Jefferson productive in Buffalo preseason game

Tech’s NFL rookie aspirants got their first preseason game action over the weekend. If assigning winners among players playing different positions, getting varying amount of playing time against different opponents is something you’re interested in, let’s declare Buffalo linebacker Brad Jefferson the winner for his three tackles and sack against Chicago on Saturday.

- Mario Butler got snaps at safety for the Dallas Cowboys against Denver Thursday, a 24-23 Cowboys win. Butler made one tackle, in the third quarter, for Dallas.

- Running back Anthony Allen had one carry for three yards and a pair of catches for 14 yards for Baltimore against Philadelphia in the Eagles’ 13-6 win Thursday. Both passes were from former Virginia Tech star Tyrod Taylor.

- In the Falcons’ 28-23 loss to Miami Friday at the Georgia Dome, fullback Lucas Cox and wide receiver Kevin Cone both played for the Falcons. Cone was targeted with two passes late in the fourth quarter. He caught one of them for 14 yards. I’m told coaches like the play of Cox thus far and is a strong candidate for the practice squad.

- Playing Wildcat, Buffalo Bills quarterback Joshua Nesbitt led the team in rushing with three carries for 30 yards, with a long run of 21 yards. It appeared he got in for one series, late in the third quarter, of the Bills’ 10-3 loss to Chicago Saturday.

As noted, Jefferson was productive, making three solo tackles, tied for second most on the team, with a sack of Nathan Enderle in the fourth quarter. He also was credited with a quarterback hurry.

- In the New York Giants’ 20-10 loss to Carolina Saturday, safety Jerrard Tarrant had two tackles, one of them solo, as well as one special teams tackle. Tarrant got into the game in the second quarter, a good sign for him.

here’s a fans comment from the Buffalo NY newspaper:

“OK, I watched the game. Great defensive outing. However, I see there’s a quarterback named Nesbitt, who conjures up images of Michael Vick and Cam Newton. He was doing good late in the game. However, on 4th and less than 1, with the possibility of the Bills still having a chance late in the game, the Bills opted to punt rather than let #7 just call a fast snap, jump over for a 1st down, and keep their chances going.

Decision-making: Not a good Buffalo Bills trait.”

From these capsule reviews, Jefferson is the stand out. I said it before, and I’ll say it again: in the situation he is in, he may have the best chance of any of this years GT picks to make an active roster and be productive.

As for Buffalo: We all know that Coach Gailey always has and probably always will “play the percentages” and take the safe play. No matter what talent he has to play with. Can anybody name a time when you saw him take a gamble????

Did J. Dwyer do anything in the GB game? I looked up at a TV in a bar and it looked like he had been playing but I checked the box score later and didn’t see him with any yards.

jack ey – Don’t forget who called for the punt for Buffalo on 4th and 1 in a meaningless preseason game. The same guy who called for a punt with 2ins to go in the ACCCG with GT losing to WF

Hey Buzzzed, Dwyer is with Pittsburgh and had 5 carries for 7 yards and a catch for 6 yds. against Washington.

I kept looking for Tarrant but I was too excited to see Carolina actually score a TD in a preseason game, never did see Tarrant. All you bird fans better get ready for some Cam action this fall.

Good luck to all of them. And I give credit to Gailey for originally recruiting Nesbitt and others, even though I concur that he isn’t the best tactician in the game. It will make Sundays more interesting to have a few more Jackets to follow.

CPJ would have gone for it and gotten it with Nesbitt.
