Greetings-
Sorry I haven’t had anything up . Friday’s kind of supposed to be my day off (not complaining) and I’ve got some projects I am trying to get to. (Anyone want to rent a two-bedroom apartment in Buckhead?)
Anyway, I hope you’ll accept this story about Georgia Tech’s streak of touchdowns on the first play of scrimmage as my blog for the day. It’s going in Saturday’s paper and will be up online before too long. Hopefully you also read a story posted Thursday about the Ramblin’ Wreck. (The newspaper’s style, I’ve learned, favors Wreck over Reck. My apologies to the Reck purists. I think history favors your spelling.) Another story should be coming up this afternoon about Paul Johnson’s practice of inserting three or four extra plays into the game plan designed to be momentum changers.
To put Georgia Tech’s first-play success into context, consider that Virginia Tech is the only other team in the ACC, SEC and Big 10 that has reached the end zone on its first play from scrimmage in any game this season, a combined 1-for-104.
The Yellow Jackets, meanwhile, are 3-for-3. Tech will try to make it 4-for-4 against North Carolina Saturday. Tar Heels coach Everett Withers said he won’t be thinking about the streak. Defensive coordinator Art Kaufman said he wouldn’t approach it any differently than any other play. But Withers said he thought his players would be more heightened to avoid becoming the fourth consecutive victim.
“I don’t think you have to mention it” for them to be aware, Withers said.
The first score was a relative gimme, a 5-yard toss to A-back Orwin Smith after Tech had forced a turnover deep in Western Carolina territory. The second was designed with the intent to score, a 73-yard touchdown pass to A-back Tony Zenon against Middle Tennessee State. The third, a 95-yard run by Smith against Kansas that became the longest run from scrimmage in Tech history, was a good play call bolstered by superior execution.
“You always have an expectation (a play will break open),”coach Paul Johnson said. “Was I counting on it? No.”
Georgia Southern coach Jeff Monken, who was an assistant to Johnson for 13 years, thinks Johnson’s option-based spread offense might be more conducive to opening strikes. First, the offense has big-play capability and second, teams often aren’t prepared for the speed with which Tech runs it because it is difficult to simulate in practice.
It doesn’t hurt that Tech has home-run hitters like Smith, Zenon and wide receiver Stephen Hill.
“We’ve been fortunate in that we’ve hit some big plays,” Johnson said. “I think we all know that [streak] is probably coming to an end.”
Whatever the reason, it’s a curious and mind-boggling streak. Several FBS schools queried haven’t scored on the first play of a game in several years.
Asked Wednesday, Johnson said he already knew what play he was going to call first.
“You’ll be unimpressed,” he told reporters.
The more important opinion will be rendered by North Carolina’s defense.
What do you think? Does Tech go 4-for-4?
Thanks for reading. Please follow on Facebook and Twitter.

Run the B-Back sweep to X backup QB David Sims and have him throw it to Stephen Hill for a quick strike = 4 in a row. Nice thought, but I even doubt it. I will settle on a TD in the first possession. Don’t care if it is 15 plays or one play.

I love a coach who can make a comment like “you’ll be unimpressed” and cause me to wonder “Okay, is he messin’ with me so he can hit a huge pass over the middle or is he thinking that’s what I’ll be wondering so it’s actually gonna be the basic veer…?” Coaches at UNC have gotta be sweating this game. Coaches at NCSU are DEFINITELY sweating next week’s!

No turnovers and limit penalties (minimize mental mistakes) and the Jackets should be okay. I suspect there will be a few pass plays throw in to keep the Carolina defenders honest; even some new formations based on the North Carolina defensive schemes. If anyone thinks Paul Johnson isn’t expecting blitzes and end crashes, well, they don’t know Paul Johnson very well.
Also, people may not know this, but Al Groh has owned North Carolina’s offense for the past several years with his 3-4 defense, so I hope he’ll be dialing it up tomorrow. This may be the game we’ll finally start to see GA Tech’s defense starting to open up it’s playbook a bit.

The last two were designed based on defensive tendencies seen on film and experienced in games last season. MTSU was seen to the corner up so it was a downfield bomb to an A-back. Kansas “flowed hard to the A-back in motion” so CPJ dialed up a counter. UNC’s defense hasn’t changed much since last year, but they are heralded as a fundamentally sound defense. What I take from that is that perhaps they have a tendency we can try to exploit with our very first play from scrimmage, but more likely this defense will be shedding blocks and at not allowing anything to go all the way to a TD. We might bust a long gain or surprise them, but they’re bigger and faster. Therefore I expect them to stop us even when we break a runner past the first or second level of their defense. TD’s in this game will be tougher to earn. We’ll do it, but it might be a lot slower.

I loved that counter play that went for the TD. First and last time I have seen that play run out of this offense (with the pulling guard and pulling tackle). Are we not allowed to run it again? Usually CPJ is good at milking a play until the defense stops it, but we did not run that play again (to either side) the whole game.

Personally, the Death March drive is most satisfying when its a close game with Tech up by a score in the third quarter and the other team really desperately wants to score but our defensive adjustments have just put our offense on the field. The it begins. 4 yard run after 4 yard run. First down after emotional first down. The defense gets more and more desperate and out of position. 13 plays later we’re on their one yard line, but instead of the QB sneak we run the pitch to a wide-open A-back just to show we could’ve busted it open anytime we wanted to, but we chose to run the clock down. THAT is how wills are broken.

A Pass is the easiest to stretch the D, but so many things can go wrong with a pass.
The EAGLES ran this fake pitch to the counter trap against the Falcons. It was good until the Falcons didn’t bite. I like that play but add the reverse part. It will look like the play O. Smith scored on and suck the D to the middle so the Sweep outside will run right by them.

I have a hunch CPJ is gonna call run plays all day. Time for GT to concentrate, focus on the fundamentals and great team dynamic that has gotten them 3 victories so far … and control the clock. UNC can’t score very much if their offense isn’t on the field and we have the ball for 40+ minutes.

1 4 GT, I never said you were a UGA fan. However, even though Dooley might have said it, he was definitely not the first GOOGLE it and you will see that Woody Hayes and General Neyland said it long before Dooley ever did, although it has also been attributed to others as well. Orchestrated a stunning 23-14 upset of 11th-ranked Notre Dame on Nov. 6, 1976, a game in which Tech defeated the Fighting Irish without completing a single pass…………Before the 5-foot-8 1/2, 170-pound Lanier even had a chance to look for a receiver, he was enveloped by Notre Dame’s massive defensive star, Ross Browner. On the sideline, Yellow Jackets coach Pepper Rodgers watched with disgust as Browner and teammate Willie Fry celebrated the 8-yard loss.
“They jumped up and started strutting around, like they always do when they sack somebody,” Rodgers recalled. “I turned to one of my coaches and said, ‘I’ll tell you this. We may not win this game, but that’s the last time they’re going to strut on our field. From this point on, they’re going to play against the option.”‘

That 1976 loss pissed off Dan Devine so much that he ran up the score against Tech in 1977 at South Bend. That score was 69 – 14, ND. And then in 1978, when he brought them back to Atlanta, he tried to run it up again, but the Tech student body who sat behind the visitors’ bench back then, started launching liquor bottles at him and the team. Not a proud moment for Tech, but aside from what the students actually did, he deserved it.

superDawg, I wasn’t bragging about what the Tech students did; I think it was totally uncalled for, not to mention dangerous as hell. But at least we at Tech admit what our students and fans may have done through the years. You mutts live in a constant state of denial that your fans are BY FAR the worst fans anywhere. I have been spit at, an aunt of mine was vomted on, a USC fan had a cooler thrown at him. Those are all just isolated events that don’t make the news, and there are thousands of similar incidents that have happened in Athens. And of course there is the trashing of the campus which cost the Georgia taxpayer bundles of money—at least that one DID make the news—national news even. But what do you expect when you have probably 75% of a crowd of 92,000 mostly rednecks who are so drunk they can barely walk. So get off your redneck high horse and face it—your fans are an embarrassment to the state of Georgia and to college football as a whole.

Fox Sports quotes NC coach Withers: “First you take away the dive…Then you take away the quarterback. Then you leverage the pitchman and take him away”.
Not sure what he means by leverage.
Maybe the concentrate on stooping the dive first and then move players to the outside.
Unless we really can beat the UNC defensive front (their strength), I’d think we would go light on the dive.
Seems to me they would want us to run it since that is what they want to stop first and have the best chance at stopping of our 4 options.

Welcome back tar heel/dog fan, nice to see you’ve not lost any of your gall this early! You come in here and spout nonsense without anything to back it up, If you can remember back a few hours ago I asked you why you thought UNC would win? UNC has not been able to shut down this offense in the last 2 years and the team they are facing today is playing better and executing better than the previous 2 years. The team UNC is putting on the field today is very much the same as last year’s yet you’d have us believe they are better and will put athletes on the field that can stop the Tech offense. I welcome a discourse on the two teams and why you think UNC will win. If all you have is invective and b.s. please find somewhere else to spew it!

Ol’Fan I didn’t see your question (I seldom go back and read missed pages).
I think we will win because our defense is better. The team we will put on the field is not the same as last year – remember we had a few NCAA difficulties last year
Our D line is very good and I think we will force GT to use the pass (something we brought to college football) more than they desire.
GT appears to be a well oiled offensive machine but I think your big numbers are more a result of who you played rather than an indicator of what you have.

Tar Heel, interesting. In looking at the depth chart it seemed to me that a lot of the 2 deep is the same as last year’s team. I don’t argue the talent level at UNC is better than what Tech has faced so far this year. Yes, the numbers that Tech has put up has been against lesser competition but it also has not been duplicated by any other team this year. Do I expect Tech to put up their per game averages of 675 yards and 59 points? Not at all but neither do I think they will be shut down. All of our O line and backs were part of the game last year and they put up good number then. Also, theis is the defense’s 2nd year under GAG and so far they seem to be flying to the ball and playing their assignments well. If UNC wins I will say good game but I do think Tech will win for the 3rd year in a row

That’s going to be a fun matchup. FSU played their guts out against OK last week and Manuel got banged up and Clemson had a big day against Auburn. My question is has Clemson gotten to the point where they can win a big game. They’s had such a history of teasing their fans and falling on their face. I think FSU is better on D but can they muster enough offense? The matchup between Jimbo and Dabo (gotta love southern names) I think will be the deciding factor and in my opinion Jimbo is the better coach.
