From the scrimmage: Washington, Cross, Days
Greetings-
Preseason camp is finished and we’re less than two weeks from the first game of the season. Not much doing, but I had some leftover stuff from the scrimmage that didn’t make it into the notes.
1. Quarterback Tevin Washington made one of the highlight plays from Saturday morning, faking an option pitch to A-back Embry Peeples to create an open lane and score on a 36-yard touchdown run. To me, it shows a comfort with the option and that perhaps the speed of the game is slowing down for him.
Washington used an option term I was unaware of: “slow playing.” It refers to a linebacker assigned to the quarterback who overplays the pitch. In such a situation, a fake pitch is an ideal move. Washington said the defense had been slow playing the offense a lot.
“They’re trying to really play the pitch, but they’re trying to string it out, (and) give the inside linebacker time to run and make the play,” Washington said.
(A-back Tony Zenon used another term: “Pitch relationship,” meaning the proper distance and angle between quarterback and A-back on an option play.)
Washington’s most improved defensive players of fall camp: Safety Jemea Thomas, cornerback Louis Young, inside linebacker Daniel Drummond and defensive tackle Logan Walls. (More on Walls in a minute)
2. Defensive end Izaan Cross had a productive day, with one forced fumbles and other disruptive plays. He said he has been focused on playing each snap with effort. You might remember that he came into camp lighter than last season and was one of the team’s best-conditioned players.
“I struggled in [consistent effort] last year,” he said. “I’d do three or four good ones and then you wouldn’t see me for another quarter.”
Also, Cross said backup end Euclid Cummings has progressed “tremendously” and that end Emmanuel Dieke and tackle T.J. Barnes are getting better. I may have mentioned it before, but I think defensive line depth is one of the more important factors of the season.
“We’re definitely going to need them all to contribute,” he said.
I asked Cross who was the defensive line MVP of camp and he demurred, but acknowledged that “Logan’s our warrior in the middle” and the group’s leader.
Walls is a guy that likely won’t make a lot of tackles, but if he’s playing well, it’ll free up linebackers to get to the ball. I imagine if coaches made a list of players they’d least like to lose to injury – somehow I’m guessing such a list doesn’t exist – he’d be close to the top.
An interesting observation from Cross about the offense:
“They’re just clicking a little bit more, have more chemistry. I feel like Tevin’s a lot more comfortable in what he’s doing.”
3. Backup quarterback Synjyn Days ran well with the ball. His running, a lot of it on quarterback draws, fueled his only touchdown drive of the day. He had a few fumbles, though, some on center-quarterback exchanges, which has been his downfall in the past. In response to a question about where he needs to improve, he replied, “Ball control, just keeping control of the ball,” he said.
To his credit, he accepted all of the responsibility for fumbling the exchanges.
“We should know each other by now,” he said, “and that’s on me, me, me alone, really.”

Headley…..entertain all of us GT fans with your wisdom & reliance on the AP……where did the AP have Auburn ranked last season? Oh, and while you’re at it, tell us where the Dawgs were ranked as well.
How’d the AP 2010 pre-season “opinion” (aka poll) work out for just those two?
Oh, and your good friend “Vegas” that you put so much stock into ….. What were the 2010 over/under win totals for GT & UGA? I’m “betting” Mr. Vegas had both higher than 6.
You can always take the exceptions and try to make them the rule.
But that’s what they are, exceptions.

Those were some pretty BIG exceptions. I don’t keep up with Vegas since I don’t gamble, but seems to me like the exceptions may actually BE the rule.

supderDawg, I think most of the Tech bloggers hate THUGa and always will, but I doubt you see any of the regular Tech posters posting drivel on the mutt blogs. Yes, I know there are some Tech trolls who are no better than you, but I doubt you see any of us regulars posting on your blogs. Sounds like you’re just an immature child.

Sims vs Perkins vs Lyons: After watching both scrimmages, it seems that Perkins has straight ahead power, breakaway speed but not the best vision for holes or lateral quicks. Lyons has the vision for holes, a good side step for short to medium gains. But Sims has the vision, the side step, can run over you or run by you. I think all three are capable but Sims is the best all around, incl receiving the short passes. Tevin seemed to have won the QB job due to his consistency, rather than long-term potential. If he doesn’t lead us to score 30+ per game over the first 3 weeks, we’re in for a long season…

Not too crazy about them. I’m a traditional guy. Give me the red helmets, red jersey and silver pants.
The players love them though. Every player I talked to was excited about wearing them and plus it is just one game.

Although I am obviously not a Georgia fan, I agree with you; I liked the uniforms they wore in the 60s. I think these make the players look like fire hydrants, which is of course appropriate for the dawgs….LOL. They also look like space rangers; I think they are hideous.

311GTFan – DawginLex’s cool, he’s big time UGA fan but like most of us loves all collage football talk even when it regards rivals.
If Washington does good this year, it may be 3rd year before we see LeMay verse Lee Matchup, Both Murry and Washington will be back next year. If we don’t see Lee this year that mean Washington will be ok, and will start next year to.

While the snap issues are disappointing, I like that Days takes full responsibility. There seems to be a much greater sense of accountability around this year’s team. That is encouraging.

So it appears we redshirt Lee in 2011, he’s the backup in 12′, and we unleash him as a RS sophmore in 13′(maybe 12′ if Tevin is injured at some point). I like it.CPJ will be two deep at all positions with HIS recruits at that point. Should be fun!

I’m guessing that as or right now, they’re gonna try to RS Lee (and that’s what I’d try to do), BUT remember that it can be pulled at any time. So if TW &/or Days goes down he could then play or if we really struggle he could.
I would give him some reps in practice & not just run the scout team.

RamboDog thinks we’ll have a defense that gets us under 20 points per game. Glad to hear it!
@BigTimeTechFan I don’t know if it WILL happen but don’t be surprised if we have either Hunt-Days or Mcnair as a backup ILB instead of Machen. Also, don’t be surprised of Menocal is a backup OLB instead of Munroe.
Also, it appears will be a lot of TFr playing this year through special teams. It looks like CPJ is doing everything he can to make special teams a point of emphasis.

You guys play in the ACC, why wouldn’t you have an ability to keep most teams under 20 points? Of course, we will put 40+ on you, but that’s just one game.
