Tech scrimmage observations

Greetings-

A few quick observations from Saturday’s scrimmage.

1. Passing game looked good again, after a solid showing last Saturday. A lot of short throws to the A-backs flaring out. Tevin Washington was pretty accurate and the quarterbacks got time to throw from the line.

Paul Johnson: “I thought Tevin threw the ball fairly well again.”

2. Run defense was fairly strong. The B-backs didn’t produce much, nor did the A-backs. Quarterback runs and draws were effective. Washington scored on a 36-yard run in which he faked the pitch to Embry Peeples and had a clear lane to the end zone.

3. Defense controlled the scrimmage early, not allowing a score for the first six possessions, starting at the opposing 30-yard line. Offense scored on three consecutive series (led by Synjyn Days, Vad Lee and Washington), then defense held on the last five. All stats unofficial.

4. Inside linebacker Quayshawn Nealy played with the first string in place of Julian Burnett, who was rested with some bumps and bruises. He made several plays and showed good quickness.

5. True freshman wide receivers Jeff Greene and Darren Waller got a lot of time with the first string. Stephen Hill played early but not much after. I don’t believe Tyler Melton practiced. Greene caught a fade-type pass from Lee for a 17-yard gain.
Johnson: “Jeff’s played pretty well in camp. I think he’s played himself into a position where he’s certainly going to play.”

6. Defensive end Izaan Cross had a productive morning, including a forced fumble on a mesh between Days and Preston Lyons. “On that one play, I just wanted to get off the field,” Cross said. “I just did whatever I could to do that.”

7. True freshman guard Trey Braun started at left guard in place of Will Jackson, out with an injury. I couldn’t tell much, but it seemed like he held his own.

8. A-back B.J. Bostic is out for about four weeks. Johnson wouldn’t specify the injury, but his right arm was in a sling. Johnson said redshirting him (he played last year as a true freshman) is a possibility.

9. Guard Errin Joe and Lyons both hobbled off the field with injuries, but Johnson said he didn’t think either injury was serious.

10. To me, no B-back stood out. I’ll have to add up the stats.

11. More fumbles, errant pitches and botched center-quarterback exchanges. Johnson did not sound concerned, attributing it to different combinations at the two positions.

12. Saturday was Johnson’s birthday. The team sang to him after the scrimmage.

IHATEUGA, if lowering standards means having players who have no better grasp of the English language than you do, then I am totally against it, not that I was for it anyway. Good grief, man, where did you learn English. It’s YOU’RE, not YOUR, and WE’RE not WERE. I’m sure you will say that none of that matters, but it does, and you’re showing that you’re no better than most of the mutts who post on here through your ignorance of proper grammar and correct spellling.

I really hope the D is better this year !!! If it is we ought to have a good year. One thing about this offense we are gonna score a lot and turn the ball over sometimes.

And FYI, Tech cannot add new majors or other fields of study without the approval of the Georgia Legislature, which, as you should know, is packed with THUGa grads or fans. They have prevented Tech from adding new schools many times in the past, and I’m sure they will now and again in the future as well.

I knew you would say that. It doesn’t matter whether I understood you or not; you’re just showing that you’re a dummy. Does that please you? Frankly, I have higher aspirations in life than for people to look at me in any context and consider me to be dumb. Of course, I know I opened up a big door there for mutts to call me dumb, but that’s a totally different context. Bad grammar and spelling make you look bad.

Vad Lee Tech’s answer to Lebron James hs2pro story, so use him as operative; Georgia’s new unis look like red and black spider man, video game-looking or something; wonder how Tech’s gonna look, if they’ll be watchable, b/c of late they have been otherwise, with the vegas gold pants, unstreamlined wide vegas gold side pants stripes, black socks/hose, thick black side pants stripesw/very little gold at upper thigh area on the all white unis, boring gold helmets, high top black basketball-style shoes w/white soles; I want alma mater to look watchable on tv/computer programs such as ramblinwreck.com

You continue making a fool out of yourself when you say the 2009 UGA game didn’t count. NCAA only punishes the offending team by making them vacte a victory, the losses still count. Go back and look at Bamas record from 2005-07. no wins in 05 or 06 but all the loses those years count.

If changing over to Nike or some other uniform supplier meant having uniforms like those new ones the mutts will be wearing, then I will GLADLY stay with Russell. Those new mutt uni’s are uglier than the all orange ones Clemson sometimes wears. Actually they make the models I saw look like human fire hydrants. Of course, I guess that’s appropriate for the mutts. The players had better stay away from UGA though, or they might get peed on.

Jasongt, unfortunately, you are incorrect on not counting the 2009 game. The NCAA report only vacated the wins, not the losses. So the ACC championship game is (at least for now) vacated, but the results of the THUGa game and the Iowa game stand. Wish it were different, but it’s not.

Georgia Tech does not have a school of food science like they do at UGA. Athletes in Athens can enroll in that school and eat their way through school. And then there is the prestigious school of poultry science. At Tech every student must take two semesters of Calculus. It’s an educational school, where as in Athens, many students major in underage drinking and D.U.I.

Tevin looked really smooth today. That 36 yard touchdown was great. He also completed an interior screen under a heavy blitz, showing a lot of composure. The screen was to Jones and it hit him right between the numbers.
Cross had another great scrimmage. He’s an excellent DE and is going to make a lot of noise on defense.
Johnson made a really good interception utilizing his fantastic speed and incredible ability to break toward the ball.
Sweeting was solid in coverage today. He broke up a well-thrown, sure-thing pass in the end zone.
Sims is going to really surprise people. On his eighth or ninth carry in a game he’s going to go for big yards.
Greene made some incredible catches today.
One pass was thrown to Hill. He caught it and gained about 15 to 20 yards after the catch.
Uzzi and Jackson are two really good guards. Jackson didn’t play today. Braun, true freshman, played in his place. Braun is going to be an incredible lineman. I would rather we red-shirted him, but some guys you can’t keep off the field.
Two other freshman lineman that look really good are Joe and Chamberlain.
Sylvester has had two good scrimmages. After a solid 09 season, he seemed to struggle with the new defense last year. He looks fully adjusted to it now.
Walls is looking good at NT.
We’ve got a lot of work to do. The improvement made from the scrimmage last week to the one today was a quantum leap forward.

GT9, thanks good stuff, what if Braun has to play, think he can handle it now.

More I’m hearing it seems like Washington going to be the QB. He did ok last year, but really had a hard time during close games late. that’s the only thing that scares me about him. His 1st game at Va Tech he had nice late drive till the int, UGA game the last two drives were real bad

Old W&G……..Synjyn played well. He’s a good scrambler/runner when the pocket breaks down or it’s a QB draw. Throws it okay too.

TW’s the best all-around at this point but I wouldn’t be shocked if SD or VL were to move ahead of him at some point. But I also won’t be shocked if TW continues to improve, and stays #1.

Braun can back up Jackson and Uzzi now. He’s a strong kid but if he had a red-shirt year he could get up to 310 or 315.

Answer: Yes. I am and all GT fans should be. In fact,we should be worried about the possibility of losing any and every game on this weak schedule. I hope I am wrong but a 6-6 season may be reality given all the question marks about this team.

What kind of offense does Western Carolina run, GD? What kind of defense do they run? I already know.
I’m just asking because I’m wondering what you’re basing your statement on.
Western Carolina has thirteen players from the state of Georgia on their roster. They are going to be very motivated. They are going to be disappointed.

Supersize, If you look at the whole tech uga series , tech still way behind, hasn’t been much of a series since the late 50’s, Dodd was 3-7 his last 10 vs. UGA. The 50’s the only decade where tech dominated a decade the way UGA has Tech (7-3).Georgia had more wins in the 40’s, 30’s, tech had an edge in the 20’s (3-2), and prior to 1910 tech was (5-1-1), form1910 to 1920 tech was 2-4 1-.tech was 1-5-3 in the 30’s ,4-6 in the 40’s.
