.

There were only a few UNC fans anywhere near me on the upper east 40 yard line. I’m sure they got them from scalpers, Tech fans not going to the game, or from the unsold batch sitting in the Tech ticket office.

M, I already placed my order for those extra tickets. I received an email over the weekend saying that they had released more for season-ticket holders only. I received confirmation of my purchase within a couple of minutes of placing the order.

Season ticket sales nosedived the year that DRad started charging for ticket purchasing privileges. I don’t necessarily like the policy, but since every other school in the country has a similar policy, why shouldn’t Tech too.

Re Phil Smith – I did notice he got taken out in the middle of a series, but wasn’t sure why. thanks for the observation. he did come back in, though.
sorry you’re having trouble, supersize. i’m going to ask our blog guy monday to look at the posts caught in the filter and see what he says.
Regarding kicker Justin Moore – he’s a third of the way through his first season as a full-timer. i’m sure he’d be the first to say he could be doing better, but it’s a third of the way through his first season. maybe he deserves a little more time.

Game with the Tarheels wasn’t as close as the score. The Jackets should’ve won by at least 14, but that’s football.
Offense still humming along and the Washington’s passing accuracy will make it a nightmare for DC’s to prepare for GT.
Defense still up and down. Made some big plays and gave up some big plays. The potential is there.
As for special teams…..ugh ! Hard to believe with all the soccer going on around Atlanta, that Tech hasn’t found a kickoff man than can get it at least inside the 10. I’m 46 and with a little stretching I know I can get it deeper than that. Unfortunately, I have used up my eligibility.
Pull hard for the Tigers this week. Clemson needs to put a loss on VT to help in the coastal. We’ll worry about the Tigers when the time comes. Plenty of Wofford option offense to study on tape before that date.

#61 P. Smith was pulled because he was STUPID. He late a UNC player on the sideline right in front of CPJ. The ref didn’t flag Smith but could have. CPJ grabbed him and jerked him off the field right there. It could have cost tech a First Down.

19 – Hill was fine. He came back in the game and even returned a kickoff, which is not something you want to do if you’re trying to protect a tender hamstring. and thanks for the kind words.

we need GT to keep trying as hard as they can and stay disciplined..week in and week out…we need Synjyn Days to see playing time and it appears that will only happen if we have a 21 pt lead or so..we need our backup to be ready …for obvious reasons and just in case anything should happen to TW

I liked it when CPJ said in the post game comments about how the offense got mad at him for punting on 4th and one…and his reply was, “if you cannot make ten yards in 3 downs, you need to get your butts off the field”, that was funny

Well, I heard that NC State’s defense is really bad since they’re missing like 5 starters. Hope it’s a big game for Sims. I see a lot of heart in that guy, if not the talent of Dwyer or the brute force of Allen. Takes a lot to learn a new position AND go to the top of the depth chart in one offseason. Days can learn something from him.

Hey Sweeting, don’t you and Thomas know anything about football? Football is a gentle game! You must gently lay the opponent on the turf with both hands using special care not to muss the dreadlock area. Not doing so will result in a 15yd personal foul penalty.

Agree with BS Patrol. That was a clean hit by Sweeting. Pretty soon the powers that be will have flags attached to everyone’s waist. I know the refs are trying to protect guys, but this is football. There are inherent risks, and everyone knows that going in. This rule is definitely being over officiated in college and the pros.

Ken –

Wonderful article about Tech’s passing game. Thank you for clearly illustrating that this isn’t a shift in philosophy for CPJ, that the players are just executing the passing game better in pretty much every phase. Washington definitely isn’t as pressured as he and Nesbitt were last year, his throws are more accurate and the receivers are doing a better job of running routes and catching the ball.

I honestly thought part of the reason we lost to Kansas last year was because CPJ kept trying to pass even though we weren’t completing them. He was probably seeing the same opportunities he saw this year, but the players couldn’t capitalize on them.

Hill claims that his hammy seized up/cramped before the ball got there and that’s why he lost concentration and dropped the pass…I hope that’s true…I am certainly giving the young man the benefit of the doubt because of the great way he has played so far this season…NC is a good team and we clearly outplayed them…we could have won by 14 or even 17 points…we got the W, which is all that matter. Got to be ready for the NC state Wolfpack…it’s an ACC game and they will be playing hard…Tech isn’t good enough to overlook anybody yet…Go Jackets!

We sure wanted Stephen Hill over in Athens and could really use him now. He’s a good one and the fact that GT has found a passing game to go along with that running attack is a bit unsettling to any true Dawg. Hopefully we will both be hitting on all cylinders when we meet.
