Greetings-
Sorry for the delay. I just got back from an interview with John and Mary Brock, who provided the lead gift for the Georgia Tech indoor facility. Very gracious couple and big Tech fans, as you might imagine. I can tell you that they don’t have keys to the building. We met outside and had to wait for a project supervisor to let us in. A Q&A should be up by the end of the week.
Got a few leftover notes that didn’t make the notebook, and some sort of unrelated but interesting stuff from coach Paul Johnson about his start in coaching and why he calls plays.
Here’s the link to the notebook, which has all the lineup changes and a few other notes. You also should read Jeff Schultz’s post about what Johnson said about how he would stop the rash of NCAA rules violations.
1. Johnson lauded starting B-back David Sims again for his work ethic and unwillingness to give up when he switched positions and started fourth on the depth chart. In talking about Sims as well as B-back Charles Perkins, he described how Sims’ reaction isn’t necessarily typical.
“I think that sometimes, there’s such an expectation level (to receive playing time), and I’m not talking about Charles in particular. This day and age, guys think they’re entitled. You’ve got to earn something. You don’t just get it because you did something in high school or you did something somewhere else. You’ve got to come in and win the job. David had two ways to go when he was fourth. He could have pouted and left or he could make up his mind that he’s going to outwork guys and try to win the job. To his credit, he took the latter. I think that’ s great example for other guys who aren’t where hey want to be.”
I spoke with Sims Monday after practice and he was pretty candid about being stuck down on the depth chart at quarterback and how he actually did consider transferring. It’ll be in a story scheduled to post Wednesday afternoon and run in Thursday’s paper.
2. In the story I mentioned Monday about the five guys who made a splash in camp, I asked about backup outside linebacker Brandon Watts. I decided not to include him – the story’s linked here – but Johnson said that he’ll be the No. 3 outside linebacker and be on the nickel and dime packages and also play a lot of special teams.
“Brandon Watts is a really good athlete,” he said. “I think he’s more comfortable with what he’s doing. He knows his assignments better.”
4. I mentioned this in a comment on the post about the depth chart, but Johnson made a point to say that just because a player is second on the chart doesn’t mean he’s the next option. A case in point is true freshman corner Jamal Golden, who is listed as a backup. Johnson said he’s more like the fifth or sixth option at cornerback. If Rod Sweeting or Louis Young had to miss time, the next option might be the other No. 2 corner, Michael Peterson. After that, the next choice might be backup safety Jemea Thomas, or possibly Thomas would play safety and starting safety Rashaad Reid would move to corner.
This isn’t to denigrate Golden, but to clarify.
That said, I wonder how many teams in the ACC have three true freshmen on the offensive line two-deep. (Tech has Trey Braun and Shaquille Mason at guard and Errin Joe at tackle. Joe was recently switched out there.) If I have time, I’m going to take a look. I’m going to guess the answer is not many, if any.
Certainly to judge by experience, that is a thin, thin group.
5. Interestingly, to me, at least, Johnson apparently decided not to take advantage of a pretty useful source of intelligence about Western Carolina. Georgia Southern is in the Southern Conference with the Catamounts, and is coached by Jeff Monken, who coached A-backs at Tech and has been a longtime aide to Johnson. Johnson said he spoke last week with Monken about Georgia Southern, but not about Western Carolina.
5. In his answers about Miami and NCAA rules malfeasance, Johnson mentioned how a Tech player got wrongly slammed on a football blog and how it represents the lack of accountability for some media, a pet peeve of his. This happened last week. I confess I don’t remember what blog it was, but there was a post about college football players tweeting things that were obscene or, at the least, ill-advised. Quarterback Tevin Washington was one of the players included.
After Johnson and others at Tech started getting e-mails from fans and alumni, Tech’s sports information staff looked into it and confirmed that Washington doesn’t even have a Twitter account and that the writer was quoting a high school football player in Michigan named Tevin Washington.
6. Johnson unfortunately didn’t bite on my question about what sort of student he was at Western Carolina, but he did talk about his first job – as an in-school suspension teacher at his old high school. After graduating from Western Carolina, he was set to take a teaching and coaching job in the eastern half of the state when he ran into his old high school coach over the summer.
Johnson told him his plans and his old coach asked him to come coach for him instead. Johnson said he’d tried, but that there weren’t any jobs available. So he told Johnson to go see the superintendent. Johnson did, and was told again that no jobs were available. Johnson reported back, and his coach suggested he go back again.
Said Johnson “I went back the next day, and Mr. McGee, who was the superintendent, he said, ‘I don’t have any jobs, I don’t know where I’m going to put you, but I’m going to hire you. We’ll figure it out once school starts.”
His first job was ISS, where, he said, he read “Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” cover to cover. (The paperback version available on Amazon is 1,264 pages.)
He mentioned that he was able to call plays in that job, which led to questions about that topic.
He said he has called plays in all but two games as a head coach, his first two at Georgia Southern in 1997. He said early on that year, he was walking around practice monitoring when his former boss, Erk Russell, asked him what he was doing, and told him to get over to the quarterbacks to coach them and to call the plays, because that was his strength and why he got the job.
“I got to thinking about it, and after a couple games, I’m like, If that’s the best way I can help the team, then that’s what I need to do,” he said.
Johnson said he doesn’t hand over playcalling to an assistant because first, he’d end up second-guessing that coach and if he’s going to second guess anyone, he should just do it himself.
Another reason is that he knows when he wants to go for it on fourth down and so he can call plays accordingly. As a coordinator, when the offense got to the opposing 45-yard line on third down, he’d ask the head coach if he had two downs to make a first or just one.
“Because it makes a difference,” he said, “if it’s 3rd down and 5 and you know you’ve got two (plays), or if it’s 3rd and 6 and you know you’ve got one. As a head coach, I already know that.”
Probably more than what you wanted to know, but hopefully interesting to know.
Lastly…
It’s interesting to me that many of you say you’re tired of the non-Tech fans, but some of you can’t seem to keep yourselves from engaging in trash talk with them. My suggestion has been to ignore it. I’m going to try something with this post. Anyone who responds to a non-Tech fan, or the first to independently bring up Georgia, will be banned for a week.
If I had to guess, that means refraining from responding to how Johnson’s first job was good preparation for coaching at Tech, how Johnson screwed up some fourth-down call against Georgia, how Jeff Monken can’t help Tech because Monken can’t play defense, how it figures that Johnson would have to learn how to coach from a Georgia coach, something about the over/under on Tech’s win total, Tech being on probation, Johnson can’t recruit, Tech fans are nerds, etc. On that line of thought, anyone who brings up Javaris Crittenton will also face a week ban, because anyone who thinks that topic is appropriate to use for trash talk deserves at least that much.
My rationale is there’s always going to be people making snarky comments on this blog as long as they know they’re going to get a reaction. If you can’t resist responding, then maybe I can help. I invite you to tell me how idiotic I am. You wouldn’t be the first.

Gonna be hard to legislate that one Ken.
I’m a Dawg through and through but I also love college football. I think Johnson is a great coach who could win big in the SEC at UGA if given the opportunity. Yes, he did coach with Erk and yes he would be our coach right now if Erk had gotten the UGA job after Dooley retired.
I’m asking the Tech folks on here to pull for us this weekend and shutup the blue rash that is threatening college football.

Won’t know for sure until I see them play. G-Day game 2011 versus 2010 was lights out difference, especially up the middle. Geathers took the recruiting of Jenkins personally and has really stepped it up. He has great blood lines.
All the parts are there. There were some times last year where we looked lost. Houston is in the NFL but clearly took plays off. I believe Jarvis Jones with Ogletree will be better. Also will be better because interior DL will command double teams unlike last year.
The similarities are striking between GT and UGA.
1 or 2 more stops per game on 3rd down drops the PPG allowed by a TD and that equals about 4 more wins each.

Nice read, Watts is going to be flying all over the field this year, hope he takes an INT to the house. I wonder if they ever thought of moving him to Safety kind of like that other team did with Thomas Davis and he was All-American Safety, they are same mold size and speed.
Can wait to see Sims and Perkins, I think Sims doing so well is going to help Perkins, he will be so motivated to prove himself to the coaches.

Lex, how do you honestly assess your defense?
My two cents.
I think they are going to be tremendous. Second year of the 3-4 makes a huge difference. Ask Nick Saban.
UGA has a MAJOR infusion of talent ala Jenkins and Jarvis Jones
Ogletree is a beast and has moved closer to the ball. He will be all over the field.
Bottom line for too many years UGA defense sat back and waited. No more
We will attack and force turnovers. They were way up last year .
Either way the last few years we have scored plenty of points to win. 32 ppg last year a touchdown better than Tech.
If this defense is even halfway better we are in for a much better year.
PS Almost every magazine ive read agrees that UGA defense will be much much better.

Defenses of both can make a major difference by making just one or two more stops per game like Lex said. With tech’s offense, a reduction in lost fumbles and two more stops per games could mean a two to one time of possession and alot more wins.

35-0 at the half. Enter starters for one drive in the 3rd qtr… 42-0. Enter subs: 2 field goals and a TD to finish at 55. Western picks up 10 on subs. Finishing score… 55-10.
Perhaps I should deduct 14 for turnovers but I am hoping for a couple of great special teams plays.

With 9 of 10 people in GA being fans of “you know who” … and yes, with GT having lost 9 out of 10 football games to “you know who” … its a trying situation to say the least. But as a life-long GT fan, it is nothing new. Speaking for myself, it makes me more loyal to GT academics and sports than ever.

I would guess we’re starting on a Thursday to ease ourselves even more into the season and give the players 9 days between games 1 and 2. I love the schedule set-up. Early first game against a warm-up opponent. Harder but still manageable first ROAD game after 9 days. Still harder home game that’s the final “tune-up” before ACC play. It’s like getting 3 scrimmages of increasing difficulty before we really have to be in mid-season form (at least, that’s how I HOPE it plays out).

As for Chris Jackson, hard to say. i heard good things from players over the summer. consider that he hasn’t played in a game since 2008. from what i gather, he’s got a ways to go still to re-gain his form.

I didn’t grow up a Tech fan, so my only other in-depth experience with a GT coach was Chan. I absolutely hated how conservative he was, especially with some of the NFL talent he had. That’s why I love CPJ and his aggressive style. Anything that you dig up on how our coach shaped his philosophy is really, really interesting to me. Keep it coming.
Sims sounds like he is going to be huge for us. If he was recruited for QB in this system, you know he can run. I’m really excited to see the true freshmen on Thursday once the score gets run up. This schedule sets up so great for a young team.

Ken, I think CPJ would be much lesser of a coach if he wasn’t calling plays. I don’t usually believe HCs should be calling their own plays, but his system is unique, and he is clearly the master at it. I would not envy the assistant who has to call plays for him.

Excited to watch Sims run over people. Excited to watch the defense look like they have their eyes open this year. Not so excited to have to watch it on ESPN3. I love that Johnson gave Nesbitt’s number to possibly the smallest dude on the team.
I think it will be interesting to see how both of the flagship schools’ 3-4 defenses fare in years two. I don’t know that either could possibly have been worse last year…

Sims is the perfect example (and I would assume he has the attributes to be a team leader) for the rest of the players on the team. Players low on the depth chart realize hard work, determination, commitment and a positive attitude can & will make a difference! Players penciled in as starters realize they must continue to produce and work hard or they might lose their starting slot to someone more determined/committed than them! This kind of player can improve the entire team; leading by example. We all know motivation is a huge part of being successful in sports (and life).
I really like your approach to improve the blog entries……..I have been trying VERY hard to simply ignore the waste-of-my-time blogs for several months!

ESPN is carrying a lot of games that are on ESPN3 and the cable/satellite outlets. Some are exclusive to ESPN3; others are not. Some games are obviously of national interest, and some not so much. ESPN3 is a good way to follow a team while traveling out of the region (so is SlingBox, I’m told.)
Last year the reception via my old Gateway laptop was a bit sluggish, and so was Utube. The video would freeze occasionally. The laptop I’m using now has a much faster CPU and video processor. I watched several episodes of “Friday Night Lights” and other TV show past episodes full screen with nary a burp in playback. I don’t have an HDMI port on this machine, otherwise I’d connect it to the Sony TV in the den.
Of course, your mileage may vary. One of those new IPads might put this setup to shame.

First of all I will say this….. I really like this coach… This interview is just one reason of many that this coach may not be suited for a Head Coach…. Especially in D1, where the head coaches are typically PR guys, and guys that oversee or delegate authority… Yes, there are exceptions, but this is NOT Navy or GSU, where you feel that you have to call all the plays, and not have coordinators that are paid to do this job… His comments are perfect examples of how he is still learning on the job, at the expense of or football program….

Maybe I’m wrong, though. This Dell machine is a 2 year-old hand-me-down for an upgraded Lenovo Thinkpad for my wife. I spec’ed that one out very well. It has not only HDMI, but also eSata, which is a *vast* improvement in speed over USB 2.0 when transferring files to a connected backup drive. The CPU and video specs are much better as well. i don’t know that the head coach calling the plays is evidence that he’s not suited for the job. if he’s the best playcaller on the staff, i think it would make sense for him to do that. i suppose you could argue that as head coach he should be developing his assistants to take on responsibilities like that, and that being the playcaller means he can’t devote more attention to other matters.

Super,,
Johnson said he doesn’t hand over playcalling to an assistant because first, he’d end up second-guessing that coach and if he’s going to second guess anyone, he should just do it himself.
As a head coach, I already know that.
The above statements don’t give you any reason to question his abilities…. I guess I am just ultra sensitive…. BTW, Mark Richt’s offense has done quite well statistically, surely you don’t lay all the problems they have had with Bobo….?

My read on Vad Lee playing is tied to how well Tevin Washington plays. I think Lee impressed Johnson, but I think Johnson would much rather have a 5th year SR Vad Lee if he can get a good season out of Washington. But playing QB in the option is dangerous. If Washington gets knocked out of a game I would expect Lee’s redshirt to get burnt, simply because if Days is starting Johnson won’t want Lee’s first game action to come unexpectedly (i.e. if Days gets hurt too). He’d want to get him some planned snaps to get the butterflies out.

Bobo started calling plays in 2006-the Tech game and then the VT Bowl Game
2007 was not exactly a downhill slide. 2008 wasn’t bad either. 19 season ending injuries. Hung 52 on LSU in Baton Rouge
Defense is and always will be the issue with us as to whether we are good. Drop the PPG from 22 last year to 15 or 16 this year and we go at least 10-2.

One more thing for you “brainiacs” to ponder.
Anyone thought about how the end of a tight game is going to change this year?
Down 23-21 with under a minute to go and in FG range, you used to run the clock down to 4 seconds, kick the FG and go home. Now with the rule change, I think you will see teams leave 14 or 15 seconds on the clock because if you get a penalty, it is a 10 second runoff(the Derek dooley rule).

This year, there is a rule that would run 10 seconds off the clock for the penalty. It would have been game over.

Lex – I was on the NCAA blog website the other day, and the Colorado St. compliance guy who handles the blog listed all rules new to 2011, plus the ones they are still considering for the future. An interesting thing about that 10 second/penalty rule is that if a penalty occurs with 10 seconds or less on the clock, the game is over (even if the clock didn’t run out.)

The taunting rule takes points off the board. The rule i am talking about is for a normal penalty during live play that would result in a 10 second runoff. In an example of trying to kick a winning FG with no timeouts left(and its 4th down), you are running your FG team on and there are less than 10 seconds left. You get a penalty for too many men on the field or illegal procedure and its game over.
At least that is my interpretation
I will have to get someone to read it to me since I went to Georgia

Super,
My understanding is that it will be a judgement call, to be massacred at will. I think it’s asinine, but whatever…. They had better know about the rule, as well as the players that want to jump around on the field after a big play… Just take it to the sideline and NO penalty… Simple as that…

Not too many years ago the AP final poll did not include the bowl game results. Thinking back on that, it makes some sense, although I can’t recall exactly why they did it that way. The bowl games were a bonus, and half of Division 1 was not playing in bowls…I remember the irate Furman Bisher column when the 18th bowl game was established.
Here is my attempt at some logic: When a team finishes the regular season on the last weekend in November, it can be as much as 5 weeks before the bowl game is played. That is almost half of a regular season away. It probably explains why some teams don’t play the bowl game like they played all season.

Please notice how all the teams, with the exception of Colorado, that you claim we ’stole’ the titles from are from the bigger, more glamorous schools…even now, Tech gets little love from the national media. Just because those schools were the most popular doesn’t make them the best teams. Go back and look at the schedules played by both teams…our claims are legit. The head coach of Nebraska, Tom Osborne stated that, having played both GT and UC…Tech was the best team they played in 1990. I DO think that any of these arguments are full of holes when you think about the fact that college football is the only major sport that doesn’t institute a playoff…until this happens…it’s a poop shoot!

Your co workers for the other team with blogs ban negative anti-team posters. Or maybe you enjoy seeing the stuff??? You can ban me if you like, as I will continue to post this comment every time my week ban is over until you change the rule. I will also encourage my Tech friends to boycott your posts until a change is made. It does disappoint me as to up to this point I thought you had done a very fine job covering the team. Ken, I think your heart is in the right place in trying to get this act cleaned up; I’m not an attorney, but I think you’re on somewhat shaky ground W/R/T the First Amendment.
I think you have every right (and good reason) to remove obscene, racially inflammatory or intentionally libelous remarks, but beyond that, you might be on rather thin ice.
I think the better approach, if you’re going to go beyond that, is to remove the offending original posts, regardless of source or poster.
These blogs have shown historically that the “let’s just ignore them” strategy just does not work.

KC – my rationale probably isn’t airtight, but basically, i don’t want to ban non-tech fans who come on the blog trying to bait tech fans because i don’t feel like it’s my place.
however, if the tech fans are sincerely interested in having dialogue about the team and not trading trash talk, i feel more comfortable “helping” those fans who fall into the trap.
i realize this probably isn’t entirely logical. basically, i feel like if you have a gopher problem, the best way to get rid of them isn’t to set gopher traps, it’s to get rid of whatever is attracting the gophers in the first place. any gopher hunters on the blog are welcome to dispute me. i confess my experience with gopher hunting is limited to the work of carl spackler.

Not disappointed, while I love sipping beer and solving the world’s and the NCAA’s problems with my buds and bros on a pretty Autumn afternoon before and after a great game, it is after all the game that makes it a great day or not. Fixing postgame traffic to help folks get off campus is the only improvement that would be meaningful…and that is why we don’t even park on campus anymore. Now, if we want to make a quick exit, we’re on the connector 10 minutes after singing the “Ramblin Wreck” with the team. If we still parked on campus, it would still be closer to an hour…. The point most Tech fans are making Ken is this. I’m fine and most fans are with the usual post her post there common ” high school offense”, “your team is crap” etc stuff. What is the problem for example is on this thread there is approx. 270 comments and over 45 are from one person with absolutely nothing to contribute to the ACTUAL story post.

Any further word on Roddy Jones and his injury? I hope he really is just “dinged up” but it’s a little odd to hold him out of the first game of the year for that. I’d give him the start at least…unless he’s really injured.

Ken-I appreciate the response. I will respectfully disagree. I think it is safe to say that a ban from the GT blog would only be seen as a bad thing to a true gt fan. Keep that in mind with your “logic” on how to police the site. I just need to train myself to read your blog and ignore the comments. It is really hard to do.

Full, haven’t heard anything more on him. Maybe its like a strained hammy or something. Some kind of minor injury that it just isn’t worth the risk of making worse against Western Carolina. My thinking is that if it where Clemson, or Vt he would be playing.

Ken- I also agree with other posters in regard to banning the baiting posts. Why ban Tech fans (e.g. the people that defend Tech) from their own blog? I agree that it’s a bad idea to feed the trolls, but there wouldn’t be trolls to feed if you’d ban their crap at the outset. Your logic seems pretty backwards to me, though I do appreciate any effort to clean up these forums. Trash talkers from both teams do nothing but hijack and degrade the quality of all the blogs on AJC.com.

Ken, there is a big difference between harmless back-and-forth kidding around and even occasional trashing your rival. But when ONE person comes on these blogs and for what is now more than 3 hours has attempted to hijack the blog and done nothing but call names, criticize, antagonize, provoke, and purposely offend people, including one of his own, then one has to ask why is he even here at all? Well, the answer pure and simple is that he is here ONLY to do the things he has done. Some of the trolls on here get me PO’d at times; some make me laugh; but only a few have offended me, and this guy is one of them. I am sure whoever runs the UGA blogs would NEVER tolerate this kind of activity from a Tech troll. So why do you tolerate this?

GTFan478, same here. I am in Augusta, and there is a dearth of information here about Tech. So this is my only source. I have heard the HIVE is good on RamblinWreck.com, but in the past when I have checked it out it just proved boring. Like I said, I sometimes enjoy the back-and-forth between rivals, so I can tolerate most of the crap that gets posted on here. But when some resort to blatantly offensive behavior, then something needs to be done.

Too bad we all spend more time talking about each other rather than talking and learning and sharing about the Jackets. I guess that’s just the nature of the blog beast. CapnED, I have also wondered about special teams since we certainly have room for improvement. I’m sure Orwin will handle kickoff returns and also sure he’ll make some good ones. You have to hope that IF CPJ really did do some micromanaging on special teams that they would be better. No team is good enough to let special teams play slide, especially one with so much to prove this year. Offensive turnovers, defensive breakdowns on big plays, and bad special teams play just suck the life and enthusiasm out of a game, a home crowd, a team, and ultimately, a season.

On another note what the hell is up with the U so-called punishment? How is it considred cooperation when you are outed with damning evidence after covering it up for 8 years? AJ Green had to sit out four games while waiting a bit for the NCAA to rule, Ohio players were to be out a mandatory five, GT gets $100,000 fine and title stripped for an investigation that never actually proved any wrongdoing, and UNC is still waiting. Once again Tech fans think they are special and immune from trash talking and once again the AJC is babying their sensitive little psyche. This is simply pathetic. Tech fans don’t have to deal with any more “trolling” or “haters” than any other team in college football. If anything, you deal with it less because your program is irrelevant and hardly anyone cares enough to talk trash to you. No fan base on earth cries like little girls as much as Tech fans when it comes to trash talking. Get over yourselves. Its all in good fun. I drive through the Tech campus on a near daily basis and so far I have been 100% successful in resisting the urge to run down a couple of you nerds. Kidding!!! Good grief lighten the hell up.

Ken your an IDIOT. You should ban those on either side that starts trash talk. That way there would be no response. Chip Towers banned me for responding to a georgie trash talker about females at Tech. Since I have a daughter that graduated and one that will in Dec. and can hold their on looks wise with anything at georgie I let the guy have it. What got me banned was using some of the same words he used. I got banned he didn’t. I finally got Chip’s email and I let him have it for being a georgie homer. Now you want to do the same thing. Ban Tech responders but not georgie trash talkers. So in my eyes your nothing more than a georgie homer and I will let the AJC know you should be fired as you are totally biased. You are always saying you left something out, didn’t have time for this or that or you will commit on something at a later date. What else do you do that you don’t have time. Do you have another job that keeps you so busy. You want have to worry about banning me as this will be my last response to anything you have to say if I find the time to read it. Why don’t you go back to georgie or where ever it was you went to school and got your so called degree. If you really did. That is where you belong.
