Johnson deems Tech practice ’suspect’

Greetings-

This is the same content as the notebook that should be posting soon, but just wanted to give you a chance to comment on how much on it or, you know, what little regard you hold for Georgia or Georgia Tech.

Is Vad Lee mentioned? You know he is.

Fire away…

1. After a strong start to the preseason, Georgia Tech is wobbling a little in the camp grind. Coach Paul Johnson termed Tuesday’s practice “suspect” and “not very good” a day after calling one of the Monday practices “sluggish.”

Johnson found fault with the team’s intensity Tuesday. At the end of the two-hour practice, he said “the offense kicked the fool out of the defense” in third-down drills. Last Wednesday, it was the opposite. To Johnson, it didn’t reflect one unit’s superiority, but a lack of mental toughness from one side.

“We started out good,” Johnson said. “We’ve got to get back to that point. It’s the middle of camp and everyone’s a little tired and they’ve got to learn to push.”

Over the offseason, Tech players spoke often about the team having greater accountability, unity and drive than the 2010 team that started out the season ranked  No. 16 but finished 6-7, Tech’s first losing season since 1996.

Said Johnson of the team’s intensity and focus, “If it doesn’t get better, it’ll be a big concern.”

Johnson did say a few players caught his attention, naming wide receiver Stephen Hill, B-back Charles Perkins and A-back Tony Zenon.

B-back David Sims has been having a strong camp, Johnson said, and  ”Charles decided to come along for the ride. We know it’s in there. Today, I saw it a little bit.”

The Yellow Jackets will have their final two-a-day practice Wednesday. Camp will break Saturday following the second scrimmage.

2. Four walk-ons, including starting right tackle Tyler Kidney, were put on scholarship Monday. The other three were A-back Robert Godhigh and linebackers Robert Hogan and Matt Serpico. Kidney, Godhigh and Hogan joined the team in 2009. Serpico is a freshman.

Tech had four available under the 85-player limit. Johnson said the four have the understanding that the grants may not be extended beyond this academic year. Teammates applauded when told the news after Tuesday’s practice.

“Georgia Tech has done a great job with me and other walk-ons with treating us with respect, as much as you would hope to get coming in as a non-scholarship player, but it just feels great,” said Kidney, from Northview High.

3. Quarterbacks Tevin Washington and Synjyn Days have been splitting repetitions with the first team while freshman Vad Lee has been getting all of the reps with the second team. Johnson said it doesn’t necessarily mean Lee is getting more snaps than the other two, but acknowledged he probably is.

Johnson has split the practice time that way to evaluate Washington and Days against each other for the starting job.

“Vad’s not in that picture right now,” Johnson said.

Johnson was asked his timetable for making a decision on whether or not to redshirt Lee.

Said Johnson, “December.”

4. Offensive tackle Phil Smith said the reason for his two-game suspension was not due to a legal matter, but declined to specify. “Not in any trouble, just with the coaches,” he said. Johnson said last week Smith will sit out the first two games of the season for breaking team rules. … True freshman wide receiver Jeff Greene has continued to impress. With wide receivers such as Hill and Tyler Melton having missed practices, Greene has been working with the first string. … The B-back competition between Preston Lyons, Perkins and Sims has tightened. While Lyons entered camp as the starter, Johnson called them “interchangeable.” … Melton (strained calf) and B-back Richard Watson (concussion) were among players held out of practice Tuesday.

it’s also good to see in print that Phil Smith did in fact just break some team rules. Many naysayers have been spewing liable and slander about him.

Hate to say it, but looks like Vad is going to see the field this year. Would have loved for him to be redshirted but oh well.

When you are stuck with less talent than Stephenson High School what else can he expect? This ship is sinking at a rapid rate. We are not even a serious contender in the worst BCS conference. Hideous.

I would love to see Greene make a run for a starting job. We can’t rely on the “suspect” receiving corps from last year. Hopefully Hill & Co. have become better at catching the ball. Johnson has been raving about the Freshmen WRs. Hopefully they will be a good bunch over the next few years. Once Vad Lee assumes a starting role (after Tevin leaves) and if Greene turns out to be a go-to guy, watch out for an unstoppable, dual-threat offense. I can’t wait to see what the future holds. I hope the defense will turn their heads up and start playing with intensity.

Thanks for your input, Samuel. I think you meant to click on the Junkyard Blog (Blawg?).

This is nothing to be concerned with. It’s August, it’s hot, and they’ve been practicing against the same people for two weeks.

If the tools from N. Ave. win more than 5 games this year it will be a miracle. That includes the 4 high school teams they annually schedule as well.

Dear Radakovich. Long time fan and alumni and ticket holder. Word of advice. Vad needs to see the field this year. If anything, it will pump some excitement into the fan base. Otherwise, it will be the same ol’ 3 yards and a cloud of dust.

GT is losing momentum in its fan base support.

Have you watched the games, GT Fan? Johnson’s offense is anything but three yards and a cloud of dust.

If you don’t want to go to the the games, don’t. No one’s gonna miss you.

Congratulations Godhigh, you are now the NINTH A-back on scholly, all under-sized, and the way that “Coach It-is-what-it-is” has fallen in love with under-sized A-backs is what is causing GT to have depth issues at other positions, mainly OL and Safety.

A friend’s daughter is beginning her full ride on scholarship at tech this year despite being longtime UGA fans. His daughter will be a member of whatever the tech band is called and that was one of several factors that made her decide on tech. She knew she could be a member of the tech whatevers but was not so sure she could make it into the Redcoat Marching Band.

Anyway my friend received a letter from tech about purchasing season tickets. He called and was told it was $200 or so for the season and he asked what the minimum donation was. The dumfounded techie answered “Huh. What you mean donation? Mister if you send us $200 you can go to every home game.” My friend is now deciding which UGA games to miss so he can watch his daughter be the best UGA fan in the tech whatever band.

Nice to see 4 walk ons be put on scholarship. Even of it is for only 1 year, it has to be a great financial boost to the players and their families.

As I stated before on your blog, you are too talented to be stuck with this lowly assignment. The tech beat has d o ledbetter written all over it. No one would notice what a hack he is or care that he is often scooped and rarely is correct or even writes about the team he is suppossedly covering.

You could take over the Falcons blog and us Falcons fans could finally get decent coverage of Atlanta;s best team. Also I doubt you would stoop to highly embarassing name calling with players wifes designed to make yourself part of the story.

for a fanbase who LOVES to give UGA hell for having high hopes for incoming freshmen, you nerds sure are bowing down to Vad Lee.

Vad Lee: 3 star QB who you think has the biggest arm since Drew Brees, and was only seriously recruited by UNC…. you know, one of the other ACC Schools on (or about to be) on serious probation.

Yeah.

Its funny how after reading all of the comments on here nobody said anything about tech having two consecutive lack luster practices. I guess its more important that phil smith didnt fail a drug test, or a few walk ons received scholarships then the fact that a 6-7 season isnt motivation enough to get after it in camp. Hey if you like it I love it see you in november!

Drew Brees doesn’t have a huge arm, final score.

Vad was a four star recruit depending on the service. But I agree with you, it seems awfully silly to have all these expectations placed on an 18 year old.

If we want to count RECOGNIZED national championships (meaning championships picked by selectors recognized by the NCAA), Tech has three (1917, 1928, and 1990) and UGA has one (1980).

If we want to count any year that ANY selector chose either team as their national champion, Tech has 6 (1917, 1928, 1951, 1952, 1956, 1990) and Georgia has 5 (1927, 1942, 1946, 1968, 1980).

If we want to count BCS National Championships, both Tech and Georgia have 0.

If we want to count undefeated seasons (including ties), Tech has 8 (1905, 1915, 1916, 1917, 1928, 1951, 1952, 1990) and Georgia has 4 (1896, 1920, 1946, 1980).

If we want to count undefeated AND untied seasons, Tech has 3 (1917, 1928, 1952) and Georgia has 3 (1896, 1946, 1980).

Tech comes out on top of every list except undefeated and untied seasons, although it should be noted that in 1896 Georgia only played 4 games.

When Tech and Georgia were both in the SIAA conference (1895-1920), Tech had 5 titles (1916, 1917, 1918, 1920, 1921) and UGA had 2 (1896, 1920). Tech and UGA shared the title in 1920 apparently.

When Tech and Georgia were both in the Southern Conference (1921-1932), Tech had 3 titles (1922, 1927, 1928) and UGA had 0.

When Tech and Georgia were both in the SEC (1933-1963), Tech had 5 titles (1939, 1943, 1944, 1951,1952) and UGA had 4 (1942, 1946, 1948, 1959).

So in summary, Tech leads UGA in every one of these historical measures, save for one: UGA leads the all-time head-to-head series.

But since UGA fans don’t care about Tech anyway, this is really nothing to brag about.

I guess we now see why so many UGA fans come onto our blogs so often.

Jealousy is a very ugly thing.

Do you honestly think cpj went into the meeting room and said “hey guys I know its hot outside so lets have a better practice tomorrow”? No, I don’t think Johnson said that. But I’m not the head coach, which means I get to be a little more reasonable. They’re a bunch of 19 or 20 year olds and they’ve been doing the same monotonous stuff for the past two weeks in brutal heat. I’m not shocked that they lose focus from time to time.

RambleOn,

Actually, if you want to talk only championships a team won unanimously without leaching onto other teams titles, then UGA and Tech each only have one. UGA’s was won during all of our lifetimes, while Tech’s was won while the Civil War was still fresh on everyone’s mind.

Gotcha again, chump!! ;)
