Greetings-
Some quick notes from coach Paul Johnson’s Monday news conference in advance of Georgia Tech’s season opener Thursday against Western Carolina.
1. Johnson said A-back Roddy Jones is doubtful (undisclosed injury). Jones has appeared and started in all but one game in his Georgia Tech career. Johnson said he was “dinged up.” Embry Peeples would start in Jones’ place. Backup A-back Marcus Wright is also on the injured list.
2. B-back David Sims will start. The depth chart lists Preston Lyons and Charles Perkins as No. 2. After saying last week that Perkins was not working hard enough in practice, he and Johnson met. “I think we’re on the same page,” Johnson said.
3. True freshman guard Trey Braun will not start, after all. Coaches considered different combinations, but decided to keep Will Jackson at guard and make Braun the No. 3 guard. Either Catlin Alford or Ray Beno will start at left tackle in place of Phil Smith, who is suspended for two games. Braun will play, as will fellow true freshman Shaq Mason. Coaches had tried Jackson at left tackle with Braun at left guard. The Beno/Alford decision likely won’t be made until Tuesday. Johnson said the team will use several different combinations Thursday.
4. Wide receiver Tyler Melton will start. True freshman Jeff Greene will be the No. 3 and will play. Johnson indicated Melton’s senior standing was a factor in the decision.
5. Johnson said of the 64 players going to the team hotel Wednesday night, about 20 are either true or redshirt freshmen.
6. True freshman Zach Laskey will return punts. Johnson said he caught the ball naturally, which was the first priority, and has shown some ability as a returner. He’ll also play on other special teams units.
7. Justin Moore has won the placekicking and kickoff jobs over David Scully. Sean Poole will punt, with Chandler Anderson backing him up.

hate it for Roddy that he may not play. congrats to Sims again for his hard work paying off with the starting BB job. looking forward to seeing Zenon on the field. looking forward to seeing Drummond at LB in his first game on the Flats. suprised a little with Hill being a kick returner. i thought maybe Zenon would be opposite of Smith. can’t wait to be there Thurs night for the opener. gonna be a fun season IMO.

I think we have a really solid top 44 players.
My lone worry is if Tevin W. can make a play at the end of the game when needed, or will he be a “deer in the headlights” ?
That’s why I think Vad Lee should get early PT. If he is a playmaker, then he can get us over the hump in those close games at the end (barring any freshman mistakes…)

A Yech thug murdered a mother of 4. Is anyone shocked? Just a year after FBI drug Lord Houston held his gf at gunpoint. Yech trash and their “student” athletes at their finest.
I suspect if they get a search warrant and looked through the rooms of all their “student” athletes they could solve their weekly on campus muggings as well.
How much shame and embarrassment will this cesspool of an institute bring to this state?

Or the former UGA QB who plead guilty of sexual battery? Or the countless number of arrests of players for DUI, hit and run, etc, etc. Or the staff members at UGA who bilked students there for hundreds of dollars each? Or the former UGA AD caught in an adulterous act with a hooker? Or the former basketball coach who rigged tests so that his player might have a chance of passing? Shall I go on? There are plenty of other law-breakers from UGA I could mention; I have barely scratched the surface.

It just irks me that the only manner I’ll be able to catch this Thursday night game is on the internet. Living in Southwestern Georgia, our am. Radio station can’t get the signal out of their parking lot after 7:00 pm and no fm station in our area will be carrying this game. I still can’t understand our scheduling this game on a Thursday night when the only time any school should do that is when there is TV money at stake. A Thursday night game with no TV coverage isn’t very good scheduling if you ask me. Forget driving from this part of the state and then having to drive back the same night when Friday is a work day and an early one to boot! Just doesn’t make any sense…………………………………..

A murderer is a murderer no matter whether he is a FORMER student or an CURRENT professor. And a FORMER student who murders someone IS much worse than a CURRENT student who has DUI’s, BUT no school has any control over what a FORMER student does. THUGa, however, SHOULD have control over what their CURRENT students do. And don’t kid yourself if you think that habitual misdemeanors won’t eventually lead to something much worse. This was not Crittenton’s first “mistake”, and the habitual misdemeanors by mutts will probably not be their last “mistakes” nor their worst ones. God help all of them, whether it be Crittenton of Mettenberger (remember him), or whoever.

It’s hard to schedule good OOC games when it’s a lose lose situation to play you. Our OOC record is horrendous so when we play a good team, they’ll look horrible if they lose to us and no one will care if they beat us. With the BCS being what it is, we bring down their SOS. We need to have several years in a row where we are relevant in the top 25, and winning bowl games especially, until people will take the risk of playing us.

Truth, actually I was NOT comparing Mettenberger to Crittenton, but Mettenberger WAS a student in Athens when that happened; Crittenton hasn’t been on the Tech campus in 5 years, and then only for 9 months. Mark, I am with you on all the picks except the UGA game. No way Tech loses that one this year. Grantham has no idea how to defend the TO, and Tech’s D will be at least good enough to slow the dawgs down. Time of possession will win the game for the Jackets. Also, no way UGA wins the SEC east. /i>
Care for a friendly wager?
You guys are unbelievable. You’ll be lucky to win 6 games. You beat UGA once a decade and you think you will win this year?
Grantham has no idea how to defend the TO, and Tech’s D will be at least good enough to slow the dawgs down.
How do you know he has no idea? It really isnt that complicated.
I mean he is an NFL coach so he will have to prepare for something different when going against a pop warner offense but I doubt if he is losing sleep over it.
And if UGA gets ahead ( which they most likely will ) forget it. CPJ offense cant come from behind.

Naters, I have not made a single excuse about anything. I just want to know why a murder in Athens is less significant than one in Atlanta? You got an answer for that?
And i stated there isn’t.
only difference is you guys will make a huge deal out of one and snicker ( UGA one )
The other one you will conveniently push to the back of your mind. ( Tech one )

Headley, you know as well as anybody (even if you won’t admit it publicly) that the Tech probation is a total sham. Nobody has even been accused of cheating or lying or breaking any rules; it’s all about somebody at the NCAA getting their feelings hurt. And yes, there haven’t been as many problems at THUGa…….at least not as many this year as last year. But there HAVE been more problems in Athens this year with CURRENT students than there have been this year at Tech with CURRENT students.

And I have not noticed a single person in here pushing Crittenton’s troubles to the back of our mind or in any way making light of or attempting to justify them. It’s obvious he is in BIG TIME TROUBLE. But there’s no way his ever having been at Tech has anything to do with it. All that we are are brushing aside is the claims by you and others that his previous (and temporary) school affiliation has anything whatsoever to do with anything.

Would you like banners hanging from the school asking for thier heads? Where you even around when Houston got busted? I was and nobody had his back and his team wanted nothing to do with him. When Matt Skole got busted for a DUI no fan ignored it we said he made a stupid mistake and was lucky it was not worse. The only time myself or others defended him is when some UGA fans strted saying he was wasted on Meth and other stupid crap. You just want to spin things and derail blogs because you have either some strange obsession with GT or just because you are an ignorant blogger with nothing better to do.

Naters, NO Tech player accepted ANY illegal benefits. Both the ACC AND the NCAA cleared him to play prior to the game, but somebody at the NCAA didn’t like it because DRAD had told CPJ what was going on prior to that exoneration. The NCAA wanted Tech to bench him and then unbench him without anybody ever telling the coach or the player what was happening. Read the FACTS, bubba, and quit making crap up.

headley, the fact that THUGa won last year doesn’t say a thing about Grantham’s defense. You know damn well the game was lost on unforced turnovers (i.e., stupid mistakes) and an ineffective Tech defense, although Tech’s defense didn’t perform as bad as Tech’s offense or THUGa’s defense.

Embry Peoples used to share kicks with Orwin Smith. David Simms will break 1000 yards – easily. Bostic’s injury has potential to turn into a medical red-shirt. I like all of our 2 deep LBs. Hope to see all three QBs get some snaps and let their play determine who remains the no. 1. If Synjyn falls to no. 3, given how good he is as a runner I’d like to see him play a little A-back. Imagine — Washington, Simms and Synjyn on the field at once — could make for some interesting playcalling…

Panama – good to hear from you. he said 64 will go to the hotel, which i’m told is standard procedure. it doesn’t mean that’s who will dress or play. everyone on the roster not injured, possibly except those who are definitely being redshirted, should dress and would be available to play.
There were no questions about Lee (rather remarkably), and Johnson didn’t bring him up. He’s third on the depth chart, I’m sure, but Johnson hasn’t said anything about his plans yet.
As for Hill and kick returns, Roddy Jones, Embry Peeples and Tony Zenon were among candidates early on.

Machen is probably more like the No. 4 linebacker. If either Daniel Drummond or Julian Burnett got hurt, I’d think Quayshawn Nealy will go in. Johnson made a point of saying that just because a player is listed as No. 2 doesn’t mean he’s the guy that would go in if the player ahead of him got hurt.

I’d say it’s pretty common. Like the guards, for instance. Shaquille Mason is listed as the backup to Will Jackson, but Braun has been acknowledged as the No. 3 guard, so if Jackson were to get hurt, Braun would get in, but i guess the format of the standard depth chart is such that you wouldn’t list Braun twice.

The difference is when someone leaves their college or university and then does something stupid or criminal. Much different than doing it under the supervision of the coaching staff and university rules. No one blamed UGA when Hines Ward was stopped for DUI. I see depth chart and disagree with Washington as QB b/c of Spring T-day Game. Here is a game called “day”, which used to be the T-night game in early 70’s, and SynJyn “SlimJim” Days outplayed Washington. Therefore SlimJim is not a beef jerk. Last year Washington supplied only filler material at the cube position. The position should be “Days Inn” for the Fall- Days In, and Tevin Washington out. Besides, Washington is short like Tommy Suggs was for SC, and would have problems passing over OL. If not Days, Vad Lee would start as Freshman while we have him and the pros do not. CPJ wants Washington to start just b/c of Washington coming from small town in ‘Bama maybe near GS.

When Nez grew his hair longer, his passing vanished. His first year was passing to Thomas alot. Then he grew his hair out and couldn’t pass it in the ocean. So there is some sort of correlation with short hair worn by QB’s and passing ability. Washington has longer hair than Synjyn, and Synjyn outplayed him in the T-day game. Eddie McAshan had short hair as the cube for Tech in the ‘71-’72 seasons. Long hair was not allowed by Coach Carson. Rice came into town and beat Tech, and their players were allowed long hair and moustaches. But Tech cubes play better with short hair. Now that of course did not hold true for Anthony Allen. Then again, he was a standard fullback that did not mature until he was a Senior, a standard progression. Nez was a star his first year. For his next two years he had the passing yips, like a golf player has when he gets nervous about putting and misses putts. Anybody who thinks going to a Tech game is a mandatory requirement for a Tech grad is feeble minded. I Tech grad and watch ALL the games on tv from a recluse location. It’ll still be the real game, don’t worry about that. I recall watching the Gator Bowl in ‘65 on tv, when Larry Smith ran it up the middle against Bobby Dodd’s team for a touchdown.
