Greetings-
A few quick observations from Saturday’s scrimmage.
1. Passing game looked good again, after a solid showing last Saturday. A lot of short throws to the A-backs flaring out. Tevin Washington was pretty accurate and the quarterbacks got time to throw from the line.
Paul Johnson: “I thought Tevin threw the ball fairly well again.”
2. Run defense was fairly strong. The B-backs didn’t produce much, nor did the A-backs. Quarterback runs and draws were effective. Washington scored on a 36-yard run in which he faked the pitch to Embry Peeples and had a clear lane to the end zone.
3. Defense controlled the scrimmage early, not allowing a score for the first six possessions, starting at the opposing 30-yard line. Offense scored on three consecutive series (led by Synjyn Days, Vad Lee and Washington), then defense held on the last five. All stats unofficial.
4. Inside linebacker Quayshawn Nealy played with the first string in place of Julian Burnett, who was rested with some bumps and bruises. He made several plays and showed good quickness.
5. True freshman wide receivers Jeff Greene and Darren Waller got a lot of time with the first string. Stephen Hill played early but not much after. I don’t believe Tyler Melton practiced. Greene caught a fade-type pass from Lee for a 17-yard gain.
Johnson: “Jeff’s played pretty well in camp. I think he’s played himself into a position where he’s certainly going to play.”
6. Defensive end Izaan Cross had a productive morning, including a forced fumble on a mesh between Days and Preston Lyons. “On that one play, I just wanted to get off the field,” Cross said. “I just did whatever I could to do that.”
7. True freshman guard Trey Braun started at left guard in place of Will Jackson, out with an injury. I couldn’t tell much, but it seemed like he held his own.
8. A-back B.J. Bostic is out for about four weeks. Johnson wouldn’t specify the injury, but his right arm was in a sling. Johnson said redshirting him (he played last year as a true freshman) is a possibility.
9. Guard Errin Joe and Lyons both hobbled off the field with injuries, but Johnson said he didn’t think either injury was serious.
10. To me, no B-back stood out. I’ll have to add up the stats.
11. More fumbles, errant pitches and botched center-quarterback exchanges. Johnson did not sound concerned, attributing it to different combinations at the two positions.
12. Saturday was Johnson’s birthday. The team sang to him after the scrimmage.

Wait a minute “macro”…. According to our fellow GT Fan “stinger 2″, we should all be worried about WCU.
We also have GDBurdell, Gorilla Biscuit, WnE, and a slew of other UGA fans (who follow & know more about GT football than us TRUE GT Fans) telling us how the Jackets will be fortunate in any Ws they get in 2011.
But back to your post…….I’m seeing lots of similarities to the 2008 season. Nobody’s paying much attention to the Jackets, and the first 7 games certainly don’t have me shakin in my boots.

I would be worried about em all.
When Vegas says you are only gonna win 6 and you don’t even receive a vote for the AP Top 25 id say every game should be taken seriously.
Especially the ones you have a legit shot at winning.

Macro…
2008 first 7:
Jax St – remember all the UGA fans telling us how JSU was going to kill GT b/c they had a former SEC QB (Perilloux)
@ BC – Eagles had a very good D, and a NFL D-line
@VT – GT was better than the Hokies in all phases except points for & against
Miss St
Duke
Gardner Webb (played that game with a QB, Calv Booker, who had NO business running PJ’s O)
@ Clemson – nice W in DV, but laid the egg vs UVA the next week
2011 first 7:
WCU (we here ya UGA fans, yes we GT fans are worried)
@ MTSU
KU
UNC
@ NCST
UMary
@ UVA
Again, other than WCU (b/c so many UGA fans know something we don’t), none of the first 7 have me extemely worried.

He thinks GT will only win 6 games (if they are lucky) b/c some guy named “Vegas” says that’s all they will win. Yet he thinks his Dawgs will go 9-3 or 10-2 DESPITE that “Vegas” guy only saying they’ll win 8.

Final 5 in 2008:
UVA
FSU
@ UNC
Miami
@ UGA
Final 5 in 2011:
@ Miami
Clemson
VT
@ Duke
UGA
Everyone was new to the O in 2008, and we saw how they progressed as season wore on, rushing for 472 & 409 in 2 of those 5, and that was probably vs the 2 most athletic Ds of the final 5. GT went 3-2 in those 5.
2011 has lots of new STARTERS to the O, who have spent a lot more than 1 Spring & 1 Summer camp learning/practicing the O, and just a few “newbies”. One would think the 2011 team will be much further along with the O than the 2008 team. With that in mind can GT finish 3-2 in 2011 over the final 5? Yes. Can the finish 5-0? Yes. Can they finish 0-5? Yes. But, just like the first 7, there’s no team in the final 5 that’s got this GT Fan shakin in his boots.

big difference in talent now than in 2008. thats why you should be worried about losing to teams like western carolina. your guys as a whole are about the same size as their guys. they have a ton of div 1aa talent on their team just like you guys do. just have to see if the talent is better. pretty close i imagine. you guys have no player on your offense that is anywhere close to nesbitt, dwyer, or bey bey. your defense has most of your pro talent on there, which is like 3 or so. you tech fans should really brace yourself this year for a ton of ugly games. think you guys will lead the league in turnovers?

even though you guys rush just about every play i will still be very surprised if your running game puts up the numbers that chan gailys players put up in 2008, 2009. i can already see by the way that techs new guys are fumbling the snap, that you guys will have trouble keeping the ball as long as the 2008 team did.

Who does Vegas say it going to win the NC? Oklahoma? Let’s just give them the crystal football.
There’s no need to waste the money on tickets. No need to go back to campus on a beautiful fall afternoon. No need to sip some nice bourbon, smoke a nice cigar, grill some good food and share some comraderie with college friends and fellow fans. No need to toss the football around or play some corn hole with your buddies.
Cause the trolls and football “experts” know what’s going to happen. Let’s just cancel the season for everybody except Oklahoma and their scheduled opponents. We’ll all save ourselves a bunch of money! It’s only about who wins the NC, right? There’s nothing of value for the other 500 (or whatever the # is) teams and their fans.
Get some perspective, children.

ATL XMAN…another UGA fan who is an expert on GT football.
Let’s see……TOs you asked about. GT was LAST in Div 1 in 2010 with TOs, so YES they could have the most TOs in the league again. Even being last in TOs they somehow managed 6 Ws. UGA on the other hand, had a POSITIVE turnover margin in 2010 yet still only managed…..6 Ws.
Can’t rush for more yds than Gailey’s 2008 & 2009 boys? Gee, A. Allen DID rush for more yds than Dwyer in either 2008 or 2009.
But please keep all of us true GT fans informed on what has happened, what’s most likely to happen, and what will happen. You are sooo informed.

I did some research on WCU over the previous 5 seasons. And based on what I found, I see why so many UGA fans a correct, and GT fans should be worried about WCU.
In the last 5 seasons WCU has played at least 1 team from either the SEC or ACC, going 0-6. But, as you will see below, the mighty mighty UGA Dawgs is who WCU played the best….and that was in UGA’s best season, 2007. Isn’t the reason why UGA appeared to have flopped in 2008 (preseason #1, headley, how’d Vegas get that one wrong?) was b/c the Dawgs were so good in 2007?
WCU since 2006:
2006 – 2-9 …… Lost to UF 62-0
2007 – 1-10 ….. Lost to Bama 52-6, and UGA 45-16 (man rhe SEC is killing us, better try the ACC next year)
2008 – 3-9 ……. Lost to FSU 69-0 (oops, better go back to the SEC next year, but let’s start at the bottom this time)
2009 – 2-9 …… Lost to VANDY 45-0 (how in the heck did WCU score 16 vs the SEC’s best, according to 99% of UGA fans, team in 2007, and score 0 vs its worst????)
2010 – 2-9 …… Lost to NCST 45-6.
I see now why GT fans should be scared. Now, add to that WCU lost 7 starters on D from 2010 (3 DL), a D that gave up 34.5 ppg, and we should all be really scared.
WCU does, however, return 9 starters on O. An O that averaged a whopping 16.5 ppg.
Yep Dawg fans, this GT Fan is scared.

GT Fan, obviously we shouldn’t we be scared, but in the past Tech has taken too many teams too lightly and ended up in a struggle, if not a loss. Let’s not be scared, but let’s be damn sure we don’t just assume it’s going to be an automatic win or cakewalk. I don’t think there’s any chance of them not taking the opening game seriously, but unfortunately, stranger things have happened..

To the UGA fans saying we could lose to WCU you are right any team can lose to any other team any day of the week. If the players come unprepared and the offense fumbles like there is no tomorrow then GT could easily lose. I do not think this will happen as anybody that has been around the team can tell you the players look hungry and ready to prove something, but it could happen. This is similar to UGA they could easily lose the first two and be looking for another HC. As long as a I see progression each week and promise for the future I will be happy.

My bad KB … My bad eyes saw Dwyer with 1295 yds in 2008 (and I knew he had the exact same yds in 2009, although it took him an extra game to do it).
Okay, so AA rushed for 79 fewer yards than Dwyer … And with an OL that was pretty much PJ puny guys accordind to the “experts”. That’s 6.08 yds/gm less in a 13 game season, and 5.64 yds/gm less in Dwyer’s 14 game 2009 season.
According to ATL XMAN GT was way less talented in 2010 than 2008 or 2009, yet AA had pretty much the same stats as his predicessor. Probably ends up with more than JD’s 2009 total had he [AA] had a 14th game.
At this pt in 2011 their is no clear cut #1 BB, so more than likely one single guy will not continue the string of 1300 yd rushers for PJ. But, at season’s end, the total yds out the BB position willl be similar or greater than the 1st three seasons.
You can be worried all you want about GT’s last 11 games, I won’t unless WCU beats the Jackets. But being a UGA fan it seams like you are wasting your time worrying about GT’s games. Thanks…I guess??

After all I have heard over the past year, both on these blogs and from real-life friends who are dawgs, if they start off 0-2, then they will be screaming for Richt’s head. Whether it happens is anybody’s guess, but it appears to me that there are a good many dawgs who are a little more than concerned about the future under Richt.

For Richt to be 23-1 against Tech as either head or assistant coach, Tech would have had to have played FSU or Georgia with him coaching every year since 1986. Tech didn’t renew the series with FSU until 1995, which makes him only 15-1. Still not very good for Tech, but let’s at least get our facts straight, something I know you mutts don’t relate much to.
