Tech makes poll debut

Putting up 178 points in three games, including 66 Saturday in a win over Kansas, has brought some recognition to Georgia Tech.
The Yellow Jackets are in both top-25 polls for the first time since their loss to Kansas last September. Tech is No. 24 in the USA Today coaches poll and No. 25 in the Associated Press writers poll, released Sunday.
Tech received 118 points in the coaches poll for 24th, one spot ahead of North Carolina, which will play the Jackets Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Last week, Tech received nine points and was 34th overall.
In the AP poll, Tech received 59 points, moving them up from 38th place in last week’s poll, when it was given two points.

I remain skeptical until I see them beat a good team. Get back to me after they beat Miami and Maryland.

I hope they go undefeated, don’t get me wrong, but I’ll believe they are one of the best teams in the nation when there’s more evidence.

Just keep getting better Tech. I hope CPJ is the toughest he has been on them this week than he has to date. Don’t want this team thinking it is better than it really is(see the CFA Bowl vs. LSU). This team seems to come out focused and really wants to play well for each other. Hope that continues. UNC is stout on the defensive line so the pass may be more important than ever for loosening up that defense. Ill be there bright and early! Give em Hell Tech!!!

Please THROW AWAY all these damn POLLS. They are not worth the paper they are written on.
1st poll should be after the 4th game. Most of the games before that are preseason………….I said MOST because TV has to have some Big games to get people attention early. Many RANKED teams have lost or had too much crap change from last year (Ohio St) and shouldn’t have been in the pols to start with.

This is great. All we have to do is keep getting better as the competition gets better. Kansas was tougher than the other two have been (the close-scoring first half of Saturday’s game happened and will not be ignored in the team offices at GT), and UNC will be tougher than Kansas. It’s a perfect situation for development even though the storyline in the media might be “it’s a trap!” Our defense will be heavily tested by UNC’s highly efficient quarterback and WR combo’s. We’ll win it on offense, but not by the margins we’ve been treated to up to now. We can pack out the stadium (bring sunscreen) and get nice and loud to disrupt this QB’s audibles. The Tech coaches and players just have to take care of business from there.

Like to see a little more pass rush . Did slightly better in the second half when Kansas had to abandone the run. That and 3rd down D has me slightly worried but the Offense looks greased up and ready to roll

Defense will face it’s first real test next saturday and hopefully can answer the call like they did in the 3rd quarter. If the offense continues to play like a team I am not worried about GT scoring on UNC. It probably won’t be like the last three games but I think CPJ will grind it out wear out the UNC defense and walk away with a W. Unlike previous years there is more than two or three threats on the field as Sims, Smith, Washington, Hill, Melton, Jones, Peeples, Days, Lyons and Zenon have all proved so far that you better account for each on every play, which as we have seen can’t be done.

The D let way to many third and longs get completed in the first half. I was excited and worried everytime the O hit a quick strike since the D was going to have to hit the field with little rest. It is a young D though and there is going to be growing pains. There was no pass rush in the first half, but it did get a little better in the 3rd quarter. It looks like Peters is slow off the snap so hopefully he corrects that. Maybe Groh is holding back on stunts to use them against bigger competition.

I agree about the Third Down Defense… it was pathetic in the first half and that will be critical when we get into ACC play. D played much better in 2nd half, but need that effort in the 1st half vs UNC.

I definitely like the pass balance, but again, accuracy was off in the 1st half (much better in 2nd).

I really thought the media wouldn’t rank us until we got to 4-0, but I guess scoring almost 60 pts a game and setting an FBS record for 12.1 yd/rush had something to do with it. I believe this team can handle the attention and still play well. CPJ has a chip on his shoulder and for good reason. Miami looked good against as bad an OSU team as I can remember. Why does the NCAA let Miami play their stars when they were on the take…and I’m not talking about a few jerseys…hmm they must be analyzing all their evidence before making a judgment…or maybe their first trying to figure out how to destroy the evidence that incriminates themselves. If the NCAA had an ounce of integrity, they would let appeals be heard by impartial 3rd parties. Forgive the rant but these jokers are ruining the sport.

You are probably the same person that said MTSU ans Kansas would be a good test before they smashed them. I’d be more concerned if they struggled against these teams. Try being positive. This is a focused team. Will they go undefeated? Don’t know but going into week 4 they still have a chance to win them all. GO JACKETS!!!!!

I am glad to see GT ranked in both polls……….fairly quick climb and I hope we keep climbing all season!

NC is a very solid team. The offense will need to continue playing well, eliminate any & all turnovers as well as find the correct balance of run/pass plays. The defense simply needs to find a way to get pressure on the QB quicker! Special teams play concerns me more than any other facet this year. I epect a 7-10 point victory for GT if the team can accomplish all of the above items.

Potential recruits must be loving what they are seeing at GT……especially the tall, fast, talented wide receivers (similar to Calvin Johnson, D. Thomas & Stephen Hill). It just makes sense to play at GT; put up HUGE stats; get compared to the three stellar players listed above; and then follow these three to the NFL……..YES, Stephen Hill will be a Round #1 or #2 NFL draft pick after his senior season!

I hope this is not short lived. All Jacket fans know that we do better as the underdogs. Anytime we get a little praise, we always come out and lay an egg. I don’t understand how coaches can change and players can change but that still seems to hold true. Believe me, I hope it doesn’t but I’ve been a tech fan all my life (33 yrs) and it happens everytime. Anyone remember last year when we went to Kansas fresh off a number 15 ranking and got embarrassed. I would rather we didn’t know what we’re ranked until the end of the season. We play better with a chip on our shoulder.

I think we’re right where we deserve to be. Another win, we should get to around 20 or so. I don’t see much separation between Tech and, say, Nebraska. After the top 6 or 7 teams, there’s a lot of drop off. The rest of the top 25 is pretty much even as far as I see it. I don’t see any reason why we couldn’t beat UF, Ark, or especially South Carolina.

I have to say that Tevin Washington is not getting enough credit. He just always seems to make the right decisions. He underthrows the ball from time to time, but he is throwing it to the right guy. He also has shown improvement every game. I hope he continues to develop. If the defense starts to gel at midseason like I’m expecting, Tech is going to be highly competitive!

Kansas had the absolute worst defense I have ever seen on the Flats. With that said, I felt like when CPJ got a team on the field with most of his recruits you would see this offense take off. His system is perfect for GaTech (won’t ever be able to recruit with the factories), and he will keep us in the national rankings most every year now. Bank on it!

I’ve said all along this offense was designed as a dual threat offense, but the ‘experts” stuck in the wishbone stereotype mindset refused to believe it. Tech hasn’t had an accurate enough passer to be able to utilize the pass. If those ‘A backs remain a pass threat, the opposing D’s are going to have to respect it and you get the kind of yardage and scoring totals we saw yesterday. Clicking on all cylinders, this offense is potent. Granted the opposition has been sub-par to date. I still believe Tech is on the brink of a special season and we’ll see scores in the 40’s-50’s consistently. The main question is: can the defense hold the opposition below Tech’s prolific scoring totals ? I’ve seen this before at Georgia Southern. Scores like 50 something to 30 something on a regular basis.

Like everyone else I was disappointed in the defense the first half of the game but I don’t think the improvement in the second half had anything to do with Kansas having to throw the ball.

Groh made a defensive adjustmate right before halftime that seemed to produce results. On 3rd down he substituted about five different players. I know that Brandon Watts came and Drummond went out. I think it was two linebackers, two linemen and a defensive back.

Once he started doing this the pressure on the QB was much better and the defense vastly improved. I hope he keeps making the 3rd down substitution because the regular defense is great against the run but can’t develope pressure on the QB.

Little known fact… This was designed as a pass first offense at Ga Southern. Those slot backs or A backs as they are called were split wider and primarily pass receivers. CPJ moved ‘em in tighter and it became primarily a run offense. He hasn’t forgotten those plays. I’m most encouraged by the utilization of those A backs as receivers. That opens up a whole new can of worms for opposing defenses. They just thought they had a headache preparing before.

After watching the games this weekend I feel we’re very close to being a very, very good team. I am impressed with the total team effort shown in all facets of the game. You cannot have long runs or pass completions without every player doing his job. I’ve been wating for the right combination of players to allow CPJ to open the playbook and we’re now seeing what this offense if capable of. Yes, the competition is about to get toughter but this is a team that is coming together as well.

As to the defense there is no question this team is more athletic than any has been at Tech in a very long time. Their grasp of CAG’s scheme is growing with each game and I love how the linebackers and dbs fly to the ball with hostile intent. Are they a top 10 defense? No, no at this time but I do feel they can and will be a top 20-25 type defense and with this offense clicking this team can go a long way.

One other thought that occurs to me is just how young this team is and how that bodes for the future. It will return 17 starters next year!

Great job by a young team thus far. Tevin Washington deserves most of the credit. Unlike Josh Nesbitt, Tevin has always been an option quarterback. That translates into making the correct reads almost every time. Josh Nesbitt was 50/50 on making the right reads, even in his senior year. Washington’s ability to read the defense in real time will translate against bigger, stronger, faster teams into first downs (just ask South Carolina about it). The defense is always giving you something, and this offense is designed to take advantage of the holes. As much as I loved Nesbitt, he couldn’t make reads consistently and he couldn’t hit the deep pass when it was wide open. So far, Tevin is executing flawlessly. I can’t wait to see him light up UNC!
