Greetings-
I’ve got to get cranking on a couple stories, but wanted to give everyone a chance to react. Three initial thoughts.
1) Georgia Tech was in a tight game for the first time, even trailing for most of the first quarter, and responded. The four-play, 61-yard drive for the go-ahead touchdown said plenty about the team’s ability to execute in the clutch.
2) Outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu has shown plenty of glimpses, but had a highlight-reel game Saturday, showing all manner of playmaking ability.
3) There was plenty to clean up from this game. I saw missed blocks, red-zone hiccups, missed tackles and poor kickoff coverage. Lots of room for improvement.
What do you think?
Thanks for reading. Please follow on Facebook and Twitter.

About #3: That sort of mess was expected after the level of competition was jacked up. Remember we were pretty sloppy in some areas in the season opener as well, but made improvements later on. Hope that trend continues, until our next competition jack up at Miami.

We barely had 20 more yards of offense than horrible UVA did last week against the same weak defense and they were at least on the road. The Johnson experiment is now officially over.

@Not impressed: yeah, but what matters is points, not yards of offense. We doubled UVA’s output on that count, didn’t we? (and without defensive TD’s)

GT could have had 2 more TD’s. Something to be said for winning ugly. The defense came through at the end, Clock management at the end of the game was suspect. But 4-0 is 4-0, CPJ will clean up the mistakes and be ready for NCSU.

If the players show up Tech should be 7-0 before the Clemson, Miami, VT stretch. This can be a special season. Especially now that the offense has rediscovered the forward pass. I thought it interesting to see Paul Johnson punting on the fourth and 5’s he went for the last three years. I have no complaints about the offense except the self inflected turnovers i.e. the interception that should have been thrown away, the fumble inside the 10 yard line, and in addition the dropped touchdown pass by Hill.
It’s the defense that concerns me. The good news is that they made plays on obvious passing downs to sack the quarterback. I continue to have concerns about the defensive line being blown of the line of scrimmage on some plays early and the confusion about passing coverages. We cannot still be allowing those easy yards by the time we get to the end of the year stretch. That being said the defense looks better than last year and if they cut down on the mistakes a great bowl game will be waiting for us.

ok,,we need Hill to be healthy and catching the ball like he’s done all year.Let’s hope his hamstring and his focus are intact. Defense ,while not “good” has moments, which is more than it had last year.Tevin has been nothing short of excellent,Sims looks more and more comfortable with each series,he could become a real weapon.Kudos to CPJ’s play calling this year, it just feels a bit more unpredictible,,after 4 games this is about all you could have asked for,,thats about all boys,,,you’re welcome

5150…you are right. I think the hit was legit. I don’t think it is good for the game to be so PC. Football is a physical sport and I don’t think the defense need to ol’lay just because the offensive player is aggressive. Aggressiveness belongs to the defense!!

Special Teams was much better, cannot remember the last time we blocked a punt. If the kicker could kick deeper, most returns would be inside the 30, way better coverage than last year. Team handled the larger, more aggressive team that attacks the option, much like LSU and Iowa of years past. Stephen Hill can be special. Biggest challenge for him is his own mind and psyche, holds the freaking ball away from his body, has to stop!

500 yards is a bad offensive day? And last time I checked, they left 10 points for sure on the board, probably could have another 14…Wins a win. It was sloppy, but a win. And to be honest, the defense looked pretty darn consistent (28 points as opposed to 21 given up to MTSU? Can’t complain). This is probably one of the best defenses we face all year. Atler – could you elaborate on Washington’s performance? The INT was bad, but so was the play call. They went one too many times to the well on that series. The bad pitch was a poor decision, but again the UNC defense was ready for the sweep. I think he held it together and made mostly good decisions. I’d give him a 7 out of 10.

This game might turn out to be a blessing in disguise. The team learned to pick itself after mistakes, how to come back when down, and to hang in during a close game. It was already mentioned but 17 points were taken away by a missed field goal, bad pitch, and a dropped pass so the game never really should have been that close. Hope Hill is okay though. The D made some great plays, but also some really sloppy ones. Good game film for the guys to see some things they did good and things they did bad. Give UNC credit to they played a tough game and disrupted several plays.

Congrats to GT.
A few observations from a Tar Heel and college football fan in general
Our offense is not as good as I anticipated. Our defense is every bit as good as I expected. The difference in the game from my perspective – CPJ is a master play caller. He caught us with our pants down a few times and that was the difference in the game. Talent wise I think we are a little bit better but…..
Your defense is as bad as I thought it was and I think it will cost you a couple of games over the course of the season. I think you should scrap the 3 – 4. The 3- 4 requires players that GT is likely not positioned to recruit and land. Look at what Boise St. is able to do with similar defensive talent.
CPJ is able to take 2 – 3 – 4 star players and create a damn fine offense. Your defense (scheme wise) doesn’t allow similar success with 2 – 3 – 4 star players.
Bottom line when facing equal talent GT will struggle when a team has more than a week to prepare – see your bowl game success under CPY.
All in all it was a fun game to watch – it would have been better if the score were reversed but………

Ramblin Man I agree. The game should be good learning tool for the players. They played hard. They made a few mistakes. I can say the same for both teams. If CPJ is as good a coach as I think he is, he’s got a good game film to teach with. With continued improvement, we should have a 9-3 or 10-2 year aas long they stay focused and intense. The only team I am wary of right now is on ESPN right now, but we have been pretty lucky against in the past. Some concern for VT and you can never be sure with UGA.

Mental mistakes left 17 points on the field (missed field goal, fumble around the 10 that Carolina got to run the half out with, and the dropped TD pass), or the score would have been 52-28. The Jackets rushed for over 300 yards against one of the top rushing defenses in the country and put up nearly 500 yards of total offense against a traditionally stout defense with a projected 3 first round NFL draft choices playing for them.
Also, absent a couple of mental lapses on defense, the score could have easily been 52-14. Special teams were atrocious except the punt block.
There’s plenty to like about the game but also plenty to work on as well. Things are never as good as they look or as bad.

Great game, great game!!! The 2 teams, Tech and Carolina got after each other today. Tech came out on top as I expected, fighting for it all the way. The GT offense looked really good, the defense is definitely improving. Can’t take anything away from Carolina. They have a very good football team. I thought Washington played a very disciplined game except for that 1 pick. He looks comfortable and under control. Hill is coming into his own and will improve each week. Sims is starting to come around and will be a major weapon as the season progress. The A-backs have got it go’n on and the O-line need not be big concern anymore. Our Tech D is I believe improving every game. Although today they had a lapse or two. It seems the D play much better when they’re attacking. Was at the game today in the northwest stands,,,the area was rocking. We were after the refs on those BAD calls!!! HAD A WONDERFUL DAY,,,TECH WON!!!!

Offense: For the most part good. I think Washington and Days need to take a few lessons from each other. Washington needs to learn how to keep the ball himself sometimes. He has got the pitch but the keep is where he had success later in the game in the Red Zone. I agree that something happened to Hill on that Dropped pass. I dont know what and hope it isn’t major. I would like to see some more push up the middle. I dont think our line has the ‘umph’ do make the wholes for the B-back. Saw a few here and there to keep the Heels guessing but nothing really damaging, or I am just having nostalgia for John Dwyer. Passe were good for the most part. Final grade: B
Defense: Bottom Line Up Front – if we can play 2 halves of good defense, I dont think anyone can will stop us. The D has random moments of both greatness and “WTF?!” mostly solid play but need to work on that 2 min drill defense. It is coming together from a season perspective. I think there should be a guy who hits Al Groh with a cattle prod every quarter just so he will go over and yell at the Defense. That is when they started playing better. And is it just me or are we better when we blitz. I am happy that we are getting the to the QB more, which showed in this game. Final Grade:C+
Special Teams: Keep practicing. We need to get better on kickoff return coverage. I didnt like the way they got to the 30s before we brought them down. Punts took some bad hops, one was really in UNCs favor. Final Grade: C-
Overall: I will take it. Though the way Clemson is playing has me a little worried. NC State is on the docket next so, I’ll worry about them after they beat VT or implode like they normally do.

Both pass plays to Hill worked about as good as you could design (minus the unexplained drop) a pass play. Tech used the run to setup the defender so he thought he was going to make a tackle…only to be surprised…greatly!

Good evening gentlemen…..and trolls too, I guess. Just in from Atlanta….FINALLY. Stopped at the bookstore for awhile and then for dinner on the way back to Augusta. GREAT meeting 5150 today and look forward to meeting some more of you at future games.
As for the game today, a win is a win. Some good, some bad on both sides of the ball. I don’t like to question CPJ, but a couple of plays today were sort of strange—-the shovel pass and the 2nd down loss by TW very late in the game. D looked great at times and lousy at times, but I would say that UNC was actually a very well coached team, and although I don’t think we were “lucky” per se, I guess we could say that we were fortunate. Somebody mentioned the line needing to open more holes for the B-backs—I liked it when we let the A-backs hit the holes in the middle that the line AND the B-backs opened for them. Great adjustment by CPJ there. Somebody said we left 10 points on the field; we actually left 17 points on the field—-the 1st drive fumble, the missed FG, and Hill’s drop. But other than that one drop, Hill was major league today. That one-handed sideline reception reminded me of Calvin…..AWESOME.
Anyway, good to be back home in Augusta with another W under our belts.

GT played fine today. Clean up some of the mistakes, not all of them, and GT is likely into the 40s on points today. Groh still seems to be calling a lot of vanilla schemes, but it seemed like he reached into his bag of tricks late in the game, calling more stunts, blitzes, etc. The hope is that the team takes some lessons from this game and makes improvements going forward.

I sense that CPJ has confidence in the D this year. He’s not willing to go on 4th down nearly as much. Settling for FG and even punting for field position. I give him a lot of credit if year’s past strategies, many that seemed very questionable at the time, were mainly to cover for a weak defense.

Otherwise, while not the cleanest game by either side, I’m very encouraged by the response and will to win that this team showed. One hi-lite and one low. Hill’s one-hander will be remembered but the missed open field reception will not. Hope Stephen doesn’t let it get him down…as that kinda thing did last year. Still did NOT like him taking himself out with the ‘hamstring’ – taped up and back in on next series. If you watched Tech last year, he’s done that before. Bow up, Stephen, it’s all in front of you.
And we did have to beat the refs – bad spots all day long and the H2H call was the worst I’ve seen in a decade. It’s football, not flag-ball. Lowering you shoulder and knocking the receiver on his rear-end is the way it’s coached and should be applauded, not penalized. I’m betting Coach Groh did just that on the sidelines.

One thing that needs improvement is coverage of tight ends. They are wide open, the QBs see them, and pass it to them. Where are Tech’s 3-4 LBs to cover them? Also, I haven’t seen a tight end used by Tech since I was going there during the ‘71-’72 seasons when we had Mike Oven. I recall seeing him catch one pass, but don’t recall any more. Why does Tech avoid using a tight end? Other teams have been using them for big gains and scores.

The reason CPJ doesn’t use a tight end is because it gives him the option of veering in both directions without the loss of the lead blocker for the slotback. Depending on which side the veer is executed, one of the slotbacks (Smith/Roddy) acts as a de-facto tight end, and the other as either the pitch guy or receiver.
Also the traditional TE is supposed to be the big & heavy kind, which doesn’t fit in with the fast, dodgy type runners you need at slotback.

Gr8, so I gather you’re currently living in the northeast. Glad that you’re able to get down for any of the games. Other than a couple of years in Knoxville after finishing Tech, I have been in Augusta all my life, so going to games is a breeze for me. And I’ve been in Section 225 since I started buying season tickets right after graduating. Have a great time in Miami; that was one of my projected possible defeats 6 weeks ago, but our improvement and Miami’s problems may change my mind. NC State was another one, and that one’s looking good now too. Hope you can make it on Nov 26; we need to fill that stadium with gold. It’s great Tech made the drive, stopped NC on their last drive, and won. However, they passed up too many opportunities, and should have scored several more touch downs. The passing saved them as they kept NC lose, and maybe PJohnson is finally realizing a one dimensional offense won’t take his team to the next level and consistently beat good teams. I like what he’s doing with the offense now, but the defense still has too many holes and gives up too many points.
