Greetings-
Some quick notes from coach Paul Johnson’s Monday news conference in advance of Georgia Tech’s season opener Thursday against Western Carolina.
1. Johnson said A-back Roddy Jones is doubtful (undisclosed injury). Jones has appeared and started in all but one game in his Georgia Tech career. Johnson said he was “dinged up.” Embry Peeples would start in Jones’ place. Backup A-back Marcus Wright is also on the injured list.
2. B-back David Sims will start. The depth chart lists Preston Lyons and Charles Perkins as No. 2. After saying last week that Perkins was not working hard enough in practice, he and Johnson met. “I think we’re on the same page,” Johnson said.
3. True freshman guard Trey Braun will not start, after all. Coaches considered different combinations, but decided to keep Will Jackson at guard and make Braun the No. 3 guard. Either Catlin Alford or Ray Beno will start at left tackle in place of Phil Smith, who is suspended for two games. Braun will play, as will fellow true freshman Shaq Mason. Coaches had tried Jackson at left tackle with Braun at left guard. The Beno/Alford decision likely won’t be made until Tuesday. Johnson said the team will use several different combinations Thursday.
4. Wide receiver Tyler Melton will start. True freshman Jeff Greene will be the No. 3 and will play. Johnson indicated Melton’s senior standing was a factor in the decision.
5. Johnson said of the 64 players going to the team hotel Wednesday night, about 20 are either true or redshirt freshmen.
6. True freshman Zach Laskey will return punts. Johnson said he caught the ball naturally, which was the first priority, and has shown some ability as a returner. He’ll also play on other special teams units.
7. Justin Moore has won the placekicking and kickoff jobs over David Scully. Sean Poole will punt, with Chandler Anderson backing him up.

Stumpknocker, isn’t that typical of those trolls to deny published facts with nothing to substantiate his denial, and then blast us for referring to those facts.

Because a player who is long since removed from the program represents GT? He more represents the Wizards if anything, not GT.

No worries about injuries and depth for this one guys. Your scout team should be able to beat Western Carolina.
Knock em around – I’m hoping you are undefeated when we face off in November – It will make our annual win more rewarding

I see depth chart and disagree with Washington as QB b/c of Spring T-day Game. Here is a game called “day”, which used to be the T-night game in early 70’s, and SynJyn “SlimJim” Days outplayed Washington. Therefore SlimJim is not a beef jerk. Last year Washington supplied only filler material at the cube position. The position should be “Days Inn” for the Fall- Days In, and Tevin Washington out. Besides, Washington is short like Tommy Suggs was for SC, and would have problems passing over OL. If not Days, Vad Lee would start as Freshman while we have him and the pros do not. CPJ wants Washington to start just b/c of Washington coming from small town in ‘Bama maybe near GS.

Listen, how many of you Tech grads like me are planning on not writing up a computer program to watch Tech play Thursday night on ESPN3, rambling reclusively, if Tevin Washington starts? How many of you will ramble reclusively until sometime in the Fall, missing some ESPN3 and tv games b/c of Washington starting, and turn on a Tech game in progress and hope to see Days or Lee starting?

How many of you Tech grads believe that Tevin Washington needs a haircut as short as Synjyn Days’ haircut? How many of you believed that Nesbitt’s short haircut in his first year was how he should have appeared for the next two years?

how many TRUE Tech fans give a damn how long his hair is? And how many TRUE Tech fans would not watch a game just because of one player? I don’t stay home and watch games on TV or ESPN3; I go to the games. If you’re within driving distance, you should too. Support your team and get over trivial crap like you posted.

@Rodney Dangerfield … EXACTLY!!! The AJC needs to switch its blog format to a login procedure for comments, where everyone has ONE user name and password … with comments moderated before posting … so that the retards can be sorted out and banned accordingly.
So many people come on here and call GT a joke (although I suspect its just a handful of people posting under multiple names) … the REAL joke is having to sort through this trash and diarrhea of the mouth from these bozos on a daily basis.
So just ignore them you say? A sound strategy, but we are way past that point … for years now the GT blogs have been a wasteland of comments filled with nothing but pure hatred coming from anyone BUT true GT fans.
Ken and AJC: please take the suggestion under immediate consideration. Thanks.

When Nez grew his hair longer, his passing vanished. His first year was passing to Thomas alot. Then he grew his hair out and couldn’t pass it in the ocean. So there is some sort of correlation with short hair worn by QB’s and passing ability. Washington has longer hair than Synjyn, and Synjyn outplayed him in the T-day game. Eddie McAshan had short hair as the cube for Tech in the ‘71-’72 seasons. Long hair was not allowed by Coach Carson. Rice came into town and beat Tech, and their players were allowed long hair and moustaches. But Tech cubes play better with short hair. Now that of course did not hold true for Anthony Allen. Then again, he was a standard fullback that did not mature until he was a Senior, a standard progression. Nez was a star his first year. For his next two years he had the passing yips, like a golf player has when he gets nervous about putting and misses putts. Anybody who thinks going to a Tech game is a mandatory requirement for a Tech grad is feeble minded. I Tech grad and watch ALL the games on tv from a recluse location. It’ll still be the real game, don’t worry about that. I recall watching the Gator Bowl in ‘65 on tv, when Larry Smith ran it up the middle against Bobby Dodd’s team for a touchdown.
